[Putting her back into u/c while I edit as is my habit (I hope that's okay), but crit is okay and stuff.]

YOUNG GIRL

Name: Reine Orne
Color: This shade. (#babfb7)
Age: 13
Nationality: French / ??
Home/Financial Status: Middle class / stable
School: Teufel Town Middle School

Personality: The two things most important to Reine's life are her family and her pottery. It's not to say that she ignores other things, however; while she tends to withdraw from elements of her life she actively dislikes, Reine will perk up when engaged with. Though school has steadily gotten more unpleasant as she's gotten older (with a corresponding drop in her grades), for example, she still performs well when placed with an energetic and intense teacher, and her luck in getting the right sort of teacher can be measured with some accuracy by the number of sketches in her notebooks. For the most part, Reine thinks of school as something relatively tedious to occupy her time during the day between physical therapy (also tedious but unfortunately necessary) and pottery class (the best part of her week). She loves the feel of clay shaping around her hands and fingers— there's something organic and peaceful about the feeling that she feels cut off from in everyday life. It's similar to what she feels when she plays with her little sister. Any twitch she makes when she's working on the wheel could destroy her vision for the final piece, just as any misstep she makes with her sister could have traumatizing effects. It's not the power of it that excites her, per se; it's that knowing she can destroy something makes her treasure it more. She longs to be responsible for herself.

Appearance: Reine has grey eyes and wavy blue hair to her mid-back, with her bangs clipped back by a cloud-shaped hairpin. Rough reference here; obviously not for bodytype. She’s slightly tall for her age and due to her interest in pottery, her muscles are particularly defined in her arms and shoulders. Reine was born with cerebral palsy, which affects the muscle tone in her legs and results in them looking somewhat contorted. She normally carries a cane for support, but she is able to bear her own weight-- the cane just makes it easier for her. Like any young teenager, she is terribly conscious of what makes her different and dresses to show that she is capable of elegance and neatness despite the disorder of her lower limbs. Reine does not want to look careless. She favors clothes with a shape and elegance to them with patterns that are just short of being too loud to be classic. Except when she’s doing pottery, of course. But she always carries her good clothes in her bag because Reine Orne is neat and tidy and never careless.

History:
0 years - Reine Orne is born. She is born premature, but despite complications is a healthy baby.
10 months - Reine’s mother Helena dies from chronic heart disease.
10 months - Helena’s brother Thaddeus offers to help Rémi with Reine, and starts to help support the family.
18 months - Hannah Monk, an old flame of Rémi’s, reconnects with him. She takes an immediate interest in Reine.
2 years - Reine is diagnosed with cerebral palsy (spastic diplegia).
3 years - Rémi and Hannah marry.
4 years - Reine starts school and really loves being active and learning new skills.
5 years - Reine’s sister, Delia Orne, is born.
6 years - Thaddeus marries and begins to focus on his own family, though he’s still very close to the Ornes.
8 years - School starts losing its joy for Reine, slowly at first, but the parts she dislikes increase every year.
9 years - After especially enjoying an art class focused on clay sculpture, Reine starts pottery class.
10 years - Reine is teased by a classmate because of the way she walks. The student is reprimanded.
11 years - Reine starts middle school, and the teasing becomes a common occurrence, for no reason she can figure out. Between this and the increased emphasis on achievement rather than improvement, school becomes unpleasant for her.
13 years - Reine’s grades have steadily declined, and she has withdrawn from the school’s social environment.

Family:

Father: Rémi Orne ; Paralegal
Birth mother (deceased): Helena Orne ;
• Died of chronic heart disease before Reine’s first birthday. Reine doesn’t remember her at all, although her father will sometimes talk about his first wife.
Stepmother: Hannah Orne; School guidance counselor
• When Rémi lost his wife, he determined to remarry as soon as possible so his daughter would have a mother. Hannah had dated Rémi in college, and when she found that he was not only dating again but had a one-year-old daughter, she fit herself back into his life. Hannah adores Reine, and Reine calls her mother.
Younger sister: Delia Orne; 8 years old
• Technically a half-sister, Delia is the child of Hannah and Rémi. Reine loves all of her family, but her little sister holds a special place in her heart. Delia and Reine spend hours playing together, drawing murals on large rolls of paper and such.
Maternal uncle: Thaddeus Padmore ;
• After Helena’s death, her brother Tad offered to help take care of Reine. He has remained a fixture in her life, and even Delia has learned to call Tad uncle. He now has children of his own, so he’s not around nearly as much as he used to be, but he will always make time for his niece.

PUELLA MAGI

Language: French

Desires: Control. ??

Emblem: Cloud

Weapon: Claymore

Type of Magic: The Animating Principle-- Reine is able to animate objects in a small area around her. She can choose which objects to animate, but has less control over the way that they move.

Outfit: Skirt, nothing too poofy, otherwise artist's choice.

(Note: I don't have CP myself, so please let me know (PM or otherwise) if you have any problems. I don't want to make anyone upset or uncomfortable.)

Hey Pyry! <3 Here's a crit for Reine!

I like that Reine is a very careful person, and I'd like to see more of how that influences her interactions with people. Is she hesitant to make friends because of her condition, or is she really careful not to make waves/upset people that she knows because she doesn't want to knock that friendship out of order? I'd love to hear more about how she feels about her illness and how it sets her apart-- does she feel like an outsider or has she been able to get by with the people who see her for who she is? How is her attitude about the world-- is she jaded that she hardly had much life before the illness got to her, is she hopeful that maybe there'll be a cure, or has she learned to accept it? What bothers her most about people? What makes her really angry or upset? I think that there's a lot to be expanded on in her personality section, and I'm curious to find out more about her. :)

I'd also like to know more about how Reine sees herself. Does she have a healthy self-image, or does she think that she's a freak? Does she envy others, or does she flaunt her illness and force other people to acknowledge it? She's withdrawn from the social environment of the school, but is she more a quiet hermit, or is she a rebellious outcast? What kind of friends does she have, or is she heavily dependent on her family for support? These are just a few questions to get you thinking about her history/how she currently functions at school.

I love that she does pottery! As her motivating passion, maybe it could tie more into her puella form? :3 This is just a suggestion, but how about earth-magic for a power? :D Pottery/ceramics is pretty much taking clay and molding it, so maybe Reine could shape pieces of earth to do her bidding-- like raise slabs to help her jump and attack enemies, summon stones or make things out of rocks to help attack, or rocks to block attacks for her? Two puellae (Flora and Sophie) already have similar animation powers, so it might be cool to do something different; if not, then maybe make sure that it ties in more with Reine's wish, maybe for more friends or something. :) It's all up to you.

As far as her wish goes-- would she want to be cured of her illness? Or is there something else that she wants that gets her the cure as a benefit of being a puella? Control of herself might be a boon to her, esp. with being more connected with people, but I think it might be good to flesh out more of who Reine is as a person before settling on a wish. Usually a personality can help motivate a wish. :D

I'm also curious about how the cloud emblem ties into her personality/wish!

Good luck with Reine, and I hope my crits help! <3

I'm kind of obsessive about tiny details, so the first thing is clarifying cerebral palsy a little. It's a kind of brain damage, so there isn't really an illness. And because it's brain damage, it's not really something that can have a cure, exactly. There are, of course, always innovations in treating brain damage, and the brain is very talented at finding new ways of doing things, and I'm going to link to wiki just so I'll shut up about things that aren't Reine. Um, don't mind me. You don't need to read it or anything. I'm just silly. x

Yes, I do think she would wish away her disability. It's something that I think would sound really appealing to her, but since having CP affects all aspects of her life (disability is never all of a person, but it always shapes them) the consequences of making such a wish would put a lot of strain on Reine's life and relationships.

She does have a strain of rebelliousness, yes. Her refusal to participate in things she hates— which largely involves school but whoops I need to mention other activities— is rather sulky and passive-aggressive. I think she'd prefer to just not discuss her disability, really, but is also hyper-aware that it sets her apart from others and will use that to alienate people when she wants to.

Thank you for the advice on her magic! I'm really bad at thinking through magic, and you've given me some ideas for something that might fit her concept well. Pottery taps into her drive to create, and um. Anyway, thank you again! Crit helps me find the right words, sometimes.
