YOUNG GIRL Name: Pepita Noelle Blu Color: #7CCD7C - Lime Ice Age: 14 Nationality: Kiwi American (Half American, Half New Zealander) Home/Financial Status: Daisy District / Lower Middle Class School: Teufel Town High School
Personality: Anyone who does not know Pepita could assume that she was quiet. She carries herself in a manner that tells she does not like to talk or be talked to by strangers. She is a bit socially awkward and withdraws herself and her ideas from others. It is not that she does not want to talk to them or give her ideas; she just does not want to be judged by others and feel stupid for her opinions. Conversations with her are rather short as she is not sure what to say back to the other person to keep the conversations going. However, if they start flowing easily and it is not awkward, she will loosen up and be more willing to try to talk and open herself up.
On the opposite spectrum of things, Pepita is very open, cheerful around her friends, and family. They make her feel normal; allow her to be who she truly is and not hide anything. On the outside, everyone can see that she is usually cheerful and full of laughter. She loves a good joke and can throw some out like the best of them. On the inside, Pepita feels lonely many times. As if people do not completely understand her and she does not want to be alone. However, she will not voice this and just tries to hide it and push it off as if she is just being emotional. She feels abnormal because her eyesight is gone and deteriorating. Mainly it is that she feels everyone’s eyes are on her and staring at her for having a small abnormality. Especially because one of her brothers has made fun of her at one point for how her left eye was looking in a different direction then her other. This was when she found out she couldn’t control where her eye was looking.
Emotions, those are some strong things for her. Pepita is very in tune with her emotions and can sometimes be said as overemotional. She is at either one extreme or the other. Melancholy moments take a real toll on her and pull at her heartstrings. She cries easily and can understand the pain and problems that others are going through. Pepita wants to help ever so much. She respects her friends for who they are and what they are. She was brought up with an open mind and refuses to judge others on certain life choices. However, she does tend to be brutally honest when given the chance. Although it would be smart for her to take into account how what she is going to say will affect someone, she does not think about it. Sometimes her mouth works faster than her mind and she spits things out she should not have said. Her friends might not forgive her so fast, but Pepita usually forgives herself the next day. She also forgives people for what they did within 24 hours. There is no reason to hold grudges.
When it comes to stress it is almost paralyzing to Pepita. At first it overwhelms her and she breaks down, not sure what to do. Finally, after she has had time to push it out of her system, she will go consult her mother. Her mother is wise and usually has great information and influence on Pepita's decision. This method becomes harder if the stress is related to her family. She can still ask her mother about problems relating to her brothers and sometimes her father but obviously not when it comes to her mom. If there is a stressful problem or situation that accors and obtains to her mother, Pepita usually avoids her for a while and tries to figure things out on her own. She might ask her brother Jayden for some advice but usually she ends up confronting her mother. That can either be helpful or make the situations even worse. No matter what the stressful situation, they always begin with overwhelming her and lots of tears.
Although there are tons of things she wants from life, she is a bit of a lazy person and a procrastinator. If it can wait to be done another day, then she will probably push it off until then. She would rather relax and enjoy the time she has with her friends and family. Anything she does isn't done to her full extent because that would take actual work and who feels like doing that? Instead, she does what she is suppose to and does an average job at it. Nothing spectacular but at least it was done. If she is not relaxing, she spends her time scribbling ideas of clothing. She is not the artistic type of person, but she loves fashion and the feel of different fabrics. Cloth is one of her favorite things since each one can feel completely different from the others no matter how similar the material put into it is.
Since birth Pepita has been a rather girly girl, which helps explain the interest in dresses and fashion. Since fabrics and different dress types are some of her favorite things, she could spend hours just learning about each one, especially how to make them. One of her aspirations is to learn to sew and create beautiful clothing that people would come from around the world to try on and buy. However, she is pushing that off until tomorrow. Her New Zealand background is something Pepita is very proud of.
She believes that is has shaped a large part of her and that if she were able to, it would inspire her clothing creations. Sometimes she would paint designs on her face to be just like the Maori Warriors and feel brave and strong. It was almost like an alter ego and an escape from reality.
One thing that Pepita cannot stand is bugs, especially spiders. Have you ever seen one? She would tell you they are eight legged monsters that try to bite you to suck off your face. At least, that is how she remembers them. Everyone has their own nightmare and spiders just happen to be hers. If one were to appear she would probably begin by hyperventilating, crying and point at it. As the bug monster from space came closer, she would scream, jump around on a higher surface and cry some more; there is no way the spider would ever get close enough to touch her because she would fly out of the room screaming her head off until someone got rid of it. Nevertheless, she refuses to let you kill them in front of her. It has to be taken back outside because each insect has a life and family as well. Everyone knows that.
Appearance: A small framed girl with a natural tan skin tone from her ancestors. She is built with a very thin body with almost no fat on her bones; however, she has a nice covering of muscles that cling to her bony frame. She has light blonde hair, from her fathers side of course, that is naturally curly. It is wrapped up and put in a messy spiral bun type thing on the right side of her head. With how messy the up-do is, some of her hair has managed to free itself and hangs down on both sides. She has side swept bangs that go to the left and end up piecy and almost pulled into her up-do. Her eyes are light and lifeless looking almost since she is completely blind in her left eye and partial blind in her right. Although she is not completely blind yet, she can no longer see bright vibrant colors and cannot see in the dark. She usually carries a cane or stick with her so she can feel where she is going. Normally she wears a small girly dress and flats. They are the most comfortable and her mother usually picks things out for her. She enjoys feeling girly and being cute although she cannot see herself. Pepita walk with her appendages close to her body and with her head down.
History: Pepita is the youngest of three children and the only girl. Her mother was originally from New Zealand with her ancestors coming from the Maori Warriors. Her father is from America and met his wife not long after he turned 22. They fell in love almost instantly and after 3 years of date, were to be wed. They had their first two children within 2 years. Although they loved the boys, Ahu wanted a daughter, so they tried a third time. Four years later, her prayers were answer; this time it was a girl. She was named after her great grandmother on her father's side; Pepita Noelle. She was a normal child and grew up as most would with two older brothers. She was picked on and messed with but it was not anything she could not handle. Her mother brought back some of her New Zealand traditions when she moved to America. Her children were taught them but they were not forced to believe in her views. Pepita picked up on them quickly and was fascinated with her mother's heritage.
At about the age of 5 when she was in Kindergarten, she started to feel rather ill. First, it was a headache but it kept getting worse. The vision in her left eyes started to blur and her father took her to the emergency room since there was no time to wait on a doctor's visit. While there, Pepita saw several doctors, one right after the other. Her diagnosis and turned from "eye problem" to "ocular inflammation" and finally to "uveitis". For some reason her white blood cells had started to attack her eyes. They had infiltrated most of the major structures of the eye. Within an hour, they had destroyed the retinal vessels and Pepita was blind in her left eye. Her right eye had started something similar but with some injections and medication, the process was stopped within enough time to save some of her sight. The young girl can no longer see color or in the dark. Her vision is limited and at best can be described as a bad cause of blurry vision.
Going from perfectly normal to 'this' was hard for her. Luckily, it had happened at a young enough age she was able to jump back into being a young girl and trying to live life. Pepita really wanted a Seeing Eye dog but her family could not afford it, instead her parents bought her a walking cane.
Returning to Elementary school was hard for her. Since the incident her parent’s had kept her out of school for a year just so Pepita could become more accustomed to how she worked now. She was home schooled and did very well in math. It was not her favorite subject, but she rocked at it. Going back to school for Second Grade was a bit nerve wracking. She was not sure what to expect from the teachers or students. Most remembered her, but some of the stared at her since her eye color was foggier and her left eye did not move with her right one. She had to sit at the front of the classes, instead of the back with her old friends, and felt like everyone was staring at her. Her own insecurities were playing a major part in her paranoia.
Math and Science were always easy. Everything just made sense. Most the times the rules stood firmly and there were a lot of information to back these up. They were her strong spots academically. However, English was a whole other boat. There were so many rules and each of those rules had exceptions. One simple comma had about twelve or so rules just for it. Each of these was difficult to understand and remember. Writing papers was difficult as well. Her ideas never came out easily and she had a hard time making a point. Her papers become ramblings of her ideas as they moved around. NOthing solid and readable. Since her love of fashion, Pepita has been wanting to become a fashion designer. However, this seems rather difficult and like it would actually be hard work, so instead, Pepita thinks she might just go into something business like. That would probably suit her math, science, and history knowledge. Or maybe she could become a history teacher. Honestly there were too many ideas out there and she wasn't particularly ready to pick what she wanted to spend her whole life doing it.
Her brothers were protective of her because she was their younger sister. What happened to her when she was younger had no affect on the way they treated her. The picking and messing with continued and their relationships became stronger. They always joked with their father about if she ever came home with a boyfriend they would all three have guns waiting to greet him. Just so the boy would understand what he was getting himself into. They were serious. Her relationships with her brothers remained close all throughout elementary and middle school. It was almost as if they were the same person, just split up into three different bodies so they could interact with each other. Mainly they played video games together and every so often let Pepita win because she was, as they would say, a girl and not good at the first person shooters they played.
Leaving middle school and heading towards high school was a scary experience. The children were known to be a bit more vicious and with her paranoia, it would be a wild ride in her mind. Her teachers had always told them high school was much different then middle and harder. This did not help how she was feeling. Pepita was placed in honor classes since she was doing extremely well in school but she turned them down so she would not have to work as hard. Her first day was not as bad as she thought, but she became known as the “Blind Girl” and the friends she had in middle school changed to fit in at this new environment. She felt slightly alone but told herself that she just had to make through these four years and she would be fine.

PUELLA MAGI Language: Maori
Desires: To be normal. To have the visibility that others do. To be able to see the world around her. To have a good use for her eyes. More than anything Pepita does not want to be treated like a crippled puppy for something that she knows how to deal with. She doesn't want to be stared out for being different. She wants to belong. She wants her eyes to have a good use for her, not just be something that holds her back and distorts her world around her. She wishes to know what colors truly are and what others mean by how beautiful the sunset is. She wants to witness those moments that you can only understand and feel by seeing. Pepita does not want to miss out anymore. She wants to live.
Emblem: The Koru - The spiral shaped koru is a very popular Maori tribal symbol. The Koru, shaped in the form of an unfurling spiral represents the unfolding silver fern frond. It symbolizes new beginnings in life. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to 'going back to the beginning'. The unfurling frond itself is symbolic for new life, hope, perfection, rebirth, a new start, awakening, personal growth, hope, purity, nurturing, a new phase (in life), the spirit of rejuvenation, and peace.
Weapon: Mere
Type of Magic: I'm still playing with these ideas, so any crits and suggestions on this would be helpful.
Pepita mainly uses her eyes during her fights. Her magic is mostly defensive and isn't use to physically attack what she is fighting. She is able to create a blinding light that beams from her eyes. This light covers the area and prevents anyone within in the immediate vicinity from being able to see. Everything looks white. While using her white light blinding technique, she would see red X's located on things around her that were not inanimate objects. Be this friend or foe. Since she has grown up without sight she has become accustomed to using sound and smell more; these senses would help her tell which of the X's were friends and which were foes. If Pepita is in darkness, her scent and hearing gain a boost and become higher senses. She can also use her eyes to show other Puella who she is close to her current location or be able to see through their eyes. Seeing through someone else's eyes would be much harder then letting other see through her own. They could only see what she was looking at and what her eyes were focusing on. This would allow others to come to her aid if needed.
Outfit: Something based from her homeland New Zealand and the Maori Warriors.

I haven't read your girl's stuff in detail yet, but I wanted to ask if you could make her font color a little darker. Against the white background it is SUPER hard to read without highlighting over it. D:

I figured they would be too light but I liked the colors. XD

No, your eyes were right. It wasn't the same exact color, but it was a similar one to the lemon ice thing. I changed them all now. Let me know if that is better.

Personality: You seem to mostly just focus on Pepita's shyness and obligingness here, where I'd like to know more about the other aspects of her personality. What does she like and dislike? How does she treat others at her worst? What does she enjoy doing for fun and what classes does she do well in at school? Is she outdoorsy or indoorsy? What kinds of ideas does she have that she's afraid to share? Is she creative? How so? You say she doesn't feel normal, what qualities make her feel abnormal? Just her lack of eyesight? It might help to list out some personality traits and then rewrite them into paragraphs just so you can see what bases you're covering before you do it.
History: With a disability, I would just suggest to double and triple check your facts and make sure you feel comfortable playing a disabled character before you do it. It can be challenging to portray, especially if you don't have personal experience with that disability. What I want to know is how her classmates reacted to the change, since she seems to be really shy and skittish around people. Did they react badly, or did her own insecurities build up through paranoia? You sort of allude to how people have treated her in her desires as a Puella Magica below. Could you elaborate in the history?
Magic: 3 miles is a pretty big radius to blind people for a Puella Magi. i'd suggest a smaller radius like in the immediate vicinity? I'd also think this is a typo: "Since she has grown up without sight she has become accustomed to using sight and smell more"
The seeing through her eyes is interesting also since it alludes to her wanting to be understood and treated equally.
One thing I would like to know is why did you choose a croix? What's the symbolism there, if any?
Pepita's an interesting character, but I'd just suggest focusing on her beyond her disability when it comes to her personality. You really latch onto that all throughout this quest without giving us much else to go on, which is a bit ironic since Pepita seems to want to be seen for who she is beyond that in the first place. It's a neat concept though, and she seemes like a really cute girl. I think it could be really formidable with just a little more fleshing out! <3

Ah, thank you Kotaline. I shall go in a flesh out some stuff. I have always been terrible at typing up personalities and histories, so I shall try again. Lol.
And I wasn't sure about the 3 mile thing. Again, thank you for your crit. : )

Alright. I tried to fix her personality and history. I plan to reread over them again and see if they still only focus on her disability or not. Also, to make sure it all sounds right.
I fixed the mistake about the sound, changed it from 3 miles to the immediate vicinity.
Also changed her symbol to something that fits her more. I believe at least.

Hey there! :D I like the changes that you made to the personality and history-- I think that Pepita is starting to sound like a really solid character now!
I'm curious about a few more things, though. How does she handle stress? Is she very emotional at first and then does she calm down and handle things methodically, or is it all a blur? What if the stress is related to her family? What are her strengths and weaknesses academically-- does she know what (in general) she wants to do with her life, or is she still trying to figure stuff out? How much influence did her mother's New Zealand stories have on her childhood/how she sees herself? It seems like they factor into her personality quite a bit, as her puella design is based so much about them. Does she draw pride from her heritage, and how so?
I think her puella powers seem more bounded now, though I really liked what you did with scent and touch. Maybe consider giving her a power where, if Pepita's in darkness, her senses other than sight get a boost? I really liked her weapon and her symbol-- both seem to really fit her well.
Overall, nice work! :DD I'm really excited to see where this girl goes!
