After dropping out of Candidacy and returning to his Craft with only a few pointed comments from his father to reflect the change, Gauden had completed his Journeyma requirements and been reassigned to his supposedly permanent location: Trine Weyr. Gauden had never been sure if this was coincidence or someone's idea of a joke, but the matter remained that he had been sent back to the Weyr in the capacity of his Craft and was happy for it. It meant he wouldn't lose touch with those he had known from his Candidacy and he would be working with animals already familiar to him in a respectable Weyr community.
Well, maybe he thought all of this subconsciously, at least. Consciously, he accepted the assignment, packed with his usual quiet efficiency, and returned to the Weyr as if there had never been three months in between.
However, despite all of that, a Turn and a half had passed in full since his departure and return-- including four runner births and a second dragon Clutch-- before his casual routine was interrupted by the most unexpected and unwelcome change: revolution.
Gauden frowned as he heard screams and stepped out of the stables, looking for the signs of disturbance. Was it just a startled drudge? No, that had been a scream of fear and panic, not the unknown. Gauden looked about, and then noticed wherhandlers, more than one usually saw doing anything, especially during the day, leading their blindfolded companions toward the main buildings. Gauden leaned against the door frame, watching them for a moment, before disappearing back inside the stables. He set down the tools he'd been holding and turned to leave the stable: only to find the way blocked by a man.
Gauden didn't know him by name, but he recognized the man from passing him around the Weyr.
"Something I can help you with?" Gauden asked casually. The scream would have to wait. Hopefully, whatever had happened, someone had already gotten to the woman to help. By the time he got there it would likely already be taken care of, anyway.
The man in the doorway stepped inside, deceptively at ease in a way that made Gauden reassess the man's purpose here.
"I'm here to take charge of the stables. Master Oricai wanted you out by the second runner paddock."
"Is that so?" Gauden felt wrong about this. What was Oricai doing out with the runners at this time of day? "What seems to be the trouble?"
"Runner busted her leg. He needs a hand and said to get you."
Gauden stared at the man, who wandered over to a stall where the runner backed away from him. Not a good reaction.
The tension was thick in the air... and then shouting began in the distance. When their eyes met again, Gauden had a sick feeling this man knew exactly what it was. Although the murders had taken place nearly a Turn ago, it popped into Gauden's mind again. Had someone returned to finish the job they had started? However, Gauden kept his face impassive.
"Well, why don't you go back to Master Oricai and tell him Jorge stepped out and Mathia is about to drop her foal. He can handle a broken leg on his own."
An ugly look came over the man's face and Gauden set himself for a fight. "Or maybe that awful story you just told me can be set aside and you can tell me why you're really here."
When the man suddenly ran at him, Gauden got the distinct impression that the man no longer wanted to explain himself.

The man ran at Gauden and tossed a punch at him, aiming for the area of his head but not sure that it would connect, considering the distance he had to run.
The stupid Beastcrafter obviously didn't know about the revolution, and that most likely meant he wasn't on their side. No sense in taking chances. If he was, Alakin would apologize later. For now... it was time to get rid of him before he botched the job on which that Alakin was set.

The man swung wildly and barely missed Gauden's face, but the Beastcrafter was a few Turns younger than this man and quick on his feet. You had to be to avoid kicks and bites from angry beasts.
In return, Gauden tried a punch of his own, but aiming to knock the wind out of his assailant. ============

Alakin saw the fist and tried to move, succeeding in stumbling back out of the way in time to avoid getting hit. He ran in for a tackle. Maybe if he could get the man off of his feet...

Gauden saw the rush coming, but wasn't able to get out of the way in time, he got his arms around the man as he was run into, then fell backwards, thankful he hadn't been at an angle that would have him hitting his head on a stall door. Being unconscious right now would have been catastrophic. He had to win this fight and see what was going on in the rest of the weyr.

As he hit the hardpacked dirt floor, Gauden felt places where he would have bruises tomorrow. However, what he was really worried about was making it to tomorrow. The man attacking him didn't seem concerned with asking his name or giving a reason for starting the fight. That usually said there wasn't too much stability involved.
"Got a plan here?" Gauden grunted as he lifted a knee in an attempt to catch the man in either the groin or the stomach, if he could get the knee wedged under his attacker.

Alakin didn't see the knee coming, but he struggled with Gauden, sensing that the man was going to try to retaliate somehow. He felt it brush up his leg and arched slightly, trying to keep it from hitting any... sensitive areas. That meant he ended up with a knee lodged in his gut, not to mention the next inevitable toss off of the unsurprisingly strong Beastcrafter, but at least it didn't hurt too much.

Alakin shook his head. "You rider-lovers. Can't you see we'd be better off living without them if we have a chance?"
He aimed a sharp kick at the Crafter's side before he could get to his feet.

Someone who hates riders. It is them, come back, or someone new following in the murderer's footsteps.
Gauden rolled away from the kick and then got up on his knees. He quickly got to his feet and tried a double punch: one to the head, one to the stomach. There was disgust in his heart, but his mind was focused on finishing the fight quickly. If there was one who was being so open, there were definitely more.
And those marching wherhandlers worried him more now than before.

Alakin saw the punch coming, but couldn't avoid both in time. He knew a double-tap when he saw it. He was no stranger to brawls. Instead, he tried to block the hits with his arms; better bruises than a ringing head or a breathless stomach.

((I just realized I'm supposed to choose either attack or defend and cannot do both. I will follow the proper rules from this point on, since it's early enough in the fight to be salvaged.))
Gauden didn't wait for Alakin to recover from the block, and instead kicked out at the man's knee, hoping to collapse him to the floor where it would be easier to keep him down. They were done talking, unless the man had some more curses to throw.

Alakin's leg collapsed and he dropped to one knee, but used the angle to headbutt Gauden instead. He was done playing defense; time to take the offensive, if he expected to win this fight!

Gauden tried to block the headbutt, but he knew it was already too late to protect from the whole attack. He stumbled back, hopefully enough out of range that the crazed man would need to take a moment to reach him.

Alakin did have to get to his feet before he could pursue Gauden, but it only took a few moments and he rushed him, hoping to strike with a shoulder and send Gauden back into the stalls.
