PRINCESS ISLAND

General Information
Maintaining a superior defense is the pride of the Moon Division, defending even at the expense of attacking. However, this can be hard, especially for trainees who just got new magic weapons full of glowing and powers. Thus the Princess Island. At the center of the island sits a princess who will do absolutely nothing to protect herself, and it's up to you to build defenses that will withstand shadowling attacks so she she doesn't die in a horribly realistic manner.

There's four main paths for shadowling's to travel through, and you have 3 types of building materials to create your defenses from: straw bales, wood, and bricks. The sturdier the material, the sturdier the barrier, but the fewer you can build in the allotted time. After a set amount of time, the princess will crush a pumpkin pill, attracting varying amounts of lurking shadowlings. You get to watch helplessly from the observation station, without getting to attack yourself.

These creature are extremely weak and ill formed, coming up against a solid defense they will disperse, but in turn they also weaken said defense. When a defense goes down, they go right to the princess and attack her. Should she survive the wave, you get to go back down, rebuild, and do it again.

If you fail: the princess has died, horribly, and you've wasted a lot of time on this only to look fairly incapable. All things considered? Most pleasant course to fail.

If you win: peen points and bragging rights go to those with the healthiest princess and lasted through the most attack waves.
If you choose to go beyond 5 rounds, switch the enemy dice roll to 4 d20s.

    Mechanics
  • Your princess has 20 hp
  • First, roll the strength of you defense, using the dice for whichever building type you choose.

    Brick: 4 d12
    Wood: 8 d6
    Hay bales: 12 d4

The order of the die determine the HP for each barrier location. For example, with bricks, rolling 5/6/8/1, would mean that path 1 has 5 HP, path 2 has 6 HP and so on. With a wood roll of 3/3/3/1/2/5/5/2, the first 2 dice would equal the amount of the first path. Brick would be the least math-y of the building materials (you lazy asses.)
  • Roll 4 d12 for the attacking forces. Once again the order of the dice correspond with the path being affected. Then do the math to determine the status of your defenses and princess.
    Example:
    My defenses are 5/6/8/10
    The attackers are 3/7/3/8

    The result defenses are 2/-1/5/2
Negative numbers are taken off the princesses HP, leaving her at 19 HP.
  • Go back and rebuild your defenses in the same manner as before, you'll be building on top of old defenses so you add the new defense HP to the remaining defense HP. Negative numbers = 0 HP for the defense, not negative HP.
  • Minimum rounds to complete the course is 3

    Bonus Mechanics
  • Their defense expertise allows them to build slightly sturdier barriers. This applies to all paths that start at 0 hp. They do not stack. So if you are re-building on a barrier that lasted from an existing round, this bonus does not apply, as it is already still in effect.

  • Trainees: 0 hp bonus
  • Moon Trainees: +1 hp bonus to each path
  • Hunters: +1 hp to each path
  • Moon Hunters: + 2 hp to each path

Building the barriers would have been a lot more soothing if Ferros hadn't been emanating distress. It was work that needed care, attention to detail, and planning. But Ferros's muted anxiety was distracting Jordan, and by the time he started on the fourth barrier, he'd managed to hammer his thumb twice and knock the whole thing over once. That didn't help with his anger and frustration.

It wasn't Ferros's fault, really. The dragon didn't know why he was upset either, and he was having an unusual amount of trouble shaking off the strange mood. Jordan restrained himself from snapping at Ferros. Yelling was more likely to make the problem worse than solve anything.

I'm sorry, Ferros murmured.

It's okay. Which it wasn't, and they both knew it, but the thought carried the undertones of frustrated sympathy and worry along with irritation and distraction.

The time allotted for building was up. Jordan retreated to the observation booth. He did his best to ignore Princess Bix, who was occasionally singing a verse or two of a song and cooing at the butterflies that surrounded him. Where the butterflies had come from, Jordan didn't know, and he wasn't asking.

The shadowlings clumped on the paths, their numbers building into black clots of shadow. At some unheard signal, they all surged forward, waves of little monsters crashing against the barriers and overflowing them easily, scuttling up to attack Princess Bix. The golem shrieked and batted ineffectually at the shadowlings.

Jordan smacked his fist against the wall and growled. Then he pulled his hand back and glanced guiltily at the small dent in the wall. Oops.

When the shadowlings finally retreated and Jordan went down to examine the remains of his barriers, he found that there was nothing left but broken boards. He kicked one in frustration, then set about putting them back up. The golem was battered and bloodied, but disturbingly, it was still singing.

Once again, the shadowlings poured over three of the barriers like they were nothing, the swarms engulfing the golem and covering it completely, until the shadowlings began to retreat, leaving only a pile of dirt where the golem had been.

Jordan leaned against the wall for a few minutes, looking at the pile without really seeing it. The creepiness and uncharacteristic behavior of the princess golems made them easy to dehumanize and dismiss as objects. The appearance of other hunters might be a temporary surprise, and the golems' bloody and unpleasant deaths might be briefly unsettling, but the knowledge that they were dirt temporarily given a semblance of life through magic kept the golems' deaths from being particularly traumatic.

Were the golems made to look familiar to invoke a feeling of sympathy and protection? Or was it a desensitization process?

Ferros was calming now, listening to Jordan's thoughts. The familiarity of the dragon's curiosity and interest as he followed each chain of thought soothed both of them, the sense of thought and emotion falling into harmony bringing their connection back into balance. In much the same way as Ferros's agitation had distracted Jordan, the weapon's steady attention to what they were doing helped him focus.

Sometimes that worried Jordan; he and Ferros were two parts of a whole, interwoven closely enough that neither of them could quite tell where one ended and the other began any more, a deliberate act of bonding and locking themselves together, but they'd been forcibly cut off from one another's minds once already, and the cuff that locked Tracey away from Rep was silent proof that it was all too easy to block that connection. What would he do if separated from Ferros by accident or intent? He'd slid uncomfortably towards instability in the hours they'd spent in Halloween, without Ferros's heavy quiet consciousness to keep him anchored and cut into the spirals of overthinking and nervous tension.

Ferros was uncertain. It couldn't be a bad thing that they bonded more closely. Wasn't that symbiosis to be desired? He would fight separation with his whole being; if he grew stronger, perhaps he could break through any blockage of their connection.

If they overextended, Jordan countered, it might not be possible. He built the barriers almost absentmindedly as they debated, the exchange of concepts and images and memories flickering faster than words. Even Caelius had been susceptible to that problem - they'd seen Circe dissolve, no longer able to stay summoned.

When the timer sounded, Jordan blinked back to himself with a jolt. They'd built reasonably solid fortifications while they argued, their realignment allowing them to use memory and experience without full conscious attention. Time to retreat to the observation post.

The waves of shadowlings came rushing up the paths, broke against the barriers. Jordan smiled faintly as the fortifications stayed intact. Path 4 was weaker than the others; they hadn't spent enough time on it, or maybe not paid enough attention. The barrier broke partway through the wave, and shadowlings went swarming up to the golem, crawling up along its skirts and sinking teeth and claws into its artificial flesh. Jordan flinched as he realized suddenly who the golem was imitating this time; he hadn't paid much attention to the new golem's generation, too absorbed in building and conferring with Ferros.

Watching the shadowlings rip at Harrison, even as a princess golem, was - distressing. Was this how Moons felt, holding the line of defense while Suns charged headlong into danger?

The golem was scratched and nipped, bleeding from multiple little cuts. It's a golem, Jordan reminded himself.

Desensitization?

Dammit, Ferros.

You said it yourself.

Jordan returned to the task of rebuilding the barriers. It was a golem, yes, but it was visually identical to his lover. His love. Given their divisions and their roles, it was much more likely that he'd die first. He and Rep. Sun division. Reckless and headstrong and powerful.

In a quiet, selfish part of his heart, he was glad. It was likely that he wouldn't have to watch Harrison die.

Jordan leaned on the wall in the observation post, watching the shadowlings throw themselves against the barriers. The barriers held. Had he tried harder to defend the golem when the golem looked like Harrison?

Biased, he said softly to Ferros.

Is that a bad thing? the dragon asked.

Yes. Maybe. I don't know. One of the barriers broke. A shadowling went skittering up the path to scratch at the golem, briefly, before the waves retreated again.

You protect those you love most the best, Ferros said.

Jordan focused more intently on building up the barriers again.

You can't love everyone.

You shouldn't.

They'd waded through a sea of corpses, picked up weapon tablets from among a watery boneyard. They'd heard others die to protect them. They'd saved the world at the expense of much of Sun and Moon divisions. They'd killed Julie who was no longer Julie.

Jordan's hands stilled on the boards for a few moments. Harrison hadn't struck out against Julie. No. The thing that had been Julie. If one of the people he loved -

No. No. He couldn't think about -

You have to think about it, Ferros said, gentle and brutal. If it happens and you haven't thought about it, you'll be unable to hunt.

Boards and nails and a hammer in his hand that wasn't Ferros. Jordan paused, staring at the grain of the wood. Then he looked up and back, to where the golem sat admiring a flower.

It's not him, he said to Ferros.

No, Ferros agreed.

If it was -

I loved someone. I think.

Jordan watched the waves of shadowlings break uselessly against the barriers they'd built. Do you wish you knew?

I don't know. Ferros subsided, rumbling and hissing softly, the sound that accompanied his presence, constant and soothing. If it made me wish to be something else. I would not choose to remember.
