Malodore walked out through the doors to the auditorium and kept going, until it could no longer make out distinct voices. Now the prom was just a dull roar in the background, a faint glow throwing small shadows back from the tree it finally settled against. Nobody would bother it out here. It could consider things calmly... or, at least, in a calm setting.

As if confirming its arrival in a 'safe' location, its phone buzzed again. It produced the device, still wary. Riley - or possibly 'Riley' - again-

In my room.

Someone has stolen my bedsheets.

... It frowned, inwardly. Would anyone other than the genuine Riley have thought about that? It had indeed taken her bed things... and now that it thought about that, well... it was kind of creepy. But it had thought she was dead! She had been dead! And now she comes back and has strange texts on her phone and it had stolen her bedsheets and oh, Jack, she was going to think it was a maddened stalker. The plague doctor groaned and slumped to the ground, covering its lenses with its free hand.

... Another text.

I am dressed, in case you are wondering if I am decent.

...

Now it was just nonplussed. It hunched over its phone, composing its own response.

Have they let you come back? I would like to see you, if so. If you would like.

What didn't come across, of course, was the long pause after writing I would like to see you. It had no claim on her. It didn't. Memories were just that, memories. And yet it wanted her, wanted her so much that it was frightened by that want, that need. It would be so easy for that desperate love to twist into something worse, something sick and foul. Something tainted.

It was not going to let that happen.

... And it was not going to tell her about the bedsheets.

After sending its text, Malodore tried to calm itself, taking a few deep breaths; the actual action of breathing, while not something it did on a regular basis, was usually soothing and grounding. But its thoughts kept whirling in defiance of its will, and when the phone buzzed again the plague doctor actually jumped in place.

Sheepish, and glad nobody was around to see how twitchy it was, it checked again.

They have. You may. I would. Be cautious, one of the bogeymen are in the front room. There is no chance for a daring escape this night, I fear.

... Oh. Escape, of course. She wanted her freedom - well, naturally, she did! Surely that was why she was talking to it, though. It was a connection, a gateway. An ally, for now, nothing more. It closed its eyes and let that now-familiar pain stab through it and drain away. The sooner it could rid itself of its useless fixation, the better...

It flinched when the phone, unexpectedly, buzzed a second time.

I will be waiting for you.

It looked at the words numbly for a moment, then sighed, pulling its knees up and resting its beak on them, a pose that would have been impossible or at least very uncomfortable for someone who wasn't a long-necked plague doctor. Stable. Stable. She had to be surrounded by stable people. And at this moment, it felt anything but stable, mind spinning from emotion to emotion in wild, careening mental movements.

Stop. Think - think. She is here, so. She wants to see you, so. Things will happen, or they will not. Clear your mind, damn you- Its beak creaked and it quickly tapped out a response.

I will be there. Do you have any particular plans for this evening? Or any plans imposed upon you?

It sent it and pressed its eyes closed so tightly that its head started to ache in protest. Logic. Think! Stop... being this way, damn you... think...

Malodore remained still, brow furrowed underneath its mask as it wrestled with its own emotions. After what felt like a small eternity, the buzzing of its phone brought it back to itself.

Prom is my intended destination. They believe it will be a test of my ability to.. well.. not die, I suppose? So, yes. I will be attending. Eventually.

It closed its eyes again for a moment. A test, was it... and a Bogeyman was with her. If they were daring something like that, then surely... surely she was stable enough that its own emotional turmoil would not be a danger to her? It was just one person, after all, and they were going to take her into a room containing most of the student population. Some of whom were going to be very surprised to see her...

... well.

It took another deep breath and let it out, slowly. It would have to talk to her, if she were willing to hear it - to clear away some of these maddening assumptions that were only fueling the storm of emotions within it. To find out where they stood, and then move forward based on facts. It was not sure if she would be willing, but... well, if she weren't, that would be its own answer, wouldn't it?

Better to know, and deal with that, than to guess at half-truths. It straightened and tapped out another message before getting to its feet.

I approve of your continued existence. Shall I come now?

The reply came before it had gone more than three paces from the tree.

Quote:

...Are you not already on your way?

Nio Love
To: Riley Frightday, 22nd Day of 6th October, 7:50pm
I had to set a few things to rights before departing, but yes. I am on my way.

It was an entirely truthful response. As soon as it had finished typing in the message, it pressed send and resumed walking, picking up the pace a bit. It had no prom finery, having not really intended to go in the first place, or to leave the bathroom except in case of emergencies. But it was dressed in its usual neat and tailored fashion, definitely respectable if not particularly ornate.

Would she be expecting anything? And if so, would she rather have dead roses or a rope ladder? It was impossible to know. Trying not to think, lest the internal maelstrom start up again, it quickly ascended the path towards the demon dorms.
