There wasn't much of a reason why any sane Aelin would have traveled up this far into the northern river channels, at least not from anything Shibetsu could tell--granted there were always a few who were likely to be neither a subject of perfect mental health or likely to conform to the standards of what was normal for his kind. He hadn't met any Aelin who made a permanent home of the frigid waters, but that didn't necessarily mean they weren't lurking somewhere. Watching his sleek blue-black body as he swam by.

For that matter, Shibe could probably be considered amongst those who had lost his mind. What was he doing up here anywhere? The water was so cold that it felt heavy and slush-like as it pressed in around him. The nights were always hardest to get through and by early morning light the Kumonryu-Matsuba was forced to beach himself to soak up the sun's warmth and restore the warmth to his blood which moved sluggishly in his veins.

Like the scaly reptiles that lurked in the swamps Shibe lay on his belly in the mud that baked and hardened under the sun's golden rays, warming the frozen Aelin who--all at once--was glad for the dark coloring that consumed more than half his full length. It aided in restoring his frozen body while he slept, lightly on folded arms. Not so entirely oblivious to the world around him as one might have gathered by a first glance.

Cool Berry had breakfasted with her father earlier and seen him off. She knew of course he went out to flirt with the mares. That was ok by her. He was one of her fathers and she accepted as he was. Maybe he'd someday find that perfect mare and settle down. After cleaning up, the young filly looked around the house. She had a feeling today that she didn't want to spend it inside or even at home.

With a nod she turned and headed out. At first she wasn't sure where she'd go. Cool Berry flicked her tail as she hummed. The day might get warmer. A good place to play and stay cool was the nearby stream. Still humming happily she made her way through the grasses; pausing to stop and pick some flowers. She could weave them into her hair and pretend so many things. That she was a lost princess, or maybe a nymph. Cool Berry Mint giggled.

Everything about the land was foreign and unfamiliar to Shibetsu. The scents and sounds that swept in on the breeze from deeper inland were eerie and unnatural, as if--in beaching himself--the Aelin had been transported to another world entirely. Somehow, despite the fact, Shibe failed to be particularly wary.

Being alert was another matter entirely.

The whispered sound of rustling caused one daffodil yellow ear to twitch and leap forward attentively, even if the stallion was slow to lift his head from where it rested on crossed arms, stretched out on the damp bank ahead of him. With the breeze came a chiming sound, one that seemed familiar in a strange way. It was only as it continued to draw closer that Shibetsu realized it was girlish laughter that teased his senses. How long had it been since he'd seen anyone in his travels, let alone a female?

Perhaps the day was beginning to brighten after all. A serpentine frame propped itself on the corners of his elbows expectantly, wondering if the stranger would come close enough to allow Shibe a chance to inspect her and exchange easy-going greetings.
