  The doe closed her eyes and breathed in deeply, her rox waited patiently behind her. There was a slight pause, a faint smile, and the doe started moving again, seemingly following an invisible trail. Essence had been searching for marigolds when she had first caught a whiff of it. A peculiar salty tang in the air, unlike anything she had come across before. Intrigued, she had followed the scent, and so it was that she forgot her quest for the marigolds, and instead found herself travelling towards the South.

 For once, Squall was re-marking the clan borders out of duty and not for the solitude the task entailed. More often as not, this was where he'd run off to when everything started to turn dark and even little things made him snarl, but today he was here just because the task needed to get done, scratching out the paradoxical circle and cross under the tidewalkers symbol. It was then that he heard movement behind him, his head turning sharply towards the source of the sound. His eyes narrowed and caught site of shifting cream through the brush, and then the doe stood before him, a creature he had never seen before tailing loyally behind her. His brow furrowed slightly, wondering what had brought her down to the less hospitable south. "What are you doing here?" He was never one to beat around the bush after all. His words were gruff as ever but not unkindly.

For a moment, Essence was silent, her green eyes half-lidded as she watched him watch her. She was slightly annoyed that he was questioning her -- it was none of his business. She had half the mind to tell him as much (and would have), had she not noticed that his scent was familiar.
At length, the doe opened her mouth to reply. "I am searching. Searching for the source of the salt in the air." She sniffed. "And I believe I've almost found it."
Suddenly, the doe stepped closer so that their faces were side-by-side, her pale cheek almost touching his dark one. The buck had that same peculiar tang -- the tang of a crying wind, of water, and of salt.

The doe contemplated his question, and for a moment he read annoyance in her eyes. It would hardly be the first time his brusque manner had irritated someone, and certainly not the last, however her next words betrayed no offense. For a moment her search puzzled him, for the salt in the air was as natural as the ocean from whence it came-- sometimes he forgot not every kin was born and raised on the beach-- but before he could say anything she suddenly stepped forward, almost cheek-to-cheek with him, sniffing at his hair perhaps, he couldn't be sure. If it was the ocean she was seeking, its scent would certainly be on him, he had gone for a swim just a few hours prior and the salt perpetually crusted his hair and fur.
"Close, but not quite," he said in good humor, not having moved an inch, but the lean lines of his body were relaxed - he was unperturbed by her behavior. The one blue eye that could see her looked more intrigued than anything else, by this doe and her quest for a smell. Her own smell was tinged with the warmer wetter climes of the swamp's heart, where there was soil instead of sand beneath the hooves and more green than blue. She wasn't from the southern reaches, that was clear. He shifted so he could turn to fix both eyes on her without bumping her snout with his. "You seek the ocean, its not far from here."

"The ocean..." Yes, she had heard stories of it before. A great expanse of brine, stretching on as far as the eye could see -- the unknown big water.
She turned to face the buck, her tail swishing gently. "Will you take me there? Not for free, of course, I can pay you. I make salves, potions. Some for useful purposes, most for perfume." She waited, unsure. Was he the kind to care about such things? He did not look it.

"I have no use for such things," he replied simply, never one to soften his words with niceties. She would have to read his tone, ever gruff but gentled slightly by appreciation, to realize that his words were not derisive but approving. It was good of her to offer something in exchange, and he flashed her a smile. The expression, surprisingly, came easily to his harsh features.
"No payment is necessary, I will take you there," he glanced at his work- it was satisfactorily completed and like as not he'd be back soon anyways to renew them with harsher lines- then turned in place, bringing them almost shoulder to shoulder. The closeness was unavoidably a touch intimate, but its purpose was more protective, a subtle indication that he would not just lead her to the shore, he would take care of her as well. "The ocean is beautiful, something every kin should see at least once," he said as he led her forwards. The ocean was one of the few topics on which he would be free with his words.

The doe nodded, she expected as much. What took her off guard rather, was his smile. It was an easy smile and it changed him somehow... indeed, Essence now noticed that in a rugged, careless sort of way, this buck was handsome. A small smile played on her lips as she thought this, and she dipped her head as her smile widened.
At the buck’s offer, she uttered her thanks and called Crabapple to follow. He had been waiting silently while the two kin talked, and now padded along behind them, sniffing things as he went.
"What does it look like?" she asked, flickering her eyes up at the buck. "Can you describe it to me?" Not inclined to honour personal space herself, Essence walked comfortably beside him, not minding the intimacy. She could smell this mysterious “ocean” clearly on him, and it pleased her.

"The ocean..." the words were said with a slow, almost reverence as he led her through the thinning mangrove stands, "There is blue water, as far as the eye can see, salty to the taste. Far out it is dark and still; near shore waves of water with white crests crash against the beach. They sound like whispers, only loud..." He pauses, ears flicking upward. "Listen closely, and you can hear it now."

The doe watched the buck from the corner of her eye as he spoke so reverently of the sea. What an interesting kimeti...
She flicked her ears forwards as asked, and there was silence between them as she listened, closing her eyes to fully let the smells and sounds come. After a while, Essence spoke quietly. "It sounds... angry."
The smells told her more. That the ocean was harsh -- brutal even, but not completely uninhabitable. She could smell the water, the sharpness of the salt, the fresh sea wind... she breathed it all in.

Her words make him laugh. It is a surprising sound coming from him and warmer than one would expect, brief, but mirthful. "You are not wrong in that," he agrees with a half smile as he starts forward again. He has known much of the sea's anger in his lifetime, indeed he harbors a certain amount of it within himself. But it does not always surface, and indeed sometimes he could forget it was even there -- those were the most dangerous of times.
"There is anger in it, but there is a gentleness to it as well. So long as you respect the ocean, you need not fear it."
They are nearer now, by the doe's next words they may well be passing beneath the branches of the last mangroves and onto the shore itself.

His laugh took her by surprise, but pleasantly so. " He was a bit of a mystery," she thought. " A tall, dark and handsome one," said a small voice in her head. She quickly pushed that thought to the side. "Well then, I hope it knows I mean nothing but respect," she murmured, and then gasped reached the shore. So this was the ocean. Blue, as far as the eye could see melded with the even bluer sky and white-crested waves crashed against the shore, just like the buck had described. She stared in awe, mesmerised by its magnificence, by its beauty. Vesperiie Oh gosh, it is hard to keep my tenses right, haha. I'm so sorry if I stuffed it up. x: And sorry about the wait!

Amizade Totes made you wait superduberlonger >> There was another laugh in his eyes as the doe stopped dead in her tracks, transfixed by the ocean. It had that affect on the uninitiated. To him, the salt-laden air and spray embraced him like an old friend, and he took the moment to close his eyes, let the wind ripple through his hair. Then he stepped forwards, giving her a look that simply said 'come', and broke into a light gallop, closing the distance to the water and plunging into the surf.

She gasped and broke out in almost child-like laughter as he plunged into the water. "Oh, I couldn't!" she laughed, shaking her head at the buck. But all the same, she followed him, stepping closer to where the sand met the water. She stood still for a moment, feeling the sand shift beneath her hooves and the sun on her back. So this was the sea. She looked up, catching the buck's eyes and (with an uncharacteristic whoop), dove into the water. The salt stung her eyes and she wobbled momentarily as she tried to find her footing, but it was glorious. The cool water pulsed around her and she laughed again, flicking the hair from her eyes. Vesperiie No worries, Vesp. <3 Though I hope you get to have a break from school now. *hugs* And oh, it's so corny but I can imagine this happening and OH. >////< Do they even know each other's names yet? LOL. ...awkward moment when your tag is longer than your RP post. x-x;

Amizade Corny is adorably effective, I'm definitely making it more corny xD And yes, I have a week and half of break 8D And when school starts it should be not horribly bad for a while. Hopefully? xD Also you are adorable -squishes- <33 Also no ,they haven't introduced themselves yet LOL. This is me in the real world - "oh, btw, now that we're in the middle of a nice conversation, what's your name? 8D" She ventured closer but hesitated at the shore, and for a moment he thought she would not come in. Then she caught his eye and whooped, and he turned his head lest he get splashed right in the eye. Laughing, he made his way toward her with practiced ease, pressing his muzzle to her flank to steady her. "It's really something, isn't it?" he smiles, a statement more than a question. He is clearly at home here, with the surf breaking around his knees and sending spray up his flanks, salt crusting in his tail. It is as if the water completes him. He turns to her and introduces himself. "I am Squall," he catches a stray lock of golden hair with his nose, tucking it behind her ear. "And you are?"

"It's beautiful," she murmured. Her thoughts flickered momentarily towards her rox. When had he wandered off? And... when had she abandoned her dignity? She was making an utter fool of herself. He reached towards her, tucking a lock behind her ear "...Squall". She smiled at him, consciously giving in to the small part of her that wished to be swept off her hooves. "My name is Essence," she replied, and decided that the sea air was to blame. Vesperiie Hopefully. >w< Was expecting the corn and couldn't bring myself to read, haha. <33 ROFL, I am the same. So bad at talking to people. x-x;
