After a very busy morning, Iona found herself with some time to spare before she had to run off to continue her chores. In lieu of heading straight to catch up with her friends and her little brother, she found herself a quiet place to sit down and do something a little creative. Nowhere too out of the way. If she needed to be found, it would be easy enough. Recently she had figured out how to sort of knit with her fingers. It was nothing spectacular, just a simple chain. Iona had decided to make a surprise bracelet for Ionan. It was just something nice to do, and it’d be good for practice. His wrist was still a good deal smaller than most of her friends, so there would be less to potentially mess up with while finger knitting the bracelet. Nothing quite like doing a spot of people watching/listening and whipping up a little surprise for a loved one.

Ionan had been looking for his older sister for quite some time--of course, to a two turn old, anything past "right now" was in fact, quite a long time. The toddler still hadn't gained the ability to tell time--nor understand the concept that there were other things to do than spend time with him! Why couldn't Iona understand that nothing was more important than being with him? Why did she say she had to go, sometimes? He didn't like that. He didn't like that at all.

He had planned to share a bubblypie with her when he found her. Some older children from the creche had found out that he'd been given an extra pie to share--and well, that hadn't gone over well at all. Ionan, being young enough not to understand why the others would resent the idea that he'd gotten another and they hadn't--or the concept of being sneaky when given an extra treat, had carried it in his hands, happily making his way towards where he believed his older sister would be.

"How come you got two, and we only got one?" An older boy demanded, grabbing Ionan's pie and knocking the toddler down in the process. "How come she likes you better?" The boy took a bite out of the pie before Ionan could explain that it wasn't for him. It was for Iona! When he finally was able to explain, with much hiccupping and sniffling, it had been to one of Iona's fellow candidates. The older boy had kicked sand into his eyes and run off; they'd stolen his pie for Iona and--and--...

The candidate girl had patiently taken him over to Iona, where Ionan quickly attached himself to his sister and sobbed.

The sounds of approaching footsteps half caught her attention, but the sniffling and hiccuping is what drew her attention from her work. Looking up while collecting her progress on her brother's bracelet into her palm, she gasped and hurriedly stuffed her project into a pocket, jumping up to her feet at seeing who was coming her way. A friend of hers, Ailis, was steadfastly leading a sniffling, crying Ionan by the hand. Ionan looked tussled and dirty, sporting a skinned knee to boot.

"By the First Egg! Ionan, are you okay?!" Iona exclaimed as her brother passed from her friend to cling to her, sobbing into her shirt. She wrapped her arms around him and looked to Ailis, who gave a little shrug. Iona nodded her head to her friend and mouthed a silent 'thank you'. Ailis bobbed her head in return and went back to her studying. She was a good friend, Ailis. Not quite as outdoorsy as herself, but she was a great study buddy and had a good head on her shoulders. Funny too!

Returning her focus to her little cling-on, she knelt down to his level and gently wiped her hands over his face, wiping away some dirt that clung to his cheeks, forehead, and lashes. "What happened to you?"

Ionan launched into the tale of how he had survived the attacks of bullies. How they had stolen the bubblypie meant especially for Iona. How they'd pushed him down. He sniffled, leaning against her. "An' an' they took your pie!" The bubblypie was clearly what the boy was most upset about. He'd saved it especially for her! He'd asked nicely, and had even remembered to say 'tank you' when his request was granted. "I gotted it for you and they took it!"

The toddler burst into renewed tears. It wasn't fair! Not at all fair! They could have asked nicely for another pie, if they'd wanted to share! They didn't need to take Ionan's! He sniffled, wiping at his eyes. "Big kids," he explained through trembling lips. He rubbed at his eyes with a fist. "Took your pie an' knock me down an' threw sand at me an'--" his lips were wobbling dangerously, large brown eyes full of new tears, ready to escape at any moment.

He stopped crying long enough to ask, "Sissy, I bery brave? I fight em all off. No pie, though...Gone." He sniffled.

Iona held her much younger brother close, nodding her head and fussing over this, that, and the other with her hands as she listened to his harrowing tale of braving bullies and what they did. She gave him a squeeze and kissed his cheek, rocking him when he broke into tears all anew after his tale was finished. "Oh, Ionan...Please don't cry. It'll be okay. It doesn't matter that those kids took the pie you were bringing me. I love that you thought to bring one for me, but it chaps my hide that some jerks saw fit to attack you for it. It was absolutely uncalled for and an affront to how weyrbrats ought to treat each other!"

She sighed and wiped the cuff of her sleeve across his eyes as they swam with tears that threatened to fall. "Did you know their names? Or no? I'm sorry that you got hurt while trying to do something nice for your sissy. I'll have to make it up to you real soon." The mostly finished bracelet came to mind, but it could wait until after she got her brother cleaned up and gave those bullies a serious talking to. "Do you think you could tell me who they are, even if it's what they look like?" Yes, she was a candidate now, but it hadn't been all that long at all since she herself was among the ranks of weyrbrats. She would probably be able to figure out who the offenders were from what they looked like, after sorting through any exaggeration from the two year old Ionan. It wasn't unusual for her.

"You're the bravest brother any girl could ever have," She said with a smile and furrow to her brow, cupping his cheek in her hand. "I'm okay without a pie. I'd be torn to pieces if I didn't have my brother though."

At Iona's questions, the toddler nodded, wiping away any stray tears with his arm. "Uh-huh. Was Kriso an' an'," he sniffled, shaking his head. "Dunno. Kriso had some peoples but they dint hurt me. Only Kriso did. Were mad cuz I got two pies and they dint." He paused to let the injustice of this sink in. "Wasn't fair, 'Noa! I tol' em it was for you."

He reached down in his pocket and pulled a rock. He offered it to her. "I find this," he explained. "For you." He so loved finding small trinkets for his older sister. "Is pretty, huh? You like?" He leaned his head against her shoulder.

"Never gonna lose me, 'Noa. I always gonna be your brudder." He smiled at her, wrapping arms around her. "No worry."

Her dark eyes narrowed slightly at learning the name of her brother's attacker and she committed it to memory. With a nod of her head, Iona smiled and brushed off her brother's shirt. "Okay. I'll have a serious talk with Kriso and less of one with his friends. If they stood idly by while Kriso hurt you, they ought to be fussed at too." The girl paused her rant to look to her little brother. "No, it wasn't fair. It wasn't right. No one has the right to pick on anyone, especially someone much younger and smaller than themselves." She chuckled after a pause, tussling his hair gently. "The pie isn't important. We can always get another some other time, one we can share together."

Iona's gaze followed her brother's hand and she smiled at the gift. "Well, thank you, Ionan. It's very pretty. I do like it. And you know what? It'll last far longer than any pie you could have given me. I shall cherish this forever." Collecting the small pretty stone, she pocketed it and leaned her head against his.

"That does my heart good to hear," She said with a smile. "And I'll always be your sister. Mm! I have a bit of a present for you too. Now, I'm not quite done with it, but it's almost finished. Wanna see?"

"Seris talk with him," Ionan agreed. He did so love to see people get into trouble. Especially when they deserved it. Still, it was rather interesting to watch those that didn't deserve it get into trouble, too. "Picking on people bad." It had been one of the first lessons he'd been taught, and it'd stuck with him. Picking on people was just plain mean! He certainly wouldn't. Unless they deserved it. "More pies?" He beamed at the very idea. Ionan, though quite generous towards his older sister, could be quite selfish at times. The idea of many bubblepies-- it was more than the toddler could comprehend. "Ki-chen. Kay? We go eat pies! Lots and lots of pies! We 'vite Dugan and Aili and me!"

"Make necklace?" Ionan inquired, beaming at his older sister. "It pretty enough? You keep forever, then! Never ever lose it!"

At the promise of a present, however, he fell silent, eyes widening. He studied his sister, as if expecting her to pull something out of thin air and hand it to him. When she didn't, he said, "I wanna see! I wanna see! Lemme see, 'Noa!"

"Yes, a serious talk." And she would too! There would be no kowtowing to bullies. Iona's mind was buzzing with what she could and would say to Kriso and his lot, but she shook her head, refocusing on her brother. "Right you are, Ionan. Never forget that fact." She knew he wouldn't. Even if he did, she'd be there to remind him. The girl hummed thoughtfully. "I don't know you ought to be there when I do find them. I'm not going to hit them or anything, but I don't know what they'll say or do if you're there too." Well, not only that. Ionan did seem to have a love of stirring up a bit of trouble. She only wanted to talk, or rather fuss at them, about what they did any why it's wrong and cowardly to do what they did.

"Well, if you want a necklace I can make you one. It wouldn't make me have to restart what I have. I can just continue adding on to it. No biggie." Her smile grew to match his own beaming smile. "Yes, it is very pretty. I shall keep it wherever I stay forever. I can keep it in my bunk now and when I'm older, I can find a nice place in my weyr for it. I will never, ever lose it."

She gave loose a warm laugh at his begging. "Ionan, it isn't finished yet! I'll give it to you when I finish it. It won't take much time to do so. How loose of a necklace do you want? I can make it a little closer fitting or something that hangs down some."

Ionan beamed at Iona's promise that she would never ever lose the pretty stone he'd found her. "Good!" he said. "I never ever gonna lose the necklace either!" Ignoring the fact that he quite often lost things--and mourned the loss of each item before it was found by a friend or his helpful older sister, the toddler fully intended to keep the promise. "Tank you, sissy!"

He studied her for a moment, before frowning slightly. "Sissy, don't go too far," he said. "I miss you too much. If you move to a weyr, I come see you? I come see you lots. Kay?" The toddler had some seperation anxiety; and who could blame him? When he wasn't with Iona, the older weyrbrats tended to tease him.

"Hang down some!" He promptly responded. "So I grow in it, an' have it forever an' ever!" He paused, seeming to think of something. "Sissy, Dugan gonna swim? I swim?" Despite being Ista-bred, the toddler had shown a certain hesitance to--well, anything having to do with water. Still, Iona's friend Dugan had promised to teach the boy to swim.

Iona chuckled and gave her brother a nod. "Good! I know you'll take good care of it." She knew very well that Ionan had a habit of losing things, but she didn't mind helping him find things when he misplaced them or at the very least make him feel better if something happened or the wayward item couldn't be found. "You are most welcome, Ionan."

She blinked at him. "Nooo, I won't ever be too far away." She reached up and touched his cheek. "I'm always in your heart, as you are in mine. When I get old enough and I get a weyr of my own, of course you will be welcome to come see me. By then, I may be a dragonrider, so I'll have duties to see to and a dragon to take care of, but I'll always make time to see you." Iona drew him into a hug. "Don't you worry about it." She said, half releasing him. "There isn't anyone else who can be my brother."

"Alrighty then! I can make it a little longer. Maybe about...here?" She asked, fully releasing the hug to lean back and place a finger over her heart. "Think that'll be long enough? I dunno how big you'll end up growing. Maybe a little longer?" Iona smiled. "What do you think? How big are you going to get? Any guesses?" She paused when he did. "Oh, yeah. Dugan said he'd teach you to swim, didn't he? I think he'll be a great teacher. I've seen him swim and he's a strong swimmer. If you'd like, I can hang around during your lessons. Or...would you prefer to surprise me with your progress after a while?"

"Always in my heart," Ionan echoed with some difficulty. He was still learning to pronounce certain sounds. Why did d, t, and s exist? It wasn't fair. He wanted to be able to say everything! "Me too," he agreed. "I in your heart, too!" He pointed to Iona's chest--the opposite side of where the heart was known to be. "There," he said. "I there."

He wrapped his arms around her as well as he could when she pulled him into a hug. "No other brudder," he beamed. No one could ever take his place. No one could take Iona's place, either--she was both like a mother figure to him, and his sister. At the same time.

"I gonna grow big!" he informed her, delighted at the question. "Big, big, big! Bigger than you, sissy. Lots bigger." He held his arm as high as it would go to demonstrate. "Big, sissy! See? That long enough," he added, nodding. "It be too big if longer. Then I lose it." He hesitated. "'Noa, you watch? For few times? Then I 'prise you. Kay? Don't wanna be alone. But no 'stract Dugan. He teach me. I gonna swim! Like dollyfin!"

Iona beamed to her brother. "Good. I'm glad." She knew he was still working to wrap his head around some consonant sounds, but he was doing well with trying and keeping at it. He would get it before too long and then he'd be carrying on with the best and most chatty of them. And she had little doubt that he'd be a talker. "And you'll always have a home there."

The candidate laughed and gave Ionan an affectionate squeeze, twisting side to side. "Nope! You're all the brother I could ever want or need and I love you for it." She loosened her grip, and rocked back onto her heels to look to him fully, smiling.

"Are you now?" She chuckled. "Man, someday I'm going to be looking up at my little brother, aren't I? I'll be sure to make the necklace just right then. Can't have the necklace I make being too short when you get bigger. Have any requests for color? You know I'll help you find it if you ever lose it." Iona smiled. "Well, sure. I can watch for the first few times. Then I can leave you and Dugan to your lessons. Then you can surprise me when you're ready to." Another bout of laughter erupted from her. "I'll try not to. I'll be sure to be as not distracting as I can." She sighed. "Oh, no doubt! I bet you will be a top notch swimmer."

"What 'bout Dugan? You like him?" Ionan asked with all the innocence of a toddler. Was Dugan attempting to take Ionan's place as Iona's brother? He certainly seemed to hang about when he wasn't doing chores. "Not take my p'ace," he shook his head at her.

"Not bigger," he insisted with another shake of the head and a wrinkle of the nose. The toddler couldn't imagine being bigger than his older sister. "Same size. Is good, Noa. I never gonna lose it! You help me keep it and I keep it forever." He beamed at Iona. "Noa, when you 'Press, you take me flyin'?" Perhaps it was a sudden subject change, but that was to be expected when conversing with a toddler. "I'm gonna 'Press, too!" He seemed to think on her question for a moment, before giving her a sunny smile.

"Blue! I like blue today. I gonna 'press a blue! Blues are best! An' I gonna be the best swimmer!"
