I used to watch the first series, but I stopped when I went on vacation, some years ago. My brother recorded some episodes for me (and of a few other shows) but I never got around to watching. D:

Oh wait is it that one that looks like chinese munks doing elemental magics or something? (still haven't seen it but I saw something like that in the video rental store)

Aw why? I won't say anything like it's better or worse than A:tLA, but it definitely gives us a very interesting glimpse at the world of the Avatar, how it's changed and all. I encourage you to watch it and see those changes cat_3nodding

I've watched both, loved both.
I'm gonna enumerate the stuff in LoK below, but it's in spoiler tag so anyone who doesn't want to be spoiled won't emotion_yatta :
1. The score. I love how LoK has so much strings in it, while I think LA had more winds. Also loving the 1920s/30s/40s feel the music has, it gives it all both a sense of nostalgia and somehow lets today's audience connect this world to the avatarverse.
2. The look. I'm not much of a fan of steampunk, which seems to be the basis for LoK's look (at least for Republic City). But I think it definitely works here. I feel that Mike and Bryan wanted to show Korra as, while an incarnation of the avatar and therefore in a way is Aang, an individual, someone who is, at the same time, not Aang. Aang's journey was mostly in the country, in the desert, etc, and only comes to cities as stopovers. LoK's first season, however, thrust us immediately into the heart of the city.
3. The bending. The biggest difference is shown in the pro-bending. I'm going to salute the genius of whatever choreographers they have--the visuals here are so stunning, the bending moves so clear, you can actually see the difference between the modern bending and the bending in Aang's time. Especially when they mixed boxing and other western martial arts or fighting styles with the traditional bending we became accustomed to in A:tLA. Also we see the update to the police force with the metalbenders. Even Tenzin flaunts some moves (AIR BIKE FTW) that have been modernized.
4. The animation. THEY TOOK EVERYTHING UP A NOTCH. When I watch I'm just emotion_kirakira half the time. Heavy influences of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki, which just makes it more awesome.
And I'll stop there. I could write a whole essay on this (especially on the characters!) but yeah, gotta rein it in before I begin to deserve the tl;dr tag emotion_awesomecat_xd

agnikai has a lot of good points. I'm kind of in love with the older show, but the new show has amazing points and has many improvements...and really, though sad, it follows sort of the natural flow of history.
Noct, you should see these two series. They really are amazing, heartfelt, well-thought-out...
