The forest was quiet but not the sort of quite that signaled that something was wrong and for that she was grateful. The day was a good one, sun shone down through the canopy above her, the little beams of light glowed brightly against the gloom that was the forests natural state. The songbirds sung sweetly and bugs had decided to not make a meal out of her. She hadn’t tripped over anything in the undergrowth and no long suppressed memories of horrible defeats against the weakest of the dragons had surfaced yet. Absently she fingered the little bit of scabbard she could touch without having to move her arm too much.
Would she find the name for her weapon in this place? It almost seemed too good to be true, just like the forest was too peaceful for it to last much longer. By now Elleth should have learned that thinking of such things only made them come true. A roar of pure anger heralded the arrival of a Ysail, one of the largest she’d even seen. Its flanks heaved as it tore through the trees to get to her, eyes nearly glowing with hatred. Hatred for her or for her kind she didn’t know, but she did know that there wouldn’t be any getting away unless the creature was slain.
The Ysail started the fight with its trademark attack, the glowing leaves with the sharp edges soared for her, but her blade protected her from a majority of the attack. But the Ysail had only used its attack as a distraction, and a searing pain shot across her calf. There below her and around her jutted out roots shaped like spikes. One had scored a deep flesh wound on her leg, the others would have skewered her had they been longer. As it was Elleth thanked the Goddess that she’d had a good growth spurt and that her long legs had saved her from a very embarrassing death. What a way to have gone, impaled on roots by the weakest dragon race to exist.
Scowling Elleth ripped herself free of the failed death trap and charged the dragon, her body held low to the ground with her sword close to her body. Of course the dragon would have none of that and lashed out vines, trying to keep her back. It hadn’t stopped moving as it attacked and was now standing in a clearing just big enough for it, the trees on either side of the beast having been knocked over. It wasn’t as if it couldn’t fix the damage it had done.
At that moment Elleth felt herself slip, her leg buckling from the wound just as a vine connected solidly with her torso. With a cry of pain she was thrown backwards, her flight stopped by a tree. The ancient wood groaned at the impact but held. Her fingers twitched and her vision swam but she forced herself to stand
The forest was silent.
It took her a moment to realize that her sword wasn’t in her hands anymore and even longer to notice that the dragon wasn’t attacking. Instead it lay slumped to the side, its maw wide open and her sword buried nearly hilt deep in its eye. Elleth felt her breath catch, there. There was its name. Licht in der Dunkelheit. Light in the darkness. Her blade had slain the dragon in the only patch of light in the area and it glowed so brightly as the flames licked along its sides.
She scrambled over to it and scooped up her orb and pocketed it in an almost careless manner as her attention was focused the newly named blade. “Licht in der Dunkelheit.” She whisered softly, “Licht in der Dunkelheit!”
Grinning like a loon she picked the sword up and all but ran back towards the Dojo. Master Jovra was going to be so pleased!
