The continent of Ayr was just as she remembered it, desolate and wind scoured with not a single dragon in sight. It was fine for Elleth because she hadn’t come here to fight a dragon. No. She was on a quest to find a name for her blade, because without a name it would never live up to its potential and neither would she. To remedy this Elleth had been guided by Master Jovra to go to the places that she’d already visited. She scoured the city with her blade on her back, visiting all the merchants that had given her sanctuary and repaid their kindness with a bit of free work.
She’d gone home to the house that she’d grown up in, careful to do it at a time when she knew no one would be home. She’d been startled by the changes, which were small but glaringly obvious. It seemed like her Father had fallen back onto the family tradition and had taken in a fosterling. Her room was untouched and it was strange to see so many of her things still there. She left them all.
The tame world had given her no direction and no spark of ‘Ah Ha!’ and so she’d left it behind. The wilderness had shaped her far more than sparring ever had. But the memories of the dragons in the forests around her home were still too fresh and so she left visiting that place for last. That left only the land of Ary and its dragons.
And so she wandered the land, feet following a path that she had once followed before, the landscape different and yet somewhat similar. There was the ridge where she’d taken shelter only to nearly become food. Crouching down she peered into the tiny crawl space, only to get knocked back by something already in it.
The dragon was small, young and untried and very obviously out of its league. It squealed warnings at her and flared its wings, trying to appear larger than it was. Elleth clucked her tongue at it and backed away, only to bump into something standing behind her. Looks like the baby was only stalling until someone larger came for her to play with. Looking up at the larger Aryala she took note of its clawed hide and almost exasperated look. It was exhausted and worn and had probably hoped to find a quick meal out of the smaller creatures at its feet. The baby squealed once and dove back into its cover and left the two stronger creatures to fight.
Elleth’s unnamed blade was quickly unsheathed and the dance began. The dragon was already close to death yet it still gave Elleth a workout. By the time the beast admitted defeat her clothing was torn and she was bleeding from a few lucky hits. The baby dragon had taken the time to escape during the din of battle, if the new scrapes in the stone around the hiding spot were any indication.
Scoffing she scooped up her prize and headed out, Ayr wasn’t going to give her what she wanted, if the first two things it gave her was a half dead dragon and one so small that it didn’t even have the intelligence yet to call for its parents.
