Danny walked in the door without hesitating. Just a quick turn of the knob and she was in. Why would she need any trepidation- it was her best friend's room after all. She knew it better than her own practically.
The boil was on his bed, doing who-cares-what and Danny pounced, landing on his lap, interrupting whatever-the-hell he was doing.
"Okay spill," she said promptly. "You can't just leave for a week and not tell me!" She slyly smiled, somewhat .. triumphant? "Or did you think I wouldn't notice?"

He almost dropped the box. Instead he grabbed it, forcing his fingers to relax for a second before twisting and putting it on his desk behind him. "Um... well..." he said slowly, not even shoving her off--which showed just how strange a mood he was in. "I had somethin I needed to do," he said finally. "And I had to do it... well... I wanted to do it as soon as I could," he told her.

Unholy s**t who was this and what had they done with Roch. He NEVER let her sit this long. Not to mention he was talking really slowly and vaguely ...
Danny didn't buy it. "Something? What something?" she pried.
She noticed the box and said, "And what's that? Did your deaddy get it?" SO MANY QUESTIONS.

"I wanted to yell at Dad and Gramps," Roch said. "For never tellin' me about Tex." He turned, looking at the box she was asking him about, then reached out, grabbing it. "It's ah... well, we went to the old Scythe place. To get Tex's stuff."

"Tex? Who's he?" she asked obliviously. Why did that name sound so familiar ... It reminded her of someone blonde like Roch, but who was it ... Maybe Freya? No that had nothing to do with a "Tex."
Hmm. Danny, being her touchy feely self reached out to hold the box. Not tilt it or shake it or anything. Just hold. "Is this little box that important?"

"Tex. He was the guy I saw through in the trance, Danny. Big blonde cowboil--he was my uncle. They never told me about him. His weapon was a guitar, Danny. A GUITAR. An acoustic, but still--" He looked at the box. "That was his," he said. "Dad and Gramps said I could have it, that they couldn't use it, but--" He reached out, taking it back. "I don't want to, not yet."

Danny let him take the box back willingly, her hands now reclining under her chin, one thumbnail being bitten. Tex ... Blonde cowboil. Where had she-
"Oh!" Danny sat straight up, "The one that was dating May?" Well could you even really call it dating? Danny knew they kissed once, but it wasn't even that good of a kiss. It was more like being flirtatious. They didn't even get to their date or their babby WHY SOBBB.
Danny slumped back down, relaxing now. "He was your uncle? I mean he looked kinda like you ... oh I guess his name was Scythe too huh." Well whadya know.
She looked over at the box that Roch was treasuring so dearly. "You don't have to use it if you don't want to," she said softly. How Roch didn't want to "use a box" was beyond her.

He hesitated, then he flipped the lid of the small carved box, opening it. Inside there was a short row of guitar picks. "These," he said quietly. "These are what I don't feel right using... not just yet. They belonged to him." And he didn't fill those cowboil boots, not really. Tex wasn't a thief or a kid that should be in juvie.
"What about you? Who were you in the trance?" he asked her, wanting to change the subject.

Danny eyed the picks, not really sure how to examine them. She'd always played with her claws, so picks had never been a question. They were so far out of her range that it didn't even matter.
She picked one up and flipped it over before setting it back in the box. "I dunno, just use them when you want to. There's no rule saying you have to." She paused and then said, "Wait, is there?" No no, picks didn't have rules. That's right.
Danny idly rocked on Roch's lap. "I uh. I was May..."
Where she was sitting just became about 293849283498 x more awkward. GG Danny.

Roch pushed her onto the papasan bed pillow next to him, getting her off of his lap. "Oh," he said. "What the jack am I supposed to say to that?" he asked a second later. Tex loved her, personally I found her a bit annoying. But at the same time--"
He sighed, closing the box and putting it on the table before running a hand over his face. "I don't know. They never even got a date, y'know? And I would yell at him, call him a slow jacker--if I hadn't failed every attempt at a relationship I'd ever made."

Though initially she was surprised, by the time she hit the pillow Danny had cracked a smile. That was the Roch she knew. Much, much better than the spacey, slow-talking dope she'd seen earlier.
"She was really really weird. Like that snail thing? I stopped paying attention when she started crying. That and how she wanted to protect like ... EVERYTHING." A more serious, darker look crossed her face, "If it'd been me with that hunter ... I'd have punched the crap out of him."
She leaned more heavily into the papasan and sighed. "I dunno, I thought their little romance was ... kinda cute. I just wish they could've said something more before they died..." She chuckled lightly "The last thing I heard May say was about apple pie," Danny mused. For some odd reason, of all the details in their trance, that had stuck with her.

Roch snorted. "She was nuts," he said bluntly. "But she made him happy. That's all that mattered to me," he said more quietly. "Jack, Danny, I was SO pissed afterwards that it sort of... covered the hurt. I wish I coulda known him," he said. "I wish he coulda taught me how to play--not fight, he really sucked at fighting--but playing... He was good. He was really good."

"He sucked balls at fighting," Danny added helpfully. "May did too though. I liked her snake, he was nice."
Danny put her head on Roch's shoulder tentatively. "Y'think the teachers still have those stupid bracelets May gave 'em?" She hadn't bothered to check, but part of her hoped they did. Well no, she knew there was probably no way they'd survived nearly ... 20 years?
After a few moments of silent, she sat up and said, "But hey- you're really good too Roch! Nobody here plays the guitar better than you. Well I mean except me..."

"Yeah, I bet they have them," Roch said. "Well, some of them. And thank you so much for that, Danny," he said dryly. "Remind me to take you to meet Bones someday, alright? He might laugh at you, though, then hit me."

"I'd smack bones in the face," Danny said without hesitation. Nobody hit her Roch.
Except her.
She pulled her legs up until they were on the papasan bed and wrapped her arms around them. "D'you think ... D'you think we should just leave the hunters alone?" She wasn't looking at Roch, pretty much predicting his answer. "I mean ... if those student hadn't taken his stuff...."
