There were times when you should pay attention to what you're doing. For example, you watch your fingers when prepping food, or look at someone when being spoken to. Ok, that at least gives the illusion you're paying attention. But, walking was another instance when you shouldn't let your mind wander. Satoshi hadn't learned this lesson and let his mind wander. There were a few things he wanted to pick up for his new dorm room, and his mind continued to run the list as he walked.
Looking down at his watch to check the time, the boy continued to boldly stride down the sidewalk. For the most part people moved out of his way. He seemed to have that air of arrogance about him and people moved rather than bumped his shoulder. But that strut came to an abrupt halt when his body met with another's. He never had a chance to see whom he bumped into as his world went topsy-turvy.
One moment he was chugging along, the next-BAM... On his a**!
" "Sorry, I wasn't paying attention." Yea, that's right. Take the initial blame to settle the situation. Girls liked that. "I had a lot on my mind," although it wasn't extremely important, "and I should have been looking where I was going." He noticed the scattered books, obviously belonging to the girl. He was quick to get on a knee and help collect the items before offering them in a peace attempt.
"You alright?" He finally asked, looking the girl right in the eyes. "I hope I didn't hurt you at all." He muttered, standing to his feet and offering a hand to help the girl up. ✖

Books, it was a great store, the sales on the books were amazing, so she had gone a little overboard on her selection. Stories of torture, heroism, triumph over adversity, that sort of thing appealed to her. And since she'd been to the school, the books were her best companions. As she'd been leaving the store, some foolish idiot had run right over her, causing her new treasures to go flying, and her to be sprawled over. He saw her right side, which admittedly was her better side, her hair was a scattered mess, she felt like growling at him for knocking her over. However he'd landed on his a** as well so she wasn't as out of sorts as she had been, and he apologized immediately. She took the books he'd picked up and began tucking them away in her bag. She'd been a bit too excited to actually stow them away and had idiotically walked out with the stack in her hands, " I was far too excited to pay attention, myself. I should have watched where I was going, myself, so it is at least half my fault." Her voice was lower than most girl's voices, but it was unmistakeably female. She finished tucking them away in her bag, and stared at the hand he offered in some confusion, " I am unharmed, no need to worry yourself over it, nor apologize to me." She stood on her own, still missing the meaning of his hand being held out to her. Facing him he could clearly see the scar that ran from under her hair towards her mouth. The right side of her face was clear, the left side marred slightly by that scar, reflexively she smiled at him, " Thank you for helping me pick them up." This was said as she noticed one of her books had landed a little farther than she thought. Grumbling to herself more so than him, she stepped over and picked it up, the title of the book, Shemnal's Damnation.Turning back to him she wondered for a moment, he was...a fish? The seriousness on her face caused her brow to wrinkle, then again the reflexive smile when she noticed she was staring too long, " Are you a student as well?" She'd yet to meet a male student from her school, so it was a good chance to at least know someone around her age, and who wasn't a majin...but then if he wasn't a majin, what was this boy that had run her over. So much of the world was a puzzle to her, but she would rectify her lack of knowledge, and that would make her more capable at making money. :~:

His hand dropped when the girl refused to take it, a silver eyebrow lifting curiously. Alright, so she wasn't the sort to accept help. That was kind of cute actually and a small smirk appeared back upon his face. And Satoshi was just as guilty of staring, his eyes focused on the scar as his mind began to wonder about how she acquired it. Today wasn't the day to ask. Perhaps on another. "You must love books. You bought more than I've honestly read in my life. Can't say I share your enthusiasm for reading." He muttered, checking out her a** as she bent down to retrieve another book that seemed to fall further than the others.
"It seems we're both at fault for not paying attention," He chuckled lightly, shifting his weight to one foot while he watched the girl curiously. "And yes, I'm a student at the school. I'm new actually. So far it's a little boring since I've yet to make any friends... but I can't really go home yet. The parents demand I learn magic n' all." He seemed to roll his eyes slightly at the mention of his parents, but shrugged the topic off.
"And since I caught your gaze, yes... I'm a mononoke. It's kinda obvious with the whole gills and scales going on." He made a general open palm sweep of his hand around his face, gesturing to his fish like features. Chicks usually digged the gills. "My name is Satoshi." Again, he offered his hand, wondering if she'd accept the gesture. Usually he'd kiss the back of a woman's hand, but he'd spare her the unpleasantly this time. "What's your name?"

At his commentary on her love of books she gave him a much more genuine smile, no it wasn't happiness, but it wasn't the reflex she'd had earlier either, " Reading is a passion. Most don't understand it, nor do they understand my interests." The sentence almost died when he spoke of his parents, only a small mention, but something that made her scowl intensely until his voice called her out on her having stared at him curiously, " A Mononoke?" Her lack of knowledge was obvious as she looked him over again. She kept her distance due to not knowing him at all, she had at least been taught that much. One did not simply start asking a million questions of a person you did not know. As he offered his hand with introduction, she knew this one, and took it, her hands scarred and rough feeling from several years of working with them, her grip was strong for a girl's as she gave his hand a polite shake, " I'm Illystria. Nice to meet you, Satoshi." Her tone was formal sounding, she released his hand and heedless of the social norms stepped a little closer to investigate his gills and scales, it was purely curiosity with something she'd not seen before, nothing even slightly out of the ordinary for her, but it might have been encroaching given societal norms. " What kind of a witch do you plan on being?" This was an obvious question from her point of view, no matter how she was encroaching on his personal space. :~:

Satoshi blinked a moment. Was this chick serious? But he cracked a smile and laughed lightly. She really was a student! "Yes, mononoke." He confirmed, allowing her to inspect the gills. He took pride in his appearance, knowing how awesome it was to so unique. "And yes, they work. I can breathe under water."
He wanted to ask about the scars. She was asking personal questions... But he resisted. He was more important anyway. He was also glad the girl had a nice, firm handshake. So many girls gave him that limp hand and it was almost unattractive on it's own. This girl was turning out to be a great change for the normal chicks he flirted with.
"As for which kind of witch, I don't know. That's why I'm here at the school, ya know?" Smirking a little, he shifted to slip an arm around Illystria as he gestured up the street with his free hand. "Why don't we move off the street. It's getting busy now and I feel if we stand here too long someone else will bump into us. Do you know the city at all? We can go get a bite to eat somewhere, if ya'd like. My treat."

When he reaffirmed his species she simply nodded. He answered the next question before she asked it to which she was grateful, in an odd way. He seemed to be resisting the urge to ask something, but before she got her chance to ask what the looks were for he asked her if she'd want to eat something. That reminded her that she had not eaten since the previous day. She was too busy learning to eat anything so of course it was lost on her, plus the lack of sustenance each day was something she considered to be normal, " Your treat?" She sounded genuinely surprised at this offer, granted if he took it back afterwards she wouldn't be surprised, most people did when they found out how much she could actually eat given the chance. " I am not exactly totally familiar...but I saw a small cafe up the street a bit from here on the way to the book store." She hoped that would be enough information. She then realized that he'd wrapped his arm around her waist. That was fairly familiar of him, and a bit odd. Rather than ask questions she assumed that it was something that those in the outside world did, rather than thinking he might just be flirting with her. Taking a decent pace, she headed up the street, granted if his legs were longer than hers, he'd easily keep up, even with his arm around her waist, but she wasn't going to slow her pace for anyone as she moved through the slightly more crowded area with ease. The cafe was small, intimate and rather stoic looking, but the smells coming from it were mouthwatering. She glanced to him and gave a reflexive smile again, " Does this meet with your approval?" Polite, but even if it didn't she'd likely come back on her own to find out what the delicious smells coming from the place were. :~:

"I'm not familiar with the area at all, so I'll just let you lead." He stated, keeping pace with the girl easily enough. He matched his step with hers while she lead the way. For a few moments he was silent and mapping the city mentally to remember where he was later. He still had to go shopping for clothes, a desk and that large kiddie pool he was eyeing in a toy catalog.
When they stopped outside the little cafe, he glanced around for a moment before nodding his approval. "Yes, this place is perfect." Releasing Illystria he stepped ahead to open the door. He waved her in first before he followed to line. It seemed like a good place given the amount of people there. The menu had a large set of options as well! He'd definitely be coming back.
He decided on what he wanted as they stood in line, and once they reached the counter he grinned at the woman behind the register. "I'll take three bottles of water. No, four. Four bottles of water and the BLT sandwich. Can I get that on wheat bread with a side of blue cheese for the French fries? Oh, and whatever she wants." Once his order was in, he stepped aside for Illystria to say what she wanted. While he stood there and waited, he pulled his wallet out in preparation to pay.
"Don't worry Illystria, you can get whatever you want." He reassured, flashing her with a happy smile. It also seemed he feared no price as he waited for the girl to give her order.

He was trusting her to lead them around, that was a first, but it didn't faze her too much. She kept her mind on the fact that it was purely chance he'd run into her, so there was little meaning to his trusting her as the 'leader'. A small smirk of pride crossed her face and disappeared as he said it was perfect. Others tended to exaggerate, however she took a little pride in accomplishing any of her given tasks, she balked as he held the door for her, but instead of simply waiting for him to go in, she realized she had to step through first. She was learning, despite the fact that this gesture seemed a little too close to being treated like some sort of lady. She had been staring at the menu the entire time, vaguely she heard his order, figuring that he'd pay for his and she'd pay for hers, sure he'd said he'd treat her, but they'd only just met. And what she was wanting would be surprising to say the least. His statement of informing them he was paying for whatever she wanted caused an eyebrow to raise under the vast amount of hair she had, and his restating it to her caused a close to genuine smile to cross her face, You may take that back in a minute. was the thought that crossed her mind as she finalized exactly what she was ordering. " The steak sandwich, honey wheat bagel for the bread, cheddar cheese, garlic sauteed mushrooms on top, buttered, Nothing but that on the sandwich. A baked potato, with butter, sour cream, cheese, the shredded, not the nacho, and bacon, a Caesar side salad, with ranch dressing, extra ranch, and a bowl of chili with cheese, no onions. A bottle of water, and a soda, that comes with free refills right?" Her question was met with an astonished nod from the woman behind the counter, " Then that's it...for now." She spoke as she eyed the chocolate cake, then decided it was...well better not to indulge in sweets on top of getting a full day's meal. Illystria glanced around to see if there was an open table where they could sit, figuring he'd either pay the bill in full, and ask her to pay him back later, or he'd ask for her to pay her half now. Kindness only lasted so long with most people, and she was likely to take a little advantage of it for the time being, that didn't mean she wouldn't pay it back in kind...normally, but it did mean one had to keep to their word to get the kindness back, " Where do you want to sit?" :~:

Shocked. That was the look on his face as he stared jaw-dropped at Illystria. 'Damn, this girl can pack it in! Where the hell does she put it all?' He thought to himself as the girl rattled off her order that tripled his own. But, he was a man of his word. He said he would pay for whatever she wanted, even if it would feed several people. Only thing that would piss him off is if she didn't finish it... But something in the pit of his stomach told him she'd polish it off with no problem.
"It doesn't matter to me where we sit... but perhaps near the window? There's an open I can see from here." He muttered as he turned to pay the woman. Wow, that was one hell of a total. But he smiled and thanked the woman before grabbing the order number card and his bottles of water. In their own way they consumed a lot of something. She'd probably laugh if she knew just how much water he consumed in a day.
"I'll go claim the table and put our number up while you fill your soda. The chick at the register said the kitchen would bring our order right out to our table, which is nice. This place really is pretty cool." He muttered, nodding towards the table in question. And just as he said, he took claim to it while she got her soda at the fountain machine.
When she returned to the table Satoshi was already seated and one bottle of water emptied of it's clear liquid. He flashed her with a smile while opening a second bottle. "While we're waiting for our food.... I have to ask. Do you always eat like that? I find it fascinating." He admitting, leaning back in his chair while one arm slung over the back. He was so relaxed and casual, watching her curiously. "I don't think I've ever met someone who eats that much, let alone a woman. Well no, my older brother could probably eat more than you, but he's a fish mononoke too and a bottom feeder. So he's always eating."

She glanced back as he muttered about the seating not mattering, catching a small glimpse of the total, Didn't mean for it to be that much... She sighed as she took her cup and went to fill it. Mentally she prepared herself for the soon to be onslaught of questions, it was something that always happened, any time anyone heard her ordering food. Upon her return, she sat down across from him, she'd noted that his tone was not quite so formal, nor was his attitude quite so reserved. He looked relaxed, and the question was about her eating. Taking a long drink of her soda, and closing her eyes she enjoyed the bubbling sensation as she swallowed. Illystria cleared her throat a little, " I eat that much when I can." It was simplistic in the answer, no need to explain why, unless he asked more directly, " A bottom feeder? So like a walking garbage disposal? She didn't realize that perhaps that would be severely rude to say about his sibling, and took another drink of her soda. Soon enough her salad came out, drenched in ranch dressing. Her thank you was mumbled as she started to devour the salad, granted it was her least favorite part of any meal, but the vegetable was needed, as was the fat in the dressing. She was not a severely messy eater, but she did inhale the food rather than really tasting it. Yes it tasted good, but that was not the point, it was sustenance. :~:

"Eat like that when you can? That makes it sound like you never eat at all." Satoshi said with a bit of shock in his voice, but he continued to smile at the girl. She really was a fascinating one!
"And yea, I guess you can call my brother that. I don't think there is anything he wouldn't eat. My mother used to tell us the story of when she found him eating dirt. Fistfuls of it, as if it was candy!" He took a nice, long chug of his water bottle, looking at the waitress as the salad was placed down for Illystria. At least the food was going to be brought it waves! He didn't think it all would have fit on the tabletop.
Since his food was still in the back, he continued to talk while she ate. "Anyway, my parents sent me to the school. They said it was to improve my magic, but I know it was to get me out of the house. I'm not dumb. I was fighting with my siblings all the time. But I have 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Kinda hard not to fight with someone when we're always in each other's faces." He began to explain, still relaxed. "Guess mom had one too many head aches, and I did start most of the fights." He shrugged slightly as he shifted in his chair to get more comfortable.
He took note on how fast she consumed her salad, a silver eyebrow raising yet again. She ate as if there was no tomorrow! He was growing more and more curious about her by the minutes. "Illystria, do you get heartburn at all? If I ate as fast as you just did I'd have heartburn all night. It's amazing." He said, laughing lightly at the situation. But the waitress delivering more food interrupted the start of the conversation. His BLT came with her baked potato and chili.
Adjusting himself to eat, he was OK with the conversation dying out to consume his own food. He ate much slower than she, enjoying the meal. But by the time his sandwich was gone he was craving more water and chugged another bottle.

There was a wry snort from her, but she continued to eat her food, the potato and the chili arriving at the same time, " I don't eat vert much, very often. So I feast when I can." Again a straight and blunt answer, he asked and he received his answer. No need to explain more, he wouldn't want the rest of the story anyway. She smirked a bit at the thought of a child eating dirt, then snorted a bit, as she pulled up her hair to get it out of the way while she ate her chili and the potato. Her hair being pulled up gave a much better view of the scar on her face as she continued to eat more, shoveling it in as fast as she could manage, sipping a drink now and then to get through the food. She paused, " I don't think I've ever even heard of that. The only time anything even remotely seems like that is when I haven't eaten for three or four days." Silence resumed over the table as she worked on finishing her food. Just as she finished the last spoonful of her chili her sandwich came out, the plates from before removed as she stood up to get a refill of her drink, long hair dangling down her back as she walked. A few male customers eyed her, but seemed taken aback with the scar on her face as she made her return trip to the table. Sitting down, she took another drink, then started in on the sandwich, making very little noise with each bite, concentrating on chewing through it and not leave a single morsel on the plate. Pausing a moment she glanced out the window, then turned back to her sandwich and finished the last few bites. That would last her a while, she would be fine for the next day or two. Picking up her drink she raised it in appreciation of his feeding her, " Thanks for the meal." :~:

The conversation at the table was replaced by the sounds of eating. As the two of them enjoyed their food, Satoshi would casually look over at her. Oh yea, he wanted to ask about the scars. But it really wasn't his place to. Chicks didn't like those sorts of questions and he really didn't want to piss this one off. She was far too fascinating to scare off so soon. But her words brought him back to the table and he blinked. "Huh?" He looked down right confused for a moment before it all came back to him. "Oh, right. I paid for the meal. Sorry I was lost in thought there." He chuckled, holding up his last bottle of water to clink it against her soda cup. "I always enjoy a good meal with good company. And since you didn't steal any of my food, like my siblings would have... I consider you great company. Though I will admit, I'm surprised you ate it all. I thought you'd at least leave a few bites behind." He had taken note on how clean her plates left the table.
"You are a very interesting girl Illystria. I hope we can do this again some time. Maybe then you'll open up to me a little more, hmm? I would love a chance to hear more straight to the point answers." He explained, sitting back once more to relax in the seat. He made no motion to get up and leave yet, really in no rush to do so. "Maybe I can even consider you my first friend here at school. Being new I don't really have any yet." He wasn't going to include the random classmates he cheated off of during tests as friends. No, those were tools.

She blinked at being called good company, however she noticed that he kept letting his eyes linger on her facial scar, but she waited for him to continue his chatting about his family a little, and then he floored her a bit, he said he would consider her his first friend. Her jaw almost dropped, then she recovered, " Interesting, though if that is true this would make you the first friend I have ever had." She smirked a bit allowing that bit of information out. It was a bit abnormal, but it was due to her father and his pushing her around, but he wasn't there now, she could allow people to know a little of her, right? " Also, you seem to be curious about something, why not ask? As you've said I'm in the least surprising with my appetite, and most girls apparently can't even eat as much as I can." She gave him what was a bit of a cocky grin, not happy, but a bit of pride in it. Though that faded as did her grin. Words echoing as to being too prideful causing her to be impossible to deal with. But then it was part of who she was. She sighed, " That's if you feel like asking of course." Her eyes shifted to the window and she watched the people on the outside of it pass by, they often passed by and she wondered what their life was like. Had it been what she knew, or was it something different, already it seemed that Satoshi had been raised differently than her, but she wasn't sure. He seemed he had affection for his family, at least mild affection. :~:

He looked at her with a bit of shock. "You mean to tell me you have no other friends? Not even at home? That's hard to believe..." He said as he crossed his arms over his chest a bit, studying her more. How could anyone not even have one friend? It was too impossible to think of.
"And although I'm curious about many things, I'm not going to ask. There are certain issues I'm sure you don't want to discuss, and it's never polite to ask a lady when she's not willing to tell. So I won't go there. Perhaps when we're better friends I'll get you to lighten up a little more and actually chat. Your straight to the point answers are well, straight to the point." He matched her cocky smile with one of his own, staring right into her eyes.
"And you're more surprising than you realize. The appetite thing kind a floored me. But I think it's ... how to put this in a way you won't take offense." He paused to think a moment, his lips pursing slightly as he tried to search for a good way to put it. "Well, it's cute. It's different and cute. I'm glad to meet a girl that's not worried about what she eats. Other girls that I've gone on dates with would eat half a salad and a diet cola. Not that this was a date or anything, just using it as reference."
He smiled again, then glanced back towards the counter. "And speaking of food... I don't know about you, but I've been thinking that chocolate cake ever since I sat down. You want a piece? I'm gunna go get one."
