The forest was very, very dark this late at night. Trees clung to one another for warmth, or so it seemed. Their canopy draped full and thick like an impenetrable ceiling, refusing even the smallest sliver of moonlight to shine through.

Each of the two candidates who had, for some reason, expressed interest in being mentored by Noland, were sent a letter. It was a very boring and formal letter, with very few words on it and only the barest of essential information. Meet at the darkest part of the Weeping Forest at the witching hour. It was signed with a full signature, however, all swirls and elegance loopty loops. Noland had never had to sign anything before, and he thought it rather amusing to take his time and write it out as lavishly as it could. It came out rather distressingly silly.

But the exact location of the forest was not explained, and the students would have to find Noland on their own. This was the first of many tests the ghost set before them, and the most obvious of games.

Hide and Seek.

Mentorship Start

Your first step to mentoring is simple - find your mentor! He's hidden in what he's described as the darkest part of the Weeping Forest - which is hard, since all of Weeping Forest is dark. At least you know what the witching hour means! Right?

...Right?

OOC:
Roll 1d100 to find the darkest part of the Weeping Forest. RP out your results. You get as many rolls as you need to complete this task - or fail it. You have 24 IC hours.

1-10: You are completely lost. You're probably going to die out here, aren't you? Lose 2 hours in your grief.
11-20: You find a remarkably dark part of the forest! This must be where Noland is! You spend an hour searching.. and find nothing. Lose one hour.
21-30: This part of the forest is beautiful. Lush, blooming with dark flowers, and quite comfortable. You decide it's a nice place to take a nap. Lose one hour.
31:-50: This is clearly not the darkest part of the forest. You keep moving.
51-60: This part of the forest is dark.. but the sound of howling makes you quicken your step. No, certainly not here. Gain a half hour.
61-70: Did you remember to bring a snack? Feargy bars, how delightful! Gain a half hour.
71-80: Something is chasing you. Run. Gain an hour.
91-100: You stumble upon a part of the forest where you can't even see your hand in front of your face anymore. You're sure this is the darkest part, but you can't see Noland - you can't even see yourself! You're frozen, immobile, what do you do? (Congratulations! This is your final post for now!)

Stealth was always something Shun felt was an important skill. It could be utilized in many different ways. When he received the letter in turn, he made sure he had Mitsu with him to decipher it correctly. Once that was done, he ventured out to take care of what needed to be done. He wasn't so sure what to make of that signature at the end, but it really didn't matter. Once he was in the forest, he furrowed his brow as he saw no one around right away. Hm. The Reaper idly wondered the probability of the ghost being late.

He wasn't familiar with it so it was hard to say.

Actually, considering this was stealth, it probably wasn't too probable. He simply had to locate where Nolando was. Well, it sounded simple. It might not be that. The ghost had to be somewhere around this forest. After waiting on his own for a little longer, he went ahead and set forth to try and locate where the 'target' was.

Moving on through the forest, he slowly realized that he was losing more and more visibility. The area around him was gradually becoming darker, and as a result his steps were becoming more cautious as well. At least it likely meant he was going in the right direction. Hopefully. For while he was alright in dim lit areas, this was past that point. And so, he was working on trying to use his ears as Mitsu once attempted to train him on. It was something he still needed more work with.

Good thing too, because now he couldn't see anything at all. He may as well have had a blindfold on it was so dark. This had to be the darkest part of the forest. Granted, he couldn't tell if Nolando was here or not since he couldn't even see his own hand before him. And he didn't call out for the guy either. No, instead he just stood there in the dark, waiting. Making noises in a place where he couldn't see if anything else was around him was a rather poor thing to do in his opinion.

Quietly, he tried to listen for signs of movement from anyone or anything that might be nearby.

The tatzelwurm's decision to mentor under the silent masked creature was really for one reason: it knew how to disappear. Such was a sort of sneaking that she wanted to become knowledgeable of. Truly, Noland was some sort of stealth, no, invisibility expert she'd heard about.

When her note arrived, Levi noted how fancy it was decorated. Maybe Noland was some sort of artist in their free time. Her notes certainly hadn't been quite so thought out in the past. Something to consider for next time? The learning had already begun.

Upon reaching her destination, the ghoul entered the forrest that constantly whispered and shifted. Almost immediately after she began looking around, something began following her. Imagining the "big ones" from Invictus' stealth trial, Levi did was seemed logical at the time: she ran.

The path got darker and darker, twigs rushing passed as Levi ran. All she could do was listen for the large footsteps of any critters that might be gaining on her. Nothing so far was heard; just the forrest. Then there was nothing.

Really- nothing. Had she stopped moving? She couldn't tell. Everything was just pitch as the inside of a barrel. AYE! Well, at least she could hear herself.

Whether or not they could see anything did not change the fact that Noland saw them. They arrived on time, and they arrived ready. This was already a good sign, and Noland pulled out a tiny little notebook - the first thing the two would see, actually, as the white pages suddenly glowed - and scribbled something in it.

"Very good, very good. I did not expect to see you both so soon." His voice was high pitched and strangely growly - he had eaten a foxfire just for the occasion. "You both receive two points each for your prompt attendance." Points? What did that mean?

Noland was still unseen, but the book floated in front of the two, until it snapped shut and darkness reigned once more.

A moment of silence, and then Levi heard a whisper right in her ear. "Now I think I'm going to give you names. Not real names, no no. That would be no fun! And we're going to have lots of fun today.. aren't we?"

The voice was in Shun's ear, now. "You, the boil in black. You will be the black ranger. And you won't be needing these, anymore." It was unclear as to what Noland meant by 'these'.. unless Shun attempted to summon his reaper weapons. He would come up empty.

"And you, little ghoul in shocking white, you will be the white ranger. Okay? Though I really think I should do something about this.."

Levi's tail tingled, and then went limp. Useless. Immobile.

And then, as if he'd been standing directly in front of them the whole time, Noland's expressionless white mask was visible. "Right then! Are we ready to play?"

At first, Shun didn't hear anything, but after awhile he was able to hear someone running in this direction. He tensed up, ready for a potential confrontation, but soon heard a rather familiar voice. It sounded like... Levi perhaps? He didn't focus on that for long as a different voice altogether could soon be heard. Turning towards where he heard the source, he saw a glowing notebook not too far off. While Noland spoke, he remained silent, unsure what was meant by these.. points he brought up.

He furrowed his brow as he continued to speak. Being unable to see much of anything, he was having a hard time deciphering what he was talking about. The whole nickname thing was... a bit odd as well. But he just went along with it regardless. For now at least.

Finally, when he was able to see the white mask of the ghost appear, he grimaced. It was a little unsettling for the face to appear RIGHT in front of them like that. Also... Play? He wasn't really here for games.

"I suppose, but what exactly is it that we're doing?" he asked quietly.

If her face could be seen, she was raising a brow to this floating talking notebook. Levi hadn't caught notice of Shun just yet as the scribbling of the floating stationary was going on.

The voice that seemed so close to her sent a chill up her spine. White...ranger? Like times before, her tail lost that life of its own it always seemed to have, hanging rather low and useless to her. Oh. This would be one of those times. A test of skill without her tail there to bounce her out of a slippery situation. The ghoul felt around for her tail and wrapped it like a boa around her neck so it would be less of an inconvenience in her way. There was another body there with her, but per the moment, Levi couldn't tell who/what it was. Eventually, she would take note of Shun, but not before-

ACK-! The big face/mask thing appeared out of the dark, greeting them with a solitary expression. Then Shun spoke up with a question and the tatzel's ears perked in familiarity. Shun- er- yeah. READY! A game with learning? Levi was thinking this would be a good time.

"Good!" The face did not move as the voice spoke. It just floated there. "How fantastic, I am so very excited!" There was no emotion in it's frozen face to go with his bubbly words. "And now, black and white ranger, you must do something before we begin. It's very simple, really. Very simple!"

The mask began to fade away, as it spoke one last time, explaining their next task.

"Find the light in the darkness, and keep it as your own."

And then Noland was gone, and they were completely blind. Again.

With nothing but a riddle to guide them.

And each other.

Ah. It was indeed Levi who was here with him. He wasn't too surprised really, having seen her at Invictus's stealth course as well. Shun didn't say anything right away, as he was busy listening to Noland's instructions. Find the light in the darkness. Interesting. Well, he supposed he could try and use his cellphone as a lightsource, but didn't pull that out just yet.

"Sounds simple enough," he commented flatly before trying to listen. to the area around him. He couldn't be certain if the tatzel was the only one that was nearby. Perhaps there was some mini in the area that could create its own light.. or something along those lines.

A light in'tha dark. With the most serious of expressions, the tatzel pondered this riddle of riddles. Well, don't know 'bout ya'll, Shun, but ain't seen nothin' light yet. Can't dang see maself. Really- there was just nothing again once Noland's face had faded.

Shun seemed to think this would be easy, so Levi inquired. Which way ya'thinkin' a goin'? Her ears twitched, trying to hear something, anything, that might lead to... something.

"Forward. Not like I can see where else," Shun replied as he began to walk forth, carefully. He was getting a feel for what he was stepping on. Different parts of the ground would both feel and sound differently as he walked around after all.

"Do you hear anything?" he asked quietly.
PostPosted: Fri Jun 15, 2012 4:28 pm

She took but a moment to hear without herself or Shun speaking. Silence. Uh... I hear ya but nothin' else.

Forward was easy enough. Walking forward was- wait. If yer walking' forward n' I'm walking' forward how we know which forward is really forward? Sure, her ears could direct her if Shun kept speaking, but getting off course of forward wasn't looking all that unlikely. Even the smallest detour in steps would lead to a larger gap. They'd be lost? She wanted assurance that they'd be able to stick together at least wherever they were going. 'Ere! Catch! The ghoul took her lifeless boa-tail, swinging it around like a lasso. Ya'got it? Reckon this way we'll still be goin' forward tha' same.

"I'm walking straight ahead of myself," Shun corrected, and he was planning on moving on his own, but then she was throwing something at him. He didn't know what since he couldn't see but then he was suddenly hit with something thick and furry. Grunting as it nearly knocked him over, he grabbed onto it. It must have been her tail.

"I suppose," he sighed while trying to feel around for the nearest tree.

There were many trees to feel. They all felt spongy, holey, and several were possibly hollow.

The ghoul knelt by what seemed like the tiniest incline on the ground. With one hand, she grazed up the length of what was causing this bulge in the ground. The feel of it was soft to the touch but strong. Found somethin' big. Trees? Her hands trailed around the outside, looking for anything of interest about this particular tree. Maybe she should try climbing it? That would have her detach from Shun. Think it's worth climbin'?

She sniffed at the air, still feeling up the tree. Anything in the air she might recognize? Hmmm....
