User ImageAs seemed to often be the case with the doe Give Up Forever she was searching for something, and as was very common the current search was for one black and white frog she'd dubbed Swallowed Light. As far as her more profound searching, she was taking a bit of a break. A lot had happened to her recently, finding her siblings, meeting a nice buck and becoming a mother. For the first time in her life she was content even happy. There was still this nagging feeling that there was more for her to discover, but it didn't seem quite so pressing to seek it out just then.

Give sighed as she looked down trying to spot some sign of Swall's passing. "This is ridiculous, I should just let him come back when he's ready. With my luck the silly thing will wander back with some more babies again. That might not be such a bad thing. I could always give them to the kids; I'm sure they'd like them." It took a while but Give realized she was talking to herself aloud, something she'd promised the mare that had met while pregnant she'd try to avoid.

Hopefully there wasn't anyone around to hear her this time....

It knew full well of its owner's deficiencies, and the twittering and wittering as it flitted from tree to tree now, leading him on a wild goose chase, was undoubtedly a punishment for some slight Flickering could not remember giving. He followed, always, pushing blindly into the blurry darkness, knowing not where...but it hardly mattered anyway. These occasional inconveniences were well worth putting up with in exchange for that melodious companionship. After all, Darkling well knew it could just fly off one day, and Flickering would never be the wiser where it had abandoned him to. No, even these cruel games were a kindness.

Ruminating thus, even as his ears pricked, picking out the syllables of some muttered conversation, his mind did not quite string them together quickly enough to avoid - walking straight into a fuzzy shape. Oh. Another Kin, he registered, blinking, from the ground. "I am very -" a cracked whisper. He coughed softly and tried again, "I am very sorry."

Somewhere distant, far overhead, a single pure note rang out to remind him the game was still on, then fell silent for this intermission.

Looking at the ground and distracted by her own muttering, Give registered the bird calls and the approach of another as simple background noise until all of a sudden something bumped into her. She scrambled back with a startled yelp and looked down at what proved to be a kimeti buck, who struggled to apologize.

"Oh dear, I... I'm sorry," Give apologized in return. "I was looking for my frog and ..." talking to myself... "not paying attention like I should. Are you ok?"

"Oh, yes, I am perfectly fine," he replied, climbing to his hooves, "it is unfortunately a common enough occurrence for me - I assure you it is entirely my fault. Are you alright, miss?"

Give grinned, if he wanted to take the blame she wasn't going to argue the point any further. "It seems we're both alright then," she replied. "You didn't happen to see a frog in your travels? He's rather unique black and white, the white around his mouth and head like he swallowed a firefly or something. I call him Swallowed Light. Swall wandering off and leading me into trouble is unfortuanately a common occurance for me."

He stood there, listening to her description with a pleasant smile. He was silent for a while after, but he was not combing his recollection for such a creature. Oh no. He did not quite like to tell those he met about his minor affliction - so rarely were they ever encountered again that it seemed silly to force upon them the vocalisations of concern that all too often invariably resulted. But it would seem churlish, wouldn't it, if he did not explain why he could not help in that regard?

"In this, too, I am sorry," his smile had turned apologetic, "but I have not. I miss many things I should see in my travels, I'm afraid. I can't - see very well."

Give grew hopeful at his silence thinking at first that he was trying to remember something that would help her in her search. So her face just fell as he began to apologize again, "Oh its ok..." she began to say before he'd finished. It took a moment for his explaination of why to register with her.

"Oh dear, I'm so sorry." she said finally. Give hated making others uncomfortable and the words just kept flowing out of her. "I didn't mean to bring up something uncomfortable. Of course you wouldn't notice a little frog unless he decided to make himself known. He's really good at hiding too..."

"Oh no, no, my lady," he said at once, and his voice grew stronger in his desire to convey his sentiment, "it is but a part of me, I know no more comfort than this, and so it is not at all a thing uncomfortable. Please, think nothing of it - I only regret that I cannot help more." Then he tilted his head and brightened a tad as the soft, reminding chirrups drifted from the leaves, "I am in a situation not unlike yours - I, too, am following a beloved companion. A songbird. It is not lost, it merely leads me on - a game, of sorts. But it may be amenable to ceasing play for search. I am not sure if it will heed me, but...Darkling?" and this, he called to the trees, "Have you sighted it? Might you lead us?" How much could a songbird understand? But to dancers in the dark, a beat remains a beat, and as the trilled song resumed, flitting further, Flickering smiled as if adream, and started step. "Perhaps. Would you be eyes for us, dear miss?"

Give relaxed and smiled enjoying his way of speaking and her ears twitched as they caught the chirrups. "A songbird?" she asked looking up into the branches trying to spot it. Her heart lifted at the possibility, if anything would be able to spot her frog a bird would. She too spoke to the branches. "Oh please if you can help, I would be so very greatful."
The chirrups turned to song and moved away. Give thought she saw some movement in the branches but it could have been the wind. "I'll do my best. Lets see where your friend leads us?" she asked gamely. She stepped forward to follow the song keeping close to the male so he wasn't wanding blind as it were... "By the way my names Give Up Forever."

He weaved meandering steps apace with the flitting song that drifted from the trees - halted as the doe gave her name, falling into more sedate trot, trance broken. He wasn't used to company, for a moment he had forgotten she was there.

"Give Up Forever," he mused, the hazy blue of his eyes dimming in thought, "a beautiful name. So much like a dream of the Swampmother's embrace," he smiled, a little wistfully, remembering the comforting darkness of his own dream, "I am Flickering."

Give smiled in happy understanding. With the exchange of names she felt like she was walking with something of a kindred spirit. "Flickering," she said the name softly sampling its fit to this buck with his markings like muted flames. "It's a pleasure to make your aquaintance. I wish it was under less awkward circumstances."

Somewhere ahead a black and white frog splashed happily in a small pool. He scrambled to a lone lilypad and contemplated the insects buzzing around to see which would make the best snack....

The song changed. All of a sudden, the soothing trip of trills broke off - then picked up again into a chittering of piping notes, now closer, now further, as if the singer were weaving back and forth in a looping hover.

"Ah. Have you found something, Darkling?" the songbird did not cease, and so he turned his head, smiling pleasantly at the dark, vague blur of a Kin (the head was where a small cluster of red rested to a side, flowers, he surmised; they were fragrant), "I cannot say if it has found your frog, but we shall find out soon enough."

Give was so much more aware of the buck walking beside her that she didn't notice the change in Darkling's song until he commented on it. She looked up and saw that the songbird did indeed seem to be hovering. "Oh yes, I believe something has been found."

An indignant croak revealed the presence of the frog. He'd just about narrowed his selection to one choice insect when the trilling bird arrived and startled frog and insects. He made his way toward the approaching kimeti expressing his annoyance.

Give tried not to laugh. "I'm sorry Swall but I was worried about you," she explained to the frog before turning to the songbird. "Thank you very much Darkling," and finally she turned to Flickering, "and thank you good sir for your assistance. The search has been successful. The frog you hear is indeed my Swallowed Light."

And indeed, as he peered at her hooves, he could just see the faintest blur of white.

"I am so glad," he smiled at her, as finally the brown songbird looped once more and fluttered down to perch upon his shoulder, silent for once, "we are very happy to have been of help, dear miss."
