The smell of parchment, ink and leather permeates a room filled to almost overflowing with tomes. The walls are shelved with books and all along the room are extra shelves set up to hold all the knowledge the castle has to offer in the form of ink on paper. Writing desks sit in random places and the bookcases make the room into an almost maze. many a new recruit has gotten lost among the books, only to be found the next day using some large tome as a pillow and shivering from the chilly air. As a result most Novice's are taken on a form of tour and informed that they should only go into sections they have permission to be in, which are sections close to the front of the library. The higher ranking you are the further into the library you are permitted. At the back of the library are forbidden texts, defended by a labyrinth of shelves and desks very few novices find this place. And those that do tend no to linger. For if they do it is rumored they will be left on the mountain to fend for themselves.
These dark tomes hold secrets and arcane knowledge that will corrupt those not trained and ready to hold their own against such persuasion. Only the highest ranking officials can look at these texts, and even they do so rarely and with good reason. These texts tend to grow more dust then others from lack of use. Some have never been opened in the castle, and some hopefully will never have a need to be.
But closer to the light and warmth of the lanterns of the front of the library are books for everything a Soldier, grunt, and novice could possibly need. Books on weapons and how to take care of them. Book on how to make weapons. Books on herb lore and animal lore. Books on how to ride a horse and best ways to train them. books on how to mend and make clothes and armor. books on how to cook and recopies. Books filled with legends of deed past Death Knights have done. Biographies of notable Death Knights, books on the history of the castle. The list goes on. If you need to learn about something this is the place to go.
