A Medieval Tale Once upon a time there was a dragon named Cornelius. He was a friendly dragon, but he was all alone in the world due to every other creature making some complaint about him at one time or another. His picture would always appear on wanted posters like this: Or like this: Forcing him to be hated all he met. He promised himself he would try one more time to be friends with people and if this failed he would go far away. However, what the future has in store is of great surprise to him.

Janis was dragging her latest kill to her house. She really did need to bring something to help. Her back was already killing her. She promised herself she'd kill smaller game next time. However she new this wasn't going to happen. She could get a good price for this buck she'd killed. Janis lived somewhat away from the rest of the village. Not because she was antisocial, but because it had worked out that way. She had, afterall, wanted this little plot she bought. It was a place she could grow food and raise chickens and run her own house like she wanted. She dreamed of this since she was little and with her Aunt's help had gotten it, despite being only just stepping into her twenties. She liked working with the land. Still it was hard and this was one of the few time she regreted it.

Fey of Silver Light ((Sorry. Internet troubles -.- I'll post when I can. :/ Im just going to jump in xD Hey, what period is this? Mideval? Moern?)) Janis was dragging her latest kill to her house. ((lol This was my first idea so Im rolling with it xD razz )) Walking along the outskirts of her field Cornelius wandered up to Janis's house a couple yards away. In his hand was a book and on his feet were worn out boots and a long brown cloak that covered his face. He was just a random traveler who had tired looking eyes and was dragging his feet in the same manner Janis was, except he carried nothing that was as big as Janis's dead buck. Although, he was the kind of person she nor anyone probably would have let on her property without good reason. He was not paying attention, however, and had "accidentally" stepped onto it without realizing it. "Is this the main road?" he asked no one in particular, "I'm looking for the nearest village."

Janis dropped the deer's leg, the one she'd been using to drag it all day. Briefly she hoped it didn't ruin the skin. Who knows maybe it would tenderize the meat. Ah, wishful thinking. She looked at the traveller who seemed to distracted to really pay attention to his surrounding. If he had, he could have seen that the small path he was on, only made by the feet of her and a few animals, was way to small and uneven to be considered a 'main road'. So Janis just stared at him, looking to see if he was serious. She stretched, lower back popping audibly. He looked like he was really serious. "I think that you need to pay more attetion where your going, sir." she said, not unkindly. "This small path leads up to my house. Your going to have to turn around and follow it back down. It runs right into the main road. Turn left and after about half a mile you will be in Dunsworth." she explained.

"Wait," the man thought aloud as his eyes opened more. "Did you say Dunsworth? If you did I can't go back there. They don't like me there. And if what you say is true I think I've been walking around in circles too. I'm looking for a place called Fenworth, but I suppose someone switched the signs or something." He fumbled around with his book and it dropped from his hands onto the ground. He bent over and picked it up.

Janis looked at him with her eyebrows raised in a questioning fashion. She sighed as he dropped his book. "No wonder your lost. With your head stuck it that book it's a wonder you know where your going. You probably glance that the sign that said 'Dunsworth' and thought it said 'Fensworth'. Only the first to letters are different afterall." she sighed. Janis really looked at the man. He looked tired, or at least his eyes did. She had this odd feeling that she'd seen him before but she wasn't sure. "Tell you what. Help me get this hung up in the shed. she indicated the deer. "And I'll draw you a map."

Cornelius brightened up and laughed, "I suppose I got them mixed up but I like the deal you've offered. Anyone would... I'll move this buck for you in no time." Cornelius handed Janis his book which read, Dragons and their Mating Rituals, before walking over to the buck and lifting it with a single hand by the scruff of it's neck. He stuffed that end under his arm and said, "If you can still use your other arm please lift up the rump for me so we can move this thing." In actually Cornelius could have lifted it all by himself, but he was using only a fifth of his strength.

Janis looked at the book title and did a double take. Why in the world was he reading this? She shook her head, putting it away for later thought. She did as he indicated, grunting at the weight. But it wasn't too much compared to earlier. Still... she would have prefered the other end. She directed him up the path but many yard past her house and the chicken coop. The entered a decidely large shed. The main space was empty save for a very large table, a variety of knives and lots of brown stains on the table's stop and in the middle of the floor. There was a rope hanging from the beams, connected to a lever system. Janis had him put it on the table. "I hope your not squimish," she remarked. "I've got to take care of him." She picked up a large saw like knife. "You can leave if you want. The house is unlocked."

"I think I'll stay..." Cornelius told Janis. "You're holding a dangerous knife and although you look experienced it's always good to have someone on hand to help keep the mess to a minimum." Cornelius licked his lips a little and could not help by look at the deer's fine neck. He decided he would do whatever it took to stay since the deer looked very tasty to him. Cornelius grabbed bowl he saw on the table and said, "I can catch all the blood for you so your room, er, house doesn't get any more dirty than it may already be." He offered.

Janis nodded. "Okay. Hold the bowl there," she said pointing and moving to his other side. "I'm afraid Some of this is still going to go in the floor." With that they worked together to behead the deer. It was gruesome and messy, but over rather quickly. It was wait for acess blood to drain that took awhile. While she did this she pulled the rope down and tied it's back legs securely. "Okay, help me pull him up." She grabbed the other end of the rope. Ans started to tug.

Cornelius put down the bowl on the table, came up behind her and grabbed the rope. He hardly grunted as he helped quickly pull the kill up towards the ceiling. "Do you catch these every day?" He asked Janis, "It must be hard work doing it alone."

Janis shook her head. "No. Not really. Only if I know it's going to be a hard winter, or in need of money. People in Dunsworth pay nicely for a good piece of deer meat." she stated. "So I sell almost all of them and dry the meat from the rest. Janis looked down at herself. For the most part, both of them were splatter with blood. "Ugh. We look like we'll been murdering people." she wrinkled her nose. Most of the time she didn't worry about this. She suddenly blushed. "Sorry... This is a fine way for me to treat a guest. I hope you didn't mind too much. I tend to get carried away when I'm working." she nodded apologeticly.

Cornelius looked at Janis and wiped some blood off of his chin with his hand. "I don't mind being treated this way. I'm used to it and you sound like you have a nice business." Cornelius smiled and held out his hand, "If you don't mind I think I'll be going so I don't cause you more trouble and I'll be needing my book back. I'm a rare book collector after all and I certainly can't do without the copy of that book I gave you. It's a first edition, yes."

Janis stared and grabbed him by the shoulder. She stared to drag him out and toward the house. Was he crazy or what? Wanting to move on while his clothes had blood on them and he didn't even know the way yet? If he did get there or anywhere else, people would be shocked by his appearance "You can have your book back after you are cleaned up. I don;t think You want my bloody hands on your book." It was safe in her bag outside. "I have a perfectly good house and extra clothes. I'm not about to let you just leave without some proper care. I haven't been away from people THAT long."

Cornelius barely listened to her as he was focused on only one goal. His eyes dimmed and became droopy again and he rambled off, "I really need that book back. It's important to me and I can't stay in your home. I'm not welcome in Dunsworth and definitely not around here. You'll be in trouble for harboring me I think if the people around here find you. I'm sure your house is nice, but I can clean myself up pretty well."
