Nise-e had been having a relatively uneventful morning. She had gotten up, scared Xander like a boss, and had found a nice place to eat her breakfast despite the protests of her friend. Today’s meal: strawberries, some daisies, and some dewy grass. Not a bad combination to start the day. Nise-e giggled lightly as her bangs flew into her face, a few stray leaves catching the morning sun and lighting her light blue eyes. Today had to be a good day. She certainly wanted it to be. Overhead Xander caught an updraft and glided overhead just above the tree tops, his glowing head ever watchful for anything that might come their way.
“Xander you silly hawk, nothing is going to come and get us this early in the morning,” she called out to him and grinned, her wings flapping as she bounced a few times on her hooves.
The blue hawk looked down at his mistress and sighed, shaking his head. Would she ever learn? There were always things out there that could hurt them, EAT them, kill them, and not even in that order per say. Nise-e was very innocent in that department. Sometimes he couldn’t help but worry about her. And he dared to never think of what would happen to her if he WASN’T there at all. If anything she would probably try to approach a kalona or, heaven forbid, a skinwalker and try to befriend them. She was too sweet for her own good. He circled a few more times before coming downwards and landing on her hindquarters.
“There are always dangerous things out in the wild here Nise-e. You can never be too careful,” he replied as he continued to watch the tree line.
“But most things can’t get us Xan, we can both fly if we need to. And for the record I’m pretty agile. They’d have to catch me,” Nise-e replied and smiled at him.
Xander sighed and shook his head, his feathers ruffling, “there are many things that can fly as well. Just because your agile doesn’t mean that they’re not.”
“But Xan—“ Nise-e paused and her ears immediately perked forward to listen.
Xander heard the rustling too. His head snapped to the right, something was there. Nise-e, to her credit, took a step backwards instead of forward, her head tilted in the same direction as his own. The bushes in front of the trees rustled and Xander immediately heard the sounds of feral growling.
“Cougar,” he muttered and Nise-e’s eyes brightened.
It was time for her to play. She liked playing. With a growl the cougar jumped out into the open, it’s pearly white pointed teeth glinting with saliva. It was hungry. And if they didn’t make a quick get away in the next few seconds they’d be its breakfast.
“Hey kitty kitty—“ Nise-e taunted taking to the sky and hovering just a few inches above the ground, “kitty want to play?” The large cat went to pounce and Nise-e quickly dodged, her white wings flapping quickly. Xander took to the sky as well, higher up so he could tell her which way to turn. He sighed exasperated, oh yeah; she would definitely be killed already if he wasn’t with her. With a flick of her tail Nise-e began to fly forward, knocking the cougar over with her left hoof.
“Tag kitty—“ she giggled and took off into the trees.
The cougar gave chase with a howl. And with Xander being her guide overhead, Nise-e twisted through the trees like it was no big deal, like she did every day. Which, she did do every day. She found I fun and filled the time. She knew these trees like the back of her hand. Another swipe of the cougars clawed paw brought her back out of her musings, indicating that it was still pretty close and wanted her as its meal. Nise-e grinned and sped up, pulling away from the predator by a number of feet. The cougar was fast, she’d give it that, but she was quicker. Dodge after dodge, twist after twist, Nise-e kept gaining distance.
“The cougar has stopped, I think its too tired to go on,” Xander called out.
“Woohoo! You’ll never catch me now kitty!” Nise-e turned her neck back in midflight to yell.
“Nise-e Watch—“ Xander began but was cut off as he watched the impending collision of horse and vines.
“What are you—“ she began to reply as she looked forward again, “uh oh…”
Nise-e collided with a group full of vines, some tripped her, and others tangled themselves in her hair and wings. The ones gracefully flying Nise-e became a jumbled mess of wings, vines, and hair. With an ‘oof’ Nise-e fell to the ground, sliding forward through the grass face first for a few seconds before coming to a stop in a small valley.
“Oww…” she mumbled as she twisted a bit to gain her footing and get her bearings.
Shaking her head Nise-e opened her eyes, only to come face to face with a pair of chocolate brown hooves with some very pretty patterns. Nise-e tilted her head to the side in curiousness as she followed the hooves upwards towards a pretty pair of wings attached to another mare. She blinked somewhat dumbly before smiling sheepishly.
“Hi.”
Xander his hid his head in his wing. His mistress was such a clutz…

Cataclysm had watched the whole attack from her vantage among the trees. Actually, Cataclysm had seen the cougar hunting in the forest nearly half an hour ago, but new avoidance was the best protection. As strong as she was; a full-grown hungry mountain lion was a formidable foe - Cataclysm and her family didn't view avoidance as cowardice; just another great advantage of having wings: outsmart your foes by flying where they can't catch you.
And it was a smart move, as just some minutes later Cataclysm heard the cry of the hunting beast and curiosity got the better of her. She watched the lion chasing a pretty blue flutter, and was trying to calculate to calculate the best way to intervene. However, much to her surprised, the nimble creature didn't seem to need her help at all. Impressed, Cata watched at the bug-winged lady darted in and out through the forest, quickly losing the hungry puma in her dust. Though, just as Cataclysm was beginning to get impressed, the mare began to falter, and was soon hopefully tangled up the twisting vines of the forest's canopy.
She landed on a nearby branch and watched her, an eyebrow arched in judgement. "Hello," she purred lowly when the mare finally realized she was there. "My my, what happened here?" she asked, with a shake of her head.

Nise-e twisted a bit trying to get herself loose from her confines. This was rather embarrassing and became even more so when, in her movement, she became even more entangled than she already was. She gave a huff of annoyance and her wings flickered in agitation. This wasn’t what she had in mind for today. Here she was winning an epic game of cat and mouse, almost literally, with a cougar, before she allowed herself to look back and lose sight of her surroundings. Xander was going to have a field day giving her another one of his lessons. A lesson filled with chiding a small child, which she was not thank you very much, a how she needed to watch where she was going.
She blinked owlishly as she heard the pretty mare speak. The tone soft, but firm enough to catch her attention that she was most certainly a clutz in this department. But it wasn’t her fault! Nise-e couldn’t help it if her attention was pulled elsewhere! She didn’t get tangled up in vines every day! She heard Xander snort hawkishly, no pun intended, as if hearing her inner thoughts. She shot her hawk familiar a small glare with her lightly colored eyes before turning her attention back to their company.
“Umm, I was sorta playing cat and mouse with a silly cougar this morning and I got stuck once I lost him,” she began to explain, “Could you…umm…help me down please? Xander! I can hear you laughing up there!”
With a flicker of his lightly glowing blue feathers Xander came into full view with a look of you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me on his face. Landing on a branch right next to the two mares he blinked at her.
“I’m finding small humor in the fact that you, Nise-e, are stuck in a patch full of vines for not paying attention where you’re going and I am not. How many times have I told you to watch your surroundings? You’re still such a young mare. You still have much to learn about the art of flying.”
Nise-e pinned her ears back in annoyance at his comments, “I’m not THAT bad of a flyer you know…”
“Right, and I’m not a glowing blue hawk,” he replied to her retort and fluffed his wings before gazing upon the chocolate mare.
“Greetings, my name is Xander. And this,” his wing pointed to Nise-e, “is my young partner Nise-e. Pleasure to meet your acquaintance.”

Cataclysm couldn't help but roll her eyes just a bit when Nise-e asked her to help her down. Though she didn't acknowledge it, Cataclysm was somewhat impressed by her aerial acrobatics, even if she did get ahead of herself in the vines. The point was, it saved her life. The darker mare took a hold of one of the vines with her teeth and began to pull and shake, trying to free the flutter in its grasp.
She as distracted momentarily, however, with the arrival of the ice blue hawk who seemed rather eloquent. Her family often spoke with the hawks and such around their mountain, but none seemed as well spoken as this one. She smiled ruefully. "Very nice to meet you Xander," she said, dropping the vine to look at him. "And Nise-e. My name is Cataclysm."

“Cataclysm,” Nise-e spoke out loud, allowing the name to roll over her tongue a few times.
That was certainly an interesting name. It wasn’t one she had come across too many times, well, none really, since she left her parents protective dwellings about a month or so ago. In fact, and Nise-e was rather ashamed to admit it, she hadn’t met anyone in her short travels in that span of time. It was rather depressing really. Nise-e loved meeting new people and making new friends. That was how she came across Xander originally. Well, Xander rather found her, not the other way around. But regardless, that wasn’t the point!
“I like your name, its very powerful sounding,” she smiled innocently at the older mare and let out a happy noise as she wiggled her wings and the vines began to loosen and let her go, immediately allowing herself to float above the ground again with ease.
“The pleasure is mine,” Xander replied in kind and took flight for a moment, gripping a few of the last remaining vines upon Nise-e’s wings within in beak and throwing them down upon the ground.
Landing upon the top of his partners head he regarded Cataclysm once more, curiosity upon his face, “pardon the question, but are you from around here? I don’t think I have seen someone such as yourself around this part of the forest as of late.”

"Thank you," Cataclysm said with a nod to the flutter. "It is strong, I come from a strong family," she said with a puff of pride. At the hawk's question she pointed to a mountain range in the distance, "Indeed, my herd is from the mountains, I'm the Alpha-in-Waiting," she said with a definitive nod.
"Nice wingwork there," she said to Nise, "Well, except the landing. Especially for a bug-wing."

Xander gave a definitive nod of his head, “It is a pleasure to meet someone such as yourself Ms. Cataclysm.”
He looked down at Nise-e and gave her a stern look, “manners Mistress.”
Nise-e, for her part, was quite taken with the mare. Even more so when she spoke of the lands in the sky. The stories she only ever heard from her mother growing up. And was definitely sold when Cataclysm said that she was in alpha in waiting for those lands. It was so crazy! And awesome! And even more crazy and awesome in the same sentence! So much so that Nise-e could barely contain herself and her childish excitement! It wasn’t every day that someone so important came across in her life, or Xander’s for that matter, and she wasn’t about to let that opportunity pass itself by. That just wouldn’t be right! Nope, nope, nope! Not happening! Not now and not ever! Never ever never!
“I’ve heard so many stories about the place you call home!” Nise-e chirped with a smile and a bounce in her step.
“Momma used to tell me and my sisters bed time stories in the grotto of the safe haven for flying soquili such as myself and others! While she never lived there herself she knew the stories from her own momma. I’ve always wanted to see if the stories were true! Apparently they are which is super special awesome amazingness!”
Her wings fluttered excitedly, “sorry for the mess of a landing back there though! Sometimes I lose track of where I’m at.” She smiled sheepishly while looking down at the remaining few pieces of vines on the forest floor.
She could hear Xander sigh and she shook her head, causing him to fall off and flutter erratically for a moment before coming to sit on a branch right above the two mare’s heads.
“I don’t know if sometimes is the right work Mistress.”
The hawk gave her a pointed look at Nise-e stuck her tongue out at him impishly.
“I can’t help it that I’m so excitable sometimes!”
Nise-e was not to be deterred though, “I love flying though. It’s so much fun! Full of adrenaline and pure freedom. There’s nothing else quite like it.”
She looked over at Xander thoughtfully, “and it’s even more fun when you have friends that can fly with you too!”
Xander smiled softly in his own hawkish fashion and looked to Cataclysm thoughtfully, “speaking of the mountain wind herd, if memory serves it’s the Thunderbird herd correct? I’m surprised that you’re so far down the mountain. Is something happening that requires your attention?”
Nise-e looked at Cataclysm thoughtfully. Problems? The only problem she had was not finding her favorite berries in the morning.
