Feel free to post about and discuss esoteric holidays here. Have a favorite little-known holiday? Tell us about it, do you actually celebrate it? How?

Today, May 23, is World Turtle Day. It was started to encourage people to become more aware of turtles/tortoises and to help them thrive.
I gave my three turtles extra shrimp as a special treat, they loved it and nearly bit my fingers in their excitement. d: I also dressed my avatar for it, I gave her a turtle buddy and a pond background. (Picture removed)
Matasoga
Matasoga approves of Turtle Day. Let's party.
Saber Talawyrm
Eee! That's so cute! ^_^
I know you've already seen this picture Josh but for everyone else, here is the tortoise I recently was able to pet at my oldest son's school. It was very tame and just sat there despite all the yelling kids poking at it, including one little girl who poked it right in the face. Poor tortoise. :/ He is young yet (I don't remember how old the guy said it was) and not even close to full size.

In Ireland the 26th of May is National Fish and Chips Day! smilies/icon_heart.gif Loads of chippers do deals and stuff smilies/icon_smile.gif Mmmm *Rubs stomach*
Saber Talawyrm
Ooh that sounds like a very tasty holiday. smilies/icon_3nodding.gif
May 25 is Wear the Lilac Day to raise awareness of Alzheimer's.
Lady-Sanctuary
Oh brilliant! ^-^ I thought I'd missed it
Saber Talawyrm
Nope, not yet. I plan on wearing my lilac colored shirt as long as it's warm enough for it. It's a tank top so if it's too cold out I won't be able to wear it. I'll at least wear lilac on my avi though.
Lady-Sanctuary
As will I smilies/icon_smile.gif And have to dig out my lilac clothes smilies/icon_smile.gif

Saber Talawyrm
I found out it's supposed to be really warm tomorrow so I should be able to wear my lilac colored shirt. Yay! It's a little tank top but it's the only thing I have in that particular shade of purple.
Lady-Sanctuary
And my avatar is going lilac for the day! smilies/icon_smile.gif As am I, as in I'll put on my one lilac top smilies/icon_razz.gif
Saber Talawyrm
Me too, but I'm not going to change my avatar until I've been to bed. It isn't tomorrow until I've gotten some sleep. d:
Lady-Sanctuary
That is a very good way of olooking at it. Now sleep for a long time smilies/icon_razz.gif
Saber Talawyrm
Heh, well I've slept though not for very long. ^^;

Tut tut... You really should sleep more! Gaia is bad for you!
Saber Talawyrm
It's not -really- Gaia that keeps me awake. ^//^ Gaia is just where I post while I'm awake. ^^;
Lady-Sanctuary
Hmmm... Okay smilies/icon_razz.gif Get more sleep?
Saber Talawyrm
I try... d:
Saber Talawyrm I don't know if this is quite the proper place for this but this month is LGBT Pride Month here in the states. I found this website that has some free gay pride posters you can download and print off.

Lady-Sanctuary
That's really cute ^-^ We have no LGBT Month here smilies/icon_sad.gif I think we have a week sometime in the summer?
Saber Talawyrm
I don't think it's been around all that long here. The LGBT community shouldn't have to go out of their way to show their pride though. If people would just get over their ridiculous homophobic notions, it wouldn't be necessary. Sorry if that comes off funny, I've just woken up and my brain is still fuzzy. I mean it in the best way possible though. ^^;;
Lady-Sanctuary
No, no I do agree quite a lot! But I do feel on some level that pride stuff helps the people who are closeted see that it's okay as much as the homophobes see it's okay. I don't know... it's all very complicated but I for one would prefer to just be accepted off the bat than have to create a huge show and dance because I'm not.

Saber Talawyrm
That is how it should be. It's really too bad that it's not. :/
Matasoga
I think that what we're all trying to say is the sentiment that I've said before. It would be best to see gay pride events disappear because they are only necessary because of a society that perpetuates the idea of gay shame. If gay pride events were no longer there it would mean that gay shame was no longer a strong force in modern society. Of course the idea that one is deficient or that there is something wrong with gays must disappear first. It won't go away just because gay pride has, so make no mistake: I am not advocating that gay pride be done away with in the hopes of making a more acceptable society, and I'm sure that neither of you are, either. It doesn't work like that, as we all well know.
Saber Talawyrm
Exactly. Why weren't you online earlier when I was half asleep and trying to say that? d:

Matasoga
Funny you should ask. I was actually. I just didn't get to it before I had to go. It was a busy afternoon, and I was damned tired, myself.
Saber Talawyrm
Aw. Well you've said it now anyhow, it's like you read my mind. You certainly put it better than I could have. smilies/icon_3nodding.gif
Lady-Sanctuary
That's kind of the way I feel yeah smilies/icon_razz.gif You're just more articulate smilies/icon_razz.gif
Saber Talawyrm
National Chocolate Chip Day is coming up on August 4th. I think I'll finally get around to making my cookies. d:
I think there should be a National Daydream Day, I'd be a pro at celebrating that one.

mourn_of_blades
That would be an awesome day. I couldn't tell you how many times I've caught myself standing around and staring into empty space at work lately... smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif
Saber Talawyrm
Wouldn't it though? I'm nearly constantly in the midst of some daydream or other it seems. Anytime I have a quiet moment the wheels in my head start to turn, especially when I'm driving.
mourn_of_blades
I'm exactly the same way. I'm just glad I can process sights and sound at the same time as my mind runs amok; driving would be impossible otherwise. smilies/icon_lol.gif Registering numbers makes it pose a bit of a problem though.
Saber Talawyrm
Me too, I register the other cars around me and things like animals running into the road but remembering how far I've driven or where I was supposed to turn is where I get hung up. As if my sense of direction wasn't bad enough. d:

Lucky me, I don't have that problem. I get wherever I need to go easily enough. I just find at random intervals -either en route or after arriving at my destination- that I don't remember reaching the current position. Or, to a lesser degree, sometimes I just don't remember passing certain areas.
Matasoga
What sorts of things do you daydream about? Is it all murder and mayhem, or do you ever catch yourself in softer moments, as well?
mourn_of_blades
A bit of anything and everything. Without anything specific to guide them, my thoughts randomly wander from one thing to the next. Oftentimes murder and mayhem, yes. Then on to something else, then they'll eventually find their way back to wreaking some form of havoc, and so on and so forth. One day at my former job, while trying to concentrate on making boxes my thoughts somehow led me to realizing how much fun it could be to walk through a heavy crowd while singing Voltaire's "Cannibal Buffet". I couldn't retrace that line of thought to save my life. :

It's the first, and only, Wi-Fi day. So happy Wi-Fi day! d:
Saber Talawyrm I meant to post this earlier but spaced it since I was busy posting everywhere but today is National High Five Day in the US.
Necrofade
Though I personally don't celebrate this holiday, I've a few friends who do. So for them i'll through out a happy 4/20 day smilies/icon_xd.gif
Learned a few facts about people's who's birthday's were today, so learned something new today!
Saber Talawyrm
Heh, I don't celebrate it either but I had a lot of friends in high school who did. d:

National Chocolate Covered Cashews Day April 21st, 2012 Trust us. There's pretty much a holiday for every kind of chocolate covered nut known to man. And from what we can tell, chocolate covered cashews aren't any better than the rest. But they are more expensive than almonds or peanuts, so if you have expensive taste, today is your day.
-laughs- What strange things you can find on the internet.

Matasoga I like the idea of today being National Surprise Drug Test Day.
Saber Talawyrm @Nana- I like chocolate covered just about anything. d: I've never had chocolate covered cashews though.
@Josh- I thought that was pretty funny when I saw it yesterday. I don't remember where I saw it though.

Plumber's Day April 25th, 2012 Anyone who's ever tried to repair a toilet on their own knows the value of a good plumber. As in, a plumber costs less than replacing a water damaged bathroom floor, buying a new pair of shoes, and springing for the family to spend the weekend in a motel.
That and Administrative Professional's Day. Which I was one earlier this month, so I'm going to celebrate in my head! <3
Saber Talawyrm
Ha! Plumbers are wonderful. I'm still so glad that when the toilet went out a little over a year ago that the neighbor had a plumber friend. The landlord was so bad that none of the plumbers in the phone book were even willing to come out and look at it without being paid in full and up front.

I found that a good pipe snake (which we have 2 of around the house) and an access to the main sewer line fixes just about any problem there is. I always hated having a landlord. My home, vehicles, and everything here is all paid for, thank goodness.
Necrofade
Technically this was yesterday now, but I haven't gone to bed yet, so it's still today for me.
Happy Cinco de Mayo.
Oh hey, just realized, they're celebrating that at the cabaret tonight....I gotta find my pennies smilies/icon_twisted.gif

No Diet Day May 6th, 2012
So bathing suit season is fast approaching, and to prepare you've thrown yourself into your usual pre-summer dieting frenzy. Depending how far along you are, you might be daydreaming about cupcakes or drinking hot water with lemon and calling it 'lunch.' Well it's time to put an end to all this stress --at least for today --and indulge your cravings. Have some pizza for lunch instead. You remember pizza, don't you? Chase it down with a few cookies and a milkshake. Trust us, you'll thank us tomorrow' when you're back to coconut water and carrot sticks.

Lol. That is me every day. Not to brag, but I eat all I want without gaining weight.

That makes two of us, then. smilies/icon_3nodding.gif Though admittedly, I don't eat a whole lot.

Apparently not much is grooving today. This is all I've got:

National Coconut Cream Pie Day May 8th, 2012
You know those cream pies used in old timey movies and comedy routines that are smashed in someone's face? Yeah those are usually made from shaving cream and not actual pies. Why? Because something like coconut cream pie is just too delicious to waste. Though if you really want to smash your face into one, that would be a good way to make sure you don't have to share your tasty pie with anyone else
