The dock was quiet, calm. Waves splashing up against the wood, seagulls circling overhead while they scavenged for scraps of anything edible, ducks trailing ducklings along the surface as they went about their daily business. Everything seemed at peace, or at least as peaceful as the incessant 'CAWWW CAWWWW CAWWW CAWWW' overhead could be.
Something was moving beneath the water towards the dock though, bright blue against the blue-green tinge of the water. When it reached its destination, the blue and orange-tipped noodle leapt from the water onto the dock, gracefully landing on all fours with a practiced precision. Holding a thick rope carefully in his clenched teeth, he shook off any water that clung to his scales or fur.
Turning his attention to the water again, Cyprinus pulled up the small net that was attached to the rope he had been carrying, dropping it onto the dock beside him, a few handfuls of freshly killed salmon trapped within it. Looking over his catch, he spoke softly to the dead fish as if they were children. "I am so glad we had a chance to talk today, but I'm very sorry to say that I have to make you into food now. But do not fret! You will become the most delicious meal anyone could have made out of you..."

Dementia walked along the beach quite at peace. Her horns glistened like pearls in the sun. The seagulls were plentiful flying around above her. Occasionally one would dive bomb to the sand, land clumsily, steal a few pieces of bread from some noodles having a picnic, then dash off again into the sky. She laughed as she watched one fall head over heals in attempt to grab a sandwich.
About a dozen yards away, there was a long dock. Further into the shore it held little shops. There was a restaurant, a coffee shop, and a few stores that just held bobbles and trinkets for people on vacation to buy souvenirs to take home. She kept on walking down the beach. The closer she got to the dock the more noodles there were. She did not mind being near so many people, but she had to admit it did make her a little nervous, especially with all the little kits running around. They frightened her more then adults with their excited screaming and shouting. She jumped and let out a little scream when a rouge beach ball bounced off her head. She took off towards the dock. It was a nice day so the dock was pretty empty. Everyone wanted to be in the ocean.
Except for me… she thought. Deep water always made her nervous. Something would happen to her down there, something she couldn’t explain. She would black out and not remember anything when she woke up again on shore. Shaking her head she cleared her negative thoughts and walked down the dock to where it was less crowded. The only noodles this far down were the older noodles who sat around fishing all day. It surprised her to see a young noodle at the very end of the boardwalk. As she walked closer she could he was talking to his catch of dead fish. She stopped when she was a few yards away from him and watched.

Cyprinus looked over his catch, wondering to himself how exactly he should prepare the delicious morsels. Plain nigiri, small rolls, maybe some Rainbow Rolls with the fish he had caught yesterday? Nono, he wouldn't serve up day-old fish, those would probably be his own food instead; he had standards after all. He grabbed the cinched end of the net in his mouth, and happily trotted back along the dock towards the shore as he hummed a song that a friend had introduced him to, a little bounce in his steps as he went along. "Hmm-hmm, hmm-hmm, hm hm hm hm hmm-hmm~"
He nearly ran right into Dementia, almost completely oblivious to anything else going on around him, but managed to notice the out-of-place colors in front of him just in time. Stopping a few feet short of bowling her over, he stared wide-eyed at the noodle before him, having never seen a kirin before, much less an aquatic kirin. The net with the salmon fell to the dock, completely forgotten as he took in her colors, unsure of what to do or what to say or even what sort of meal he could make out of her delectable features. Those scales, and that fur, and those fins, and the horns! Would the dragon scales make for better Dragon Rolls? Finally, he was able to utter one line amongst his own thoughts, as he stood there in awe of the delicious noodle in front of him. "Soo prettyyy..."

She took a little step closer to get a better look at his catch. Her mouth watered. They looked so good, and they weren’t even cooked yet! Mmm…deep fried fish sticks. She quickly caught herself and looked around to make sure no one had seen her almost drool on herself. It was very un-lady like to eat things off a stick, much less deep fried! Shaking her head to clear it she notices him humming to himself as he picked up his catch. It was a funny little tune, it sounded kind of familiar. But trying to remember started bringing on her usual fear of blacking out so she stopped. Dementia widened her eyes when the Noodle almost ran straight into her. How dare he, she thought indignantly. She surveyed him with a hint of disdain as he gawked at her. Despite his obvious impaired vision, now that she looked at him he was rather…cute. She had never seen a fish with such bright orange fins before and his eyes matched perfectly. They’re like…tangerines! she smiled warmly at him. His collar was so cool with bubbles floating across it. She was afraid if he moved too much they might pop. Looking back in his eyes she noticed there was something…a little off about his gaze. Half of him looked at her with a kind of admiration. The other half had an unnerving crazed look, like it was considering cooking her up and eating her. She took a step back and flicked her tail in an agitated way. Dementia was about to say something when he finally spoke. She blushed at his comment, momentarily ignoring his hungry gaze. "Why thank you sir." She offered him her hoof, "I don’t believe we have met before. My name is Dementia Sakana. What do people call you?"

He had it! He could use the scales to make a real dragon roll, with the fins and horns for decoration, and use the salmon he had just caught to finish it all off! Cyprinus was about to share this revelation with the kirin when she responded, and he looked down at the offered hoof in confusion for a moment. He had completely forgotten about the hooves! What could they be used for?! The possibilities! But wait, she had asked him a question...his name? How was it that noodles still did not know who he was? He was only the greatest chef to ever carve fish into art after all! Yet...saying that would be too arrogant, and he wouldn't have any of that. So instead he resigned to cautiously taking the offered hoof with his paw and shaking it with a grin. "Most call me Cyprinus. It is a pleasure to meet you, your...deliciousness..."
Cyprinus had stopped shaking her hoof, eyes fixed on the fur on her foreleg. It was so soft, surprisingly so! He moved his other paw slowly, not out of hesitation but awe, to join the first in order to lightly run it along the blue fur. He was completely oblivious to any social boundary he was crossing as he savored the smooth texture, and any thought of turning the kirin into a new dish, or even his fresh catch of salmon, were forgotten for the time.

She watched as the male Noodle slowly took her hoof in greeting. The way he looked at her…no…could it be that, he had never met a kirin before? But she brushed the thought from her mind when he finally introduced himself. ”Cyprinus,” Dementia repeated, listening to the way it sounded. ”It’s nice to meet you as well sir.” She cocked an eyebrow when he called her…what was the word? Deliciousness? Hm… she thought, That doesn’t sound anywhere close to Dementia…oh well. Maybe he had misheard her. People did that quite a bit for some reason. She would introduce herself but they always got her name wrong. They would call her ‘crazy’ or ‘insane’ instead. Those didn’t even sound like real names.
She shook her head and focused back on reality to see the Noodle, Cyprinus, running his paw along the fur on her forearm. He gazed at it intently, as if it was some kind of rare silk. ”Um…aha…yes.” Flustered, Dementia tossed her hair out of her face. She slowly retracted her hoof and smoothed the fur flat again. ”So…uh…what are you doing out on this fine day? I see you caught some yummy looking fish there. What do you plan to do with them?” She eyed him carefully. He seemed like a nice decent Noodle. But like her mother had told her before…before she left…It’s the nice ones you have to watch out for. Her hair had fallen back in her face and she looked at him through her bangs with emerald eyes. His orange eyes were still on her, taking in her every detail, studying her. She flicked her tail again, and looked around. There was still a lot of people around, if she screamed someone would help. She turned back to intently watch him, just as he watched her.

Upon hearing his own name repeated back, Cyprinus looked up from his attention to her fur, grinning back at the kirin and nodding. It was nice of her to meet him, how would he have come across this delicious-looking Noodle otherwise? There was always the chance that she would stop by his restaurant of course, which might have been even better because his kitchen--the fur was gone. He came to his senses once more, looking down to notice that she had somehow slipped it from his grasp while he was studying it. And he still didn't know what he could prepare out of the Noodle before him, all these distractions from his work were getting frustrating! Not only that, but the questions, all of these questions! Sometimes being a masterful chef such as himself was such a burden, honestly these Noodles just didn't seem to understand at all...
Sighing inwardly, he tried to regain his composure and forget about how he could serve up this fine example before him, since it simply wasn't in the cards, apparently. He looks down at the netted salmon at his feet, ignoring their attempts to draw him into yet another conversation, and responded to the kirin instead as he looked back up at her once more. "Oh, these guys? Yes, I do hope they will be yummy, it was quite fun catching them! As for what I will make them into...I haven't quite decided yet, probably something simple since I didn't catch any other fish today." He nods to himself, wondering if he could try making anything new for himself with the fish from yesterday. Always trying new things, that was key! Grinning, Cyprinus adds a suggestion. "I...have a restaurant nearby if you'd care to join me, I would absolutely love to experiment on you!"

She sat listening politely while he explained what he would do with this delicious looking fishes. ”That sounds simply divine.” She said, even though he hadn’t really answered her question. Some of the fish were still flopping around. Their little screams for help were very distracting. Turning back to Cyprinus, Dementia asks, ”Um…Cyprinus…do fish talk to you as well?” She kind of regretted asking that question as soon as it left her mouth. It would just give one more Noodle a reason to think she was crazy. Of course fish couldn’t talk, they were fish! Except for dolphins obviously, she thought to herself. They are incredibly intelligent creatures…In fact I can’t remember the last time I spoke to a dolphin.”
Lost in thought she started day dreaming until she realized he had started speaking again. ”You own a restaurant!” Dementia jumped up, excited. ”I would love to join you!” She stopped again when he said he’d love to experiment on her. That’s…a weird thing to say to someone…was he going to try and cook her? She looked again and still noticed that faint hungry look in his eyes. But it was much less dominant then before. Stop over reacting , she told herself firmly. He just means that he’s going to give you new recipes to try. Shaking her head to clear it, Dementia stood up calmly. ”Yes, I would love to accompany you to your restaurant,” she said in a more lady like tone.

Looking down at the salmon again, Cyprinus notices a couple of them still alive and screaming for help, though mostly drowned out by the others attempts to chat him up. How reckless of him to miss those, but they were in the net and he'd have to get it open and kill them and that would probably make all of the others talk even more. Maybe it would be better until he had them at the restaurant, then he could properly deal with them. His gaze shoots back up to Dementia's when she asked about talking fish. "Well...yeah, but it's not like they have anything interesting to say for the most part. Though it does get frustrating when I'm hunting some fish and they think they remember me and it gets a little awkward until I catch them." He pantomimes a fish in a rather silly manner, waving his paws around like some disjointed fins. "Cyp? What are you doing? Wait, noooooooo!" Ending his fish imitation, he grins widely, shaking his head a little bit. "Silly fish."
His ears perk up when she accepts his offer to join him at his restaurant, and he goes wide-eyed at the prospect of having a new customer, dancing around on the wet wood of the dock for a moment in excitement. "Then follow me scrumptious one, I assure you my culinary skills are to die for!" He quickly bends down to grab the rope with his teeth, and then takes off past Dementia as he runs down the dock towards the shore, momentarily oblivious of the kirin in his enthusiasm, the net snapping along behind him once the slack in the line runs out.

Dementia giggled as he acted out talking to a fish. She stood to follow, grinning foolishly at his obvious excitement. But as she started forward one of her legs got tangled up in his net and she tripped to the edge of the dock. Try as she might she could not get a good grip on the slippery wood and her hooves were not helping. In one last desperate attempt to stay dry she shouted at the blue and orange Noodle’s retreating back.
"CYPRINUS!" But it was too late and she disappeared into the deep murky ocean with a quiet splash. Panicking, she thrashed around violently to get back to the surface to no avail. Dementia took a deep breath and choked as she inhaled water. Stop freaking out! she ordered herself, You are an aquatic after all, you have gills. She took another, slower, more controlled breath. As soon as she got used to breathing in water she panicked again as she realized she was in deep water. She could feel the tug of her insanity. She had held it in check for so long that she had actually started to forget about it. "No…NO!" she tried to yell, but it was no use as all that came out of her mouth were bubbles. Her consciousness slowly started to fade and the edges of her vision turned black. Some other force was taking control. It spun a beautiful canvas in her mind of a large pearly undersea castle. Dolphins would wait for her command and all the riches of the ocean would be hers. She smiled faintly at the thought of being queen before her world went completely black.

Cyprinus happily raced down the dock with his net full of fish trailing behind them, the salmon still trying to lure him into conversation, probably in order to distract him so he didn't turn them into something delicious. Exactly what he expected from those sly little morsels. He still had no idea what to make out of them though, and with a new customer he would have to whip up something especially nice! Maybe he could use the dragon scales for a better dragon roll? He grinned, he was sure his new friend would appreciate his attempt!
He skidded to a halt when he heard Dementia call out his name, had she gotten lost? He thought the path from the end of the dock to the shore was fairly easy to navigate, though he himself had gotten lost the first time as well. She was in luck though, he happened to be an expert dock-navigator!
Turning back towards the sea, he stared blankly at the dock. He could have sworn he had heard his name called out. Had the savory looking kirin been real? The salmon were trying to tell him that she was, but perhaps this was all part of their trickery! He looked down at the net to tell them off for their deceit when he noticed that the water next to the dock was freshly agitated, as if something fell in. Maybe she was real, and had just decided to go for a swim? But...did she not want to go to his restaurant after all? The thought saddened him a little, a customer was a rarity, and he was so excited for the opportunity.
Shaking his head, he thought perhaps it was best to ask her himself, if she was actually real, of course. Dropping the net of annoying salmon, he bounds over to the dock where the ripples had been, peering down into the water for a moment before jumping in. Well, she was probably real at least, since he could see her floating in the water. "You know, if you wanted to go swimming instead of coming to my restaurant, you could have just said so." There was a bit of annoyance in his tone, as well as a lot of bubbles, but he couldn't help it. She wasn't being very nice leading him on like that. He continued staring at her, waiting for a response, before noticing that she didn't seem awake.
Well that was new. He hadn't seen a Noodle fall asleep in the water before, even he didn't do that. Still, she would catch a cold if she stayed, especially at the rate she was sinking into the water. Swimming around behind and above her, he grabbed her green collar for a moment, before thinking better of the idea and carefully taking her scruff in his teeth so as not to choke the seemingly-real Noodle. He slowly made his way towards the shore, pulling her along underneath him, and supporting her weight with one paw once he reached the beach in order to drag her onto the sands. Releasing his hold on her, he sat patiently on the warm sand, waiting for her to wake up and explain her odd, if not slightly rude behavior.

When Dementia woke, she was laying on the beach. She sat up slowly, shivering in the slight breeze. Her hair was soaking wet, plastered against her face in cold clumps. What in the world happened to me? she thought. Her brain was as empty as her eyes seemed as she looked vacantly around her. The beach was familiar but she couldn’t remember how she got there. It was as if someone had erased her memory of the past few minutes. The one thing she did remember that she was important. She was a queen. Queen of the Ocean. Standing, she shook herself at a lame attempt of getting dry. I must keep my composure intact, she told herself calmly. But then she panicked when she thought, Someone must have kidnapped me! Oh no…what if they’re trying to over throw my reign?! I must get back home to protect my people. She was just about to run straight into the ocean when a movement caught her attention. Sitting next to here was a blue Noodle with bright orange fins. Narrowing her emerald eyes she marched toward him. He must have been the evil kidnapper who had stolen her away from her beautiful underwater castle.
"You there!" She said, in a rather rude tone, "Where have you taken me? Why did you take me away from my home? Are you involved in some plot to take me away from my rightful place on the throne?" She narrowed her eyes even more and came closer so she was only a few inches away from his face. "Or perhaps have you taken me here to kill me?" she whispered dangerously. Frustrated with herself for losing her temper she sat down hard on the sand and flicked her wet tail at him. But that was one thing she liked about herself. She wasn’t one of those la-de-da queens who ordered everyone around her to do her bidding just so she could sit on her rear end and not do squat. No, Queen Sakana could take care of herself.
"Well?" she said, pushing wet hair from her face. "Are you just going to sit there and gawk at me like a fool, or are you going to take me home? Or kill me, or whatever you're thinking up there in your fishy brain." Dementia looked rather regal sitting there in the sand, despite looking half drowned. She thought of her people, (who were really just a few random dolphins and a lost school of fish), they must be worried about their queen. Then she had another thought. What if she had almost been kidnapped and this Noodle next to her was not her kidnapper, but some loyal citizen that had come to her aid?
Dementia glanced at him from the corner of her eye. He was looking at her with a rather befuddled expression. Hm…with that kind of look I must really have miss judged his personality. She felt her face warm from embarrassment. "Ah…I’m so sorry for that little outburst. It’s just that I’ve been under a lot of stress recently, what with the council pushing me to get married and the shark attacks getting more frequent…" She gazed off into the distance at the ocean that lay before her and sighed a heavy sigh. It was hard being queen.

Cyprinus smiled as he watched the kirin stir and get her bearings. She looked kind of tired, which might explain why she fell asleep in the ocean. He shielded his face as she tried to shake the water off of herself, though with how bad she was, she probably didn't go swimming that much. Which was a shame really, she had the fins for it, fins that he still couldn't decide what to do with!
Watching her storm towards the ocean, he was a little dismayed that she didn't even thank or scold him for waking her up. Usually it was one of the two, not simply being ignored. But then she noticed him, he would get a response of some sort for sure! When she marched up to him he froze though, not sure if he should back up or run or pretend like he was a cloud and let her pass through him. Why were these things so complicated?!
His eyes went wide when she spoke to him, he voice seemed...different. Maybe she had accidentally swallowed some bad sea water and it rearranged her cells enough! Cyprinus nodded to himself, that seemed like a logical conclusion. His ears perked up at the mention of a throne though, did that mean she was royalty? He had been so thoughtless, treating her like a common Noodle! He wasn't sure what to say or how to apologize for such a grave offense, but luckily she wasn't through. He relaxed a little when her tone softened, finally coming up with what he hoped was the proper way to address her, bowing his head and staring at the sand by her regal feet as he pleaded with her. "Your highness, please forgive me! I merely thought you shouldn't be sleeping in the cold water is all, and carried you to the beach to warm up! I would never think of trying to kill an appetizing Noodle such as yourself!"
How could he be so careless? He should have known that a refined and well-groomed Noodle could only be royalty, and he even invited her to his restaurant, it was in no shape to be seen by the likes of her! He would have to spend the day cleaning it up and getting his best dining sets out before he could let her enter his unworthy establishment! All the work he needed to do, and all the fish he would need to catch, he would need a full selection of only the best specimens! And...oh dear, he would probably need to properly bath and groom himself in order to be presentable, no aristocrat would wish to be served by a chef that smelled like the ocean, that would never do! He ventured a suggestion as a stalling measure, there was no way he would be able to have his restaurant ready before the sun set. "If it pleases your highness, I previously wished to invite you to my humble sushi restaurant, but I'm afraid it is in no shape to be seen right now. Perhaps I can schedule her highness for lunch or dinner tomorrow?"
He continued staring at her elegant feet, unwilling to look at the doom that surely awaited him if he met her gaze. He hoped he would not have to resort to groveling, as sand took forever to get out of his fur, but at the same time he wouldn't risk his own neck if the situation demanded it. Such nobility commanded respect!

Queen Dementia smiled at the Noodle as he apologized. He seemed a bit flustered. Yes, I have misjudged him, she thought, This kind hearted Noodle will not harm me. He seemed like a very smart Noodle too, even if a little odd. Still dripping with ocean water she stood and bowed her head to him. "Oh no good sir! You were the one who pulled me from the ocean. I don’t really recall what happened, but if you saved me then I am in your debt. I thank you from the very bottom of my heart for your quick thinking."
The sun was setting fast and Queen Dementia could not possibly return home in time before dark. I certainly do not want to be caught out alone when the sharks start hunting, she thought. She racked her brain as hard as she could, trying to think of what to do until she could get back home. Since she had awaken, the crowds of the beach had thin considerably and the breeze from the ocean was only getting colder. Her ears flicked when he mentioned he owned a sushi restaurant. This Noodle must be important on this strange surface world if he owned his own business.
Queen Dementia looked down at herself in dismay. Her beautiful fur, which she usually kept so shiny and clean, was covered in grimy bits of sand. How could she go anywhere looking like this? The uncomfortable itching sensation on her underbelly confirmed she had also gotten sand in between her scales as well. "Damn, this is going to take ages to get out." she muttered, and then looked up, alarmed, as she realized she had said that out loud. What is he going to think of royalty if they swear? She blushed violently.
"I apologize for my language; it has been a long day. Sir, I am sure your restaurant is more than suitable for me to visit right now, if you do not mind. A place to clean up as well would be much appreciated. For you see I have no place to stay for the night and would be honored to stay at your home…if you’ll have me." She added that last part to try to be polite. She was used to just asking for things and getting them regardless of what anyone else wanted. He was the only person on this dry land that she knew, even if not very well. She really did not want to have to go find some place to stay with total strangers.
The blue Noodle had not really looked at her yet, she noticed, but stared intently at her feet. "Please stand, my good sir. You have saved my life and do not need to bow to me. We are friends now, yes? And, how very rude of me, I have not asked you your name! Your Highness or Your Majesty, work just fine for me. But what may I call you?" She beckoned the Noodle to stand. Although kind and smart, this Noodle was a little slow. She did not want to complain but she was cold and tired. All she could picture was her magnificent four poster bed back home, calling her name.

Cyprinus remained bowed even as she thanked him, deciding to stay on the safe side as he wasn't quite sure how to respond. Did one look at the noble thanking you, or remain bowed lest you be punished for such disrespect? "Think nothing of it your highness! I simply did what I thought was best at the time, as...I would have done for anyone." He almost said 'as I'm sure you would have', but he didn't want to chance being rude. Perhaps she wouldn't have, and had servants who did such rescuing for her?
He did notice that she swore, but didn't dare say anything about it. Being of royal lineage surely must be stressful enough to merit it, though he could only imagine what it must be like. Ears perking at her request to visit his restaurant, and even further his home, he was unsure of how to respond. Though his restaurant certainly wasn't fit to be see by royalty of any sort, his living space above the restaurant was even less so, hardly fit to be seen by his own family...if he had any at least. He shuddered at the idea of allowing a noble the use of his own home with the state it was in, and how much peril it would put his own life in if he refused, but if she had nowhere else to go he couldn't turn her away, royalty or not.
He hesitated even as she commanded him to stand. Was he supposed to listen to her or remain bowed regardless? Was she trying to trick him into looking at her in order to rationalize ruining his life? He tensed up in his indecision, until she suggested that they were friends, to which he looked up at her wide-eyed. She considered him, a lowly commoner, a friend already? He hesitantly allowed himself to relax, standing straight in order to meet her gaze, though a little confused. He was sure he had already told her his name, perhaps that was just a formality and she didn't actually care what it was the first time? That seemed like a reasonable enough explanation, and he politely bowed as he introduced himself once more. "I-I am Cyprinus, your majesty, common fisherman and sushi chef, at your service."
Looking up at her once more, he thought for a moment before speaking again, cautious of what he said, as he wasn't quite sure how to converse with a noble who was also a friend. "My ah...restaurant is nearby, and my living space the floor above it, though I caution her highness that it is even less presentable than the restaurant proper. Still, I would be...honored if you were to grace my humble dwelling with your presence."
Suddenly remembering why he was out here in the first place, he looked over his shoulder at where he had dropped his net of salmon, ears drooping a bit when he saw a group of gulls already making quick work of the fish. Oddly enough, they weren't screaming about it anymore though. Maybe in the future he could use the threat of seagulls to keep his catch silent? He shook his head for a moment, this was not the time, he had a guest to attend to! Turning back to the aristocrat of unknown rank, a little unsure of how to escort one of her stature somewhere, he smiled and ventured a guess. "If it is alright with your highness, I shall take you to my residence at once." That sounded polite enough, he thought, and he turned to face the general direction of his home, looking over at her and nodding in the direction they would travel.
