Harrison thought a long time before sending the text.

can we talk about the sahara?

The Moon Division Leader had always been this kind of mysterious shadowy figure that he assumed was the best of the best at keeping everybody safe. But everybody hadn't been safe. Everybody was dead. Most of the Sun/Moon division. For what they had been told wasn't even a real mission, they'd all died to create a distraction. And maybe that wasn't even Edith's call. He didn't know what to think, except about how much it worried him. But in the end, he figured this talk was due.

He didn't even know if he had the clearance to hear the answers.

Even after 7 weeks in the bunkers, Julie's death still felt like they'd happened yesterday, and the rest of them- especially the Suns that had been relying on the Moons to keep them safe, recovering in the tents, weighed heavy on him.

outside @ south side of main building

He was sitting on a bench, in the shade. It seemed like as good a place to talk about it as any.

Ten minutes later Edith arrived, her weapon summoned and slung over her shoulder. Wearing a sleeveless jersey and backwards Yankees cap, the petite leader shoved a bucket full of baseballs at the Intermediate. "Hughes right? I've got business at the beach, so let's walk and talk. How's your aim?"

Harrison stood as she approached.

"Hughes, yes m'am."

Harrison gave her miniature, genuine smile at the bucket.

"A little rusty," he admitted, but gripped the handle dutifully.

"Good, you can pitch," the small smile was returned for a brief moment, and then she glanced away as they headed toward the beach. "So what's this about the Sahara?"

It was tough to know where to start with that one. Mostly he wanted to stare at his feet and give a lot of monosyllabic responses. But he fell into step behind her, trying to narrow it into something that wasn't all mixed up in hurt and accusation. He struggled to put the doubt into a question. It wasn't anyone from his generation of hunters that ended up dead. Not his friends on the chopping block. But one day, it would be.

"I guess I just want to know...why it happened, m'am."

Looking straight ahead, Edith answered evenly, "Why's a pretty broad question, feel free to narrow it down a bit, but the answer will likely be the same. We were at war, and in war there are going to be casualties among your active forces."

"I know that," Harrison said gruffly. "Only-"

This was hard. "Caelius said we were supposed to look distracted. And disorganized. So...they all had to die, because of that?" It ate at him that almost the entire Sun and Moon division were considered disposable resources by whoever was designating responsibilities, when it came to battle plans. "On account of a distraction?"

"There's a difference between acting and being, Hughes," Edith's lip's tightened at the implication. "Nobody had to die, it wasn't some sacrifice for the greater good. It was an ambush, and an effective one at that. Nothing left to do about it other than learn from it." They had reached the beach fairly quickly, Edith's brisk pace more than compensating for her smaller stature.

When they came to a likely-looking spot, Harrison put the bucket down and fished out a ball from the pile. He took some time to stretch his shoulders and first, so he didn't pull anything.

Bosses made him nervous in the first place, and it had been, hell, a while since he'd thrown a ball at anything besides a wall.

"Guess I was worried about some s**t like- it was one of Caelius's plans and maybe it didn't matter who came out of it, long as it was trainees and Sun and Moon division."

Snorting softly as she warmed up, Edith gave the younger man a wry look, "Don't be too relieved, that boy will use us all up like tin soldiers given half a chance." She took a few practice swings, and continued, "As the Death leader, he tends to have more cards at his disposal, and most of the time, that means he'll get the job done. That's his concern and priority. The cost of getting the job done? That's us. That's our concern and priority."

The leader gave him a nod and took up a ready stance, "Doesn't mean you shouldn't listen to the man, but just remember that you'll need to be looking out where he won't be, got it?"
