He was patrolling the borders that day, only because looking for water was useless when it was so hot. He almost felt as if his blood a boil. When he saw a figure in the distance, he dug his claws into the sand. He knew the nergui were out there, knew they could be close, but would one come so close, and so..alone?

He roared out a reply to the intruder.

Fen'wei knew they could also be wanting to join. Even with teh war upon them, the firekin were still open to those that could fight.

Was this a worthy opponent, and was he ready to defend?

No would be a true test, he estimated.

Azulon often did things on whim. Perhaps not as much as he once had, but he really did. That said, coming to the firkein hadn't been something he'd done simply because he felt like it. Sure, it probably all came down to that, in the end. But he'd thought this out quite a bit, actually. He'd been a rogue his entire life, but perfectly aware of his heritage. He'd spent most of his time doing whatever he wanted, but without any intent or purpose. Not that the red lion ever felt he needed to know the meaning of life, or anything.

But somehow, being able to roam about freely and do whatever you wanted got old. He figured the lands of his father were as good as any to do something... interesting, for a change. Something that required more of him, perhaps.

There was a screening process, it seemed. Suitable for such a pride, and Azulon was not worried about it at all. He didn't get worked up over the ordeal. He was perfectly aware that yes, defeat was possible, but it didn't seem to bother him. He was hardly in a hurry.

He looked as he always did as he walked; entirely unreadable. His body didn't seem particularly relaxed, or tense, or anything. He imegined the firekin were usually assigned to 'hopeful rogues' for duels, but his opponent had yet to show up. He did hear a roar, and raised his head, flicking his ears in the direction of the pale lion.

He supposed it was as good a firekin as any, and roared a reply. Once the other lion had come closer, he spoke. "I'm here to join. You may start." His voice was just as telling as his posture.

This other male was darker, perhaps, more muscular beneath his dark exterior. Fen'wei had muscle, but he was also more..fluffed, you might say. His white coat made him a stand out amongst all the red and darker pelts within the firekin. He gave no verbal answer, just a dip of his head, a huff, and he charged.

He kept his head down, watching the male idly, and when close enough made a move to the right, but grounded himself with a rear leg to swing back the other way, thrusting one out out and forward towards the male's closest shoulder, a snarl in his throat.

He would not give up so easily.

He would not be so bold as to say he let that happen. Yes, ideally Azulon wouldn't have gotten hit. He'd even admit he hadn't made a good enough effort to avoid the attack. It was not like he felt ashamed about it at all, nor was he particularly concerned by this start to the fight.

It hurt, of course, but he didn't wince. He growled, though, and took this opportunity to turn and lean in closer to the pale lion. His paws darted up quickly, one going simply for a good hold while the other went for his face, his hind legs pushing him onwards.

He felt his paw connect but soon he was connected and intertwined in this dark male's arms and being thrust backward. HIs weight was great and Fen'wei hit the ground hard and he snarled in response, and kicked upwards with his paws, hoping to get the male in the stomach, gaining him a moment to roll away.
This male fought dirty, but was strong. If he truly was a warrior, one to be true to the firekin, they could sure use this strength against the nergui dogs.

However, Fen'wei, while trying to escape left his paws unsteady upon the sand.

That had gone nicely. Well, okay, yes, there were a few... er, side effects, as it were. Though he had the other male beneath him for now, of course it left his stomach exposed. It wouldn't be the first time this sort of thing happened, and Azulon did always overcome... but this firekin was certainly quite a bit stronger than what he usually went up against, and he successfully managed to get away.

For the time being, anyways. This time he didn't growl, rather, headed for the other male as soon as his balance would allow such a thing. For a lion who hadn't grown in the sands, he seemed sure footed enough, and caught up before Fen Wei got too far. Azulon did prefer close combat, as it often made others uneasy. He would strive not to let his opponent wiggle too far away.

He went for the hind paws, to help the other male trip up. The idea was for him to either turn around to face him, or have him stumble long enough for Azulon to get in front.

Fen'wei stumbled and went to the sand again. He pushed himself to stand, his opponent in front, close quarters, and he snarled. He never fought like this before..never...fought before. This was a strange sensation. But he had to be ready, had to prepare for when it counted most. He wouldn't give up, not now, not ever. No.

He eyed his opponent, reading movement carefully and sprung forward and then thrust up from the sand, hoping to knock against the other's chest, to maybe wind him, or at least knock him over to gain some ground as well.

But he wasn't sure it was strong enough.

It certainly wasn't strong enough. It seemed Fen Wei had failed at getting his paws to hit anywhere important, and Azulon had been ready for him. He didn't quite want to tackle the other male down just now, so rather than attempt overpower him, as he was rather confident he could have, he fell back. Only a couple steps, only enough for Fen Wei's surge to be useless.

Almost as if chiding him, Azulon raised a paw and lowered it as the other male was landing, aiming, of course, for the face. His claws were unsheathed, because it was a fight, and he'd have his claws unsheathed in a fight. But he politely seemed to be focusing on hitting hard, rather than tearing up the pale lion's face.

He felt a great pain in his face, his jaw and again he was thwarted away from his dark opponent. He grinned to himself as he pushed himself to stand in the sand. Shook his body, eyed the male again. He half circled the male, taking him in, trying to see a weak spot. But there was none. This male seemed to be in his prime.

Fen'wei rushed for him again and struck out, gracious he didn't have scars across his face, but was mindful of where the paws mind land.

He didn't need to feel proud about another successful hit, Azulon seemed to get over it as quickly as he might being attacked. As his opponent circled him, the red male followed, keeping uncomfortably close, perhaps, but not seeming intent on striking, at least not immediately.

He dodged to the side when the next attack came, but only just. This time he put his strength in his hind paws to ram at the other male's side as he passed, hoping to compromise his balance even more. And perhaps cause some bruising.

Fen'wei was hit hard and the sand accepted him readily. He huffed and puffed taking in breaths. His ribs, most likely bruised a bit now, from this male's strength. But he had to try, he had to press onward. Forcing himself up, Fen'wei made no motion to move forward, only to try and guard himself.

He was tired though, winded, and did not know how much longer he could take the blows.

But, he was training, and proving this male worthy.

This time, Azulon did mean to tackle the other male down. He didn't give Fen Wei much time on his paws, and, already quickly close to him, smacked his paws, hard as he might, against the other male. He intended to end this fight pretty, and all. The best way of knowing you won was, quite literally, finishing on top. Or at least with another good, strong hit.

Out of reflex, he might have gone for the throat. He stayed himself, though, and only blinked at his opponent, before stepping away. The fight was over, and he waited for the other male to speak. Merely a formality; Azulon knew he had won.

He accepted the gesture, and bowed his head to the male of respect, honor and pride. "You have proven your strength and warrior's spirit. A fire burns in you likes those that dwell here. We will welcome you into our ranks," Fen'wei said as he raised his head, eyes meeting the male.

He raised a paw, as if an escort, "come with me, I shall bring you to where the regents are, or at the very least, other soliders, so you may meet your new kin."

This male was now a child of fire.

The other lions words might have been pretty to some ears, but the [now former] rogue was indifferent to them. Azulon caught himself thinking he held little to no interest in socializing with the rest of the pride, or the regents, or anyone. But he quietly reminded himself that, yes, there was a use now. He was no longer a rogue, doing all he wished, for the heck of it. There were drawbacks, but this was a project Azulon intended to excel in, and that meant everything else that came with it. Not simply being a great fighter, but actually being part of a pride. That meant socializing.

"Very well." He said, coolly, and accepted the escort, walking with the other male deeper into the desert.
