Today was an important day. Revyra had reminded herself of this fact many times before now but it was getting to the point where every time she thought it she wished to roll her eyes. Practically every day since she had been discovered to be pregnant had been deemed to be important. It did make sense in the way, these children were not only the children of the herds protector but also the first foals born after the great attack on the herd. It was because of that that so much of Revyra's pregnancy had been deemed important. Or perhaps all of this 'importance' was just normally experienced by pregnant mares. Revyra would never know, she would never be a normal mare by any stretch of the imagination.

She sighed and looked over her shoulder, some days were more important than others. The birthing, hatching and naming had all been fairly important occasions albeit private ones. Today was a special occasion that Revyra suspected was unique to this herd and maybe even to their situation. Today was the day that her children were officially presented to the herd. It couldn't be a more perfect day for the event. A few clouds dotted the sky, white, full and non-threatening. There was a bit of a wind but nothing too disruptive, Revyra would make sure to stand where the wind would reach her face. She wasn't sure what to make of it but something about the day was making her feel nervous.

Hayagriva came forward to stand at Revyra's side. The children weren't far behind him. They would be coming soon. He had but the briefest of moments to share alone with his beloved mate before the meeting with the herd. "Are you ready for the show?" He smiled dryly. He liked public spectacles about as much as he liked picking burrs out of his fur. He had never been one for flashy display and had become even more private after the death of his parents.

These ceremonies weren't for their benefit. If they were, Haya would have just as happily skipped it. This was for the good of the herd. They needed to see that life was beginning anew and carrying on. A tentative normalcy had been regained but to Haya, it felt as fragile as a spider's web. They had once been strong and would be strong again, but not yet. It might even be soon, but not yet.

Along with his brothers and sisters, Scythe slowly came to where their parents stood. Still young, he did not quite grasp the purpose of the upcoming presentation, though he knew it was important. He wanted to do his parents proud and tried to imitate their strong stances. He planted his hooves solidly in the ground nearby them and did his best imitation of a steely gaze. The translated effect was almost comical on a foal his age, though he tried so hard to be serious. Whatever was going to happen, he was ready. He carried the name of his grandfather, one of the great founders of the herd. He understood that much, and would never forget it.

Bhikkuni stood close to her older brother drawing spirals in the ground with her spaded tail. They were all going to be presented to the herd in some sort of ceremony. That's what they had been told. It was just no one had bothered to tell them why or how. Everyone was taking it seriously though so Bhikkuni reasoned that she should as well. Looking at her brother's face she made an attempt at mimicking his stern expression. It felt too unnatural. She sighed and settled for a relaxed smile. This felt more natural for her and it would have to do, unless of course she was told not to.

User ImageThe eldest girl meanwhile seemed lost in her own thoughts as she tipped her head to face the wind, eyes drifting closed as she felt the struggle of two forces against her skin, the warmth of the sun bringing warmth and the cool wind trying to sap the warmth away.

Humming softly without a particular melody, her head waved side to side as she spread her wings slightly, feeling the breeze in her feathers. Even in anxious moments, she found joys in the littlest things, reflecting on the sensations that were still fresh and new to her, savoring how they felt. She tipped her head up to look at her parents, wondering why they were so edgy as her soft smile faded slightly at the tension.

The youngest, Dasharathi, trailed a bit behind the rest of his family. It wasn't because he was slow, or even because he was young and easily distracted. No, this particular little colt had every confidence in the world, and that in turn often meant he was rarely in a rush. There was no need for urgency (short of a legitimate emergency) and so he took his time about approaching.

There was some sort of big-to-do event. He didn't know what being 'presented' meant, but the cogs of his mind were anxiously trying to put the pieces together. His parents seemed particularly solemn this day, and while Dash got the feeling this was A Big Deal, he still hadn't quite figured out the details. He was certain they all would find out soon enough, but it never hurt to think or wonder.

And there was indeed much wonder in this world.

Catching up to his siblings, his movements still slow and deliberate, the youngest said nothing. He picked his way to stand next to his mother, stealing a glance now and then at his siblings. He hadn't been alive for very long, but Dash was a regular know-it-all . . sort of. And what he DID know was that tonight was . . . kind of weird. Really weird. Hopefully whatever was causing his family to be particularly stoic (more so than usual) would pass quickly.

He really wanted to know if they had to be so quiet. . . .but he also didn't want to ask because that would mean he didn't know. For now, it was best to keep his mouth shut.

User ImageNow Revyra did roll her eyes. Asking her if she was ready for this spectacle was like asking a bird with its wings clipped if it was ready to be dropped off a cliff. She would never be ready. "You'll be doing whatever talking needs doing I trust?" She asked with a raised brow. The answer to that question would either be 'yes' or Revyra would have to inform her mate that it was going to be a silent ceremony whether it should be or not.

"You do that and I will make sure that the children are in order." This she would have done either way but it sounded more fair if she pretended it was some new job. Which, in a sense, it was.

Revyra turned to face her children and go about getting them lined up but found herself marveling briefly over them once again. Each of the four had ended up feathered, some of them in ways that she hadn't thought possible, three had inherited their father's tail and each and every one of them were a new point of pride for the mare. "Alright, we will do this in order of age." It seemed to be the most sensible way to go about organizing them.

"Utpalini, come stand here in front of me." She called to her daughter with the striped mane. Revyra found that she was the most like her in breed with small tail feathers along with a mane and tail of hair. "Scythe, in line behind Utpalini." Where had he picked up the look he was wearing from? "Bhikkuni, behind Scythe. Dasharathi, bring up the end of the line."

"Yes, yes. I'll do any speaking that needs to be done." It was another one of the necessary evils of being the herd protector. Some day in the future he might be able to get a younger successor who could take on some of these duties for him, or maybe even one of the children. Until such a day that he could pass it off to someone else, he was stuck with it.

"Listen to your mother, children," he droned absently. Although the herd was not yet in sight, he thought he could hear their gathering murmur. Every once in a while there was a voice loud enough that he could recognize, but the others were as wind whispering through lotus petals. He was surprised at himself for the comparison to come into his mind. It was too lyrical to have been something he invented. It was probably a forgotten expression from his mother.

At the thought of Vara, Haya felt a familiar sad ache. For her and his father's memories he would suffer through a thousand ceremonies.

Scythe was moving as soon as his mother gave the direction. He moved to stand at what he judged would be his place and, tail twitching, stood. He was starting to feel a little nervous about what was to come. Each new breath brought along another vision of something that could go wrong. He could trip, he could miss his cue and toddle around looking like a fool, he could fail to seem properly serious. He bit his lip and sneaked glances around at his siblings. Was he the only one nervous? Chagrined, he made his tail be still and retreated back to his standby of attempting dignity. If no one else was worried, he would try not to be either.

User Image There was something soothing about her older sister's nameless tune. Bhikkuni's tail had begun to move along to the sound when it suddenly stopped. Her nerves set in. She glanced about at her siblings hoping to find solace with one of them but found nothing to take comfort in before her mother spoke.

Line up? It was a simple enough order but hearing it still made Bhikkuni jump ever so slightly. It seemed that she was feeling more on edge than she had previously thought. She took in a deep breath to calm herself before turning to follow directions and take her place behind Scythe and before Dasharathi. She didn't move. Scythe looked like he was about to twitch out of his skin. Bhikkuni shook her head before moving to her spot pausing just long enough to whisper into Scythe's ear that it would be okay. Or at least, she was pretty sure it would be okay. She had faith that they weren't about to be led into something they couldn't handle.

Dutifully lining up, the young filly watched her parents expectantly. Clearly they'd explain to them what exactly they were supposed to do, what to expect, right? Otherwise they wouldn't know what to do or how to behave!

Little 'Lini reflected on this as she continued to wait expectantly, tossing her head back and forth to look at her father, mother, and siblings, making sure everything was going as planned. After a while, the wait was too much, her lip sore from being bitten so hard to keep her youthful curiousity contained.

"Māṁ*?" With how stressed her father seemed, it seemed best to ask their mother first since she was currently set to making sure they were in order, then her father. "Pitā? What're we doin'?"

The young colt hesitated just a moment, looking out in the distance where his parents stared, but honestly wasn't sure what drew their attention. They seemed tense, anxious in a way, but the violet colt couldn't comprehend why. Well, he figured they'd find out soon enough. Maybe it was just an adult thing, anyway.

Giving a large, stretch of his wings, the colt turned and slowly made his way past his siblings. He bumped his shoulder, or let his tail, reach out to touch each one as he passed, both to give -- and maybe take -- just a little reassurance. He didn't object taking up the rear, or being last in line. This meant he could better look after his siblings, and the protector within him wanted nothing more than to do good.

Besides, going last always meant he was the most memorable (at least in his opinion). But exactly why they were lining up was still . . . unclear. Maybe his sisters question would get them some answers.

User Image Once her children were in a line Revyra walked down beside them doing final checks. "We're showing you to the rest of the herd, Utpalini." She answered her oldest girl dryly. Perhaps a different, better mother would have more patience in her voice when dealing with her children.

She brushed her wing against Utpalini and smiled as best as she could. "It's nothing dangerous...it's just...taxing..." She grumbled as her words trailed off. At least this would be the last silly ceremony for a while. Revyra moved on to Scythe and then Bhikkuni making sure that there feathers were as neat as she could make them. She stopped at the end of the line looking over Dash's tail still not sure what to make of it. After a long moment she took a breath, nuzzled her youngest briefly and turned to face her mate.

"All right, Haya, everyone's in order. Lead on."

Her ears twitching, unsure of what to think, Little Utpa' lifted her head to touch her mother's feathers with her ears cocked askew, her mind going over the information as she settled into place, waiting for everyone else to settle in behind her.

Meeting people didn't sound like it really should require so much pomp and circumstance to her, though not quite in those words. People can just poke their heads in and say hello, and kids could be running about. It didn't seem to make sense to her, and it seemed to make her parents frustrated and snappy. Meeting people should be a happy, fun time -- they got to finally see someone new after the last few weeks had past, yet it seemed as if it was being taken far too seriou-

Her attention snapped back into place as Revyra's attention turned to her father, telling him to lead. Being in the front, she needed to be sure to pay attention since she was leading her siblings after him, and if she didn't go, they'd get no where fast, "Ready Pitā!"
