I'm sure all of us have by now discovered certain items we always fall back on when we're stuck in an outfit rut? Or just certain items that we always add anyway, just by default.
I know I use Oculus Mythica + Jenny Doll Blush whenever I don't know what to do with my eyes or face. And Will-o-Wisp whenever I flat out have no idea what to do with my avi's legs and feet. They all fit on a pastel color palette, which works with the majority of my avis.
I know we all mostly know each other's styles (ahem, Dress-Up-Like-Another-Regular), but I was just kind of curious what items (and the line of thinking involved) you guys fall back on.

Much of the time, I open some evolving items more or less at random, and pick which poses look best together.

Since I don't have a lot of items, nor do I want to really spend time getting them I stick to simplicity and try to scan the shops for items that are nice.
My priority has always been to make sure my avatars were never cluttered.
I always try to stick with a theme of some kind... that's another thing. Than I can never figure out quite what theme, which is a huge problem with me in creation in general.
I had a few things I used to use as fall back items a while ago and build around them. To be honest I don't think I am really good at it, but I try. I constantly have an issue with my avatars and am rarely satisfied.
I may have mentioned before when I am creating something I don't like being limited to what I have rather than creating something from limitless possibilities, so I keep it pretty chill on Gaia.

Pretty much what Kitty said, but I start with matching shirt pants shoes, and then my EIs take over so long as they match and look decent together.
Oh, and always have a Halo or Laurels.

I'm inspired by street gear, pop music artists, what's currently trendy, and manga. So when I pull an outfit out of my booty I'm just like "aw yeah I'm totally digging K-Pop today". And that, everyone, is the mind-work behind my dress.
I'm so predictable. (sob)

I typically use items that change my eyes and work from there.
Usually it goes like this: Change eyes, look at EIs, try to add a store item and voila! Cherry!
