After his shift, Rory went to his room to grab his toiletries before he headed to take a shower. It had been a long day and all the running back and forth in that labs had made him sweat profusely. He stayed in there for about twenty minutes before shutting off the water, drying off, and pulling on an old pair of jeans with worn holes in both of the knees and a t-shirt that had seen better days.

He dropped his toiletries off in his room and checked to make sure Shadow wasn't in there sleeping or whatever he did while Rory was gone. He closed the door behind him as he left and started making his way down to the rec room. Maybe he'd find another movie to watch.

The rec room was already occupied by a man in a sharp but casual red waistcoat and suit trousers. His grey-black buttoned shirt was pretty nice looking too, as was his black leather belt and boots.

What probably drew the eye about him more than his put-together appearance or general good looks, however, was the fact that he was sitting behind a bright red sewing machine with absolutely no sign of embarrassment or furtiveness. Whatever was being made was white, and by all appearances was coming together rather swiftly.

The sight of the man in red and the bright sewing machine confused the blond for a moment. He glanced between the material being sewn together and the man a couple of times before going over to the game system and turning it on. It would be easier to play a game than to try to hear a movie over the sewing machine.

He knelt down to find a game to play, deciding to ignore the man and his project in favor of a bit of relaxation and possible zombie battles. Or racing, racing was fun.

He didn't look up right away, because he really didn't want to mess up this seam; the quality linen had not been cheap and he didn't have any to spare. Once he finished off the careful row of stitches however he looked up. When he took in the figure kneeling on the floor he raised his eyebrows. "Laundry day?" he asked in a casual drawl, red eyes flicking over every detail of the blond's attire. "The name's Kirk," he went on, "or K.O., or Captain if you fancy; I'm new around here."

He pulled out a couple game boxes and read the back of both of them to decide which he'd rather play. He didn't look up until he heard the voice of the other man. He gave a small grin at his question. "No, not yet," he replied looking up at the man in red. "Nice to meet you, Kirk. I'm Rory."

Really?

"...Nice to meet you too Rory." KO's reply came out slightly hesitantly as he gave the blond another once over, a decidedly sceptical expression spreading across his face. "You... usually dress like that off duty then?" The red head carefully cut off the threads to separate his work in progress garment from the sewing machine. Said work in progress was casual suit trousers that would look right at home at a nice garden party once they were finished; they would go with an already finished vest, which hung on a coat hanger dangling from one of the shelves ranked with DVDs.

Rory shrugged and tried to ignore the look the other man was sending him. He chose the racing game that was in his hand and put the disk into the system before turning it and the television on. He took the controller in his hand and moved to sit on the floor in front of his couch.

"Yeah, pretty much. If I'm gonna be relaxing, what''s the point in dressing up?" This guy, Kirk, must have thought it was important. Who gets that dressed up to sew stuff?

He'd never understood that attitude, he had endlessly despaired at getting his old partner to spruce himself up. The big guy never had liked good clothes that took effort but he'd tolerated them sometimes, just to please him....

Ha, but that was a long time ago now, and there was no point getting bogged down in it.

Shaking away the memories, KO shook his head at Rory. "There's always a point; clothes say a lot about a man you know! Don't you want to impress the... well," he made a languid gesture, "whichever sex it is you'd be looking to impress; I don’t like to assume.” Straight, he guessed, but he always preferred to let people think he found them ambiguous, plus of course if he was wrong nobody ever knew about it.

“Looking good doesn't have to mean being uncomfortable either you know,” he went on, “and it doesn't take all that much effort to at least look at least reasonably good either." Looking as good as he did, of course, took a good deal of time and effort but he was more than prepared to put it in. Being pleasing to the eye not only made him feel good, but also changed how the world treated him. For all that well meaning idiots might argue otherwise, looks mattered.

Clothes say a lot about a man, you know!

Rory gritted his teeth slightly at that comment. He vaguely remembered words similar coming from a more feminine voice as she tightened the tie around his neck during the first fitting for his suit. He still didn't understand the comment; doesn't what a man does say more about him that his clothes?

As soon as he pushed those thoughts from his mind KO's next comment hit him. He tried to ignore the implication that the red head wasn't sure which of the two sexes he preferred and focused on the question itself. Did he want to impress the girls on base? A brief thought of a short head of red came to mind and he tried to fight back a small grin as he felt his face grow slightly warm.

Again he fought to put those thoughts out of his head and focus on the conversation and choosing the best car in the video game. "Sure, but if they're not around and you don't plan on seeing them, what's the point? Besides shouldn't they like me for me, and not my clothes?"

Granted Rory never took too much time and effort to deal with his looks. Most of the time he just ran his hands through his hair instead of brushing it out, leaving it in the ruffled mess that it always became no matter what. Plus he did make an attempt to buy jeans and shirts that fit him properly when he needed new clothes. He couldn't help it if time had been rough on the materials.

KO smirked and lounged languidly back in his chair. Funny, in a place like this he hadn't expected to run into naive idealism but there it was, he supposed organized crime took all sorts in the end. "A lot of things happen in life we don't plan on Rory; why he or she could walk in at any moment," he said with a fluid gesture at the door. "As for liking you for you, of course they should, but if you don't get their attention to start with how are things going to progress? I mean, I've been around and I like to think I've seen quite a lot, but I've never heard anyone say 'wow, look at the personality on him!' Like it or not looks matter, and that's not about to change in a hurry."

As the conversation continued, Rory's stomach started to sink. When was the last time he had made an attempt to look put together since he came here? Especially when he was around her. Hospital clothes, worn out clothes, hell even that stupid monkey suit he wore to the League event. There was no way he impressed anyone that night with the constant tugging on his sleeves, trying to make a jacket he had outgrown awhile ago still fit. He could only imagine what they had thought of him; what she had thought of him.

"Yeah," Rory replied quietly, putting the game controller to the side. He didn't feel like playing anymore. "I guess you're right."

As Rory started to look crestfallen KO continued to grin and shook his head. “No need to look so glum Rory, I would be more than happy to help you out! Don't go out and get yourself any of this off the peg trash that everyone’s wearing; give me an idea of what you like, I’ll knock up some designs, you pay for the materials, and we’ll have you looking sharp for your paramour in no time.”

He could ask Rory to pay for his time too of course but right now friends were more valuable to him than mere cash; being new to the area and the organization and totally alone was not a safe feeling, or a pleasant one. He just wasn't a loner type, and when you led a dangerous life you needed people you could count on to have your back... and it didn’t hurt if people felt they owed you a favour or two either. Money you could only spend once, but allies paid for themselves time and time again.

Rory looked over at the man at the sewing machine and took in how he was dressed. Why did he feel like if he accepted his offer, he'd end up looking like a blond version of that guy? Then again maybe it would make some of the others take him seriously when he wanted them to. Besides when was the last time he had bought clothes for himself, or his mentor had bought him clothes?

"I like to keep is causal. I'm not really one of the whole get up you have there," he motioned to KO's outfit. He took another long look at the man. He didn't look like the type that would go out of his way for others. "Though why would you do that? You just met me."

Not stupid enough to just pounce on an offer of favours then? Some brains was useful in an ally but did make them harder to manipulate. KO then thought of Star and revised that thought to 'usually', but then again there was a difference between being smart and being able to see past the end of your own abnormally pointy nose.

"I can do causal," KO assured casually. "Casual can still look good; something comfortable, easy on the eyes, unique but not too flash or fancy?" He preferred the flash himself in general, but even he accepted that a well designed pair of jeans could be flattering, and could be made to look different for everyone else's jeans too.

Then there was the matter of 'why'. "I like to make things," KO shrugged, still with his usual easy smile on his lips, "it's a hobby of mine, and...." he stood up and hung his partially finished trousers up with the vest, turning his back on Rory as he smoothed them down carefully. "I don't exactly have many friends here yet. Any. Offering people something is a good way to get them to take a bit of time for a lowly trainee, or so I've found in the past anyway." This was all very true; it was always nice to tell people things that were true, meant you didn't have to remember what lie you'd used.

This guy was a lower rank than him? Most of those he had met since coming here had either been Grunts or higher ranks. If this guy's experience was anything like his own had been, he felt slightly bad for the guy. "Yeah, training can be rough. It gets a bit better once you become a grunt, though not by much." If he could have one day of work in the lab where he didn't get shoved out of the way, he would be happy.

Rory hummed slightly and looked at the outfit KO had been working on. He could probably use some slightly fancier clothes to prevent a repeat of the League party, and depending on the material, flashy could also be good. He mustered a small smirk, "Maybe a little flashy? Can you work with leather?"
