Chaya was doing homework. Well, technically Chaya was doing homework. Frogs were valid potion ingredients. And you could never have too many frogs on hand for the cafeteria kitchens. So really, Chaya's expedition into the swamp behind the monster dorms was useful, very useful. She was catching frogs so she could extract frog eyeballs for the potion homework assignment. No, really.
Being just a little intangible really helped with being stealthy and not splashing. So when a soft, puppyish whimper drifted through the air, Chaya heard it clearly. She angled her ears towards the sound; when it came again, she set about tracking it. It didn't take her long to locate the source: a tiny grey wolf pup with a pair of little orange wings trembling right above its tucked tail. It stared at her with big, frightened eyes.
Chaya crouched down in front of the reedy patch where the pup was huddled; she pushed the clawed paw of her pelt back so the claws wouldn't scare the poor pup and extended her fingers to be sniffed. Once the pup had stretched out its nose shyly to say a proper hello, she reached carefully for its side, making no rapid movements and keeping her hand in sight at all times. To her surprise, the pup attempted clumsily to climb her arm, whining pitifully.
She picked it up gently, supporting its hind legs to make it feel secure, and realized that there was a thin ribbon tied lightly around its neck. "Ohh, you're lost, aren't you?" she said. "Let's go find your master." She lifted the pup up so she could take a good sniff at its fur; under the swampy muddy smells, a scent that wasn't the puppy's still lingered on its fur. She could feel her instincts orienting themselves like a compass needle; though she hadn't yet gained the ability to truly track anything, her internal compass swung, tugging her back towards school grounds.
Once she'd made her way out of the marsh, she shook the mud off her legs, tucked the puppy securely into the crook of her arm, where it promptly pushed its face into her elbow, and trotted off towards the main buildings of the school. She'd find the right smell there, she was sure of it.
