With each of the trials complete for the Wherhandler Apprentices, their supervisors had convened and reviewed their performance. Much deliberation and discussion over the merit of their new handlers was tossed about the office of Masterhandler Keller. Some had done wonderfully others had been terribly steeped in misfortune and lack of coordination but each had passed and they had formed ties - the most important part.
With the graduation list sorted and Keller's Clutch hardening, the summons went out to the anxiously awaiting apprentices. They would pick in the dead of night.
Instructions were given - greet the mother, bow, avert your gaze, select an egg, and back away. Simple, straight forward. There was no mess, no fuss, no tension for the lives of young dragons hanging in the balance.

After the trials, Kesin had waited with growing impatience for confirmation of how she'd done - she knew she had done better than the others in her trial (in her opinion, at least), but the rest were unknowns - and then for it to be time to choose her new partner. She was first, and it was hard to keep from grinning as they stood and waited, but she would save her boasting for later.
Once it was time, she approached and greeted the gold appropriately, bowing with eyes cast down. Then, quickly and carefully, she selected her egg: the largest of the clutch, for which she had great hopes. With her prize secure in her arms, she backed away, and finally allowed the grin she'd been suppressing to break.
Profile
Name: Kesin Age: 20 Gender: Female Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual Rank: Beastcraft (Caprine) Apprentice History: From a cothold outside of Bitra, Kesin is the daughter of two Beastcrafters who made their living breeding caprines. As their only child, Kesin was raised to do the same, but as she got older, she gradually grew discontent with her lot in life. Really, who wants to spend their whole sharding life raising goats? She developed an interest in runnerbeasts, and by the time she was in her teens, had decided that that was where her future - and the future of her family's farm - lay. She tried for the better part of a turn to convince her parents of this, but they disagreed. They didn't have the proper land, and besides, runners were a lot more expensive to keep than caprines.
Kesin eventually quieted, but never gave up on her wild dream. For turn after turn, she hoarded every last fraction of a mark she got her hands on, determined to buy her own runner one day, but marks don't exactly come easily to young Herders. At 19, desperate and few up with waiting, she snuck the marks she needed from her parents and went to market to buy her runner. Even with the stolen marks, though, she didn't have nearly enough for a fine riding beast, and came home with a working nag. But it was still a runner, and by the time she got home, Kesin already adored swaybacked mare.
...her parents, obviously, did not. They were furious, and Kes was forced to return the animal and bring back her parents' savings. Still, she refused to see that she was in the wrong, and resented them ever after. Several months later, she was Searched, and though she'd never had an eye to dragons, she took it as a way out. Within days of arriving at Benden, she encountered a recruiter for the Wherhandlers, and that was that. Description: Kesin stands at 5'4," with blue eyes and straight black hair she keeps cut to her shoulders. She's naturally on the fair side for Pernese, but having spent a lot of time outdoors in the sun, is quite tan...or was. Now that she's joined the wherhandlers and begun to take up their schedule, her tan is beginning to fade. She has a soft, pleasant face, and an hourglass figure she maintains with great vanity. She's pretty and she knows it! Personality: Kesin is self-confident to the point of arrogance, and always believes that she will come out on top - that she should come out on top. While she thinks of herself as the best and most deserving, though, she doesn't always like to do the necessary work to get there. She will for awhile, and initially sets into tasks with determination and drive, but if they take too long or prove too difficult, she begins to look for another, easier way to reach her goal. Unfortunately, this can and sometimes does involve dishonesty, underhanded tactics, or cutting corners. She will do whatever she has to do to get where she wants to be, but she'll do it while putting in a minimal amount of effort. With her focus and systematic approach, she is a master at the strategy of reaping rewards she hasn't always earned.
She will gladly work with others if it means getting things done faster, and will always accept help when it's offered, but will never express appreciation or gratitude. Kesin is too pretentious and self-absorbed to admit in any way that she owes anyone anything. People should help her because she simply deserves it for being as fabulous as she is, so why should she bother to thank them? She's only being given her due, and in general is someone who will push others down and climb over them to get what she wants.
Kes is intensely materialistic, and always wants the best of everything, which leads into a tendency towards jealousy. If someone else has something she wants, she immediately resents them for it.
Careesi had awaited her results anxiously. When the results had been announced she was shocked. Even after injuring her arm and all of her clumsiness and mistakes, she had somehow still managed to come out with a high score compared to some of the others. Although she felt most of the credit really should have gone to Kazzisk. After all, it was he who had saved the day really.
When it was her turn, the woman approached the mother and did exactly as she had been instructed. She greeted her and gave a deep bow while averting her gaze. Once she was sure that she would be allowed to approach, she quickly selected her egg and backed away. Smiling happily, she joined the other girl and waited for the rest to select theirs.

Sasar had not been all that anxious for the results. The fact that he'd been paired with as he saw it an unruly and rather mental wher rankled him. Tyrisk had been little help to him out in the field, getting himself mauled while that woman's blue did all the real work. Still, he himself had done well and hopefully the Masters would take that into account. He'd stopped Tyrisk from attacking after all and when the dim brown would listen, Sasar had commanded him well.
The results shocked him though. How had that clumsy oaf of a woman scored higher than him? Sure her wher did the most damage and could be credited with taking down their feral prey but she had failed to do anything?! Still, he'd scored third. At least they HAD noticed him. Maybe they weren't as dimglowed as he suspected. Sasar waited till Careesi was out of the way before making his way towards the clutch mother. He bowed low without looking at her and lifted an egg from the sand at her feet. Though the eggs were heavy his strong arms had little difficulty carrying it as his heavy footfalls retreated from the rest of the clutch.

Name: Sasar Age: 25 Gender: Male Sexual Orientation: Straight Craft/Rank: Journeyman Miner –Excavator, Apprentice Wherhandler History: Sasar is the 3rd child of Resar and Sasery. His eldest brothers are only a turn or two older than him and for the first 6 turns of his life he was the baby. Then Saresary was born. At first it was rough going, learning to share with his little brother and be one of the responsible older siblings. He took to it well though, growing to enjoy helping their mother care for the infant. It was expected he'd be the same when Ailin was born but something between the two never mixed. Ailin, born to an aging mother was too different from the rest of his brothers, he seemed weaker, certainly scrawnier and his temperment didn't fit in with the rest of the family. Sasar didn't know how to handle the more delicate child and instead of bonding grew distant from the rest of his family. This change in temperment and the further separation from his own identity as one of the little brothers soured Sasar. He grew into a moody and disagreeable teenager. He felt betrayed by his parents for having such a changeling and the rest of his brothers for accepting it. Sasar was the instigator in many of Ailin's bullying.
Sasar was the first brother sent to a Hall for craft training when he was 15. His size made the choice fairly obvious. His strength would serve him well in either mining or smithing. Sasar chose the mines mostly for the distance. The southern Mining hall was further away from Atlini than the Smithhall. Being put to such strenuous work at that age helped Sasar grow into the man he is today. He took to it like a dragon to flight, developing the discipline and work ethic he so sorely lacked. He genuinely enjoyed working in the mines. Sasar could never unlearn that initial impression of betrayal though. He felt that everyone should be able to put as much effort into their work as he did and if they didn't they were slackers and couldn't be trusted without supervision.
He walked the tables at 23 and petitioned to be transfered to a northern mine. He was given the opportunity to work at Benden, mining firestone for the dragons. No one expected Thread to fall again and the stone was strictly used for training for the Spring Games. As such it wasn't as important as other ores and Sasar was given leave to assist the foreman in running the small mine, learning the management side of things as well as putting his own back to the difficult task. He hoped to one day run a mine of his own.
When Thread return the demand on his small firestone mine increased tenfold. He was demoted back to generic mining as a new foreman was hired as well as a bevy of trained assistants. Their small mine was expanded and Sasar generally forgotten as one of the faceless workers. This irritated him deeply and when the search for potential wher handlers went out Sasar signed up immidiately. Wher handlers were valuable in the mines and those who were bonded were held above the average miner.
The news that his youngest brother, the one who'd caused him such strife in his youth, had been Searched from his own Harperhall infuriated Sasar. Not only was his brother a delicate little brat who's only talent was something completely useless but he was now chosen to join the riders? If they thought he'd be of use to them they were sorely mistaken. It was just another reason to believe they weren't taking their jobs seriously.
Description: Sasar is the tallest of his brothers, though height seems to run strongly through them. 6’7” and barrel chested there was no doubt this young man was destined for the mines. From his time as an apprentice and the turns he’s spent as a Journeyman he’s developed strong back and arm muscles, giving even more bulk to this giants frame. He shares the same straight nose and brows as his brothers as well as their tawny coloring and curly hair, also cropped short to fit under a helmet.
Personality: Motivated, Courageous, Hard Working, Realistic, Honest Stubborn, Intolerant, Inconsiderate, Controlling, Others can't be relied upon
Other: He is Ailin’s older brother. Sasar's angry with the weyrfolk, believing they're too self centered and egotistical to realize what their demands cost those who don't live in the weyr. That, with the dismal display during the first Fall and their own internal bickering and melodrama, leads him to feel like they're taking their duty lightly and don't really care about anything or anyone outside of their own walls.

Mirize had been far more concerned over passing than he would have liked to admit, and when summons came out, he was relieved. It didn't matter if it was the dead of night, or not, the only think that was important was that he had succeeded.
When it was his turn, he entered, chirping a greeting and bowing to the gold. They had been instructed on how to do this, and he was going to do it exactly as they had been instructed. He glanced down at the eggs, away from the mother, and chose an egg at random. He didn't care what was inside, any color would be good, and he picked up the egg, before backing back out of the chamber.
Quote:
Handler Name: Mirize Age: 22 Gender: Male Sexual Orientation: Homosexual Rank: Journeyman Miner History: Mirize was born at a mine-hold beholden to Benden, to a miner and his wife. He was the oldest of four children, and it was only natural that he follow his father into the mines.
He was a decent miner, and he gained journeyman status after turning 18. His specialty was working with jade, and he was sent to a jade mine in Lemos to work.
A few years later, at a gather, he ran into a visiting Wherhandler, one who had been sent to seek out new recruits. What he was talking about interested the miner, and after consulting with the master of the mine he was working at, applied to join. A wher would be of use in the mines, and Mirize felt that he could be of better use as a miner with a wher, than he was without one.
Description: Mirize stands 5'9, with pale skin, and a lean wiry build. He keeps his black hair cut short, short enough that it spikes up naturally without him having to use any sort of oil in it. His eyes are a dark blue, and almond shaped, and he has a hawk type of nose.
Personality: If there is a job to be done, be assured that Mirize will be there doing it. He doesn't trust others to get things done, and consequently, does most things alone, as he finds that that is the best way to make sure things get taken care of. He knows that he can do it, even if everything that can go wrong does, as he is willing to adapt to any situation necessary. This does lend itself to him overworking himself, as he refuses to delegate any work to others, and it is not an uncommon sight to find him in the infirmary due to that.
He is not the type of person who goes about telling their every secret to the world. In fact, unless you're a very close friend, it's unlikely that Mirize will confide even the least bit of information to you. However, despite that, he is the soul of courtesy, and enjoys being around others. After all, how are they supposed to know how amazing he is if he never spends time around them.
He is surprisingly vain for someone who works in the mines, and spends alot of effort on keeping his body neat, and his clothes nice. He adores jewelry, and tends to be dressed incredibly well when he is not working.

Egg #10, (Dark, wild), Staying at Benden
She knew that Mirize did better then her, so it wasn't a surprise that he was picking his egg first from their group. With practiced patiences, Tashio watched the first of the group to get their eggs. It was now or never for her.
She entered with a bow to the gold, keeping her eyes on the eggs. There was the one, right in front of her and Tashio picked it up. Before the gold to do anything else, the woman backed out, egg in her arms and wondering what she was going to be getting.

Egg #9, (molten, knight), Transferring to Trine
Hus was rather surprised Kesin of all people had been the first to pick what with the girls panicking during their trials. Perhaps the trainers were taking pity on her? Still the tall lanky hunter made no comment. After all this was hardly a place to start a fight though she couldn't help, but grin as the girl predictably chose the largest egg in the clutch. She'd heard of blue whers being as big as browns so Hus rather doubted size was any guarantee of color as Kesin seemed to think.
Waiting quietly along with the others the girl suddenly found it her turn to approach as she mimicked the others making a deep bow, avoiding eye contact with the queen and keeping her gaze on the eggs. Wasting little time she politely chose one from the clutch and nestling her precious package against her body backed away to join the ranks of the others who had chosen.

Egg 5, (misty, tribal), Transferring to Trine
Silion had known that he hadn't quite done as well as he would have liked but there was nothing to be done for it now. Waiting patiently and quietly as the others picked, Silion let his gaze drift over the eggs that remained and the ones that had already been taken with the barest amount of interest.
Waiting for his turn, he approached, bowed and avoided looking at the queen his eyes instead focused on the eggs. Picking one of the eggs up he backed away, holding the egg gently but firmly as he went to join the others that had already chosen.
Cesoï watched as the eggs were picked, she was growing nervous. Finally it was her turn. She walked softly keeping her gaze low as she bowed to the mother. She then softly picked up the egg she had been watching; she had faith her egg would be fun and strong. She then backed up and held the egg as she left the area.

Egg #8, (metal, swords), Staying at Benden
Lysara waited for her turn in choosing between the eggs. There were only three left by the time she got around to it, but that was okay. The one she had had eyes on was still there. Slowly she approached the nest, making sure to bow to the queen. Keeping her eyes averted Lysara picked up her egg and backed away slowly returning to stand among the others who had already chosen their egg.
Charmaine stepped on one foot and then the other as she watched the others pick their eggs. She was so excited to have been graced to receive an egg. She'd started to talk once or twice but was able to keep herself under control. now it was her turn, she practically skipped when it was her turn. With a deep bow she stared at the mother's feet, before grabbing one who seemed all by itself. She managed to slow down as she backed up hoping she didn't bump into anyone else as she went " I've got an egg!!"

# 4, Nature, spring, staying at Benden
Linea was horrified she'd done so poorly, but thrilled she had still passed and been able to select a wher egg of her own. Before entering, she mentally went through all the things she had been taught. How to greet the mother, so she wasn't mauled. To bow respectfully. She entered slowly, bowing to the wher. She avoided looking at her--which Linea found difficult.
She quickly took an egg, the closest to her, before backing away and exiting.
