An hour into the trip is when Elleth finally came across a dragon. It’s back was turned towards her and it seemed to be concentrating on something in front of it. Something nagged at her at this dragon, it was like she’d seen it before. As if finally sensing her presence the dragon lifted its head and turned to look at her. One of its eyes was missing and a mass of scar tissue surrounded it.
Elleth licked her lips and ran for it. That dragon was obviously far more experienced then she was.
She thought that she was safe when the dragon hadn’t chased after her, but that didn’t mean that she’d stop running. But eventually common sense won and she slowed down her pace. Hearing something crashing through the woods was bound to draw attention to her, and while she did want to fight a dragon it wasn’t because she lured it to her. Because knowing her luck it would bring friends.
Leaning against a tree Elleth tried to catch her breath and recall just where she’d seen that dragon before. It came to her a moment later. Eliji was a fantastic artist and she would often draw the dragons she’d seen and fought or fled from. That particular dragon was one that she’d high tailed it from, after taking its eye in what should have been a death blow. The dragon had just gotten stronger and meaner.
And…and something was breathing down the back of her neck. Elleth gave a startled scream instinctively throwing herself forward as teeth snapped down millimeters from where she’d just been. A quick glance back showed that it was the same dragon from before, only this time it seemed like it was ready to eat her. Smears of crimson and a scrap of fabric decorated its muzzle and Elleth knew just why it hadn’t taken pursuit earlier.
It had been eating someone.
Bile rose in her throat but she pushed it down, willing her feet to sprout wings so that she could out run the beast. She heard it bellow behind her but she was already gone.
