Maj huffed as he picked up his hooves to chase after the wandering almost 2 year old of his lovely twolegger. He'd been charged with taking care of her as Ehawee rested for a spell. She was well into her second pregnancy and seemed to tire more easily than with the first child. The elders had told he to take it easy and had told Maj and her husband to take good care of her. And they'd been trying. But there was so much to do. What with an energetic toddled, lots of chores and tasks, looking for a any sign of a lost member of their family, trying to figure out where Maj's own son had wandered off too lately and battle training....Maj sighed....so much to do...so much to do! So he trotted faster after the wandering toddled that was headed towards the river to play along the shore. Something she knew she was allowed to do, if she was watched. But also something she tried to do even if she wasn't.

Lyric raced through the water, her tail swishing behind her and her legs kicking gracefully. She had gotten into the habit of trying to see how far she could go along the river before she had to come up for air. She was on her way to the teepee from the beach, and wanted to make it in one breath.

Just a little bit further...Lyric pushed herself, but it was no use. She needed to come up for a quick breath.

She popped her head out of the water and drank in the air. Her lungs were rejuvenated and she was about to dive back down when something on the shore caught her attention. Several yards away, a toddler was running towards the river, and a stallion was running after her. This greatly alarmed her, for two reasons: First of all, she was afraid of the toddler running in the water, and second of all, it looked like the stallion was chasing the little girl!

Lyric's eyes widened. She was frozen in place as she tried to take in the scene.

The small toddled (who from hereafter shall be called Mansi) laughed and giggled as she ran and evaded her favorite playmate. It was a fine game to her to keep the purple and black stallion on his toes. She had great fun bouncing on his back, weaving about his legs and yanking on his tail, ears and mane. Perhaps the most fun part was all the funny looks he'd make while she did this. But he never got angry or pushed her away. Never walked away or turned his rump at her like some of the other horses in the village. Right at this moment it was a game of chase and she was enjoying it immensely. More so because she was running towards the river, a place she liked very much. It amazed her to stare and watch the water. How it moved and rippled. And all the things living in it!

She screamed with laughter as she saw the river coming close into view. She turned her head back to see if Maj was still following and then....she tripped, rolled a few feet and off a small ledge that ended in a deep pool and with a small splash landed in the water.

......

Maj watched the whole thing in shocked horror as he stopped in front of the small ledge.Never one for deep water he was hesitant to go after her. He reared and screamed in a high whinny. Frantic and unsure of what to do. He pawed at ground nervously. "Oh gods what have I done? What can I do?!"

Everything seemed to happen so fast, and before she knew it, the laughing toddler had fallen into the water. The current of the river was now pulling the girl away from her. Lyric didn't have to think twice. She swam as fast as she could to the little girl and dived under the water. She found the girl tumbling down stream, and once she was in reach, she gripped the fabric of the girl's shirt between her teeth. Keeping the girl above the water, she swam to the edge of the river and placed her gently onto the bank.

She could now see from the alarmed look on the stallions face that this girl was someone he knew, and someone he cared about. A smile pulled at Lyric's mouth. She had just saved someone's life. A warm feeling was creeping up inside of her. She looked up into the yellow eyes of the black and purple stallion and tried to calm him.

"I think...everything's okay now." Lyric gently nudged the girls cheek with her nose. "She just swallowed a little bit of water, but she should be fine....right?" She didn't know how these things worked with little two-leggers, all she could do was hope.

Maj had moved down to the more to a more useable bank and was us to his knees in the water when the a blue female kelpie popped up out of the pool Mansi had fallen into. The little girl was dangling and mostly unconscious from her mouth. Maj blinked twice Luck was on his side today! That was if the child was still alive.

As she plopped the child on the bank Maj walked up to nose her. He couldn't hear breathing so he pressed down on her little tummy. Sure enough, water began to flow out of her mouth and she began to choke. He turned the child on her side and to let her spit and sputter out the water. There was little else he could do until her little body got the water out.

He turned an eye to the blue mare while still keeping his head down near the child. Trying to comfort her. She had already begun to cry and she was still coughing up water. "The stories I've heard about your kind must have been wrong. Or you're very special. Before today I would have sworn Kelpie were a legend of the sea dwellers. Without you, little Mansi would be dead. I don't swim so well." He nosed the now fretting child who was reaching up for his mane and asking for comfort. She'd just had a very terrifying experience and wanted warmth and softness. Trusting her to hold on tight, he nosed her into a position on his neck to take her back to her father. She'd need to be checked out soon.

He walked up out of the river and toward the village. "Better come with me. The villagers and my mistress will want to thank you."

It was lucky that her companion knew to get the water out of the poor child's lungs. Lyric had never saved a child from drowning before. She could see that after he had done this, the girl began to cry and cling to him. Crying was a good sign, because it meant breathing. Everything really was okay then. Lyric was glad.

She blushed as he spoke so bluntly about her kind. It was true though; many other kelpies would have loved the opportunity to drown this child. Not that it would have needed any help. Drowning was easy; not like rescuing people. That was much harder and took much more bravery and strength than drowning someone did. Not that all Kelpies were bad, but the villagers liked to tell their tales about them.

Lyric nodded when he finished, repeating one of his words when he was done. "Mansi," she said. "That is her name?" She looked up at the child who was now resting on the stallions neck. "Well, not all Kelpies are as they say, but it is true that you should watch out for our kind." She hated to say it, but she didn't want to give them any false hope. It was just a true fact of life that not all people were good, and not all horses were good either.

"I am glad she is alright," she added. She made a mental note that if she ever had to rescue someone from the water again, that she would know to get the water out of their lungs and roll them to their side.

She began following Mansi and the stallion toward the village. She wondered what the villagers would think. "My name is Lyric," she told him as she walked beside him, head held high in attempt to hide her nervousness. She was still happy from helping the child, but meeting the villagers brought on a whole other emotion. She wasn't sure yet what it was.

Maj couldn't just turn his neck around to look at her to make sure she was following so he just assumed she'd follow. When she began to talk he was assured she wouldn't leave without making sure the child was well taken care for. He grinned at the strange turn of events for the day and plodded slowly over a small rise toward the village.

"Yes. She is called Mansi. Her mother took to calling her, her bloom during her pregnancy so a name meaning 'plucked flower' only seemed fitting." He let out a low wuffle as he remember and his own confusion as he had to decide how he felt about the whole matter of his lady being married and having a baby. Now it seemed like a silly worry. Life was much the same as it had been. Just more people for him to look after...and love he admitted grudgingly.

"It is a tad depressing to learn you are indeed a rare flower. But then you do not have the sharp teeth I have been told to watch for from your kind." He remembered some of the stories Hoto had told him about all the soquili breeds that roamed the land. "I am Majesty. Maj for short. I am very grateful that you saved my charge. I don't know what the outcome would have been if I had not brought her back safe and sound."

As they neared the village he let out a high nickering whinny as to call out Kuwahu, the girls father. He knew they'd recognize his voice.

Lyric followed on, her ears pricked for sounds, and her nostrils filling with all kinds of different scents as they neared the village.

Sharp teeth? She was very glad that she didn't have those. "That's true," she said with a smile. "My teeth are probably the same as yours. I suppose that makes a lot of difference; it changes what kinds of food I can eat."

Lyric shuddered to think what would have happened if she hadn't been swimming by. Poor Majesty would have been devastated as well. "I'm very glad I was able to help."

When they reached his village, Lyric looked around at all the hesitant faces. She only hoped that they would accept her as well as Majesty had. "Thank you, Majesty," she said quietly.

((If you wish. Whatever you wish.))

Kwahu came running almost as soon as he heard hove steps. He was pretty sure that something had happened just by Maj's return after such a brief time down by the river. Normally his daughter would have wanted to stay for hours and hours.

His breath hitched as he saw his sodden daughter sprawled across Maj's neck. She'd fallen in! He ran to grab her and check her breathing and heartbeat. Thank god she was very much alive! Just sodden and uncharacteristically sleepy. He looked up at Maj in question.

The stallion promptly turned his muzzle to point back at the kelpi female behind him and Wahu's eyes lit with interest. "Kelpi. You always manage to find the pretty ones don't you Maj." The stallion rolled his eyes at the mild teasing and watched as Wahu walked toward the kelpi. The man stuck his hand out in silent question if he could touch her muzzle. "So you saved my daughter huh?"

Lyric looked around, taking everything in. Some people wondered at her, others just smiled. Hesitantly, she turned towards Wahu's open hand. He too had accepted her, and was thankful at the safe return of his daughter. She smiled and pushed her forehead into his hand. It was warm, but not as warm as Lyric's heart felt right now. A great sense of joy had swelled up inside of her, the kind of joy that comes from helping others and from being appreciated.

"I was happy to help," she said to Majesty.

Finished if you want.

Maj smiled as she allowed his friend to touch her and genuinely seemed to enjoy it. And then had a wonderful idea, he knew that, for her deed Lyric would be rewarded with food and music but the highest reward could come from the medicine woman. So he reached over to pull on Wahu's tunic and point to the medicine woman's tent.

It took Wahu a minuet but he got it. "Come pretty mare. You shall be rewarded for your kind and courageous deed. The villagers will want to honor you, but the greatest honor shall come from the medicine woman. She can give you a blessing for a long and happy life. And she will not doubt want to check my daughter." Mansi was now sleeping soundly against her fathers shoulder so it seemed she'd survived the ordeal well enough but there was not sense in not being careful.

Wahu gestured for the two horses to follow and Mah nodded at the female. "It will not hurt and the villagers will practically worship you. From now on you will be welcome whenever you please. I hope I can consider you friend." He smiled and jerked his head toward the right tend.

If you want owo

Lyric was slowly taking everything in with a growing sense of pride and admiration for the village people. She had always been shy around people, but because of her deed, they seemed to love and accept her. She couldn't keep from smiling.

She glanced at Maj, to get some sort of confirmation about going to see the medicine woman, but this had all seemed to be his idea. She whinnied her approval and began to follow Wahu.

To Maj she replied, "Of course, friend." She smiled, but blushed at the thought of the villagers worshiping her. "Thank you for showing me your village, they have been so welcoming."

She was very excited now to be brought to the medicine woman, and she wondered what it would be like. She hoped the medicine woman would like her as much as the rest of the village seemed to. She gently nuzzled the sleeping form of little Mansi. She looked so sweet in her sleep.
