The professor was in the classroom, rather than his office; after all, the only portal to the Minipet outdoor area was located in Classroom 13... He hadn't gotten the time nor funds to build a second one in his office, which might explain why it was usually closed the past few days. He even made a sigh to hang from his office door, pointing those looking for him to 'Classroom 13'.

Beside the portal-door located at the end of the classroom, he was busy... Cooking something. It smelt sweet, and vaguely of booberrys; it was hard to tell if it was for himself, or another experiment for the minipets.

Ren was on The Hunt.

Except not for food, or for LW, or Jove, even. Instead, Ren was on the hunt for a certain minipets professor; one that he hadn't seen for quite some time, and one who was apparently not in his office when Ren had stopped by.

Now if he could only find "Classroom 13" he'd be grand.

It took Ren a good fifteen minutes to figure out the location of said classroom again (it had been too long since he had been there last), but he didn't mind the walk, and arrived ambling along the halls of Amityville with his hands tucked into his pockets and his wings fluttering lightly against his back. He reached over towards the door handle -

- he really hoped the classroom was not filled with water like it had been on occasion -

- and pushed it open, poking his head around the door. The professor in question was fiddling with something that smelled of...well, something sweet, and Ren peered towards him, taking a step inside the classroom.

"Er, Professor Malcom, sir?"

"Ah, Ren," He turned the electric cooker off, and turned to face the student with a half-smile; immediately, the sweet smell subsided, "Yes, how may I help you?" He doubted that students dropped in on their teachers just to say hi and have a cup of tea.

...the smell was suspiciously gone. What was he doing over there, anyway.

Stepping into the room, Ren closed the door behind him and slipped his hands into his pockets, standing there a tad uncertainly as he eyed the cooker with a small bit of curiosity.

"Ah...I was wondering if I could talk to you, sir," said Ren, lifting his gaze to the professor's. "About possibly, er...helping me with a few things."

Nothing Ren needs to know about.

"Oh?" He replied, raising an eyebrow as he leaned against the side of the table, blocking the student's view of whatever was on the table top. He then smiled, "I am always willing to help! What sort of things?"

Nope he really doesn't.

"Ah, well," said Ren, feeling quite awkward, despite the fact that he had voluntarily come here. He rocked back on his heels, wings fluttering against his back as he said, "I just made it to third year, you see, and I was wondering if you could possibly be...my mentor...person..."

A pause.

"...yes, well, that's basically the gist of it."

The professor paused.

"Between fire, water, air, and land, which one do you dread, and why?" He didn't give Ren a reply, but provided him with another question instead; however, he also did not say 'no' to his request; honestly, he was pretty pleased that the boil had came to ask him... He just wasn't showing it on his face.

Awkward silence was awkward.

"Er," said Ren, and poked his fingers together, contemplating the rather abrupt question briefly before responding. "Water. Air is sort of my specialty, and land is...well, land. Fire doesn't bother me too much. But water..."

His tail flicked behind him, a slightly exasperated expression on his face as he said, "Well, let's just say water and I don't really get along very well at all."

"And do you think that your fear of water might hinder you in any way?" He asked, eyeing the boil.

Ren blinked owlishly at Malcom.

"Er," he said, a bit sheepishly. "No?"

A pause.

"Maybe."

Another pause.

"Yes."

"Alright then," Malcolm replied before he moved back to his desk, pulling one of the larger drawers open. After some digging, he pulled out what appeared to be a bucket and a... Fishing net? It might be best not to ask him about how something of that length could fit into a desk drawer...

"A simple first task. Wade into the waters of the lake behind the Monster Dorms until you are submerged in water up to your waist, and then cast out the fishing net," He instructed, holding out the bucket and fishing net in Ren's direction, "Your task is to catch a Floresce from the side of the lake. Just pull up the net when you feel a tug... If you take too long, the Floresce will most likely escape."

He paused briefly, dead panning, "I'll know if you fish from the banks."

[OOC:
RP Ren going to the lake and walking in until he's waist-deep in water. And then start to roll 1d100. OuO Your magic number range is plus/minus 5 of what I rolled, so 36 - 46.

  • 01-20 : Nothing is happening. You probably look really stupid standing there with a net. Haha. Roll again!
  • 21-35 : Something is tickling your ankle... In the water... What... It's probably just some seaweed right?
  • 36-46 : You felt a tug on the fishing net! In your next post, roll a 1d10; if you got 3-7, congrats! You have pulled up a Floresce and may now return to Malcolm! (Aka please quote me <3) If not, go back to rolling 1d100.
  • 47-70 : You heard a little splash behind you, but when you turn around, you saw nothing... Odd.
  • 71-90 : Something is tickling your ankle... In the water... What... It's probably just some seaweed right?
  • 91 - 100 : You see something shiny trapped on the fishing net. Upon inspection, she realize that it's a Silver Seed! Please quote me <3 This is only redeemable once. After that: Nothing is happening. You probably look really stupid standing there with a net. Haha. Roll again!

You can have him bring a friend along. The other person can roll 1d100 in their posts to move things along, but since there's only one net, Ren will have to be the one to do the 1d10 dice roll to pull up the net.

... You can tty try to ask Malcolm along. |D ]

Ren pokerfaced at Professor Malcom.

"You want me to - what - ?" he said, aghast, a look of horror dawning on his face. He had expected the professor to be thorough in his evaluation of Ren, certainly, but this?

Ren wilted.

"...yes, sir," he mumbled, sheepishly taking the bucket and net from and slouching from the room. Perhaps he should have asked Professor Malcom to come along, but if he failed miserably, he'd really rather not do it in front of the teacher he respected the most. Ren debated calling LW or Tybalt - or even Roch, for help (or just moral support, really), but this was something he should do on his own.

Maybe.

Hopefully.

The lake loomed ahead of him, large and glittering blue black, and Ren stood on the banks, a caged expression on his face. His fingers gripped the bucket a little tighter than was necessary, and he swallowed hard, taking a single step towards the water.

"I can do this. Really."

Another step.

"It's not that bad."

Another step.

"It's just water. It can't hurt me."

Another step. He was just at the edge now, the lake lapping at the toes of his bare feet. He had taken off his shoes and rolled his pant legs up - not that it would do much, considering he had to be waist-deep, but it might keep him from running away.

It was better to just dive straight in than do it slowly, wasn't it? Just do it quick and get it over with and then he could be done. Gritting his teeth, Ren lifted his chin and squared his shoulders and then -

Splash.

"Jacking - "

The water was freezing, and Ren was as stiff as a board as he waded out. The water was knee ankle high - knee high - thigh high - and then he was submerged up to his waist and it took every ounce of self control not to run screaming out of the lake right then and there. Trying very hard to keep his breathing under control, Ren cast the net out and stood there awkwardly.

Something brushed against his ankle and he let out a very un-manly screech. It was just seaweed, wasn't it?

Wasn't it?

"WHY PROFESSOR WHY."

He hated water.

He really hated water.

Not to mention that Ren felt absurdly stupid just standing here in the icy water, lifting one hand to rub at his arms in a rather useless attempt at warming himself up. For a few brief moments he allowed himself to think longingly of his nice, warm bed up in the monster dorms -

- but then was dragged rudely back to reality when there was a sudden splash behind him. Startled, Ren jumped a little, spinning around and nearly losing his balance in the dark waters, his feet slipping on the slimy sand (gross).

There was nothing there. Ren stood there staring suspiciously around at the water, but the only ripples had been created by his own flailing. Still unconvinced, Ren flapped sodden wings and curled them against his back before he turned back to the net.

I hate water.

He called Roch anyway.

"Hey, Roch, it's Ren. I just thought I'd, you know, call and see how you were doing. I'm doing just fine, really, I mean I'm doing this mentoring session with Professor Malcom and he's really cool but he's asked me to go into the lake and well I don't like water but you know it's not that big of a deal, really - I mean, really, it's not, I have to catch this fish and well it's really okay I can do it right I mean it's just water - "

Needless to say, the voicemail was a little long and rambling, as though Ren were trying to distract himself from the fact that he was standing in waist-high water trying to catch a stupid fish and somehow catching something teeny, silver, and useless instead.

"and well I don't like water but you know it's not that big of a deal, really - I mean, really, it's not,"

Roch wasn't the brightest kid in the school--but he was pretty people smart--and when a guy said it wasn't that big of a deal, that many times--well that meant it was a seriously big deal. And he was begging for help. So what could the punk do?

Normally he would call his ghoulfriend--she could talk to fish, right? But his ghoulfriend was a traitor and liked Johnny Danger, so he wasn't going to ask her for help until she repented of the evil fangirling!

Which, y'know, probably wasn't smart--cuz it meant he was the one showing up at the lake... and sloshing in after kicking off his shoes and vest.

He turned as he heard a splash, but there was nothing there. "So... uh... what fish are we looking for?" he asked the gryphon boil.
