A day had passed since Star returned to Team Rocket with its newest trainee in tow. While his burn was doing much better and the bandage on his arm had come off, he was left feeling uncomfortably bare without his jacket. Neither his Grunt uniform or normal outfit were unmodest, but without the extra fabric billowing after him wherever he went he just felt wrong.
This was what prompted the spindly man to rap on KO's quarters in the evening, under the guise of getting his uniform tailored. The uniform in question was currently draped over his arm while he wore the form-fitting clothes KO would no doubt remember from so many years ago. He'd kept them in good repair (or rather, probably had new sets made). Right down to his questionably heeled boots.
Star sniffed and glanced up and down the hall after knocking. Seeing the Trainee accommodations was making him feel better about his Grunt quarters.

The trainee dorm he had been assigned to was... functional. That was about all there was to be said for it. Four sets of bunkbeds, metal framed and thin mattressed, and seven other men at least one of whom had only passing familiarity with personal hygiene. There were rolled up socks in a corner, and the bin was almost overflowing with empty cans and empty potato chip bags. He had a bottom bunk, below a big bruiser who shifted in his sleep a lot and didn’t seem to think much of his newest roommate. He hadn’t really met the others yet; they’d all come in very late from a training mission and then left very early, apparently to run laps outside the base as punishment for some indiscretion on said mission.
In short KO was not feeling especially cheerful when he heard the knock on the door, but he put a smile on his face anyway because he really needed to make friends here. As he was currently seated on the floor with Star’s coat draped over his legs - half way through unpicking a seam - he wasn’t really in a position to leap up and let the visitor in, but a jerk of his head to Duke covered that problem. Giving a base ‘Chuuuuu’ the electric type scrambled quickly up onto the top bunk nearest the door and then took a flying leap at the doorhandle which dropped easily under his weight, making it possible to push the door open from the outside.
“Come in, it’s open!”
Probably a visitor for one of his roommates, but with luck he’d be able to divert them into staying and talking to him rather than heading on in search of their friend.

Star arched an eyebrow at the sound of the Raichu helping with the door. Once it was open he gave it a push and stepped in, blinking at the room. His expression clearly said what he thought of the place and the fact his poor jacket had to spend any amount of time here. He'd be giving it a very thorough wash...
After scanning the cramped quarters his gaze settled on the man on the floor. "Evening."

"Oh!" KO's eyebrows raised in mild surprise. "Comman- ah, Star; I wasn't expecting to see you again so soon. I'd offer you a seat but," he gestured around, "there aren't any, and I can't vouch for the cleanliness of any of the top bunks." Star wouldn't be able to sit up straight on a bottom bunk. He couldn't sit up straight on a bottom bunk. He sighed. "You weren't kidding when you said accommodation was bad; I'd give it two stars at best, and a snide comment about the quality of the bed linen. The bathroom facilities don't even bear mentioning." He could have asked Star why he was here, but he had no doubt the spindly man would tell him before long.

"Mmm.." Star nodded in agreement with all the things KO said about the accommodations, "Fortunately I never had to endure Trainee quarters." He brushed a hand on his chest importantly, tilting his chin up. A moment passed and he remembered his reason for visiting, "I brought these for you to adjust." He held up the arm supporting his Grunt uniform, and to check on your progress with my coat."

"I imagine grunt quarters are bad enough for you to endure, given what you had to give up to come here," said KO, who was in auto-schmooze. "I hope I won't be in here too long though, I gather a couple of months or so is standard to get through the trainee phase so long as you're not a complete no-hoper. Anyway, your coat is coming along pretty well, I've worked out how I'll do it and I've found a big fabric store in Camphoreon that ought to have a good material I can use to replace the panels. I've managed to get an afternoon off tomorrow - traded a few shifts around - so I'll head out and buy it then."
Coat related updates given KO set the partially dismantled garment carefully on his bed and got to his feet to accept the uniform from Star, brushing his hand against the tall man's completely by accident. "I'll need to take your... essential measurements to adjust these of course," he said with one of his usual faintly suggestive smiles. "If we take care of that now, I can probably get these done this evening." There were indeed a few sewing machines on base, and you were indeed allowed to use them so long as they weren't being used for Rocket business, i.e. fixing ripped uniform seams by and large.

Star's eyebrow gave a telling twitch when KO mentioned Grunt quarters. He didn't say anything on the topic but it was pretty clear he wasn't pleased with his accommodations.
When KO touched his arm he pulled it back and adjusted his sleeve, frowning. He was still adjusting it when the shorter man explained he'd need to take his measurements. His up-tilted chin lowered as he considered this. "Very well.. but be quick about it. I have other things to do."

Oooh yes, Commandant Sparkle was not happy in the least; it gave him a lovely warm fuzzy glow inside to see those impressive brows twitch like that. He gave a winning grin and set the uniform down on his bed next to the coat. "I'll get started right away," he said, heading over to the locker that contained his personal effects and opening it to fish out his tape measure along with a little leather-bound note book and a mechanical pencil.
"We can't rush these things though Star," he went on as he walked back over to the far taller man, "after all if I get a measurement wrong your uniform could end up fitting you as badly as before and that would be no good for you, or for the rest of us that like to look at you! All the same," he unrolled the tape and flicked and eyebrow with a smirk, "I'll be as quick as I can while being sure I'm... thorough. Now then, where shall we start?"

Star watched KO move around the room with narrowed eyes. He didn't like the red-head's evaluating expression. He folded his arms, shifting his weight from one hip to the other. "You'll only be as thorough as is necessary. This is tailoring; not a date."

"Oh I know Commander, to my eternal disappointment, believe me," KO replied with a martyred sigh, noting and enjoying the effect he was having on his superior officer.
"I think we'll start with your legs,” he went on smoothly after a moment, “it's hard to decide on your best feature of course, but they might just clinch it." KO knelt down in front of Star and looked up at him with a little grin, drawing the tape measure between his hands slowly. "You know, to get the very most accurate measurements I should really have you in your underwear."

Star blinked slowly as KO described his legs as an asset. He couldn't disagree...
He dropped his folded arms, resting one hand on his hip as he looked down at the other man. He enjoyed staring down his nose at people and KO being stooped at his feet made that even easier than usual. The spindly Rocket looked just about to start enjoying the red-head's compliments when underwear came up and his arching eyebrow flattened into a furrowed brow. "Be quiet. I asked you to make alterations, not speak."

Oh, he did like to order others about, didn’t he? He still acted as though he was head of that old department of his, no flexibility, no understanding of how to operate when you were basically a nobody. Still, he could tolerate Star’s manner, and it wasn’t his problem if the arrogant attitude caused problems for the once important man.
“Easy, Commander, it was a statement of innocent fact! You’ve already made it quite clear that this isn’t a date, and I’ll just have to accept that.” KO looked slightly sly as he said this but, well, KO usually looked either sly, smug, or some combination of the above. Still with that smirky little smile on his lips he lent back a bit and cocked his head. “Well I can work around the clothes, I suppose, but you will have to take the boots off for me to get your leg measurements Star.... They really are fantastic boots you know, I’ve not had a chance to inspect them at close range before.”

Star eyed KO with a look that clearly said he was trying to sort out whether or not he was being insulted. Comments directed at his boots were usually rude. It wasn't always easy to pick out the genuine compliments. After a moment of consideration he decided to take it as a compliment. KO did have a sense of fashion, after all. The smirking red-head would know perfect footwear when he saw it.
"Mmm.." He hummed in a tone of agreement, still annoyed with KO's general attitude. It was hard to decide how exactly he felt about the other man. That smirk and the jokes certainly weren't appreciated. KO maintained a constant air of knowing something Star didn't. It was grating on his nerves. However, the ex-Galactic was comfortable addressing him by the name he preferred without any hint of mockery. And he'd warmed up to being called Commander again, since he'd decided KO was doing it out of habit. He liked to think someone would view him as Commander Star regardless of rank.
But that smirk...
Realizing he'd settled KO with an evaluating squint for too long, he resumed speaking, "They are nice. The fact you recognize them as such speaks well to your taste..." He sighed and stooped to unzip each boot and slide them off, revealing black socks underneath. "These are the only articles of clothing I'll be removing tonight. Get on with it."

"Thank you Star, always nice to hear things like that from another man of good taste," KO purred, running his tape measure through his hands again and placing the end of the tape measure on Star's hip. With his fingers resting against the leggy man KO did not wink suggestively, but maybe he smiled just a little bit more. "Hold that there would you please Commander? Your legs are too long for me to reach from here all the way down to the floor."
