It wasn’t often that Remarque did something too different from his schedule; gathering energy usually took place in nefarious corners of Destiny City or in the shadows of the park. Sometimes he grew bored, however, and traveled into areas he didn’t venture even when he was powered down. The weather was nice; a cool breeze kept him at a good temperature, and the clouds that rolled over the moon helped keep him from being so obvious. There were enough lamps that he could see where he was going at yet still avoid the light if he wanted.
He had started by walking along the outskirts of the park, and from there ended up following a little road he’d passed many times but never wandered down. It didn’t seem like anything special—just a handful of somewhat aged stores that looked like they’d seen better days. It seemed to be smack-dab in the middle of plenty of areas, however Remarque could find nothing interesting, himself. Strolling down the street and looking into the darkened windows, Remarque found his interest quickly slipping. This might have been an interesting place in the daytime, but it was a little creepy and mostly very boring at present.
Remarque was considering heading back to the park after a few wasted moment of analyzing the architecture and signs on the poorly attended buildings when he felt the faint trace of some aura nearby—and it was beckoning him like a spotlight.
It didn’t seem too far off, and given that his options for the evening consisted of wandering back to the park or heading home, Remarque was pleased to have this alternative. He started off towards the energy source without any heed; even if it was an order senshi, this place was giving him the creeps and he was looking forward to some sort of social interaction.

Even familiar places were a little creepy after dark. What light there was played tricks, and while in her civilian life, Sailor Subamara was no stranger to running home late through darkened streets, it was somehow different when she was supposed to be hunting the things that she'd previously run from. Her fuku gave her many advantages, but it didn't seem to actually increase her courage, and that was a problem because she definitely didn't want to let the good guys down.
Unsure of the city's numerous alleys, the newbie senshi had decided to patrol the shops, and now lingered under a street light beside an old building that was, in daylight, her favourite card place. The window display was mostly board games, and a few puzzles, but she could dimly see the neat rows of shiny and rare cards under the glass. It wasn't open, of course, but that was okay because she didn't actually have any money to spend. In the gloom, the monster cards seemed to have a life of their own, but they weren't that scary. She could see their element in the corner, their name, power levels, everything. As soon as they were in play, you could see what to use against them. Being a senshi wasn't like that. Her element was coffee, so she should totally fight ...cookie monsters or something. Senshidom just wasn't as logical as she'd hoped.
Distracted by her thoughts, she was slow to notice the nearby aura that darkened the edges of her awareness. By the time she glanced around, it was so strong it seemed to come from everywhere, but though she peered into the shadows, no youma presented itself. More frightening than monsters, the sensation of an unseen something, closing in.
"I can see you!" she lied to the night.

Though Remarque had been aware that there was someone was in the area, he hadn’t been aware of just how close she was until he heard her speaking. And he couldn’t see her, so how the hell could she—
Oh. She must have been bluffing. He refused to believe that anyone could actually have gotten the jump on him. Focusing on her aura, Remarque decided he wanted to find this girl.
Jett took a slight detour, rather interested in confronting this senshi who could see through walls, and though he only had to walk through a very short alleyway to reach her, he was rather pleased to be coming up behind her. “Is that so? Do you have eyes in the back of your head?” he prompted, seeming rather conversational despite the situation. He'd already deciding he was amused with this senshi; she had the option of creeping through the darkness, trying to sneak up on him, but instead she’d opted to announce her presence to the world?
Well, that was bound to make her interesting. Not that Remarque would admit it, but he was more than pleased that she hadn’t taken the ‘let me sneak up on you’ route; with as eerie as this place was, he was just a little one edge. Not that a big, strong man like Remarque was going to admit such a thing, but now that he wasn’t perusing the shadows all by his lonesome he was feeling far more optimistic about being in the area regardless of how creepy it seemed.

Scarier than unseen monsters, forces of dark energy suddenly right behind you.
Peering so intently into the darkness in front of her, Subamara was completely unprepared for being called out from behind. When the voice came, she nearly jolted out of her skin, spinning around and tottering backwards, away, her hand jumping unconsciously to clutch at her brooch. She managed to stifle the scream, but it was a near thing.
Caught in her horror-movie moment, she couldn’t even see the owner of the voice at first, and remained staring blankly at the shop window for a moment before she even registered the little alleyway, the dimly seen figure lurking there. The man was dark in the shadows, maybe wearing black – a clue she should probably have attended to – but she could just make out the swirling patterns on his costume, and the glint of a circlet at his forehead. Human-shaped, fuku’d and tiara’d. She breathed a sigh of relief, dropping her hand back to her side.
“Oh geez, you scared me! I thought you were a youma!”

Remarque raised a brow; her reaction was far better than he could have expected, and he glowed with amusement. Until she confessed to mistaking him for a youma, in which case he nearly scowled as he stepped nearer to her. His movement wasn’t threatening, however he figured he might not be mistaken for some grotesque monster if he wasn’t masked by the shadows.
“…Yeah, no. No youma, just me,” he pointed out, hands moving to rest on his hips as he gave the Senshi a look over. He wasn’t judging her for being jumpy; this place seemed like the sort of place a deranged serial murderer might be hanging out, waiting to snag his unsuspecting victim and cart them off to his secret torture chamber.
Not that Remarque had considered any of that while traversing the area.
“Remarque,” he introduced, taking a few more casual steps forward and extending a hand to the Senshi. “Dark Mirror Senshi of Puppetry.”
He hadn’t wanted to give her the impression of hostility, so attempted to don one of his more charming smiles during his introduction. “—But if you’d rather a youma, I can leave you be and let you find one on your own.”

"Remarque dark mirror," she repeated, letting the sort-of rhyme fix her new acquaintance's name in her mind as she accepted the offered hand without hesitation. If she'd heard the term Dark Mirror before, the significance didn't register. Such long titles they all had, she thought, and he hadn't even said the Sailor part.
She couldn't help but smile back. The street seemed momentarily brightened, until he threatened to leave again. It should have been funny, it seemed like teasing, but Subamara could feel the darkness like a tightening knot in her stomach and she hadn't felt alone until there was someone to leave her alone. It really was too creepy here.
"No no, stay!" she said, a little too quickly. "I'm sorry, I'm not real good at the aura thing yet. Or the fighting thing," she admitted. "It's way nicer to meet people than monsters. I'm Subamara, Senshi of Coffee! Pleased to meet you!"

Subamara's enthusiasm in him staying was amusing enough that he simply couldn't just leave her there on her own. "Coffee, hm?" he prompted, nodding affirmatively. "I like it. You seem like the sort of person I'd like to keep around."
And with all the coffee he'd been hopped up on lately? They needed to convert Subamara to the Dark Mirror Court as soon as possible. "It's a pleasure to meet you, too."
He could understand her preference for humans more so than youma; he might have been an ally of the Negaverse, but even now he still didn't much like the creatures. "You know, the youma don't bother you much if you're a Dark Mirror Senshi," he noted. "Naturally, if you wanted them to leave you alone, I'd offer you invitation into the Court. Contrary to what whispers I've heard, we're not as bad a bunch as they paint us out to be."

Subamara preened at the positive response her sphere got, mentally upgrading Remarque from 'acquaintance' to 'new friend and person to get coffee with'. She really needed to get a handle on the aura thing, she thought, or she'd miss out on meeting too many awesome people like him. She couldn't go around getting scared of every shadow, even if they were in the middle of Creepy Street. She glanced around again at the empty shops, rubbing a gloved hand over her bare arms, smoothing goosebumps. "You can make youma leave you alone? Wait, you have a court? That is so cool!" So Dark Mirror wasn't his name, she realised, it must be some kind of team or higher level or something. It seemed kind of rude to say she hadn't heard of it, though. It sounded like there was some gossip out there she was missing, and she wasn’t sure how to find out more without coming off like a completely clueless idiot. "That's really nice of you, but I don't think I'm important enough to invite to a court. No ballgown," she joked. There were maybe a few too many Disney movies colouring her mental image. She sighed. "And anyway, I think I'm supposed to fight the youma. Unless you can make them leave everybody else alone, too? Like, all the normal people?" she asked, looking up at him hopefully.

Remarque quirked a brow as politely as he could manage; there was no argument, no defense that of course the Dark Mirror Court was bad news and ought not to be trifled with.
Which was great news for him.
"It's a work in progress," he lied; to be honest, he detested youma. He had since the second he became aware of their existence, and if he'd had his say in it, they'd have been eradicated long ago. Alas, the Negaverse's ties to them made it difficult, and while he wished he could rid Destiny City of the things, he wasn't certain he could do such without attracting too much attention.
He suspected such actions would not be rewarded.
"I confess, I've had to rough up a few youma. I don't like them, I think they're filthy monsters and if the Negaverse wanted to get things done, they should do so in a more refined manner. Still, I suppose I can't complain. They are desperate to protect this world and have yet to find a suitable replacement." He shrugged, attempting to dismiss the topic. "Ball gown or not, though, you're still invited. Fancy dress isn't exactly required, though you certainly wouldn't be punished for dressing up. A lot of interesting things to do. A lot of freedom. Plus, Mirrorwalking is an interesting perk. Tell me—are you happy with where you are in the White Moon?"

Subamara nodded energetically, giving the more experienced senshi her full attention. She was eager to hear his youma-roughing techniques, if he was at all inclined to share. Those things were scary, and even if her coffee-power wasn’t going to compare very well to puppet-magic, she was optimistic that Remarque would know some tricks that she could make use of. Obviously he knew a lot more than she did, she could learn a lot. But focusing as she was, the shift in tone didn't go unnoticed. Protect? She couldn’t have heard that right. Or it was a joke, maybe? If the Negaverse wanted to protect the world, it should maybe stop trying to kill people. Rather than let it go as he tried to move on, she frowned, setting her hands on her hips. “Don’t tease just because I’m new,” she scolded. “I do know who the Negaverse is.” Sadly, though, that was about all she knew. She sighed, letting her hands drop back to her sides and looking up to the sky for the moon in question. “Where I am? Well, I could do without the dark alley. But what’s mirror-walking?” she asked, giving up completely on not sounding like a noob. He could think what he liked of her, but he had good information and it was pretty clear she needed to know more if she was going to do her job properly.

Remarque tilted his head, mildly perplexed with her response. He hadn't thought his question to be so difficult, though her answer provided him with a mildly amusing—albeit entirely unhelpful—response. "I'm not teasing you," he said only, though didn't dwell on the matter. "Take what you will from what I say. As for mirror walking," he shrugged.
"The Court I am from—the Dark Mirror Court—has the ability to step into one mirror and out another. It makes travelling long distances delightful. Just one of the many perks that comes from working under Ares," he shrugged. It was a great perk; he had no issue bragging about it. If she didn't find out what they could do from him, she would from someone else, so it wasn't as though it were exceptionally private or secret information.
Besides—the White Moon couldn't do it. Was that not proof enough that the Dark Mirror Senshi were the good guys? By all that was fair and just in the universe, was that not evidence enough that the Dark Mirror Court was the better choice—the right choice? They had access to powers the White Moon Senshi could never obtain on their own.
Because the White Moon was on the wrong path. He just needed Subamara to see that—needed to save her from the White Moon before it destroyed her. Or before he had to.

Subamara’s eyes widened, now thoroughly impressed. He sounded pretty sincere that he wasn’t teasing, so she took him at his word. Was that how he’d come up behind her? “Whoa. Seriously? Like Alice in the looking-glass. But I thought you said your sphere was puppets?” She’d never heard of anything like it before. The concept was fascinating, and it would be really useful - like teleportation - but more than a little horror-movie. What if he got lost? What if he got stuck? She shot a glance to the darkened shop windows around them, cold glass shielding dim shelves and stock. She could see her pale face and bright white bodice reflected back at her, but Remarque’s darker uniform barely showed up at all, glints of gold and green in shadow. “Is it weird on the inside, in a mirror? Is it backwards?” she asked, feeling out the idea. His ‘court’ must be ninja central, if they could all do that.

Remarque was not phased by the questions; he found himself rather bemused by them. Her interest meant that there was hope for her, so if he could keep the appeal of the Dark Mirror Court flowing, maybe they could make a Dark Mirror Senshi of her yet.
"I am the senshi of puppetry," he affirmed, "Though my alignment gives me the additional perks. Inside the mirror is…" he paused, and then seemed thoughtful. "It is different. Interesting. Nothing is backwards, but it is certainly a realm of its own. One day, perhaps if such interests you, I could show you. Though it is late enough now that I wouldn't want to risk taking you and losing track of time in there."
He waved his hand nonchalantly, figuring it would give her time to build up some anticipation. Even if she did seem innocent enough, he wasn't entirely keen to put everything the Dark Mirror Court had on display so quickly.

“Uh wow, really?” she said, taken aback by the offer. It was really nice of him, but Subamara wasn’t sure what she’d done to merit so many weird invitations. Courts and mirrors and stuff – it all seemed awfully… fancy for someone as new as she was. She didn’t remember the guardian cat mentioning any of this when she got her pen. Then, she’d been pretty sick after, so maybe she’d just forgotten. There was just so much more to magic than she’d imagined. But obviously now was not a good time, she completely understood – it was scary and dark… and she’d probably held him up enough already with her silly questions! “Sure, maybe one day! I wouldn’t want to impose.” “Besides, I think there might still be a youma about?” she asked tentatively, hoping the more experienced senshi wasn’t going to laugh at her if she was wrong. There was still an unspecified aura nearby pinging as wrong wrong wrong. Or maybe it was just the scenery, spooking her out. “So I should go look into that. Wanna come with?” Which, realistically, meant ‘please kill it for me while I take notes’. Still, you never knew until you asked. She extended a friendly, hopeful hand. Kyuseisha no Hikari I am extremely unbelievably sorry.

Remarque was sure 'one day' wasn't going to come soon enough, though he smiled all the same. 'One day' was better than no.
He eyed the hand, debating on whether or not he should really accept, but it didn't take long for the idea to win him over.
He hated youma. Maybe he wasn't supposed to; maybe he was just supposed to trust that the Negaverse had everything under control…but why pass up the offer? Who was going to miss one little youma, anyway? Plus, it couldn't hurt his chances of winning over Subamara. He extended his own hand to take hers. "I doubt you could ever impose, Subamara. I'll leave the offer open should you ever like to take a trip, but for now we can go find that youma and give it a little hell."
