Deryk was making his way away from the life labs now that the stitches from his face were removed. There was still a notable scar there, and most likely it was one that wouldn't go away anytime soon. His hand, though, was still bandaged up, being a more serious injury than the cut to his face.
It wasn't bandaged up into a fist any longer, however. When they were last changed, the bandages were replaced in a way that made the rest of his fingers usable. However, it also made the lack of the one digit pretty obvious for anyone who was looking.
It made the trainee a little self conscious about it. And unfortunately, he didn't have a pocket to shove his hand into.
So instead, as he was making his way to go get some coffee, he just held onto his left hand to try and mask the injury.

Ariane hadn't seen Deryk since they returned from the trip to Chicago over the weekend - it had been pretty enjoyable, a much needed vacation after all that they had been through thanks to the events leading up to the whole destruction of the Four Clans thing. Even after the islands were destroyed, they were as busy as ever; the trip was her first real break since last Christmas.
However, as much as she wanted to say that they should 'do it again soon', she knew that they weren't going to get another vacation until forever later, which was just downright depressing.
Sighing, she looked up and spotted the (rather nice) back view of a most familiar figure in front of her. With a grin, she came up behind him, and gave his butt a light pet, "Hey hey Deryk, been a while." As she tilted her head up to look at him, however, she didn't take long to notice the scar on his face... And it looked rather fresh too.
"What happened to you?" She asked, frowning; with her attention on his face, she had yet to notice his hand.

Deryk jumped as he suddenly felt someone patting him on the butt. He pretty much knew who that was right away. There weren't any others around here that would do that. Turning around, he grinned a bit nervously at her before moving his hands to behind his back.
"Oh. H-hey Ariane!" he greeted before frowning as she asked what happened to him. Right. The scar.
"Uh... lost a fight while patrolling the Haunted House.." he said. It was the quickest way to explain what happened there.

"I see," She narrowed her eyes, squinting at his face before leaning away, patting him on his back with a nod of almost-approval, "It's a good addition to your scar collection. Most people seem to get at least one or two by the time they move up to Intermediate... Who did you run into in the Haunted House anyway?"

"Ehehehe... Right. Scar collection," Deryk said with a sheepish grin. He soon furrowed his brow as she asked who he had run into.
"Was a plague doctor. Don't know its name. Couldn't tell if male or female. Just kinda been calling it Malfatto. That uh... was the name of a similar character from a game. Sort of reminded me of him," he recalled as his frown deepened.
"It... was really angry at me. Let's just put it that way."

"Plague doctor?" She raised an eyebrow, stroking her chin with a thoughtful look, "Why was it angry at you though? You don't seem like the type to provoke anyone... Halloween or not."
Now that she was no longer staring at his face scar, he realized that he had been keeping his arms behind his back; while she would normally not find body posture suspicious, Deryk usually walked... Normally? And this was not normal for him. Besides, that was the position people usually took when they were trying to hide something from the person they were talking to - according to movies and shows anyway.
Except she was sure that Deryk wasn't holding a bouquet of flowers behind his back.
"Hey, let me see your hands," She held out her hand, frowning at the male, "Both your hands." In case he tried to be funny.

"I... don't really know. It said I took 'her away'. Someone close to it must have been killed or weaponized at some point I guess. Didn't provoke it but.. it was just.. really vengeful?" he frowned. Deryk had tried to get it to calm down but that didn't happen at all.
"Revenge is never pretty.. 'least according to movies and stuff."
After letting out a sigh, the trainee's eyes widened as Ariane practically ordered to see his hands. He bit his lower lip nervously, shifting in place before slowly bringing his hands out from behind his back and placed them into hers. As he did this, his gaze averted to the side.

"It's a war," She looked away for a bit, shrugging, "There are bound to be... Losses." Even those who had just signed up for the war, and never got the chance to fight in it, were not spared, "Not pretty at all, but then again, if you use movies as a comparison, revenge is supposed to make your life worse than it already is. Blah blah blah, the person seeking revenge almost always loses."
She took his hand, examining the bandage; it was hard to tell what sort of injuries were under it, but there was one very obvious damage - he was missing a finger. His ring finger, no less.
"This means if someone likes it, they can't put a ring on it?" She raised an eyebrow, holding up his hand so that his palm was facing away from them, "Does it still hurt?"

"Yeah I know. I know. Can't say I don't blame it though. People.. they always get angry at the soldiers on the other side. No matter where you go," Deryk murmured before shaking his head to himself. Glancing back down at his hand, he nodded lightly.
"A little yeah. Flexing hand hurts still. Can't grip things too tightly at the moment. Probably be a little longer before that goes away completely. My guess at least. Finger definitely won't be regenerating or whatever though."

"Easier to be angry at the people on the other side than the ones who started the war," She answered, and then put her fingers over his, slowly pushing down, "At least it's just a finger... Rather than all the finger or the whole hand. Didn't know that plague doctors could slice fingers off though." She was trying to cheer him up with the power of optimism.
"You're a right or left hander?" She asked, letting his hand go now that she had accessed the damage, "And hey, at least your weapon doesn't require you to grip it."

"..Do we even know who started it? Like. Really really? Who made the first strike?" Deryk frowned. It was too easy to point fingers on that regard. Either side could have easily been the culprit as far as that went.
"Yeah. Just a finger. Still sucks though. And er.. well. Its tail had a blade on it. It used it like a knife. And uh. Right handed but yeah. Don't need to grip weapon."
Looking over the area where his finger used to be, he soon gave a sort of nervous grin.
"Kinda funny actually. Original character from Assassin's creed was missing the same finger. Had to have it cut off to use the weapon."

"Have you attended the Excalibur lecture?" She asked, giving a shrug as she stroked her chin, "Pretty sure all trainees had to go through that, but according to it, they sort of started it. Doesn't really matter now. Just believe that we're on the right side, and you can't go wrong."
At the random piece of information, she laughed, whacking him on his back with a grin, "Oh? Hey, you're living the game, huh? What happens at the end of that game?" Not like she was going to play it anytime soon, so she didn't mind spoilers.

"Excalibur lecture? Er.. no. But what's this about Excalibur. Like. King Arthur stuff?" Deryk blinked. If that was the case, this had been going on for a hell of a long time. Things get skewed with history. But.. Ariane had a point there. He just needed to believe they were on the right side, doing the right things.
The latter part had been a little tough to do at times.
"Well sorta. In a way. And um.. well. As far as Altair goes, his leader turned out to be corrupt and he had to kill him to keep him from abusing the power of a special artifact called a piece of Eden," Deryk recalled.
There was more to it than just that, seeing how it wasn't just dealing with Altair.

"Yeah, like King Arthur stuff," She replied, slightly surprised that they were required to go through it at some point, "Did you know that we have the sword Excalibur in the facility? And Merlin too, in the form of a staff... Apparently he was a wizard, which made him a reaper rather than a human. I can't remember all the details, but the magic that turned Excalibur into a weapon was devised by Merlin, for their war... Humans - King Arthur - was just a chess piece for Merlin."
She raised an eyebow at Deryk, and then started to laugh. Leaning in, she lowered her voice, "Does this mean you'll end up having to kill Caelius to save us all?"

Woah. They had the sword, Excalibur? Here? That was pretty wild. And the whole idea regarding Merlin too. But... it sounded weird. The war wasn't even humans vs them to begin with then. He wasn't sure what to make of that.
"Huh. Weird," he blinked before tensing a bit, looking around to make sure no one had heard that. Even if it were a joke, he had a feeling that if Cael somehow heard that tidbit, he'd have his head on a stick right about now.
"Ehehe... hopefully it won't come to that. Think.. he might be a bit outta my league. But that isn't how it went for other characters. Ezio eventually got to a point where he started up a brotherhood of assassins of his own to combat the templars."
He didn't know anything about the third main Assassin in the series yet, Connor.
