User ImageFaendal's luck hadn't been very good recently. His usual haunts had provided him with little to eat, and he was too proud to actually approach a human for food. His ears cocked back in irritation, he pondered the unlikely set of events- one wasteful human wasn't around at all, the butcher seemed to be disposing of his scraps differently, the restaurant had caught sight of him last time.

He sighed, a small hiss of irritation, as he got up and walked along the wall, leaping with practised ease to the next, continuing along. He had to try somewhere new- even though it meant going out of "his territory", and possibly into that of another loner who might take offence at a fellow thief raiding their best food spots. Still, it was only a temporary measure, he was sure.

He leaped down from the wall; his paws light on the cement, he sprinted across the nearby road and through the nearest garden. Scaling the fence, his light body barely slowed him and he balanced there, his nose high and scenting the wind.

What was that?

He licked his nose with his rough tongue, damping it and heightening his sense of smell. He was sure now- there was something, not meat and not fish, but food none the less. He carefully dropped down the other side of the fence, following his nose more literally now. Sneaking through the back alley, he wound his way with caution until the source of the scent was before him.

((Since the bakery is your idea, and you probably have more of an idea what it looks like... Let me know if there's a back fence, etc. xP ))

Mini wove through Anna's legs with grace and speed as her keeper moved around the bakery, preparing to go out for lunch. Anna reached into one of the cases that she stored the treats they baked in. She pulled out some of the piggies-in-a-blanket she had made especially for Mini. Then she grabbed the clay bowl painted in greens and blues to match neko to put the freshly baked treats in. "Here you go Mini. You'll be fine guarding the shop while I'm out?"

Mini nodded and smiled up at Anna. "Of course I can. I'm not a kitten anymore. Would it be alright for me to take a few more baked treats from the case if I'm still hungry?" She didn't want to just take without asking. It wasn't her style and she'd had to possibly disappoint Anna.

"Of course you can. Take care now. Help any customers that come in." Anna grabbed her black purse, pet Mini really fast behind the ears, and was out the door.

Mini padded over to the door to make sure the open sign was still on. After she had grown up, no longer a kitten, Anna had let her take on more responsibility. She smiled to herself before delicately sniffing the food left for her. It smelled quite heavenly. She picked one up with her teeth and chewed on it slowly, savoring the taste that burst into her mouth. Ever the careful one, she had an eye on the front door in case someone came in while she was eating.

((There is no back fence, just an alley behind it.))

The back door was open; no fence, nothing in his way. A quick scan of the area told Faendal that there was nobody watching and he flew to the door and flattened himself against the wall next to the opening.
Stealing like this was risky, and it set his heart racing and adrenaline surging through his veins. The sensation wasn't very pleasant- although after a successful theft, it made the food much tastier. Still, he preferred thefts fraught with a little less risk, and a higher chance of pay-off. His stomach wouldn't allow him to pass up this chance, however.

He peered around the door, showing only the top of his head; bright blue eyes and ears swivelling for the slightest sound. The hum of machinery spoiled his senses and the tip of his short tail flicked in irritation. Still, the scent of food was even stronger; fresh, and sweet, and with an undercurrent of something better, more familiar.
Still, he wouldn't count his blessings until he was away, and safe, and had a full belly.

Unable to see anyone from his vantage, Faendal bolted through the door and under the nearest- whatever it was. Machinery or furniture didn't matter to the stray; all he knew was that it was a safe haven, with space to fit under and a better view than the door.
It didn't sound as though any human had spotted his dash- no sounds of humans at all. He edged back towards the boundary of his shadowy safe spot, so he could see better; and surveyed the area.

((Maybe I should've had you draw a map before we started! xD What is where, and what would he see?))

Mini was thoroughly enjoying the food that Anna had left for her. She was enjoying it so much that she had not heard the whisper of paws coming through the back door, going through the kitchen. Considering that she was also facing the front door, she also had not seen anything of concern. Of course, the wooden stand that the cash register was on was directly behind her and offered no view underneath it. The big cases that held the baked treats were on either side of the register and they too didn't offer any view into the kitchen.

She honestly felt that there was nothing to worry about. Any humans trying to steal from them would have to open the cases and the doors to them were slightly squeaky while sliding open. There seemed to be no one coming at this lunch hour through the front too. It wasn't a surprise. Sweet baked treats were not ideal for lunch on a work day.

Faendal gave his heart a few moments to calm in his chest. There were no signs of movement; and step by cautious step he emerged from underneath the shelves, his eyes searching for any sign of movement, his ears swivelling and his muscles tensed, ready for him to bolt at the first sign of trouble. He seldom ventured into buildings to steal, but it would appear- from surveying the area- that he was either going to have to climb the furniture to try to find food, or go through the doorway into the next room.
Neither idea gave him much comfort, but his quivering nose picked up that familiar scent mixed in with all the rest of this place. There was surely something better in the next room. Of course, there was also a higher risk of getting caught- but his stomach reminded him that that was a daily risk, and the penalty for it was not as bad as going without food at all.

Still fully alert and staying low to the ground, Faendal slipped from shadow to shadow, reaching the door before slipping through. There was a short... wall-fence-thing in front of him, and it appeared he had two choices- incautiously scale the weird thing and see what was on top, and more importantly over it; or peer around the side. A much more cautious option- he could check the top of the weird wall once he'd ensured that there really wasn't anyone here. He still hadn't heard anything- but the sounds of machinery from the next room, the hum of electronics in this one, worked together to make it difficult to be sure.

He slunk to the end of the weird... separator... wall... thing why the hell did the humans build this inside anyway. One ear flicked in irritation; staying low and slipping around the edge of this ridiculous structure seemingly designed to make his theft harder. Peering around it, he was genuinely surprised to see a smaller, younger female with light patterned fur, her back to him; quite clearly eating something.
A startled sound, a quiet strangled meow formed in the back of his throat despite his caution. Of course, if she was a fellow thief, she wouldn't be a dangerous one- she was too young, too small to pose a real threat in a fight- but perhaps she wasn't territorial enough for that to be a concern. Normally he wouldn't test that- but his hunger stopped Faendal from immediately bolting.

Mini had paused in her eating to clean her whiskers a little. Then she looked up at the cases, wondering if she should go grab anything else from it. The door to the cases were not fully closed so that she could easily push it open with her own paw. Ever since she had materialized from her figurine, Anna had gone ahead and made a lot of changes to the bakery to accommodate her. Mini felt a little bad about that though. She didn't want to be a burden but it was very nice of her keeper. She felt very lucky herself to have been brought here. Of course, Anna's parents hadn't been too happy but business had been doing much better since she arrived. A lot of children loved to eat and play with her.

In the end, she decided it best to finish the food she already had in her bowl before going for more food. She didn't want to waste anything in case she got full. Leaving no food to waste would be a good way to show her appreciation for all the hard work that Anna did. Again, in the same delicate manner, she picked up one of the morsels and slowly munched on it. The smell of the sausage filled the bakery. It was mid chew that she heard some kind of strangled sound. She quickly swallowed the food in her mouth, nearly choking, and whipped her head around to look in the direction the sound came from. It had been near the case and not entirely a human sound, so she ruled out any kids.

Curious, she slowly padded over to the case, not bothering to slink or anything since she felt there was no reason to. This was her keeper's bakery and thus she belonged here. Mini peeked behind the case and her eyes widened as she came upon another neko. "Oh hello. Did you come here to eat?" From the looks of it, she thought he may be here for not so noble reasons. She plastered a smile on her face and stared straight into his eyes, waiting for an answer.

Faendal had half-considered backing off and fleeing when the female approached- more than half, actually. But she hardly appeared hostile- almost the opposite, really- and her approach was very different to his cautious slinking from shadow to cover. She looked healthy and well-fed, so almost certainly not a stray.
It would appear that he had wandered into another Maneki Neko's personal territory. The smell of food hung in the air even stronger than before; his stomach reminded him of his mission with an unhappy little gurgle, and he had to work to stop drool from escaping his mouth.

He was almost as taken aback by her question as by his initial sighting of her. Faendal's tufted ears flicked in confusion, trying to work it out. He was an invader- but she was talking to him, and acting, as though they were fellows who had happened to find enough food for them both.
"I uh. Yes." Honesty seemed the best policy here. "I, ahah, I wasn't intending to intrude, though. Or, well, not intrude on anyone's... privacy?" He pulled a face and his small tail flicked back and forth in irritation. How on earth was one supposed to handle a situation like this?!

Well. He decided to try more honesty. She seemed like she may be sympathetic, although he didn't want to abuse that; and nor did he want her to pity him. He spoke quite matter-of-factly about his situation.
"It's not my... Preferred method of getting food, but uh. Honestly, I was starting to run out of options." He tried to keep his pale blue eyes on her brighter ones, instead of staring at the food, or looking around for more. Even though his stomach tried to urge him to focus on only the food, his mind and manners reminded him to focus on the current situation- especially given the impact it could have on the immediate future.

Mini's plastered smile quickly turned into a real smile. For some reason, it amused her that an older Maneki Neko was being made uncomfortable by little her. He must have experience in sneaking around since she had not heard him till he had been nearly on top of her. That would have been bad. However, she did feel for him. He seemed to be quite hungry while she was here enjoying a very tasty meal. He pretty much admitted that the food is why he was here. Planning to take food for himself she supposed, without permission.

Her tail flicked back and forth as she thought about it. "I'll share some of my food with you." As long as he left before Anna came back. There was no need for her to be greedy and kick him out. "You're not intruding. This is my keepers bakery but it is open to customers. We turn none away. Well, except for that one crazy lady that called my Anna the devil." Mini frowned at that memory. Anna had gotten very mad that day and even Mini had been afraid to approach her.

She quickly banished such bad thoughts. Her attention went back to the neko before her. "Don't you have a keeper?" She liked small talk and was curious about him. Never before had she seen a lone neko with no human to accompany them or feed them at the very least. She stood on her hind legs to push the door to the case open with her front paws. Then she leaped into the case to push out several pieces of baked treats that had meat inside. There was one that Anna baked with bits of bacon and cheese that Mini liked a lot. She figured this male one would like it too. "By the way, what's your name?" He should at least identify himself since he had been caught sneaking around.

"A... keeper?" Faendal's nose wrinkled at her choice of words. Whilst the idea of having a steady supply of food, and constant access to a comfortable place to sleep, had a strong appeal to him, he certainly didn't want a "keeper". But perhaps it was just an unfortunate choice of wording; and, regardless, he didn't want to irritate this potential source of food- although he would believe his luck only once he was filling his belly. He knew it was possible this wouldn't go the way he was hoping.
"No, I don't have one. I've always lived alone." He shrugged his slender shoulders as he watched her open the containery-thing and the aroma in the air changed slightly. His stomach gurgled appreciatively. "I can't imagine living with a human, really."

He flicked his tail when she asked her next question, feeling a little foolish. Here she was, sharing her food, and it hadn't even crossed his mind to tell her his name. But, well, this was hardly a situation he'd been prepared for; he was thrown off guard, still listening for other signs of movement even as he gave the female his attention. But there was nothing so far, no reason to suppose they were not alone. He tried to relax.
"My name is Faendal", he replied. "And uh... Since you're being generous enough to share your food with me, can I know yours?"

Mini listened to him as he spoke while she gathered different foods into a pile with her paws. It sounded like he didn't want a keeper really. She felt almost bad for him though. What kind of human would just let a Maneki Neko grow up by itself? Perhaps he just didn't like the idea because he hadn't met many nice ones. That sounded quite sad to her. If someone were mean to her, Anna would probably threaten them or something. Of course, she should have known there were ones like that out there. A little kindness towards this neko would be good for him.

She stuck her head out over the shelf that she was on to look down at him. "It's nice to meet you Faendal. My name is Mini. I'm going to push the food down to you. Are you ready?" In her gentle manner, she nudged the food towards the edge with her nose. Before pushing them over, she looked down again to make sure he was paying attention. Then she gave one final push. All the yummy morsels fell down to the ground in a rain of pastry, some with fruity filling and some with meats inside.

Mini jumped down and closed the case as quickly as she could so flies wouldn't get in. She frowned as she looked at her work. Maybe it would have been smarter to put a plate on the ground before pushing them all down. Now she'd have to find some napkins to wipe the floor with after he was done eating. Well, there was nothing to be done now. She'd just have to wait till he left to do so. She smiled up at him. "Enjoy!"

"I... Uh, yes. Ready," Faendal said in response to her question. He wasn't really as ready as he thought though; and was forced the bounce backwards, out of the way of the rain of baked goods Mini sent down to him.

He waited for them all to settle; one rolling a little way before coming to a halt close to his paws. He sniffed at it; it was long, and thin, and it smelled good. The smell of sweetness in the bakery wasn't coming from this bit of food, and he thought he detected meat- although, with the mixture of different smells assailing his nostrils, it was hard to be sure. Well, there was one way to check.

Putting his paw on one end to stop it rolling away, he was about to bite into it when a tought occurred to him. He looked up at Mini, who had jumped down again.
"I, er. Thank you. This... means a lot." Pleasantries taken care of, his gingerly bit the end off the baked food.

The taste hit his tongue- he had been right, some sort of mixed, cooked meat product was inside. As he swallowed his stomach growled and he groaned; all thoughts of etiquette, of respect, were overwhelmed by the hunger he'd been managing to control and he tore into the meat-filled pastry. Layers off pastry scattered on the floor and he ignored them; but any crumb of meat was licked up, and he didn't stop until he'd wolfed down the entire thing.

He forced himself to stop after that one, instead of pouncing straight onto the next. He knew from experience that taking his time over food made him feel fuller sooner; and letting his hunger lead to him wolfing down as much as he could, as fast as he could, just made him feel unwell.
And he suddenly remembered that it was a gift from a new acquaintance. He brushed off his whiskers with his paws and licked around his mouth, before looking up at Mini, self-conscious of the mess he had made and his lack of manners.

Mini blinked her blue eyes at him with a smile. Her whiskers twitched in amusement when he thanked her in a slightly awkward way. She sure hoped he enjoyed it. Anna had worked hard to bake those. "Your welcome." She stopped herself from frowning. It still upset her that he had no human to feed him on a daily basis. She had to wonder what it was like having to find your own food.

She held her tongue to keep from asking. He seemed to be really enjoying the food that she picked out for him. The mess was evidence enough of that. It made her giggle. She wrinkled her nose in amusement and held her paw up to her mouth to cover up her laughter. Faendal must have been very hungry indeed. "You know, it's not going to run away or anything."

Mini offered a reassuring smile after he cleaned himself and looked at her. "You finish your food now. I gotta go finish mine." Her bowl still had food in it. She had stopped in her eating to investigate the noise and found Faendal.

Her paws padded softly across the bakery floor till she got to her bowl. She would trust him to not take more than was offered him. She knelt down to her bowl and picked up a piece in her delicate manner. A soft sigh escaped her when she finished off the rest of her own food.
