Mezlijin paced through the undergrowth of the forest, keeping a close eye out for herbs and grumbling miserably the entire time. He was fuming mad, Mlinzi had chased him away again, and worse, he had done it for a female! These women were driving him crazy always coming around and putting the moves on his best friend! HE NEVER GOT TO SPEND ANY TIME WITH HIM ANYMORE!
Angry at the entire situation he kicked an ant hill over, feeling no regret for destroying their home. He smirked a bit, watching as they scattered about for shelter. But he quickly became bored with them, and moved on, hoping to fair better entertainment somewhere else. He never had this situation when he was hanging with Mlinzi! There was always something he could do to keep himself occupied, but nooooo he had to find a female...
He was so jealous his fur would surely turn green from envy at any second, but he didn't much care right now. Maybe later, but not now. Still grumbling with distaste Mezlijin managed to stumble from the undergrowth and back to his family's den. For the most part his big family all stayed in the same area. Maybe he could find someone here who would give him some attention.

Malaya had just come in off her shift. It has been a long day and she was looking forward to relaxing. In her jaws she carried a plump rabbit. She'd get off her feet and enjoy a meal. A glance was cast toward the dens of the sick as she passed. A quiver passed over her shoulders and she walked a bit quicker.
Maybe she'd eat in front of her den. The black lioness headed to the den she called home. It was nearby to her father Sliabh's den, but far enough to give her some personal space. As she reached the entrance she threw herself to the ground. A groan escaped her lips as she dropped the rabbit. Laying down felt so good to be off her feet. Licking her lips she started in on her meal.

Hearing the loud groan, Mezlijin quickly turned to face the source. But he was nothing, the dens were empty, and surely he was far enough away from the sick to hear their groans? Mezlijin shook his head free of the thought, he didn't like thinking about the sick lions, it only forced him to face the truth. One day he would lose his best friend.
Shaking his head free of the worry took some time, but he managed. As an afterthought he decided to look into the groan he had heard. It couldn't have been the sick, which meant someone was near him. A quick hint of blood reassured his thoughts, someone was definitely close.
Slinking to the ground, and putting on his best sleuthing impression he followed the scent, right up to a lioness with a very similar coloring. There was no need to connect the dots necessary, her coloring was all he needed. She was eating, and he didn't want to interrupt, but he so badly wanted someone to speak to!
"H-Hey, y-you're my sister!" He paused as he neared her trying his best not to alarm him. "That is, I think you are!" As silenced swallowed the area he frantically searched for something else to add.
"Aren't you?"

She had just started eating when a scent filtered through the blood. It was faintly familiar. Malaya looked up as a voice spoke out. She regarded the male a moment with her tail twitching. His sister? She knew he was absolutely not part of her litter. But still he did smell faintly of something she recognized, and those colors.
Malaya tilted her head at him and licked her lips clean. "I know for a fact your are not my brother. However, you might be a half-brother. My father is Sliabh." She had a hunch and waited for him to confirm or deny it. It seemed the pride was full of her siblings, half-siblings, adopted siblings, and sibling-in-laws. A grin crossed her lips.

Her first comment got him a little down, and the poor leopon ducked his head in embarrassment. He probably shouldn't have been so open to a complete stranger - except she wasn't a complete stranger.
"Um yeah, that's what I meant! Sorry to startle you, my name is Mezlijin. Your coat just looked a lot like my Dad's... He trailed off, occupying his time with digging his paws into the dirt. But her next comment brought him back - "Yeah! Sliabh is my Dad! I know I don't look much like him, but my friend tells me that's normal since i'm a high-bread."

Malaya indulged in several more bites as she watched the young male. Her rabbit wouldn't last long unless she took her time with it. So she was using him for that purpose. She gave a soft laugh as he spoke again. He seemed very likeable.
"I thought you might have been related to father." She gave him a grin. "Hello Mezlijin. Sorry I've never met you before. I'm Malaya." Malaya gave a small giggle. "So what do you do?"

Mezlijin watched Malaya silently as she ate, realizing he was hungry himself. He took a mental note that he should probably find food soon after. With her laugh, a huge smile appeared on the leopon's face. She wasn't angry with him afterall!
"Yeah! I don't get to see him much, but I know I have a big family here.." He smiled a dopey smiled and continued. "Malaya? That sounds familiar kind of like a medicine my friend makes." He paused for a moment, and then cut himself off. "I really don't know what I do. I haven't really found place yet. I usually guide someone around. He's blind and can't see much, so I guide him around so he can still do his duties. What is it you do?" He asked curiously, genuinely excited to meet a new family member at last.

She could understand his complaint about not seeing their father often. In fact, she'd barely met him in passing. Perhaps she should have a talk with her sire about that. With so many cubs, he really needed to be involved in them. She was just as bad, Malaya realized. Of all the relations she had in the pride, she barely knew any.
The black lioness made a face at being compared to a medicine. "Oh great, now I'll never live that down." She teased her half-sibling. "Wow! That's kind of you Mezlijin. I'm sure he apreciates it. I'm a scout for the pride."

A loud series of chuckles followed Malaya's crack, and he tried to stifle it with his paw. Which merely resulted in more muffled giggles. "Oh, but this is a good one! It smells really good, and most of the cubs will take it without much trouble." He interjected loudly trying to defend her name, "Promise!" He smiled adding a wink in for good measure.
"Thank you! I enjoy it a lot! He tries to talk me out of it, but he would be lost without me! He paused then added, "Seriously!"
"A scout huh? Aren't scouts able to go beyond the borders? I can only go on the pride's edges. I'm too nervous to go any farther."

Malaya grinned in response to his chuckles. He was a rather cute leopon. She twitched her ear and gave him a playful, half-disbelieving look. "Weellllll," she drawled, "if it's just your word to go on. I guess I have to believe you. If it helps the cubs take their medicine then its all good." She smiled.
She listened to him talking about his 'job' leading his friend. "It's great to do something you enjoy." She nodded earnestly, believing him fully in this. "I'm sure he doesn't mean it when he tries to talk you out of it. He just doesn't want you to feel bound to taking care of him." Malaya encouraged him.
"Yup. I often go out scouting out in the pride lands. I also warn lions away from the pride lest they get too close." Malaya was proud of her work. "If we need extra hunting I keep track of the herds that pass through too." She tilted her head at him. "Well if you'd like, I can take you with me some day. Let you see what it's like."

Mezlijin's jaw nearly dropped as Malaya explained dead on, exactly what Mlinzi had tried so many times to tell him. "That's exactly what he says! He doesn't want me to burden myself with his troubles, but I don't think I am. I think he is helping me, I look up to him a lot." He smiled happily as he realized maybe the two of them were on to something that he just couldn't understand. "I just wish I could get him to understand that before its too late." He sighed, trying to avoid the imminent bad mood by holding onto Malaya's every word. Being a scout seemed like a tough job, and it would allow him to leave the lands! Something he desperately wanted to do. Not only would he get some fresh air, but he could find new herbs!
"Oh could I PLEASE! That would be really cool! I promise I wouldn't be too in the way. I mean - i'd stay close, but I wouldn't mess your duties up or anything! I'm good at being good." He laughed as he realized that in his excitement he had managed to hop onto his feet.

She had to laugh softly at his expression. He was a dear. "Tiz a good friend that doesn't listen to reasons like that. I'm absolutely sure he enjoys your company. From the sounds of it you do to." Malaya purred reassuringly. "Perhaps he does." She reached out and patted him a couple times with her paw.
His reaction to her offer couldn't have pleased her more. "Yes you may. I'd like to have some company." She chuckled. "Don't worry, we'd cover a lot of ground." She nodded as he jumped up. "Not tonight of course. Are you doing anything a couple days from now? That would be a good one to come with me. If you need time to check with someone that's fine too."

"I really do, and I hope you're right about him. He's my best friend, i'm not sure what to do without him." Mezlijin's face dropped a bit, but somehow he managed to pull it together. His face told one story, but his eyes were traitors to his real feelings.
"Ummm yes! I mean no! I mean i'm free! I can ask Mlinzi's girlfriend to watch over him!" Mezlijin made a sour face, his expression clearly full of distaste. "I'm sure he won't mind her company instead of mine!" Still standing and on his paws, he nearly jumped with delight, "Thank you so much Malaya, I won't let you down!"
As he stood there prancing he caught another glimpse of Malaya's meal and his tummy began to rumble. "Well I guess I should go find some dinner. Thank you for your offer, i'll be back real soon to help you out!" He grinned, before bounding away into the forest once more.
