Where was he? Was he running late again?
Her too, she’d promised.
Where were her friends?
It was so quiet. Should she call someone? But her phone was all the way over there on the chair, concealed in the pocket of her trousers. She offered it a distant longing stare.
That just wasn’t going to happen.
She was left alone again, just her thoughts and her and… ceiling tiles.
One… Two… Three…
Seven… Eigh- wait! Byr? Is that you?
The creature in her thoughts seemed to shrink back at the acknowledgement, slowly seeping back in the shadows. Almost as if he were expecting to be told off again.
Wait wait Byr, stay.
The sensation seemed to freeze like a deer caught in the headlights. Was this a trick? Was she going to take her frustration out on him now? Hesitantly he stayed but his skepticism still lingered like a heavy muggy cloud.
The question stung. But, perhaps he was right. In her desperate search for companionship, it seemed she not only overlooked one – but downright cast them aside for every attempt to speak to her made.
I’m sorry Byr.
The fact she meant it seemed to put the jackalope at some ease.
As bitter as the words may have come across, he was actually eager to help and especially being asked to help, for once.
Actually, I… I don’t really know anything about you.
I… I know that Byr, I mean the stuff I don’t know.
I mean, do you remember anything from before?
I thought you said you remembered sex and stuff?
Rin heaved a light frustrated sigh. Were all weapons this vague about themselves?
Well, is there anything else you are certain you liked?
You mean a forest?
Terrible grammar aside, it was a fondness she could understand. Just thinking about walking through a forest with tall towering trees made the huntress smile.
Is there anything else you like?
He neglected to point out that Rin was the only one he could ever remember being able to talk to. But that was okay, Rin knew but let it slide.
What about colour? Do you have a favourite colour?
Oh… right, he heard that. He likely felt how she felt then, too. She didn’t even need to ask when he quickly harped up.
She felt terrible, he did have a point. She never once felt grateful for him. She always just resented him invading her space. It was her mind. He had no right to it. But then, what rights did he have? She had left him crippled. He was a… somewhat living thing and she’d reduced him to nothing more than a piece of metal she swung around. He was not allowed to think or feel anymore and it was all he really had left.
I’m sorry Byr. I hadn’t really…
Yeah… what do you like to do for fun?
Really? What’s your favourite game?
Rin looked thoughtful. That actually sounded like fun right now. Quickly her eyes darted about the room.
I spy with my little eye… something that is green.
Byr felt thoughtful and a bit more pressing as he poked around in Rin’s thoughts.
You’re such a cheater! I totally felt that.
no idea what you are talking about~>
His tone seemed almost as if he was crooning contentedly at her and frankly, it put the woman at ease as she smirked.
Don’t give me that you jack-a-a**!
Pfft, do not!
But she did. Sharing herself didn’t really come naturally to her. It felt not only crazy willingly allowing oneself to hear voices – but to welcome them and to speak back to them? She’d just assumed it was frowned upon. They fought these creatures – why should they listen to them? Just swing them about, use them like tools.
She was wrong though. They weren’t simply tools to meet ones ends. They were partners, companions, allies. They were like loyal dogs always at their master’s side. Loss of owner was a loss of themselves. What gain would they have to lead their partners too far astray? None. It would lose them their only company, their only voice, their only way of fighting, of feeling this world they are in. It takes away what they have left and weakens them.
These thoughts twirled about her mind, she stewed in them before suddenly snapping back into reality.
My turn again and this time, no cheating!
No cheating?
I spy with my little eye…
