The day was bright but windy, the mountaintops whistling and the tall grasses rushing in their whispered voices. One moment the land was empty and the next, a streak of grey sped across the stretch of open land, plunging head-first into a tangle of undergrowth. A moment later and some roosting birds gave startled shrieks and leapt skywards; their wings snapping in time with their cries.
And then the grey shape emerged again, leaping like a young antelope at play before slowing to a halt and tossing up her head.
It was Laka Subiani, some distance from her clan's current settlement but close enough that she could return before anyone started to worry about her. And boy did they worry! You'd think her journey out into rogue lands would have helped alleviate her parents' fears, but alas, no such luck. They fussed over her as if she were a cub and she wasn't even their youngest! Hadn't even been a part of their last litter!
Her tail swayed to and fro as she watched the birds disappear and then, with a small chuff of contentment, she turned and continued on her way, moving at a slower pace this time.

It was a very good day to wander, Sedi had decided. A small scene caused by his mother was more than enough to send him away from the clan for the afternoon. He had been walking for quite some time, careful to avoid the Shadow clan, knowing their current camp was somewhere off in this direction from previous days wandering around. He wasn't expecting to run into anybody but he definitely wasn't expecting to see the kind of commotion the gray lioness was causing. It was enough to make him stop and stare for a few minutes, but once Laka was on the move again, he moved on as well, changing his course just enough so they would not cross paths.

Unfortunately for poor Sedi, Laka had been keeping an eye out for any lions to cross paths with. She was, after all, an extremely social creature and at the first sight of an unknown tattooed lion was enough to have her bounding excitedly across to meet him.
"Hey, hey! Wait up!" Her voice was bright and friendly. "Hey!"
She was out of breath as she drew up closer to him, slowing in an attempt to be able to speak again. "Hello!"

As much as Sedi would have loved to run away and hide from a stranger or evaporate on the spot, he wasn't so rude as to actually do it. He didn't have to want to be social to know he had to be more polite than that, perhaps one of the few good things he learned from watching his mother's erratic and unpredictable behavior.
He wasn't going to make it easy, though. He waited for her to reach him and managed to stifle a sigh when she stood there before him, out of breath but looking positively cheerful.
"Hello," he responded, taking a minute to look her over. She had very interesting tattoos.

She smiled prettily as she peered up at him, thinking that he seemed at a loss for words. Well, never mind! She was certain she could strike up a conversation with him. Besides, she had questions and she was certainly going to ask them.
"I'm Laka Subiani of Shadow Clan." Laka announced, lifting her head a little. "I heard Wolf was somewhere around here but I didn't realise I'd come that far! You are Wolf, aren't you?" She allowed her eyes to move across his tattoos, too; so vibrant against his pelt. Some had often told her that she had chosen the wrong colour for her own - for they appeared faded against the grey and hard to read. She didn't mind in the slightest, though. Blue was her favourite colour - the colour of the never-ending sky - and the tales of the land were inscribed there on her pelt. Laka loved travelling. Loved seeing new places. Unfortunately for her, her rogue friend who aided her in this hadn't been by in a long time.
Actually, she was beginning to doubt he'd be by again, which was a little sad, but she wasn't the type to let it get her down.
"Are you on patrol?" She asked after a moment.

Sedi nodded in reply to her introduction but he didn't get an opportunity to introduce himself right away, she was very chatty. Nobody ever came up and spoke to him like this, probably because everybody in the Wolf Clan knew he wasn't really going to be very cheerful back. Family members were more inclined to try, of course, and he was similarly inclined to try harder in return.. but that was about it.
"No, I'm not on patrol, just for a walk," he said, going on to introduce himself, "But I am from the Wolf Clan, I'm Sedi Waya."

"Oh, that's good!" Laka chirped, taking a small step forwards in the manner of an eager cub. She was still a young adult and had yet to acquire the same sense of responsibility and duty that many of her siblings had. Maybe one day she would. Stranger things had happened. "I can walk with you in that case." She continued merrily. "Terrorising the local wildlife is only fun for a bit. And then it gets boring." She wrinkled her snout and then laughed.
"In any case it's nice to meet new faces. I do get tired of seeing the same old people all the time - even though I love them. My brother is having some sort of drama at the moment and my sister seems to have rekindled her adventurous spirit." She laughed. "I recognise your family name too. Are there a lot who share it?"
After all, she knew she hadn't met this lion before.

He couldn't get over how strange it felt to have someone seem so excited to be talking to him. Even his siblings didn't speak to him like this but.. maybe they knew better. Or perhaps they had the same tiredness as him.
"Alright," he said with a small shrug, not quite indifferent. He blinked as Laka continued, primarily picking up on the mention of her brother and drama. He was not a fan of drama, he'd had more than enough in his life and he hadn't even really done anything himself. Perhaps wandering could end up giving him trouble.
"My family is very big, my grandmother is Tsi'hilu Waya," he said, "My mother has something like fifteen brothers and sisters, at least one of my uncles is in another clan. Actually, I think it might be the Shadow Clan."

Thankfully, Laka's life was currently very undramatic, though she liked to talk as if amazing things happened to her every day. She beamed up at him, unaware of the fact that he wasn't exactly pleased to be bombarded, and continued in her merry voice: "Oh yes! I've heard of Tsi'hilu Waya in stories! That's wonderful! I wonder if our families are matched up! That would be so exciting!" Would it really, though? Apparently so.
"Your family sounds quite a lot like mine, although I have to admit it's amazing that your mother has so many siblings. I thought I came from a big family but hers is bigger still! That's really nice, although I bet it can get a bit suffocating, can't it? Not being able to go anywhere without bumping into an aunt or a cousin or something and them knowing all of your business. That's why I like to get out and about from time to time. Stretch my legs a bit. Get some privacy!"
She continued; "we should be friends and meet up more often, you know, seeing as we have similar predicaments. Hey, maybe when I go on my next adventure out into rogue lands you can come with me? I need a new travelling partner since I've been abandoned by my other one." She looked momentarily stricken at that. She missed that particular rogue dearly and wondered whether something had happened to him. Or that he had forgotten her. She wasn't sure what would be worse. Shaking herself out of that rut, she fluttered her eyelashes up at him. "What do you say, Sedi?"

As soon as Laka said it would be suffocating not going anywhere without running into an aunt or cousin. He did have a lot of aunts and uncles but somehow, and he didn't think this made any sense at all, only his mother had ever had any cubs. He had no cousins-- unless the uncle that moved to the Shadow Clan had, he couldn't remember.. but he probably did. And nobody, not even his father, seemed intent on prying anymore.. but that was another worry.
He didn't get a good chance to intervene before, suddenly, she was suggesting they become friends and traveling companions. It was a shock that even with his indifferent attitude the whole way through their conversation, she would still say they ought to be friends. Sedi didn't know how to respond except to try to brush it off.
"It's not such a big problem for me, I guess," he muttered, "I don't know."

She laughed at him, though not unkindly. He definitely needed to get out a bit and lighten up and she was just the cat to do it. Reaching out with a paw, she poked him in the shoulder, beaming at him all the while.
"Well of course you don't know. You've never tried it! Okay, well, now that we're friends I am obligated to take you on an adventure. Not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But someday, all right? On a day when you least expect it. So be prepared." She wriggled as she contemplated on that future event and then took a few steps back, peering up at him curiously. Sometimes she didn't understand how Ela'wadiyi could get to be so...so...anti-social.
Well, just as a frown could be turned upside-down she was certain a pessimist could be turned into an optimist.
Perhaps that was her calling in life.
