The situation that she found herself in was eerily similar to the first time she’d encountered a dragon. The forest was silent, still, as if it were waiting for something exciting to happen. There was a pulse to the air, a thickness that could only be called anticipation. Elleth hated it. It felt far too much like the stifling air at home, the weight of expectations of greatness. It always tasted like bitterness on the back of her tongue, the disgusting taste of disappointment. It made her grit her teeth and continue the systematic search for her prey.
The victory over the Ysail dragon with Samril had boosted her confidence and the sparring match between them had improved her skills. It was small things, like always keeping an eye on where her opponent was and how far away they were. But her instructors had been impressed and had switched her normal partner out with someone new. That alone had made her day, even though she’d been beaten black and blue and told that she was lower than dirt. She was long desensitized to the vicious name calling and the mental beat down. It was just their way of trying to toughen her up.
She heard it long before she saw it, the slithering sound of something moving among the fallen leaves. Instinct had her jumping backwards as roots shot up from where she’d been standing just moments prior. Her eyes darted around as her feet kept her on the move, weaving between trees as the dragon tried to predict her moves and skewer her on the roots it commanded. There was no way in the Goddesses name she was going to loose to another dragon, not so soon after her victory over the last one.
Elleth snarled and launched herself at the sinuous form the moment she spotted it, curled around a tree like a serpent on a branch. Its wings were tucked against its back, but flared out once it saw that she knew where it was. But the beast didn’t launch itself into the air, no it simply snapped its wings shut again and dropped down, weight sending leaves flying away. Healthy leaves dropped down, only to be caught in a net of magic and flung her way.
It wasn’t easy dodging the projectiles and Elleth earned her share of thin painful cuts. Soon it became obvious that the dragon was only toying with her, driving her in the directions it wanted her to go in. The knowledge only increased her anger at the reptile and that anger gave her a boost to her speed. Oh she knew she was being reckless when she charged again, actually using the dragons own attacks to aid her, the roots became stepping stones that propelled her faster and closer to her goal.
The Ysail didn’t know what hit it when she finally did arrive, bloody and furious. Her hands struck against every spot she could reach, blows rapidly beating dragonscale into something brittle, forcibly creating weaknesses in something that would otherwise seem impenetrable. Her hands were bloody and she would feel the pain when she came down from her fury. But all that mattered right now was proving that she was no dragons play thing.
Again and again did she strike out, until at last the dragon slumped to the ground and started to smoulder. She glared at its bones and was tempted to leave them there, but honor dictated that she show respect to her fallen enemy. The grave she dug was shallow and took her most of the day, but it was done. She clasp her hands together and sent off a small prayer before turning on her heel and walking away. She had a long way to go while the adrenaline still surged through her veins, keeping the pain at bay.
[Win= 10(5/8 ) = 6.25 or 6.3 exp] [Elleth has LEVELED UP to level 9 with 2.3 exp left over]
