It was just another day in the swamp for Howls-at-the-moon. The moonlight-colored doe made her way through some of the thicker grasses, traveling in the direction of some fresh water to clean her wounds and coat off in. Another day, a new challenger. Nothing pleased her more than the adrenaline rush of combat and despite the obvious limp she had from being body slammed into a tree and the various cuts and bruises across her face and body her head was held high. Today was a good day, and it was only going to get better, she had decided.

The air was a bit humid but Howl didn't mind as she reached the stream she'd been searching for. Kneeling down carefully, she lay in the water and sighed softly with contentment. Taking a bath would be the next best thing to happen to her today.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Today was not a good day for Nose-in-the-air. Though to be truthful, no day was ever pleasant for the endlessly pedantic buck. It could be too hot or too cold or too wet or simply too dreary. Happiness was never on Nose-in-the-air’s to-do list.

However he felt he had an especially good reason to be upset today. Not only had his son, a buck that was clearly not a good candidate for fatherhood, managed to spawn five evil gremlin offspring, but Nose’s former, terrifying one-time mate had gone ahead and popped two extra out as well. Life was an unfair, horrible place and Nose was imagining his future would involve nothing but constant run-ins and beat-downs from his extended family.

Grumbling to himself, Nose stumbled, rather than walked into the stream. He dipped his head to drink and took a good few minutes to realize he had company. The buck froze like a startled foxbun, turning his head only the slightest bit to stare at Howl.

A white ear swiveled when company approached, and Howl rest without making a single sound as she watched Nose-in-the-air lean down for a drink. Yet another unfamiliar buck... And why was his expression so troubled? Not that she could really be bothered with anyone else's problems, but it did make her slightly curious that any kimeti would be upset on an otherwise beautiful day. Still she did not say anything, although her white-tipped tail swished thoughtfully in the water until he noticed her.

Then her face screwed up a bit. Why in the swamp's name was he looking at her like that? Checking over her shoulder just to be sure there was not a caiman lurking nearby in hopes of catching her off guard, the doe gave a slight grunt before addressing Nose. "That's not any way to be admiring a lady. I've made jaws drop before, but never have I seen anyone so utterly terrified of my beauty." Well, that excluded those who cowered from fear after seeing how ruthless she could be in a fight.

“I-I am not terrified!” Nose eventually responded, recovering from his initial state of instinctive fright. “Nor are you that beautiful.” The buck huffed. The statement was quite untrue, if he’d just take a second to really look at her, he would really that she was obviously quite a fit and lovely doe. However he was having trouble making eye contact. His gaze was resting anywhere but on the other Kimeti. Obviously an extremely nervous creature, he was very slowly inching backwards.

"I'm not? How could you say that if you haven't even looked at me?" Standing from the water, Howls-at-the-moon didn't bother to shake out her dripping fur as she stepped closer to Nose. Her voice was full of irritation, but if one listened closely they might detect her natural need to be dominant over anyone weaker than her. She was almost like a predator, eyeing prey and edging closer until she could get in a solid bite on his throat. When she was no more than two feet away the doe bared her teeth, golden eyes intending on pinning the buck where he stood. "Look at me. I dare you to be brave and gaze upon me. If you aren't scared, that is." A challenge stated clearly.

Nose did not like being confronted. Especially not by terrifying does, which unfortunately was the only kind he ever seemed to meet. If Howl was a predator intent on dominating, Nose was the prey just about ready to roll onto its belly in submissive. He kept his gaze down, stance rigid. At least he was no longer moving backwards, he gave himself points for that, but he still refused to meet her gaze. “No.” He said. “Go bully someone else.” It wasn’t fair. His life was so depressing.

Bullying? For a moment her harsh demeanor halted, gears turning slowly in the doe's head as she tried to figure out if bullying equated to her actions now ...and when it did, Howls-at-the-moon actually began to chuckle. She took a slight step back, allowing Nose-in-the-air a bit more room to breathe. "No, I'm not bullying you... We're playing." A very interesting game indeed. She'd never met anyone like him before, a male who displayed all the signs of giving in to fear but actually had a bit of a backbone.

“We are not playing!” Nose gasped indignantly after having spent a long moment staring at her incredulously. In this moment, his gaze had lifted and their eyes finally met. “You are being a bully and once again I am the victim. I don’t see why all you nasty does can’t just go… be… be mean at each other.” He glowered at her.

"Well, I can easily see why you'd wind up someone else's chew toy. Look at you. You're no better than a foal stumbling around in the swamp. It makes does like me want to knock you around." She studied his face, interested in the fact that he honestly thought glaring was going to get him somewhere. "But what're you going to do about it if I do decide to bully you? Run?" She didn't advance, but simply waited for his answer.

When she called him no better than a stumbling foal, he looked indignant. A look that quickly dissolved when he found himself tongue-tied over her question. He leant his body backwards as far as he could without actually taking a step back and stuttered out a few incomprehensible words. Eventually he got out, “yes, maybe… no…”

He sighed. Why bother running? If she wanted to bully him, she would only follow.

Howl chuckled at his response. "Good boy. I see you're a fast learner... I bet that's how you survive out here." It was good of him to give up and see things her way, because next step of the game he'd be obeying her rules. Tossing of her head smugly, she finally stepped out of the stream and back onto the bank to dry her still wet coat. "Tell me your name. I need to learn something else about you today." Her tone was expectant, but still held her amusement quite obviously.

It was true. So far Nose’s relationships had involved him submitting to a stronger personality. His liaison with Strike had not exactly been the highlight of his life but she had been terrifying and saying no hadn’t seemed like an option. He hung his head, defeated. “Nose-in-the-air…” He murmured, watching her from the corner of his eye.

Her ears flicked forward at his name, making sure to keep track of it in her mental list of defeated bucks. It wouldn't be good if she forgot the name of her newest plaything. "Nose-in-the-air. How cautious... I think it suits you." Walking along the bank, she moved a slight distance away from Nose as if to lead him off somewhere. "I am Howls-at-the-moon, your conqueror. Now that we're introduced, follow me. There are plenty of games I'd like to play with you today, but I need lunch first." With that she began to walk farther into the swamp. The white doe did not turn around, knowing she'd be followed if Nose-in-the-air knew what was good for him.

There was simply no other option. In the end, Nose a very weak-willed buck that had come to terms with living an unhappy life. He had been born with a negative mind and so could not really be surprised when things turned out exactly as he had predicted. So the buck followed, shuffling reluctantly along behind Howl without a single word.
