Nightmare had decided that this was the day, he gritted his fangs, determined to create some good in the world and hold the monster he was becoming off a little longer, just long enough to teach his son, his only reason for living in the light, what he could. Teaching him the only thing he really knew down to the marrow of his burning bones, to be a fighter, a knight. " Tannin, come" He was rewarded by the clatter of awkward hooves as his ginger haired colt came scampering out of the woods, all spring and smiles. Nightmare smiled and nuzzled his kid affectionately. " ...Do you know what day it is Tannin?" He asked mildly, his glowing green eyes meeting the equally green eyes of his son. He had been telling young Tannin stories of his younger days when he had been a warrior steed, fighting off enemies, charging into enemy lines, saving damsels, all that sort of stuff. He hoped, with his stories and his mothers lineage...his heart ached at the thought of her...that he would grow to become a honorable stallion and not like his father, who could not shake the shadow of his darker past from him.

Tannin heard his father calling and raced to meet him in the small clearing outside the circle of pines and the small cave they had called home for a while. " Commin Daddy!" He called excitedly, his little bone hooves kicking up old pine needles and small pebbles in his hurry. He wiggled his little tail happily as his father nuzzled him " Day? what day izzit? Uhhh uhhhh..." He had to think fast! had to impress dad! " OH!" he exclaimed happily, his eyes shining like emeralds " Trainin! You're gonna make me a wahr e err!" he puffed out his little chest, happy he had remembered such an important thing! " Right Dad? right right?" he questioned excitedly

" Warrior" Nightmare corrected with a chuckle " Though we're going for...a more noblesort, do you remember what they're called?" He began walking towards the little training ground he had been building since Tannin had popped from his baskety confines, Tannin followed behind him, his little hooves clattering happily behind his strong, though dragging, hoof falls. He came to a clearing, behind his mask he winced a little, Tannin had been taught to live under the light of the sun but it was still slow going for Nightmare to be used to its glaring rays, was it angry with him as well?
The clearing was full of training pells Nightmare had made himself from beating at old trees with his bone hooves until they were just the right size and shape to use for what he needed them for. There were large massses of dried grasses rolled up and tied with chords scattered around, It was a shabby comparison to what he had trained on when he was a young fighting stallion, but this would do for Tannin.

Tannin screwed up his little face and recalled the stories his dad had told him growing up, the ones where the noblesteed defeated the dragon with the help of his human rider and...oh! " Knights!" he crowed, bouncing like an excited grasshopper. " I got it!" He pranced behind his father happily, an extra spring in his step. He beamed up as his dad as he was awarded the approving nod, he followed his father down through the woods until they hit a clearing that he, in all of the time growing up and playing here, had ever seen!
"Woooaaahhhh!" he exclaimed, his green eyes growing HUGE in amazement, looking around and nosing around at the whole of the training ground " This is AMAZING daddy!" He nearly whinnied in delight. " Is this where you're gonna train me to be a big noble knightguy!? Is it Is it~!?" He bounced in anticipation. He knew, even then that being a knight was no picnic in the park, it was sooo exciting to finally see all this, to get started becoming like his father!

Nightmare looked down at his cute excitable son and he smiled, genuinely smiled, at him. Tannin was the only thing in his life right now that made any sense, made him any kind of happy...He cleared his throat and motioned to the area with a nod of his head " Yes... this is where you'll be training Tannin, though you wont be training to be what i was, you will be something better if i can help it..." He looked at his son from behind his mask, his eyes mirroring the glowing green of his own. " It's what I could get together for you anyway..." He walked over to one of the pells and lashed out with one bony hoof, striking at it hard, the whole thing shaking in his wake, the old wood smoking slightly from the coldfire of his hooves.
" These are used for this..." He looked back at his wide eyed son " Do you get it? Here, come try."

Tannin wrinkled his little brow and trotted boldly up to the wood pell, giving it the full force of his itty bitty boldness and with a whiney he reared and struck the pell awkwardly with a hoof. Immediately wheeling around and squeaking " That thing's hard!" he exclaimed. Getting an amused look from Nightmare and some encouragement he set his jaw and a little miffed went for it again, battering it with his tiny hooves, which were so much smaller and less...flamey then his fathers. He wondered how much that had to do with how much of a difference there was in their hooves, his father said it was an advantage to have bone legs like him, there were no feelings in legs like this, and so they were effective weapons in battle, BUT! as his father lectured, of course, this sort of training was only for defense of ones self or others.
He tried again and managed to chip a small piece of wood off with a strike, he turned to his father with a big grin. " I did it!"

Nightmare found it hard not to smile fondly upon his son, trying with all his little might to break a piece of wood off of the pell. He knew it would be hard work, but the little tyke had it in him that he wanted to be a knight, Nightmare guessed it was one too many stories about dragons and damsels in distress. He watched his progress, only slightly worried that the skin that stretched so taught over his little hooves would stay a little longer, he had had such hooves as a child, but of course, his were flaming, smaaaaall difference.
"Very good Tannin!" He said, his voice ringing with approval, lipping his sons pumpkin colored bangs " you'll be off battling the forces of evil before you know it!" He chuckled, his voice still whispery, as if it were the sound of long dead leaves being disturbed by the wind.

Tannin had grown up with only his father around him, training him, it seemed, since he had come out of his basket and decided he had wanted to be just like his daddy. He was not bothered by the burning hooves or his eerie voice. He just loved his father, no matter how strange he was or how often he found him somewhere dark and by himself, brooding over things Tannin couldn't possibly understand.
He looked up through his shock of hair at his father, panting heavily and sweating, having pummeled the pell until his little body couldn't take it anymore. " Waugh...I'm tired dad." He rolled his tongue and flopped onto the ground with his father chuckling above him. He opened one green eye as his hair moved, lipped affectionately by his father, gently, though the maw above him held many sharp and dangerous fangs. He had never been scared of his father, and even he was his fathers son, he would undoubtedly grow to resemble the great and spooky warrior, and he was ok with that. He would someday fight to make others understand that there was good in the hearts of the unusual.

Nightmare let him rest for a while, it was no good exhausting the little colt, he would need the strength to get up and continue later, this training had to continue until he was grown, until he realized that if he wanted to become a knight, there was no easy way out. There would always be hardships, victories as well as defeats, and there would always, ALWAYS, be heartbreak. He grimaced as tears stung at his glowing eyes. He let his mask hide his shame. " That's good for now Tannin" he said, nuzzling his bone weary kid " you did well for your first time, but there will be more later"
He watched the shock on Tannins face and interrupted him before he could speak " You wanted to be a knight son. It is not an easy path, it takes much training...and i've read you plenty of stories, the code, the measure...now, you must train your body, when you grow up, you will understand that it is...necessary." The little colt was quiet for a minute, perhaps he'd give up, perhaps it was too hard for him? Kids had dreams but some of them were impossible...maybe he had pushed him too far...He started to speak but was interrupted himself! " NO! I'LL DO IT! this isn't hard at all!" Tannin squeaked, trying to get up, a fine effort on his part, but ultimately flopping back down again.
Nightmare chuckled and bending his legs, laid down next to him. " Sometimes REST is necessary too you little scrapper." Nightmare himself had never become a knight, he was on the front lines of a vast human army, carrying human knights into battle, but even so, he was merely a squire of sorts, he was being taught by his peers who had been there long before he was, battle hardened and scarred from countless fights. He knew how to survive, and he learned their ways and code, Tannin had the makings of something great, he could see it in his sons eyes. Though he had never made it...perhaps...perhaps his son could. He thought of her again, he would always think of her, the shining light in his darkness, the one he had left behind for such selfish reasons. She had been born of an angeni and a knight herself...it was in their blood, like goodness flowing right through his veins.
He looked down, snapping out of his thoughts to find that Tannin had fallen into an exhausted sleep next to him. He stared at his flesh and blood, so tired, but with a big smile on his little face...Life would be hard, but for now, he could only bestow what he knew onto his child and hope that it would serve him well. Tannin would be the one to do what he never had. He would be noble and he would be, what he had always dreamt, a full fledged knight. He exhaled a breath of hazy green mist and settled down to rest, curling his neck around his son. Till then...
