THREAD LIKE THIS Your time with the Wher Handlers has truly only begun. With Thread now falling and claiming land as well as lives, your mettle will be tested in this simulation of thread reaching the ground. Your job is to clear it out, track its nests, and destroy the Thread before it can defile and destroy more then already has. Thread has been simulated by dyed strings and puppeted by flits. Proper avoidance of threadscore and handling of situations will be noted. You may take only one of the following with you: a knife, a small flamethrower, a torch, or a portable water pack.
PARTICIPANTS Kesin (Meep) Cesoi (slayer) Charmaine (same) Hus (mort) Silion (shika) You have been summoned to just outside Benden Hold in the twilight hours and have arrived by Runner-drawn cart. Told only to bring what is on your back, it is unclear why you’ve been brought so far out of the Weyr when you’ve heard other apprentices have been summoned into its depths. With the sun setting behind the mountains and shadows growing long in the valley, the swish of many wings can be heard as flits flutter about. There are a great many of them – too many to belong to a single person. Like you, they have been summoned as well. Great vats of something stand to the side, guarded by a particularly grizzled and scarred Wherhandler and his equally disgruntled bronze wher who watches you with menacing, slowly swirling eyes of orange and deep blue.
Before you stands a woman in the prime of her life. This is no wilting flower, no foppish rider but a veteran Wherhandler with the scars and stories to prove it. With her hand on her hip, she frowns as your group slips off the cart and shuffle on over, mentally sizing each one of you up. Grunting, she shakes her head and squares her shoulders, “I am Wherhandler Jakarth, and my lovely assistant is Jakask.” At his name, a burly, hulking monster of a brown padded over and head butted his handler then growled at the assembled candidates, “We’re the ones overseeing your test tonight. No funny business, I assure you – Jakask has the best pair of eyes this side of Benden, I bet you ten marks.” The seriousness of her tone made it obvious she was ready and willing to stake such a fortune on her bet – she’d likely won before.
“Oh, and that sharding ugly sod with the match bronze is Brizan and Brizsk. Piss ‘em off if you like, entertainment’s always welcome.” At this introduction, the handler by the bins grinned to reveal a couple missing teeth and a wicked glint in his eye.
“Anyway, the task at hand is this: as wherhandlers, you must sometimes fight thread. Yeah, yeah, I know – ‘but that’s for the sodding Riders ma’am’ – but those riders aren’t as great as they make themselves out to be. They miss stuff, Thread especially, and it gets in the ground and kills everything ‘round. We’re the Plan B – we burn it all from down here while they spin loops in the air. That’s what you’ll be doing tonight, routing thread. Seeing as how there’s not been a Fall here yet, we’re improvising. The flits are going to try to kill you with Thread.” She gestured at the bins, “Your job is to kill the Thread before it does you in. Get the dye on you, it’s a scar, get too much and you’re out. There’s equipment here – take your pick. You’ve got three minutes before I dump the whole vat on you and tell Keller the worth o’ you lot.”Important Stuff Instructions: In your first post of the Guided ORP, post in bold at the top left, which item you selected – the importance will come in later. In your opening post, and throughout your posts in the ORP, reflect on the training your character has had – how their traits have influenced their experience, what they’ve learned, and where they came from before being recruited. Remember to interact! This is a guided ORP, meaning a staff member will post a guiding/prompting post and give OOC instructions as to what to do if there is anything special to do. The quality of your posts and effort to interact with other players will be noted and influence your review score, so keep this in mind. Throughout the ORP, the Staff will include a 1d10 roll – this is important. Participants may roll THREE TIMES MAX between staff posts but you may post as often as you like. The staff will respond to the RP as well as the quality of the rolls. To accumulate your review score simple do the following:-Roll 1d10 each post. -> If it is HIGHER than the STAFF NUMBER, you are doing well at the task at hand. -> If it is LOWER than the STAFF NUMBER, you are doing poorly at the task at hand. -> If it is the SAME as the STAFF NUMBER, gain double the rolled points because you discovered/found something interesting. -Add up each roll you make, and keep a rolling tally. When the game closes, your total will be your Review Score + your Effort Score (as judged by staff members, it is worth 25 points). -Special Events will occur in the game, specific circumstances will effect game play and be particular to that event.

knife
Hus was the first one off the cart and even in these twilight hours her dark green and brown hunters style garb made her a dusky figure against the nearing black. The only color on the girl was her wild mane of copper orange hair which today had been tied back in a tight braid. Bright cat green eyes scanned over their surrounding with a glance seeming to be sizing up each threat and the two handlers before shifting up to eye the swarm of flits as the woman explained what was going to happen. So this was it? Very well then she'd had to take care of plenty of creatures that thought they could get the jump on her from above. Then shifting her gaze she eyed the items and idea came to her. Leaning back towards the rest of the group she whispered in a low voice.
"I have a plan that just might get us all through this if you lot are willing to work with me. We need two on flame thrower, one on the knife then we need one person on the torch and another on the water pack." She explained quickly in a hushed tone keeping her eyes on their two instructors at all times.
"Just to show I'm serious I'll even take the knife." Hus added giving the group a serious glance. If they stuck together they just might get through this. Though she personally didn't like the idea of having to depend on this lot for her survival it could earn them all a good deal of points with their instructors.
"If we form up into a circle, the two flamers on air duty, the torch holder in the middle and me and whoever is on the water pack watching for any thread that hits the ground we'll all make it through and be ready for when they stop dropping the stuff. It'll also give us mobility if we need to move, we can move under the cover of the flamers. Are you with me?" She asked stepping forward and picking the knife from the pile before turning to the others gaze searching.

water pack
Pick one thing? Just one? Kesin surveyed the items before them, considering each one in turn and what use it might be to her. Given what they knew about what they'd be doing, the knife seemed like it would be the least useful. Knives wouldn't do anything against Thread, and there were way too many flits to kill them all (not that that was actually an option, or at least not one that would go over well). The flamethrower and the torch were potentially redundant, but each would have its own advantages and disadvantages. The water pack...one thing that occurred to her was that the water could be used to wash off dye - using it to 'treat' wounds - but that might be considered cheating.
After running through her choices, she decided to go with the most straightforward of the four, and reached for a small flamethrower...but hesitated when one of the other girls started yapping and telling them all what to do. Her kneejerk reaction was to resent this - who'd put her in charge? - but it would be easier to work with a group rather than on her own. And if they were going to be dividing duties, then she wanted the easy job. Or, well, probably easier than burning thread.
"Fine," she agreed, in a tone that suggested she'd be doing the others a favor by working with them. "I'll take the water, then." After one last second of hesitation, she took a portable water pack.

The respectful nod Hus sent Kesin's way didn't quite belay the relief the huntress felt. It'd do her no good to appear nervous and weak before her fellows and before their instructors. Still glancing to the others she waited. At least one of them was on her side, perhaps if she was lucky the others would fall in with the pair and they could work together to see each other safely through.
At least they hadn't all swarmed for the flamethrowers and decided to leave each other to their fates. Still the moment thread stopped falling Hus would have to head for whatever greenery was about and see about putting together some more torches for herself and Kesin since their hands would be free. They could then light their torches from whomever took the torch.
Glancing around Hus tried to get the lay of the land. Her father had always told her that if thread was falling you should get to the water since thread drowned within it's depths. That and her knife could be used to cut reeds for them to use to breath with.
Trying not to fidget she waited on the others to make their choice doing her best to put up a strong front. Though she preferred to sleep until well into the onset of dusk Hus tried her best to remain alert chagrining herself that she'd get some more sleep later. As a hunter she was used to setting her own time and was still chafing somewhat against the set restraints of being a wherhandler candidate. She still wasn't quite entirely sure what to make of the whole thing as she lifted a hand pushing a stray strand of copper orange hair from her face. She certainly wasn't sure what to make of their instructors. For all there threats about no funny tricks Hus was quite certain said restraints didn't apply to them in turn.

Jakarth looked even less impressed as the participants lagged about, one leaping forward with plans before she knew the game and the other simply fell into step. Puffing out her cheeks, she shrugged and held her hand out. A gold flit landed there, to chirp at the woman urgently for a moment before it leaped into the air once more to glide past those assembled.
"Follow Solas. She'll guide you to the range. You've three minutes to get into the bush before the simulation begins. Your task, as I said, is to rout the thread that's gotten through." As she spoke, a veritable swarm of flitters descended upon the vats and dripping, soggy faux-thread was pulled into the air and taken Between, presumably into the bush.
Once they'd gotten into the bush, the sound of wings was all over, impossible to track and in the gathering darkness their shapes were exceedingly difficult to make out. Wet things had been tossed all over, the threads sliding across the branches and leaves here and there but none fell from the sky for it was strewn across the ground, gathered in piles... and being dragged and carried along by flits who'd made a game of this entire thing.
======
SPECIAL EVENT: each roll of 1d10 shows how well you're reacting to the thread that's been scattered about - you must locate and destroy it. It only occasionally drops from the sky - the vast majority of it infests the ground cover. Compare your roll to the roll of this post. If you botch (ie, roll a 1) you are scored. If you botch three time, subtract 8 points (yes, even if you've zero).

Hus was rather cursing her luck at the moment, but she had made her choice she had to stick with it and stick with her plan. As she followed the gold into the bush Hus kept her eyes peeled trying to search out a semi clean branch she could cut and turn into a torch. Hopefully the others would stick with the plan and not all scatter like a group of wherries with a dragon set upon them.
As they stepped into the bush though Hus let out a low string of curses as she felt something wet brush against her arms. Great a few seconds in and already scored. Well she'd better make the best of it as she shied away from where the spot where scoring had happened hoping the others would be close. "Watch out there's some on this bush." She called to them not wanting any of the others to stumble into the same spot she had.

Kesin didn't miss the unimpressed look from Jakarth, and frowned in turn, but quickly dismissed her annoyance. They were going to do this their way, and they would sharding well pass!
...or, well, maybe not all of them.
"Well, that was fast," the blue-eyed girl said dryly as Hus cursed, and made sure to carefully avoid getting into the same trouble. "Don't get tangled up in here before we even start." All this bush reminded her of home, except with fewer caprines and a lot more flits with soggy threads.
She quickly became glad she hadn't taken a flamethrower, after all, since most of the thread was scattered around instead of actively falling. It would probably not have gone over well if she'd set their surroundings on fire. Instead, she managed pretty well with what she had!

After that, Kes fell quiet for a moment, letting herself focus on the task at hand while Hus dealt with her 'threadscore,' and hopefully didn't sustain any more. She moved carefully, on high alert in the darkness in hopes of avoiding being dyed herself. She very nearly stepped on a clump of thread, but saw movement at the last moment and hopped to the side. She looked a little silly doing so, certainly, but she looked better doing that than she would have if she'd stepped on the dyed bunch of thread...or the flit that was dragging it.
She couldn't make out its color for certain, but it trilled at her, and she frowned back and made a shooing motion. "Go on, then. Outta the way."
With trouble averted, she went back to work.

small flamethrower
Cesoï looked at the two items left then selected the small flame thrower. She hoped to not really ever need such an item but at the same time she chose it for it seems more efficient then the torch. The girl softly backed off and even away from the others; not far but not close enough should the gathering make an easier target. If there was one thing she feared it was handling fire but she didn't want the others to assume her as weak or useless.
She then looked abut to try and think how she would use the item most effectively. Cesoï followed and looked int the darkness as she walked calmly; she feared messing up but worried more for the harm if she hurt a flit or person.
(as a fyi I'm walking the grad stage for college this friday and then I'm going to my grandmothers so I wont have internet there sorry if I miss anything.)

Cesoï trend softly into the bush staying close to see the others but still with distance for she didn't know how she would act to thread even if it was fake.
She watched Kesin and Hus as she was trying to watch her steps. She listened to the sounds since listening was a strong point for her; her listening helped to get a feel for the flits on the ground and the noise they made dragging the thread.

Turning to look at the third girl, who seemed to be lagging behind just a bit, Kes advised, "Be careful with that thing, if you use it here in the bush. There's a lot more than thread out here that could catch fire."
And that would be a spectacular way to fail this drill, wouldn't it? Get rid of all the thread by starting a wildfire. Shaking her head, and continuing to try to keep tabs on the others while also focusing on what she was doing - which sounded harder than she actually found it to be - Kesin pressed forward.

Reports from the flits started rolling in almost immediately as they dragged and hung the thread and made it come alive in the woods. Two of the apprentices had already been scored within meters of their entering the stand. Jakarth groaned audibly and went to stand by Brizan.
The gold that had lead the group into the wood reappeared at Jakarth's side and received the next set of instructions... moments later, the flits swarmed an area to the left of the main group. The thread that Kesin doused in water disappeared with the soaked flit as it went Betwee to collect more of the fun and squishy stuff. The water, however, wouldn't last long is sprayed at random...
The flame thrower Cesoi selected clunked and spluttered upon her first use of it, reluctantly letting forth a belch of sour air and a few sparks that leaped upon the greenery. The thread scored her too, leaving a bring red line of dye across exposed skin as well as fabric.
======
SPECIAL EVENT: roll 1d10 as per normal. You are chasing/routing the nest that flits have now simulated. Based on your roll, you will have either found a decently sized branch for a torch (mortane), a stream for refills (meep), or gotten your flamethrower to function properly (slayer).
Rolls made after this post apply only to this special event - the characters catching up must still catch up, however.

Grabbing the water pack was turning out to be a great idea, one Kesin was glad she'd had! She was already conveniently forgetting that she'd almost grabbed a flamethrower to start with, and had only switched because of Hus' suggestion of a plan. That plan had yet to come together anyway, so really, it hardly mattered.
What did matter, though, was that she was running low on water...and that Cesoi was having trouble with her flamethrower. "Try not to spark a fire," she grumbled, "I'm gonna go refill this thing somewhere." Hopefully for dousing thread, not putting out fires!
Falling quiet, she stepped carefully, keeping an ear out for the familiar sound of running water. Finally, she found a stream, and bent to fill her pack.

Hus shifted looking around with care knife at the ready. Most of the branches and area was already caked with thread and the flits were swarming. They were more likely to injure themselves just out of their inability to see then anything else. That's when she spotted it. Not a few steps to her left was a decent sized clean looking branch. Wasting no time she pulled the knife slicing and breaking the branch from the trees before turning to Cesoi.
For a second or two she just stared at the girl as if weighing in if she really wanted to do this. There was a good chance the girl could miss and hit her rather then the stick. Finally though gathering her courage she hald the branch away from herself. "Mind lighting this so we can see?" She asked before turning to see Kesin wandering off looking for a place to refill. Muttering silent curses she shook her head. Oh well she'd made a torch for the other girl the moment she could. Hopefully she wouldn't bump into anything she shouldn't out here.

Finding your way around in the dark wasn't so bad once your eyes adjusted, something Kesin knew from experience, and she wasn't worried about wandering off on her own. She'd often watched her family's herds at night, and as long there was some moonlight, it wasn't too bad. The cover made it a little harder, since the light didn't come through as well, but it wasn't causing problems for her yet. She just moved slowly and carefully, and so far, had also gotten lucky. If asked, though, she'd've passed it all off as skill.
Once her pack was full again, she came back to the others...just long enough to check in, anyway. "They've gone that way, I think," she said, pointing the way. The flits weren't exactly the quietest thread-carriers ever. "We should get moving."
Kes was doing well so far, and that lent itself to a single-minded determination to get this done and over with. Without waiting for a response, she moved off in search of thread to douse. She didn't want to hang around and wait for them to get the flamethrower and torch going, anyway, as she'd only have to readjust to the darkness if she got a good look at a light source.
