↘OFFICER JAY XANXUS↙

________________▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬_▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬_▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Belvanue. A territory in the Southern Isles. Not the best place to be in all of The Otherworld. It was a small place, crowded with good-for-nothing ruffians, thugs, and pirates. All of them had their sticky hands ready to steal anything from any unfortunate, unguarded passerby. Shouts and fights broke out in some areas from time to time, gamblers were betting in another corner, and shady, unknown dealings were going on in another. Yet, despite all of this, Officer Jay Xerxes was there, fully suited in a white collared, buttoned up shirt with a black tie and a long black jacket that hung from his shoulders, acting more like a cloak than a jacket. Feathers hung from the back of his head and rest over his left shoulder. The badge that proved that he was an officer was neatly hidden within the inside of his jacket. With his looks, he earned the name "Officer Scar." Scars littered his face and his crimson eyes glared at the path ahead of him. All of this just added to the officer's intimidation level, but, whether you can believe it or not, he actually didn't want to kill every person who made eye contact with him. The officer took a folded letter out from the pocket inside his jacket and unfolded it, re-reading the contents once more.

Dear Officer Jay Xanxus,
There have been some rather... troublesome things going on in Belvanue. Although we understand that many shady things happen there, something suspicious has caught our attention, and we want you to make sure nothing is going on there that can threaten anything outside of Belvanue. After we are satisfied with your reports, you may return to working under Colonel Henry Cosgrove. That is all.

"I must finish this quickly." Jay muttered under his breath as he folded the letter again and stuffed it back into his pocket. He had come here alone, and that made him uneasy despite his confidence in finishing such an easy task. The fact that he was stuck here, in Belvanue, where he had to keep his guard up even when sleeping, with no one to trust, was troubling. Just so he can keep his guard up, his glares bore into the unfortunate ones who dared to gawk at his scarred face, and many cowered, though even more seemed to take it as a challenge or acknowledged him as another tough guy. Either way, the officer just wanted to get something to eat and drink first, then a place to sleep in. With a shady place like this, he didn't expect anything great here. He wouldn't mind sleeping on dirt and eating some beans in a can. He was already used to it, since soldiers pretty much do that all the time.

Setting his mind to the things he would do, the officer made a dead-on straightaway to an inn, which also had its own little tavern. He sat at a table, sitting silently as his crimson eyes surveyed the area, watching every person, yet not focusing on anyone. A barmaid came and took his simple order of stew with bread and some wine. He was surprised at how quickly the barmaid came back with his order, but showed no change in expression as he gave a nod of thanks. Jay returned to surveying the people as he ate a spoonful of stew and ripped off a piece of bread with his sharp teeth. More gamblers, more fights, and more annoying shouts and insults being thrown around. It was ticking the quiet officer off, but he paid no mind to the usual riffraff. Instead, he gulped some wine and continued to quietly observe.

Geren stepped into the inn and looked around for a fight. The only people that he hadn't fought before were the barmaids. That's when he noticed the Officer."Ah new meat." Geren whispered to himself while getting ready for a fight. He walked over and sat down at the same table as the Officer. "You're new around here aren't you? I could tell; this is always the first place new meat comes. You're gonna have to watch your head in here. This is where the most fights happen." Geren said in a polite and friendly tone.

Jay ripped part of the bread with his sharp teeth again, a spoonful of stew following after. He took another long swig on the wine, finishing the rest, and asked a barmaid to get him another. That was when a man, well, half-owl, half-man, came and sat at his table, speaking to him. The half-owl even called him 'new meat.' How insulting. "I'm not entirely new to Belvanue. It's not my first time. I know how things go around here." He said, speaking in short, brief sentences. He'd rather not waste him time with someone who thinks he's someone new around a dangerous place and could be pushed around. The scars on his face should be enough to prove that he could fight pretty well, and the scars all over his body would just back it up.

Polite and friendly as the half-man sounded, Jay knew better than to take it as sincere. Who knew what intentions laid in the mind of those within Belvanue? Especially someone who seemed to be extremely familiar, more than himself, about this place. Everyone was to be treated as suspicious and shady here at Belvanue, unless he had a fellow soldier or higher ranking officer here. Even then, distance must be kept and guard kept high. The barmaid came back and gave him the wine he ordered and take another swig before looking, though his eyes looked like they were glaring, at the person who occupied the other seat at his table.

"What do you want? Surely you weren't dying to just talk to someone." Jay said, getting straight to the point. He didn't want to waste time chit-chatting with someone shady. Especially since he wanted to return under command of Colonel Henry Cosgrove and go with the troops. He was more used to combat than spying or report, or whatever you wanted to call this little mission. "If you're wanting money or anything, then leave. I ain't giving you jack. Nor am I in the mood to fight today." The officer added, licking clean his sharp teeth of the meat that stuck in between before chomping off another piece of the bread.

Geren leaned back in his chair 'Hmm multiple scars but doesn't want to fight. My best guess would be that he is a soldier. He's not showing his badge of authority so he's either undercover or on leave. But why would anyone come to Belvanue if they were on leave?' "My friend, if I have insulted you I am sorry. I haven't seen you here before so I assumed you were new. I hate to prove you wrong, but I am just talking to you for no reason. Well, I wouldn't say that. I'm actually part of a pirate crew." Geren shows the man his tattoo that symbolizes his ship. A crow surrounded by fire. "I'm one of the crew members of the Wind Breaker. We aren't very respected among this great community of pirates and earning a friend is better than gaining an enemy."

Geren looked around and saw that the three strangers were staring at the two of them. "When you leave be wary. Three men are staring at us and that don't look friendly."

Jay's crimson eyes merely looked at the half-owl as he apologized. He sounded sincere enough, but nevertheless, he could not risk anything. "This is just how I normally speak. Don't worry, I take no offense to your words." Jay assured, quickly draining his second cup. The officer had a high tolerance to alcohol, and it actually kept him rather calm especially if he were in one sort of situation where even he would become overly nervous and such. He quickly told a maid for more one. Two bottles instead of two cups, actually. As she hurried to get what he ordered again, his attention shifted back to the half-owl, who soon showed him a tattoo of a crow surrounded by fire, a proof to show that he was a pirate from a crew named 'Wind Breaker.'

"A pirate, eh? Wind Breaker. Interesting." Jay commented, keeping a mental note in his head to remember the pirate crew name. For all he knew, these bands of pirates could be the cause of the trouble that sent him out here in the first place. The barmaid came back with the two bottles and he gave a nod of thanks before looked back at the half-owl. "Here, drink up. Earning a friend ain't so bad for me, either." Jay added as he slid a bottle of wine over to him before uncorking his own and guzzling it down.

Jay slammed his bottle on the table with a satisfied sigh, relishing the feeling of being able to drink all he can while he could. Drinking on duty when combat could happen anytime wasn't exactly smart, but seeing as how he could at least drink a bit here was welcome. At the mention of three strangers looking at them, Jay looked over and scoffed right in front of their faces. "Wary? Hah. Those scoundrels are no match for me. Perhaps they want a fight? I will if that'll make them leave me alone." He said, taking another gulp of the bottle. "Let them come if they want to."

Geren grabbed the bottle and drank the whole the in seconds flat. "Oh, I don't drink." Geren chuckled at his own joke. "Yeah I'm not a big wig on the ship, but I'm the second best fighter on the ship. The only one who's better than me is the captain. The crew and I saw him take an enemy ship down solo with only his wits, and his sword. A god amongst men when it comes to the battlefield. But don't think that he's cruel; he's actually very nice. He only hunts those who hunt him."

"So, what brings you to Belvanue? Is it these great, law-biding citizens, or are just here to get away from all of the evils of the world?" Geren couldn't hold a straight face and gave a small smirk in the middle of his sentence. "Also, you need to be careful. Apparently there is a ship that has been sinking any boat that it sees. I heard that it can only be seen at dawn."

Jay grinned, revealing his sharp teeth as he watched the pirate taking down the whole bottle in a few seconds. "I can see that. You're supposed to enjoy it, 'cause I sure as hell ain't gonna pay for all the drinks." He said, chuckling, as he continuing to drink his own bottle as well. "Doesn't that make you respected? Strong fighters are respected in crews, aren't they? They sure are from where I'm from." He said, referring to the army, but knowing that he shouldn't run his tongue too much to a man he just met. Especially if that person was a pirate. From Belvanue. Yeah, real great combo. Jay looked down at his unfinished meal and took care of it all, eating up all the stew and chomping the rest of the bread off. He pushed it off to the edge of the table, letting any passing barmaid to take care of it for him.

"Oh? Captain, you say? Must be well respected, then. Sounds like a promising opponent." Jay commented, listening as the half-owl spoke about his captain who, single-handed, took down an enemy ship. "Nice, huh? Rarely hear about pirates like that. Never mind pirate captains." He said, doubt clear in his voice. The scarred-faced officer scratched the back of his head at the question, a story quickly forming in his head in that extremely short amount of time. He was very, very good at lying. "I'd say for both reasons, my friend. Been getting in the evils of the whole of the Otherworld for too long, so I decided to hang around with these law-abiding citizens here, just to release some... you know, stress and anger here. But certainly not on my first day back. After all, I am tired from my journey here." Jay said, noticing the smirk from the other man and couldn't help by play along and do so himself.

Jay raised an eyebrow at the piece of information the pirate gave. "This could prove useful for the army. It may even be related to the problems going on that they wanted me to find out here." The officer thought, running a hand through his hair as he contemplated on how to respond. "Only seen at dawn, eh? Then those boats better get to where they wanna be before dawn, else they'll end up gone. But I personally do not believe that there's this ship going around doing that." He said, leaning back in his chair.

"Why don't you Wind Breakers take down this ship yourselves? Might even have a bounty on them good for the crew. After all, you guys are pretty strong with that kind of captain, yeah?" Jay suggested, raising an eyebrow. This problem could be quickly solved that way. "I keep forgetting to ask you, but what's your name, my friend? You can call me Jay." He said, refusing to introduce his full name in fear of being known of his true identity. Jay wasn't exactly an uncommon name either.

Geren smirked at the man's comment. "Haha I don't expect you to. Another bottle? It's on me. He then called a barmaid over and ordered two more bottles of wine.

Geren tried to hold a straight face while the man told his story, but couldn't have way through."Yes my friend there's always a way to relieve stress right around the corner here in Belvanue."

Geren looked at the scarred-faced man and then leaned back in his chair. "It's understandable for you not to believe. Heck, I hardly believe the story either. It's just a rumor, but I have seen ships disappearing from the docks." As Geren muttered the last part of his sentence he seemed to have a glum look on his face.

"I said I was part of a crew, I never said this crew was any good. Most of us were rag-tag misfits when the captain took us in, myself included. The crew members that were actually good at fighting got up and left us in hopes of finding more treasure. Now the crew is mostly a bunch of punks that can't even handle as sword correctly." Geren now sat hunched-back, chair legs on the ground, and starring at his feet. When asked his nae geren looked up. "My name is Geren, Geren Malic. It's nice ta meetcha Jay.

Jay grinned as the half-owl smirked before ordering two more bottles of wine from a barmaid. "Now that, my friend, is courtesy from a pirate." He said, chuckling before he finished the rest of his first bottle, which honestly only had a few drops of wine left. He put the bottle down and let out a satisfied sigh. "Well, I'll get to relieving some stress tomorrow. Today is for relaxing and getting used to this lovely town again." Jay said, deciding that right on the spot.

The officer's eyes narrowed, a frown coming across his face. "Hmm, disappearing ships, eh?" He muttered, rubbing a scar on his cheek out of habit. "I bet it's just another pirate ship picking on easy prey." Jay said, his crimson eyes glancing over at other men in the tavern, some arguing and getting ready to fight, others already fighting. "With these many lovely citizens, I don't doubt the possibility of that." He added before turning his attention back to the pirate before him.

"What, so all your men are good-for-nothing thieves who can't even fight for himself?" Jay asked, raising an eyebrow. "Huh, great. If only the captain and you can actual handle yourselves, then how do you expect to get any treasure, or even fight others like that? You need to train those little rats how things are done! Show them how to fight!" He exclaimed, slamming a fist down on the wooden table.

The officer sighed, shaking his head. It was like training fresh recruits, so he knew it wasn't going to be easy. However, the task needed to be done in order to take care of that ship that's sinking others. Jay looked at the pirate as he introduced himself. "Pleasure's all mine, Geren." He said, just as the barmaid came back and plopped down the two bottles of wine Geren ordered. Uncorking his bottle, he raised his bottle and smirked. "Cheers, to our acquaintance, buddy."

"Don't relieve your stress too quickly. Put it on someone who isn't worth it might cost you the fight against someone better."

Geren chuckled and looked around the room. "Heh, yes you're probably right. These people aren't the most sympathetic."

"My men are not thieves. I called them punks because they don't yet know what it means to be a pirate. It isn't about stealing and killing; it's about honor and glory. If you become a great pirate you are remmber for years to come, but if you are some military general you are forgotten in a few years. The boys and girls that the captain has recruited just want power, but they're to impatient to learn how to get it. And I don't want these kids to rely on me and the captain for a fight. Geren stopped his rant when noticed that all eyes were now on him. "What are ya all staring at? he demanded and everyone went back to their own buisness. "I'm sorry about that Jay and cheers." Geren said as he raised his bottle to tap Jay's.

"Hmm, that's true." Jay replied, sighing as he leaned on his arms, which were pressed against the table. He listened to Geren rant, talking about how pirates didn't mean stealing and killing, but honor and glory. "Are you kidding me? Pirates?" The officer thought, his eyebrow slightly twitching as he listened. "Sure, great pirates are remembered because they've probably done something so terrible that no one can forget. Maybe stealing a large treasure or capturing a whole town and terrorizing it." He continued in his thoughts, slightly amused that this pirate was defending that pirates were better than military generals. "Generals are only as easily forgotten as pirates if they do nothing worth celebrating. Its just the same with pirates, and yet you're going to say pirates are better?"

Jay chuckled aloud, unable to hide his amusement from his rant. Guess he was the same, considering how he favored the military on 'honor and glory' and being an officer. Then again, he knew almost nothing about pirates, so he decided not to put them down in front of Geren, despite having to listen to him put down the general position. The officer could feel eyes on them, and looked around at the others in the tavern. It grew extremely quiet, save for a few gossiping whispers and the sound of some people still eating their food or drinking their beverages. Well, that didn't surprise the officer as his naturally glaring eyes glared at the people around. The pirate had, in fact, ranted quite loudly.

After Geren's demand, however, everyone went back to what they were doing, the buzz returning as people went back to talking and fighting. Why the brawlers had stopped in the middle of their fight to look at Geren, he didn't understand, but at this point, they were back at it again, so Jay honestly didn't care. "Don't worry. Cheers." He said, tapping Geren's bottle before taking a large swig of it. "But it looks like many would beg to differ with your rant. After all, 'great' pirates that are supposedly remembered for years often did something messed up, not honorable." The officer couldn't help but say to him. After all, he at least deserved to defend the military a little, right?

"Not all pirates are known for bad deeds. Of course I can't fill all of my fingers with good pirates, but there are a few. I need another drink; you want one?"

Geren's plan was to get Jay drunk enough to tell him his plans for being on Belvanue. He had already deduced from his demeanor and looks that this man was a soldier. But while talking to him, Geren did believe that they had become acquaintances.

"So Jay, where are ya from?" said Geren with a sly smirk (or as close to a smirk as an owl can get).

"I guess that's true." Jay said, shrugging. There were corrupted generals, so why not good pirates? That was good enough for the officer. When Geren asked if you wanted another drink, he paused for a moment, thinking. He only drank a few bottles, and Jay could hold his liquor quite well. Another one wouldn't hurt at all. "All right, but I'll call this my last one. I won't have enough to pay for my drinks on my later nights." He said, hailing a bar maid over to get two more bottles.

Jay turned his attention back to the pirate, noticing a... was that a smirk? It seemed like it. Oh well, but his mind then went to the question he asked him. "I'm from the nicer parts of the Southern Isles, but I've been traveling around so much that that's all I can say is my home." He said honestly, shrugging as the bar maid came back with their bottles. He thanks her and slid Geren's bottle over to him before uncorking his own. Well, if he got drunk, it would be fine for him. The problem is that he'll shapeshift and probably roar and attack random people. Like hell he was going to pay for any damages he made.

"Since you're a pirate, I take it that you're from here, aren't ya? Especially since you seem to know this place like the back of your hand." Jay said, taking a swig from the bottle of wine. "Or were you from somewhere else and came to Belvanue to become a pirate or something?" He asked, his crimson eyes narrowing as his face was slightly hidden behind the bottle as he took another swig. This owl might want something from him. He couldn't trust a guy he just met a little while ago.

Geren laughed at Jay's joke. "Alright alright, no more drinks. I know that from the drinks I've already had that I will have me a hangover tomorrow." Geren now knew that his plan wasn't going to work now, but he secretly felt glad he didn't know if Jay was a soldier or not.

Geren listened very closely to Jay. When Jay said that he's traveled around a lot he had to ask him a question that has always bugged him "Have you ever seen the portal in the Badlands? The one that leads to the human world. What does it look like?"Geren took the bottle Jay had ordered him, uncorked it, and started to drink.

"Me? Well I started out as an orphan, but soon left for something better. I was found on the streets at age 12 by the captain, and since then I've lived as a pirate."

Jay grinned at his mention of hangover, then slightly grimaced as he imagined how his morning was gonna start tomorrow. Great. "Not exactly an ideal condition, but drinking makes it all worth it." He said, chuckling, before leaning forward on the table, using his arms as support. He raised an eyebrow at Geren's question, a frown coming across his face as he waited a few moments before he answered. "Nah, I've never seen that portal before. I have heard about it from other people who've seen it, though. Though it's not like they really could explain it very well." Jay said, shrugging, as he gulped down most of his bottle.

"I might check it out myself some day, but for now, I'm in Belvanue." Jay added, his crimson eyes scanning the people around them. An uneasy feeling hit the officer, even though he was used to being in places like this. Naturally, anyone would feel uneasy here, because of all the dark people and shady business that goes around, but he felt something... different. Something was off here, and he couldn't tell what it was. The officer stopped thinking about it when the pirate spoke again.

Jay raised an eyebrow at his story, contemplating. "Hmm, I see. Nice of the captain to take you in." He said, thinking the captain was a rather good guy, considering all the things Geren was saying about him. "You've been a pirate since that age? You're pretty much a veteran pirate now." Another swig of the drink, another clunk as it hit the wooden table.
