This is something my friends and I go out and do on Friday nights. :I And it is a stupid word with ugly connotations. I shun labels. Anyway I'm playing a Pegasus driven insane by friendship deprivation, who completely lost it when the sky started fighting itself after the sisters began to war over who would rule the cycle of day and night. In his delusions, he invented a One True God who is angry with the false goddesses. Nope, not a Brony or Pegasister.
I do get to work with a bunch at Califur coming up, though. I hear we're having a MLP Panel to welcome the group into the fandom/bridge relations between the two fandoms. The announcement got a few mixed results, since not everyone in either fandom is sure that they want the other fandom to be mixed with them.
Odd how that works.
Don't give me the breakdown of the words 'brother' and 'pony'; I get that. Someone please explain to me the label of 'brony', please. What is meant by that label? What are the connotations? Who is classified as falling under that label? How far into the MLP fandom do you have to be in order to be classified as one?
How many embrace/shun the label?

I consider myself a big fan of the show, but not a brony/pegasister. But that's just what I think about myself. I like the show for what it is; a generally well written show for young girls that boys can enjoy too. The show is on the whole well written and fun, with some great flash animation to boot. I think it's a very valuable show to have as a quality kids show that all genders and ages can like and watch together.
However, I personally think that the internet fandom overblows it. Just like with Homestuck, if you push something on everyone saying it's the BESTEST THING EVER, you're gonna shoo people away or leave them disappointed when the show doesn't make all of their hopes and dreams come true. Not every episode is good, it varies from writer to writer, and not every character or show appeals to everyone. That's just how things work.
Though in general, I try to encourage people to see the value in a show like this, even if they don't like it themselves.
I can't say for sure why the label exists, though I can hazard a guess that if boys ban together and make a group they can be a member of with pride, it would lessen the impact of being embarrassed for watching the show in the first place. Perhaps the same applies to older girls. But don't quote me on that.
I don't have anything against people who identify with those terms, mind you. I just don't like the terms myself.

I would've given my standard response, but it seems that got worked out by the TC. razz
(Typically, I see someone say "Pegasister", I post a picture of the Whitewings from FE1/2/3/11/12 and am like "I'm cool with that.")
And do I sense a Change Seal from Nino over there? (Well, assuming she's a L10+ Sage at this point... one might consider... Dark Pegasus (Knight?)? Otherwise, Flying Mage)
Personally, I'm no fan of MLP at all.
