Rinh’Kofi was running as fast as her legs allowed. She carried a long bone with some meat on it for a while but it didn’t take long for the lioness to drop it in order to make a proper escape. Escape? Why yes, she was escaping. One quick glance over her shoulder told her that she had eight hyenas on her tail and the little buggers didn’t seem to be in the mood to stop just yet.
Granted, she had taken their kill – but what self-respecting lion didn’t steal a kill every now and then? It was all nice and good when you took what you wanted from a couple of hyenas but unfortunately the cackling beasts had a tendency to multiply rather quickly. Two had become four, four turned to seven and pretty soon Rinh had been seriously outnumbered by an angry mob of starving things. In a way she was quite lucky that only eight had chosen to chase after her though she still found that number somewhat intimidating. Things would probably turn ugly soon because she wouldn’t be able to run for much longer. In her mind she was already planning her next move, picturing herself turning brusquely and grabbing one of the smelly beasts. If she could injure one or two of them seriously enough, maybe the others would give up and return to their pack.

Lucivar was out wandering again. He wasn't viking, doing so without his band was unthinkable.. but he had more of a wunderlust than most cats and he spent almost as much time roaming the lands as he did within his pride's boarders. This time he wasn't even really looking for anything, just out stretching his legs and getting a bit of exercise, since it had been some time since he last took his reavers on a viking, mostly because he had been injured in a scuffle with a band of rogues during the last raid and though he was now fit and healthy, his two best friends and unofficial seconds had warned him not to push his healing body too fast or risk becoming permanently damaged. So the young Captain had taken to going on long treks across the savannah in order to keep himself fit, and planned on going Viking with his reavers again soon.
The sound of baying reached him from some distance away and he huffed with irritation. Hyenas again.. the damn thing were like sand, everywhere they shouldn't be and they got under ones coat, irritating the living daylights out of him. Only the odd one or two showed any kind of decency, but they were rarer than a monsoon on the savannah.
The sounds gradually came closer and Lucivar turned, watching a shadow race towards him. But instead of a hyena, it resolved itself out of the heat haze and into the shape of a rather comely lioness. One brow arched upwards over sky blue eyes as he watched her come charging towards him. Then he caught sight of the dust cloud behind her.. That was the source of the baying. Feeling his hackles rise he lowered his head, lips lifting in an annoyed snarl. What nasty creatures were these to chase a single lioness? As she streaked past, Lucivar gathered himself and then launched forwards, barreling into the small band of miserable scavengers. Within moments the bays turned to howls of pain as the large Captain laid into the scrawny bodies. Two went flying, thrown bodily across the sand by the powerful male. Dust flew up as a violent scuffle erupted, the hyenas turned from attack to defending themselves as the lion waded in among them, blood and fur flying as he grabbed and threw another even as two more jumped onto his back, their nasty fangs sinking deep into his fur.

Dusty brown coat. Pale mane. Blue eyes.
Rinh ran past the lion at top speed, acknowledging his presence only after the cringing whelps had started. She turned abruptly, determined to help her helper but… there really wasn’t much she could do at that point. Two of the hyenas had been sent flying, a few others were bleeding profusely and still the lion wasn’t stopping. Rinh only sprinted towards the bloody group when two of the beasts landed on the lion’s back and not because she thought he needed her help but because this lioness didn’t really like to feel useless. She jumped and grabbed one of the hyenas by the scruff of the neck and shook the smelly thing as she growled viciously. In her mind, there was absolutely nothing to fear now. Only a brainless creature would mess with a fully-grown lion and with him by her side, Rinh was feeling somewhat... invincible.
Out of the corner of her eye she could see some of the beasts retreating while a couple lay motionless on the blood soaked ground. She finally let go of the hyena and watched it wobble away right before she felt a bite on her hind leg. Roaring angrily, Rinh turned like green branch and grabbed the offender by the throat, clamping her jaws shut with the strength she had. And that one hyena never did move again.

A roar of fury more than of pain erupted from him as fangs tore at his flesh and he twisted round, tearing off one of the hyenas even as the female he had spotted being chased raced up and grabbed the second, its claws raking his flesh as it tried to cling onto him more in defense of itself than any intent on hurting him.
Soon enough it was over and dust slowly settled back to the blood-splattered ground. Shaking his head to rid himself of the sickly sweet taste of hyena-blood, he turned and faced the female that had returned to aid him. Despite the fresh wounds that racked across his nose and along his flanks, and the blood that decorated his maw and chest, he somehow manged to look more friendly than threatening, and the warm, charming smile he gave her would not have been out of place on a lazy spring afternoon.
"I take it you are unhurt?" He asked, his deep rich voice surprisingly polite considering the bloodbath that had just taken place. He was a tall lion, fit rather than bulky and clearly he was a male who knew perfectly well how to take care of himself, from his obvious skill in battle to the easy way he stood, as if nothing could truly worry him. And yet there was real personality in those blue eyes, proving he was more than just dumb muscle and sharp claws.

Rinh took a few steps away from the lion as soon as the fighting ended and her eyes dropped to the hyena she had killed. She felt sorry for it but at the same time found the whole situation ridiculous. "Foolish" was too soft a word to describe the cackling idiots' desire to fight her and a fully-grown lion with only eight of them. Her blue eyes returned to the lion who seemed to have become more pleasant all of a sudden.
“Well, that was…” she started at the same time as the lion spoke. The first words said by a stranger often dictated the kind of meeting they’d have so she relaxed a little. Looks could be very deceiving but Rinh didn’t think the male was a threat to her. After that exuberant display of aggression, he actually looked pretty friendly now. “I am well. Thanks for the help.”
She paused, smirking just a little.
“Do you do this often? It looked like you’re used to fighting hyenas every day.” It might’ve been an odd way to compliment his skills but Rinh wasn’t one to give praise easily.

He saw her glance down at the discarded body and his expression softened a little, not for the hyenas.. as far as he were concerned they got themselves into trouble and he'd not waste his emotions mourning them... but he did regret that look she wore briefly. Battle was to be fought between equals.. and a small band of hyenas were not equal to one Myrsky Syntynyt Captain.
Chuckling as they started to talk at the same time, he dipped his head, acknowledging her reply. "I am glad." One brow lifted slightly at her smirk in slight amusement. Lucivar enjoyed a female who spoke her mind and it seemed as if this lioness was far from the retiring type.
"Well.. not battling hyenas, no... But I am a career soldier. " He paused then added by way of an explanation. "I am a Captain in the Myrsky Syntynyt." He gave a faint roll of one lean shoulder in a type of shrug, as if such a position was of little consequence. He was not being falsely modest... there were many captains in his pride, but to attain the position one had to prove themselves to the other warriors. Lucivar was very young to hold such an honored position but he had never let himself grow complacent about his skills. Which was the reason he was out here, keeping himself fit while his latest set of injuries healed...
Smiling back at her in that easy manner of his, the blue-eyed male tipped his head away from the blood-soaked area, silently asking if she wished to accompany him to the near by watering hole. "What made them come after you like that anyway? They were really mad about something." He asked, curious.

“Ah, a pride lion then…” Rinh said mysteriously and it would be impossible to tell if she considered it to be a positive or a negative thing. She’d never heard of his pride before but anyone who knew her would assume the small revelation didn’t particularly please the lioness as she usually hated prides on principle. Too many rules and too many stupid old customs, that’s how she saw them. Of course, she wasn’t about to be honest with a complete stranger – even if he did have a rather charming smile. “Is it close? Why did you leave your pride?” She almost tried to avoid answering his question and instantly change her status from damsel-in-distress to thief-on-the-run but she was finding it really hard to outright lie to the lion.
“Well… I borrowed their pack’s kill.” She said lightly, stepping closer to a fallen hyena. “I didn’t really think they’d chase me this far. There are better reasons to die for than half a gazelle, I think.”

Lucivar couldn't suppress the amused grin that curled across his maw at her words. Clearly she wasn't exactly bowled over with enthusiasm at the mention of a pride. But at least he could ally some of her fears.
"It is quite far away from here. I like to travail." He quirked a brow, chuckling lightly. "But no, I haven't left it. I come and go as I please. I will return soon enough, but for now I am enjoying exploring this area." He nudged his chin towards the wide open spaces all around them.
A look of surprise and then amusement flashed over his expression at her confession, before his deep, rumbling but pleasant laugh escaped. "Well.. that is certainly one way to annoy them. But it seems you lost what you risked their wrath for." Watching her he smiled, a half-grin that was both wry and experienced. he had done the same thing himself before, though had more success it seemed. Still, she had lost her meal and he was hungry.
"What about coming hunting with me? I should imagine your still hungry. I certainly am."

“Sounds like a good place… if you can leave when you feel like it. There aren’t many like that.” Rinh had to admit that such a place did sound far less stuffy than most prides she’d heard of before.
She was glad the lion didn’t react negatively to the reason she’d found herself being chased by a group of hyenas but she had eaten a good amount before the annoying things had pushed her away and she wasn’t really hungry now – actually, she hadn’t been that hungry even before she’d tried to steal the gazelle but that was beside the point. His offer was the perfect excuse to keep the lion close without having to be honest about what she was thinking.
“Sure, let’s go catch something.” Oh dear, she was no Seer but she predicted a bursting stomach in her future… “I’m Rinh’Kofi by the way. Rinh is enough. Just lead the way.”

The lean male grinned. "It is. You live with brothers and sisters, but one's bloodline or birth does not dictate your life, you fail or succeed by your own paw. You only win what you deserve." It was obvious that despite currently being a long way from home, the male loved his pride and was not thinking of leaving.
When she responded positively to his offer, he flashed her a bright smile and chuckled. "A pleasure, Rinh. I'm Lucivar." Turning he set off across the plains, matching his own stride to hers so they moved side-by-side as they went in search of suitable prey.

Rinh wasn’t planning on joining a pride but she decided to keep this one in mind. Pride lions were far from unbiased but, at least so far, the male’s pride sounded like an interesting place even if it probably had some faults the lion had failed to mention. They all did.
“Lucivar.” She repeated slowly, allowing the name roll like honey on her tongue as she followed after the lion. - The End -
