They don't necessarily have to be exuberant or bubbly - all they need to do is be able to contest with the fellow when he's taking things a few notches above the norm. They need to be able to chew down his ear and voice out their distastes instead of going behind his back and spreading rumors about it. However, his ideal significant other should also be caring enough to lend their lap or shoulder for him to rest on as he brainstorms through all of the frivolous things that go about in his head.
