It was always a good habit to check out all the local 'competition' and to know all the places one could find supply. Antiques were everywhere, and she wasn't present at every estate auction, no, not by far. She didn't know everyone in high society either to convince every little old lady in a mink stole that if their friend was looking to clear up the parlor to call her first before arranging for other sale options.

This one had a clean, respectable look. It was in a clean....respectable neighborhood. She was clean, though tank tops were debatably 'respectable'. They could deal with it if there was a problem. A shirt was a shirt was a shirt, and if they made a fuss about it's lacking middle-America panache then she'd give them something to oogle by taking it off.

The inside was much more promising- the store was deeper than it was wide, aisles stretching back to walls with large paintings in extreme gilt frames. The layout was decently organized even- furniture together and separate from vintage clothing and toys, glassware, china, magazines...everything she could hope to find. She only eyed the aisles a minute, planning a path of attack for later. First...the register. A fine piece of male flesh manning the station. Decent shade of flaxen blonde, pretty aryan features, and eyes that looked refreshingly sharp compared to the humdrum glaze of the general public.

"Worker ant or owner of the establishment?" She quipped on her approach. It was possible enough that a trust-fund pretty, or internet entrepreneur could own a business...unusual the choice of one if it were so. He looked like he could be the upper-echelon espresso-and-oxygen bar sort with a hotwire into wallstreet and six girlfriends on speed dial.

Jett was, to be fair, a good worker. He enjoyed his job and usually put his all into it; he kept the shelves stocked, kept the store tidy, was always by the phone, and hardly ever turned a customer away. Today had been a vastly boring day; he’d made a handful of sales early in the morning and then hit a dry spot. He was used to a lack of customers in the middle of the day; usually he found the most people came early in the morning or right as he was trying to close.

Most people coming in, however, did not look like this one.

Jett had found himself checking his stocks and skimming through old texts and emails while he tried to clear his phone out, so perhaps did not look like the best employee at the time. Glancing up when he heard the woman speak, he gave her a quick look over. His curiosity was piqued instantly and he lowered the phone in his hand and sat up straight.

“A little bit of both but I'll lay claim to neither,” he answered; he was far from a mere worker ant, and yet he did not lay claim to the store. His boss had often jested that when it was his time to retire, he had no intention of selling the place and would be more than willing to shift ownership to Jett. “Are you looking for anything in particular, anything I can help you with?”

“Cryptic and elusive. A tight nit operation?“ Inheritance of some sort? He might be the son or nephew or whatever of the owner then. That would explain the apparent …somewhat lethargic attendance to the store and motivated attendance to his phone. Typical of the youth, anymore. He didn’t look THAT young though. Whether or not he was legitimate jail-bait was in the air so far.

“Furniture, Georgian, preferably American make since we’re standing on U.S. soil. Though if you have a particularly authentic …rare European piece, I’ll have a look. So much stuff early imported wasn’t top of the line it isn’t worth looking at, but there’s the occasional estate that paid the top dollar as well as the shipping. “

“If a piece has seen better days, it isn’t an issue.” She held out a long-fingered hand in a more formal greeting, “Marinus.”

Hopefully he would have a firm grip. There was little more disappointing that all the posing youth who didn't understand or appreciate the effective social communication of the handshake - it told everything about someone's self-esteem. “I’ve been to most of the antiquarian’s in the yellow pages, but I’m still working my way down the list. So far yours appears one of the more organized.”

There was no denying that Jett liked a customer who knew what they wanted; it was a hell of a lot easier than guiding old women or novice collectors through the aisles to help them find something that appealed to them. And with a taste for Georgian furniture and American make? Well, hell, he was liking this woman already.

He extended his hand to shake hers and offered a firm shake. “Jett,” he introduced. “And I can guarantee you that we are not only among the more organized, we also have the largest authentic selection. The establishment has been in business for nearly half a century and in all that time there’s been a total of eight unsatisfied customers, one of which who, in browsing our selection had himself a little heart attack. Out of joy, I’m sure, but he didn’t seem in any hurry to come back.”

With this, he dropped his hand and flashed her a charming smile he’d perfected sometime during his high school years. “And if you’ve got a taste for Georgian furniture, we’ve actually got a few pieces we’ve been sitting on for a while. Are you looking for bedroom furniture, dining room, living room…? We’ve got a few chairs, two writing desks, a few side tables…Some of the larger things are in back, but you’re free to take a look here and then we can figure things out from there,” he said, gesturing towards some of the pieces on display.

"Fifty years isn't so bad for a country with only two-hundred-thirty odd years to its constitution." His smile was satisfactory, to be sure, "Authenticity is better augmented rather than supplemented- what are your sources usually for buying? Local Estates? Destiny City’s historic quarter is not as wide as one might hope for the Appalachian Mountains and the East coast.”

“Or any inroads with the museums?” That would be a welcome bonus if they did. Referrals for pieces that were museum-interest level, but that the museum didn’t want to buy…that could be profitable for both of them. No use getting hopes too high. Fifty years wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t very long either. That meant the shop was from the 1960, comparably to some establishments up in Boston that had been in operation since the 1870s or earlier. But even having Georgian pieces…that was a start for something that was the brain child of the FreeLove and tie-dye era.

“Oh, no, you mistake me. I’m not interested in a specific single piece. I wish to see all of them. My budget for business is flexible, and if there are multiple pieces I’m interested in from a source, I buy them all.”

“In a business of finite availability and demand, it is best to buy things when found rather than coming back later and coming back to an empty space where someone else already purchased it.”

Jett nodded approvingly; if she was looking for multiple pieces, all the better. There was still plenty of room in the shop, though only so much furniture could be showcased in the area before it started to get cluttered. From the way she spoke, Jett figured Marinus knew a fair share about the furniture she was looking for. Georgian furniture—most furniture in general—wasn’t exactly his specialty, but he tried to stay at least slightly educated in as many fields as possible so that he could assist all sorts of customers.

“My boss—Jacoby Winchester—is the one in charge of stocking the store and usually likes to keep his sources hush-hush to make sure competition doesn’t work its way in, but in the broad picture, yes. He’s got ins with a good number of reputable dealers. His niece works in a museum two states over and his aunt before her, and more than a few local estates have his number at the top of their lists. But, regardless of where a piece comes from, there’s always paperwork and extensive research done to verify authenticity. If you’re not looking for anything specific, then feel free to take your time. I’ll go pull up the catalog on the computer so you can see the records if you like.”

He tilted his head, glancing towards the furniture. Of the ones displayed, he couldn’t really see how they would match together in the same room. “Are you looking to add for a personal collection or did you have something else in mind?”

Good. That is promising.

"I'm a professional restoration and conservation artist; furniture is my specialty - dismantling, re-gluing, woodworking, glass work, inlay, leather and fabric re-upholstering, stripping and refinishing. I only use natural , traditional materials to ensure future artisans can easily repair over top what I've done if the occasion arises. So I'm often looking for new pieces to entertain me with techniques and challenges. "

"Last week I finished a Edwardian Bijouterie table from Milton in the UK , marquetry inlaid mahogany. Decorated with gilt metal mounts to the knees that were season cracked. No working lock or key, so I had to whip up new ones in brass."

She walked down the aisle, trailing off while tasks claimed attention. He had things to pull up and likely as not wasn't into the nitty-gritty of the techniques trade. It was idle chatter, anyway, which meant it wasn't necessary. The problem with shops that were highly organized was that they also usually only showed pieces that were in fair or better condition already. Show floors were for casual buyers who wanted usability immediately catered to. She could restore these, but the margin of profit was almost nonexistent. The bow front hanging corner cupboard, though, was a handsome piece.

1820, oak, missing its handles and the stain is worn from hand use. But the wood is overall sound and fine-grained. The price tag was usd 1060, which was more or less reasonable for turning a profit and ensuring serious buyers. She returned to the front and the ....helpful young man, "Is the corner cupboard imported or native? I have a smoking lounge it might work out for...the wood matches one of the humidors."

Ah, a professional restoaration and conservation artis; that certainly explained how well she was commnicating with him. And judging from her listed proficiencies, she was the sort of person Jacoby would have loved to have as a client. Far too often did they come across a piece that had been a little too damaged to resell, though it would have been just gorgeous if it could have been restored.

"I imagine so," he replied from where he stood; the cupboard had been there for a good few months, so his recollection of it wasn't as keen as it should be. "I think we bought it off a woman in Vermont, cleaning out her grandmother's house. Grandmother'd had it for as long as she could remember. Let's see," he murmured, drawing up the documents they had.

A quick glance told him all he needed to know, and he was quick to report, "Still had the papers tucked away in one of the drawers. She bought it from a man up in New York."

He didn't look glassed from the list, which was more promising. "Do you handle any restorations here in shop yourselves?"

"I'll take the piece, " she hated it when people waffled back and forth about purchases in stores, often needing reassurances and cajoling from shopping friends. "Do you prefer plastic, check or cash? I don't make it a hobby to carry around that much on person, but the banks are still open."

She didn't care which really, but she had been to some old-timey establishments that only accepted checks or cash like plastic was some sort of kryptonite.

"Do you smoke?"

"Cash, check or plastic, whatever your heart desires, I can make it happen," he promised. There were certainly preferred methods of payment, but if she was willing to make the purchase, he didn't care how she was paying for it. It wasn't often that someone was willing to dish out more than a grand for something around here; the typical clients were old women looking for nostalgic trinkets, and young men looking to impress their lady friends.

Considering that piece had been there for so long—yeah, he'd make the extra effort to accommodate whatever payment method she preferred. "As for smoking," he paused, and then forced himself to shake his head. "No, not anymore."

Stroud fished her leather bifold out of her pocket and pulled out her card and offered it over. it was the only platinum she carried, and one of only three cards. She didn't like credit cards much, or the institute of creditors, but it did come in as a convenience at some times as one didn't want to be beholden to having a suitcase full of bills handcuffed to one's wrist. As a matter of course, she offered over her driver's license with it as identification since the purchase was pricey.

While he processed them she put on a brief mock frown before clearing it again to a pleasant smile, "Pity that. Health conscious? I've got a luxury House of Crowns Twist Flake tobacco imported from London that arrived just a couple of days ago. You'd be comfortable on the Queen Anne chaise, it looked, with a holder and a cigarette."

Platinum card? Now that was fancy. A quick scan of the license and card—and a glance up for identification purposes—was all Jett needed. He reached under the counter to open up the drawer and retrieved a relatively bulky terminal; neither he nor his boss were particularly skilled when it came to the use of highly technological products, however it was simple enough to use. He'd only just put in the freshly charged battery yesterday, and considering it had been used once since then it was no surprise that it flickered on almost immediately. He fiddled with it for a mere few seconds before swiping the woman's card. It seemed like he had experience with the device; it didn't take him long to get things set up. Something like that. Had a woman nagging me," he replied to her inquiry, unwilling to confess that it was simply a mother worrying for her too young, too rebellious son. He'd stopped to humor her; he didn't have any resolve once the tears hit her eyes. Not smoking didn't mean he didn't miss it, though. He'd never sampled the like by which Stroud spoke of, though she'd already presented herself as a woman with fine tastes. "She put up a good argument. I haven't had a light in a while, and I don't imagine that'll be changing any time soon." Unfortunately, it seemed; there was just a hint of disappointment in his voice. There was a short series of beeps and then Jett flipped over the terminal so it was facing the woman. "If you could sign, please," he said, handing her the styles; the price he'd inputted was printed in the top corner of the screen, and there was a little line indicating where she needed to plant her signature.

Signatures were the work of a moment - hers a practiced, precise cursive with sharp terminations of the loops and flourished capital S and M. After that, she pulled a card case from her pocket and slid a silk-finished, hot foil and die-cut round edged business card onto the counter, "If 'a woman' and her badgering is all that is needed to stop you, maybe cajoling be all that is needed to make you fun again, like a kiss for sleeping beauty. "

"My number and address are on the card. If you're interested, and also for the delivery of the piece. Any time is fine. I'll have cash ready for the delivery charges. "

(( end of purchase seems a good end point/segway to leaving for Stroud? If you wanted to wrap Jett? ))

Jett grinned. "Maybe," he replied, though severely doubted either of the two influential women in his life would be pushing him to pick up a cigarette again. As he withdrew the terminal, he lifted her card, glanced it over and nodded. A few more buttons pressed, he printed out a receipt and handed it to her. "I can have it delivered this Thursday, sometime between four and five. I'll call if I'm running late." Not that he had any intention of such. He offered another smile. "It's been a pleasure doing business with you. Do come back again some time."
