It was amazing what a hot shower could do to improve someone's mood. She was looking forward to a hot, scalding shower with real shampoo and conditioner - and she'd be able to brush her hair with her own brush, and put on her own clothes, and it was going to be wonderful. Sasha had been pretty lucky in finding lapses in the communal showers where there weren't other people in there, fortunately for her.

Today she was only hoping that the luck would hold out, just this one last time.

As she usually did, Sasha called out before traipsing into the showers. The last thing she wanted to was to see someone half-naked or worse and so far the practice of giving a quick, "Hello?" into the room had saved her no less than three times.

Please, let there be no answer, please, please.

Jerry had showered maybe once since their return. He had been wary of the communal showers back when they weren't in close confined spaces, but now? It had been a nightmare. Thankfully, it had been an odd hour where most people were at lunch or up above ground on call, and for once, he had had the shower space to himself.

His hair was really getting untidy. His grandmother was probably rolling in her grave.

For a brief, whisper-induced moment, he had the mental image of her crawling out of said grave. He dropped the comb.

It had been tricky, getting the hang of standing and tending to his cleanliness with his weakened leg, but he got it done and had limped into the area they had set up benches to dress quickly in case anyone came in. He had gotten as far as the sweat pants he had taken to wearing under his jump suit, and was just lacing up his leg brace again when the voice called in.

His blood went cold. "Ah... H-hello? I'm... I'm j-just finishing!" He called back, hurrying with the laces around his thigh.

Sasha narrowed her eyes when she heard that familiar voice call out.

"Jerry? It's.. ah.. It's Sasha. You um.. you're dressed?"

If he was fresh from the shower, it would be a prime time to shave him, and if she could get that finished quickly, maybe she could have Jerry stand guard while she allowed herself a little longer in the shower.

Excellent idea.

"I umm.. remember, I promised you ah.. I promised that shave? Are you … do you have your kit?"

She hoped he was dressed. Just to err on the side of caution, she waited for his response.

"Ah... I'm... I'm w-woo-wearing pants, if that's what you're worried about, ahahahahaha..." A shave, huh? He scratched at his chin. It was uncomfortable, but his hands were still too shaky to tend to it himself. His scars especially made it tricky. "If... if you're up for it?"

Sasha hesitated.

"......well put a s-sh-sh-sh-shirt on!"

Her cheeks felt hot.

"Woo-working on it!" Jerry called, finishing with his leg brace before scrambling to pull his undershirt on. It just barely covered the mess of scars across his back that made his face look like nothing. "Alright... alright decent!"

Sasha shuffled into the room, hands held up as if ready to cover her eyes if she didn't deem him properly dressed, or at least dressed properly enough for mixed company. It was probably silly to act like this - he was her closest friend, after all, and it wasn't like he'd try anything.

She couldn't help the way she frowned when she caught sight of him in the thin undershirt, but the frown slowly dissipated when Sasha caught sight of the way the scars crept over his shoulder and … how far down his back did they go? They looked horrible, if she was being honest with herself. She couldn't even begin to imagine how painful that must have been.

"Ah.. where. Um. Where should we do it?"

Uhhh, what?

"Shave. Where should. What. Jerry, sit down somewhere, okay?"
PostPosted: Sun May 06, 2012 1:14 pm

Jerry's face went red as he wobbled to sit once more on the bench, "Ah... I s-suppose here is as fine as anywhere? There's w-water just over there... not terribly hot, but..." He shifted to dig through his jumpsuit and coat beside him until he pulled out the little black bag, unzipping it to find what he needed, "I ah... d-don't look that bad do I?" Rin's concern was still echoing in his head.

Sasha gave him a critical glance; usually she would probably just rush to reassure him that no, he looked fine.

"Well. I'm um. I'm not going to.. to lie and s-say you look great, Jerry. You look…" she waved a hand in the hair, "better? But.. I mean, I think you look.. I think your hair looks nice longer. But ah.. you know. The um. Well the hair isn't.. the hair doesn't grow on your cheek there, so you.. you're patchy."

Patchy. Right.

"My papa used to say that his stubble would make him itchy." She lifted her shoulders in a shrug. "I mean.. if you want to pass on a shave? That's.. it's not going to hurt my feelings." Sasha tucked a chunk of hair behind her ear. She felt tired, she was certain she looked tired, and honestly all she wanted was a hot, scalding shower and a nap. In that order.

"You'll probably feel better afterward? I mean. You're clean now, and your pores are open which makes shaving easier. At least, so my papa said."
PostPosted: Sun May 06, 2012 1:26 pm

"My hands are... are still a little sh-shaky. I um. T-tried my guitar again earlier. My ah... coordination is a little um. Still a little off. Er... someone... said something to me earlier... if you're up for it? Um... this ch-cheek is um. T-tricky but they're ah... thick so I don't think it'd hurt me if you ah... slip. Um. If we d-don't do it now, I'll p-probably have a f-full beard by the time we m-move back above ground, ahahahaha..." He smiled weakly, flushing a bit at the comment about his hair.

"Gram always used to make sure it n-never touched my ears." He reached to fidget with the mop on his head as well. Still wet and without the dry fluff, it was sad to see his hairline had been creeping backward on either side of his widow's peak. At least growing it out seemed to cover it up a bit, to his relief.

Stress, he had told himself, at least he wasn't going gray.

"Sometimes change is good," Sasha mumbled, though she didn't sound convinced. She peered into the kit he'd produced, curious about what sorts of tools he had.

"Do you have cream or a brush and soap? A normal razor or a straight razor? I know how to use either. Sometimes my papa would use one, sometimes he would use the other, but he always used brush and frothy soap." She was silent for a moment.

"I.. I don't think I'll ... Jerry, I've done this quite a few times. I really don't.. I don't think I'll cut you. That ah. That side might take longer but. I'll be careful."

She was mildly annoyed with herself, papa this and papa that. He'd probably known of her heritage. He'd known, and he'd never said anything. It was a terrible thought, and one she refused to think about. Not until after they'd talked to the doctor.

The doctor would fix things.

"Ah.. n-nothing so fancy..." He pulled out one of the disposables they were provided, and the generic can of lather as well as his electric razor. The electric was nice in the mornings, and quick before his scarring- the disposable was better at getting in all the tricky corners that still collected hair. He laughed weakly, "I n-never had to shave my grandmother at least."

Sasha's cheeks puffed out slightly as she contemplated how Jerry's comment should make her feel. She finally burst out in loud laughter, shaking her head.

"I guess there's always something to be thankful for, then? Maybe? I .. I mean." She gave him a pained look while she reached for the towel he'd discarded, holding up her finger in a be right back-type gesture. It took her just a few seconds to run the towel in the sink, the hot water almost painful to the touch when she went to ring it out.

Hot-potatoing it between her hands, when she drew closer to Jerry she gave him a short, "It's hot," warning before clapping it on his face.

"To soften your skin," she mumbled, reaching for the shaving cream.

"What's hoMFFGAAH!" He flailed, but remained seated.

It was indeed hot.

Sasha pressed her lips together, holding the disposable razor up for a closer inspection.

It did not pass.

"Jerry, this… this razor is horrible! I mean, we use … I have one of the same things, but… I don't have to shave my face .. with .. it."

Okay, maybe that wasn't the best topic.

Clearing her throat, Sasha tried again.

"The next time um. The next time we get off the island, or ah.. if.. we ever get off the island, you should buy yourself a nice straight razor and a strop. It… it takes practice, and you have to be careful but…" she held the disposable up between forefinger and thumb as if he could see her, "it has to be better than this."

She sounded pretty offended.
