Hel had a brow raised as she stared at the hula hoop in her hand.

She used to be able to do this with no problem. It was a matter of balance and rhythm, two things she was sorely lacking now. The reaper let out an aggravated sigh, blowing some wisps of hair out of her face. Her tunic had grass stains on it, her knees were scuffed up, and her hair was just a mess. Oh, Hel tried hula hooping, and it ended in failure. The ghoul was lucky if she would keep it going for at least one spin!

Rubbing the back of her neck, Hel just kept staring at it, as if she could magically will herself to get her balance and rhythm back once more. No such luck. At least it was quiet here in the Reaper Gardens…no one was seeing her…flubs.

Unfortunately for Hel, Shun had been out for a walk right at that time. Adjusting to having one eye was interesting to say in the least. His peripheral vision wasn't what it used to be, and he had noticed that his depth perception had taken a hit as well. As a result, he was a bit clumsier than usual when moving about quickly. So he was usually trying to be careful and attempted to be as aware of his surroundings as he possibly could.

With his hands in his pockets, he slowly made his way through the gardens, hoping to not bump into anything, when he heard a slightly strange sound. It was like something had fallen to the ground, but he wasn't really sure what that was.

Furrowing his brow, he went to investigate, only to find Hel with a large plastic hoop. He had seen scarelings with similar things before. Hula hoops they were called?

The reaper didn't say anything. No. He just stared at her from behind, trying to figure out what the Jack she was doing. He might have also been standing maybe five feet from her.

The reaper’s head snapped up and her eyes narrowed.

Something wasn’t right.

There was…someone here. Right behind her. The reaper had developed a bit of a paranoia about people being behind her now…her back was still a rather sore and tender spot that she felt she needed to protect at all times. With someone behind her now and not saying a word, the ghoul went on the offensive, clutching the hula hoop tightly in her hand. With no warning, the ghoul spun on her heel, and snapped her arm around, flinging the plastic hoop at the person to catch them off guard only to realize:

A) It was Shun.

B) He was standing five feet away from her.

C) The hula hoop had already left her hand.

Oops.

Had Shun known that Hel was rather antsy about people being behind her, he might not have pulled off that stealth hi. But, he just didn't really see a need to make himself really be known when he was trying to see what she was doing. However, he soon noticed that she was spinning about rather quickly. He went to move to the side to try and avoid her attack, but he didn't quite judge how far he needed to move all too well.

And so he took a hula hoop to the face.

"Arg!" he grunted as his head whipped back from the sudden smack. It hadn't hurt. It just was a bit surprising. Shaking his head, he narrowed his good eye at Hel while clenching his fists a bit. He hadn't quite appreciated that all too much.

"I hadn't realized you changed your weapon," he said lowly.

Oh shi—“ Hel tried to warn but—

WHACK!

The ghoul blinked, still in her throwing pose as the hoop bounced off of Shun and landed a bit away. Another pause and the valkyrie straightened herself out, resting her hands on her hips as she grinned a bit at Shun’s annoyance. Good to see some things didn’t change. “It would be very convenient if I could just de-summon that thing and then re-summon it, certainly.” Hel replied, now moving to go pick it up. As she bent, she couldn’t help but smirk a bit. Okay. Seeing Shun get pegged in the face was kind of…funny. She made sure to smooth out her expression before turned around to face him though, the hoop back in her hand and the other hand back on her hip.

That is what you get for standing behind me silently.” She rolled her shoulder a bit. “What is going on, friend?” It kind of had been a while…and a lot had happened in-between once again.

Once Hel retrieved the object, Shun ran a hand through his hair before letting out a breath. He just sort of shrugged when she said that was what he got for sneaking up on her more or less.

"Moving silently has its merits. I was just out for a walk really. Still adjusting," he frowned lightly before eyeing the hoop, "And exactly what the jack were you doing with that? Or were you planning on throwing it at people in the first place?"

It was completely plausible to him. Add some blades onto something like that and it was a viable weapon really.

A little cumbersome, but with some finesse it could probably work out.

Do merits include getting whacked in the face?” Hel mused.

“…Ah…” She looked down at the hoop and snorted. “No. I was not planning on throwing it at people in the first place…I was doing what you are doing. I am adjusting.” She rolled the hoop back and forth underneath her hand along the stoned path. “It is a scareling’s toy, yes, but to keep hula hoping takes a lot of balance, rhythm and stamina…” Which she didn’t have right now.

It is not working out so well right now.” Not like she needed to hide that fact from Shun.

"No."

Shun said that rather flatly, but that was all he said on the matter. His attention went back to the hoop and he nodded quietly in understanding. They had both lost something. He could only imagine that without the weight of her wings at her back all of the sudden that her balance was not quite the same as what it was before. Not to mention her mobility as she could no longer fly.

"It will take time. For both of us. That and a good amount of training."

Always training. Never not training.

"I hate to admit it but it's been a little slow on my end as well."

Hel groaned, though it shifted into a knowing grin. “Ugh. Time. Time and more training. The ‘more training’ does not bother me…it is the time part. I need to be back to good now.

The reaper looked up as Shun admitted that it was slow for him as well. Well! It was certainly something to hear him say that. She stared at him for a long moment and then reached up to cover one of her own eyes with a hand. Hel’s visible brow furrowed as she looked around with just that eye, and then stared back at Shun, narrowing that eye. One thought she might be trying to do a Shun impression, but she wasn’t. She was trying to put herself in his shoes.

“…Oh dear Jack!” She suddenly cried. “…Battling…battling like this! How are you fairing?”

He knew that feeling. Shun wished to be back in prime condition himself. When Hel covered one of her eyes and looked around, he furrowed his brow, but he didn't say anything. She soon clarified herself within the next moment anyway.

"Decently I suppose. Close range combat is not quite as reliant on depth perception. I know the range of my arms with my blades rather well. The issue is more needing to cover my left side... as well as things that cover a longer range such a when I throw a dagger or shadow step."

Especially the shadowstepping. His aim on that had been notably off he had noticed.

"You too fought recently. How did you fair?"

The reaper nodded her head, lowering her hand back to her hip as Shun spoke. Well, that was good that he could still fight close range…but the other skills were a serious concern. Hel’s brows furrowed as she started to think, though his question momentarily roused her from her thoughts. “…Eh.” Hel rolled her shoulder a bit. She was silent for a moment, her cheeks puffed out. The beauty about talking to Shun? She wasn’t worried about him making fun of her or teasing, because when it came to this part of her nature, he understood her a lot more than any one else did. “…I fought…proficient. On a technical level, just proficient. I hardly have a center of balance now, and that is…it is…frustrating. I feel like…I need to spend another sixteen years learning how to handle my weapon all over again, but I do not have that long.”

Hel huffed. “…During the Isles…Shun…my will is not there anymore, and that is…frightening.” Her shoulders slumped as she looked at the grim. “…There was no drive, no aspiration…I swung my weapon because it was expected of me, not because I wanted to. Does that make sense?”

Shun waited as Hel took the time to explain how she felt about the whole matter. Quite frankly, he was surprised that she no longer lacked a resolve to fight. This was a bit of a concern... especially for the valkyrie. Perhaps the loss of her wings had done more damage than it seemed.

"No will to fight. The resolve is not there," he nodded while closing his eye to think about this. It was not an issue he personally had, but he had a few ideas on the matter.

"Your original will must have been damaged or lost at some point then. What drove you to fight before?"

It wasn’t much, but Hel felt…a bit better seeing Shun’s reaction to her words. She knew he wouldn’t poke fun at her. Even if he wasn’t feeling it, she was confident he understood it on some level. It was times like these Hel was thankful that Shun was always so serious and no-nonsense.

Heh…before…well, you know…the desire to be the best of the best, to show that I could become an accomplished and proud warrior…that I could do it all on my own, with my own hands…” Wow, this was sounding an awful lot like it was self-driven. “…I hate to say it, but it does feel like that will was lost in that Haunted House.” Along with other things. So much for being a good warrior on her own when she was taken out so quick.
PostPosted: Sun May 06, 2012 12:17 pm

That explained it. Maybe not entirely, but it explained a good deal as far as Shun was concerned. He could only imagine that it was hard to strive to be the best there ever was when she had been crippled essentially. He took a few moments to think this over, not answering right away as he stood there in silence to put his thoughts together.

"The greater the goal, the harder the fall. If that was your only drive then it's no wonder it's managed to crack. You need something else along with that. A weak resolve will not get you far in battle," he frowned.

Hel laughed a bit dryly. “…Ya. That had been my own goal, and how fast it crumbled. I built my past sixteen years of existence around it…” She trailed off, rolling the hula hoop back and forth some more. “…Ya. I know it will not. It did not get me far in the Isles, either.”

She paused, and then looked back up at him. “What is your resolve, Shun?”
