It was either a really fortune thing or a really unfortunate thing that the Inn where Kodi Feathergun worked was just a short distance away from the armory where Tristan Feathergun made his apprenticeship. If seen from one point of view, it could have been seen as a good opportunity for the siblings to be close to one another, an easy opportunity for the two of them to grow closer as a family.

Either that, or it provided Tristan with excuses to go and bother his young sister when he was really supposed to be productive.

Fortunately - or maybe unfortunately - for Tristan, on this particular day he was not working, and was traipsing through the town towards the Inn. It was cold, as usual, a thick fur wrapped around his torso and part of his neck, the bandanna around Tristan's hair pulled tightly down over the tops of his ears. He blew out his breath in a gust - the distilled air was visible in front of him - and rubbed his hands together eagerly.

I wonder if Kodi has a break anytime soon, he thought to himself, as he crossed the street, moving towards the building.

Unfortunately - or maybe fortunately - Tristan was very slightly distracted and stopped on the front landing of the Inn, half engrossed in a book he had discovered tucked into the pocket of his coat.

Perhaps the Gods were favoring one, Tristan Feathergun today. That or they were secretly laughing at another Feathergun, happening to time a small break in her shift at just the most opportune moment. Like, for instance, when Kodi was heading towards the kitchens to take her break. Because it was warmer in there, thanks to the ovens, and she could usually get a small snack from the chef's to munch on before she had to go back out and do her job.

Which was exactly what she was doing when one of the other waiters informed her, as he brushed by, that Tristan and just walked in. And had his nose shoved in a book. Like usual.

Kodi sighed. Isn't he supposed to be working? Of course he was. But this was Tristan! If anything, she assumed her older brother was having a slow day and thus could slip away for a few.

And of course he came to visit her.

Her lips twitched as she grabbed a small chunk of cheese from the lead chef and slipped back out into the main portion of the restaurant. Weaving carefully through the tables - and other wait-staff - looking for her brother. Frowning, she didn't see him up front right away. Though upon further inspection she found him on the front landing. With said book in hand. The willowy girl sighed, wishing she had a warm shawl to through over her shoulders.

"Tris, you do know it's warmer on the inside, right? Especially towards the back. Where you aren't technically supposed to be but they let you anyways." The shorter sibling smiled as she moved towards him and tapped the book in his hand.

"What was it this time?" Kodi asked, eying the 'distraction'.

This was not the first time he had been found with his long, narrow nose in a book - nor was it even the first time that he had been found only halfway into the Inn. The groundskeeper, standing several feet away as he clipped the hedges of a nearby fir tree, gave the young blonde man a slightly exasperated look.

Tristan, of course, was completely and utterly oblivious. And did not notice that his sister had, in fact, noticed his arrival and was now standing over him, peering at him from behind.

"Tris, you do know it's warmer on the inside, right?"

For several long moments, there was no response.

Awkward silence.

But then -

"Ah!" said Tristan brightly, peering up at his little sister with a bright, cheerful grin as though he had not just been utterly ignoring her for almost a full five minutes while he finished the last page of the book. In fact, Tristan's brain had not even registered the greeting until after the fact, and now he just looked at her with a pleased expression.

"Good afternoon, Kodi," he said, and stepped into the inn, brushing snow from his shoulders. "I figured I'd come and visit you! How are you?"

He had totally forgotten about the book question already.

She crossed her arms tightly against her chest, trying to keep her warmth she'd gained from inside the Inn. There was a clearly exasperated look on her face, equal to that of the groundskeeper. Kodi sent him a long look, causing the man's lips to twitch and almost smile. Except he rarely (aka: never) smiled.

Really, she should just go back inside, maybe eat that small snack, and come back out.

Tristan would probably still be standing there. Oblivious. Like usual.

Kodi sighed. And waited. Annnnnd waited-

The girl just shook her head, running a hand across her face as she followed her brother inside. "Did you now? Are you sure you didn't want to just come and read and use me as the excuse to get away with it?" She teased, stomping each boot in turn on the mat provided, so she could dislodge the snow there. "C'mon, Tris. We can sit in the kitchen. Where it's warmer." Kodi gave her brother a light shove in that direction.

"How are things at the armory?" She asked, glancing up at him.

Clearly Tristan needed to pay better attention.

Clearly Tristan did not know how to pay better attention in the slightest.

Which also meant that he was completely oblivious to both the groundskeeper's expression and Kodi's, and was instead just grinning brightly at his little sister as though he didn't have a care in the world.

"I wouldn't do that," he said, and gave her the puppy dog eyed look, pouting. Reaching out, he ruffled her hair affectionately and stepped inside, brushing snow from the top of his head and his shoulders. Inside of the Inn it was much warmer, the inside brightly lit with glowing lanterns that lined the whole front area. Obediently Tristan followed Kodi down the hall towards the kitchen, the smells of lunch beginning to fill his nose.

"Things are great," he said cheerfully, looking around for a snack. "I'm learning how to properly flatten metal now. How's the Inn?"

Kodi just grinned at her brother, batting at his hand when he ruffled her hair. She was, obviously, quite used to his absent minded behavior. Or in simpler terms, Kodi had grown used to Tristan's easily distractable state. Especially when a book was involved. But she loved him all the same.

"Of course not." She said dryly, tugging at a stray stand of his hair.

Once in the kitchen, Kodi pointed over towards a plate set off to the side by one of the chef's. "You can grab a few things off there." She added in, noticing her brother's wandering gaze. The chef - who happened to be Kodi's favorite - snickered when he spotted Tristan, winking at Kodi as he added a little more to the plate.

Kodi moved and sat down on a bench, sighing at having the small break from being on her feet for several hours. "Really? That's great! Maybe you'll get to start making some of the weapons soon." She smiled, running her hands along her skirts. They needed to be mended in a few spots, but were alright for now.

"Busy as usual. Had a few men come in, bragging about how 'deep' they ventured towards the Woods." Her gaze was conflicted. She wanted to believe that the men actually had braved the brave. But at the same time, they'd seemed too...perky. Or something. "They even claimed to have seen something." Kodi lowered her voice as she glanced at Tristan.

"Don't give me that look," said Tristan, with a slightly pouting expression on his face as he took a seat at the counter in the Inn, pulling a basket of rolls towards him. He stuffed one in his mouth, grinning, and then reached for the plate. "Thanks, Bill."

Chewing absently on the roll, a pastry in his hand, Tristan now turned his green-eyed glance at Kodi. He crossed one leg over the other and pushed his hair away from his face, leaning forward to rest his arms on the counter.

"I don't know about that," he said, after swallowing a huge mouthful. "I'm not exactly making a whole lot of progress here. Hopefully I'll get to the better stuff soon, though. I want to be able to provide for myself, after all."

Giving her a wink, Tristan took another bite of his roll, giving a small snort as he shook his head. "People are always trying to outdo one another," he said, but there was a slightly excited gaze in his eyes, and he leaned closer to Kodi, smiling widely.

"What do you think they could have seen, hm?"

She only barely refrained from rolling her eyes at him, though her lips quirked up. Kodi just leaned over and patted his cheek in a teasing manner. Like him, she reached over and took a roll to nibble on. Though unlike Tristan, she didn't pop the whole thing in her mouth. Kodi just ripped off small chunks at a time.

Kodi snorted and gave her brother an amused look. "Too busy getting distracted by other things, are you?" She grinned, and made a silent prayer that he was able to get better at it. "I'm sure you're doing better than you think, Tris. Just give it a little more time." She reached over and gave his arm a squeeze, smiling at the wink.

A frown formed on her face as she lifted an arm to rest her elbow on the counter, placing her chin within her palm. "This is true..." She admitted, though some of the stories she heard were difficult not to fall prey to believing just for the amount of 'detail' described. But then, she was a sucker for believing most of what she heard. "They just had so much passion when talking about it." She paused. "Albeit, the arrogant kind."

Her brother's smile combined with that look in his eyes had her lips curling into an excited smile of her own. "I'm...not sure. But they said it was big. And the eyes glowed fiercely." Kodi shivered, lowering her voice. "What if...do you think it was one of Them, Tris?" The Touched. They terrified her.
