Quote:
Text to Malodore: Hello! This is Lizzy... It's been a while since we've spoken, and I'm not sure if you remember me, but I'll be coming down to visit you tomorrow afternoon. I hope to see you soon!

That was the text she had sent out last night; it had nearly been a whole week since the students' return to Amityville. While it seemed like a reasonable amount of time to give to allow people to... Settle back into school and possibly calm themselves down, she had a feeling that it wasn't enough for Malodore... After all, she had seen the state that Jericho was in, much less Malodore, who was probably there when Riley was...

Her chest tightened at the thought, and she found herself feeling rather scared of meeting Malodore, even though she was already in front of the plague doctor's room - or rather, his new room, according to the note stuck to the door of his old room. With Jericho, she felt that she was in the position to hold and comfort him because they were good friends, but with Malodore... Well, with him, she was at a loss.

She wasn't even sure how to start a conversation with him right now, much less bring up the topic she had in mind... With a sigh, she inhaled deeply, put on her best determined face, and knocked on his door.

It had indeed received her text, and spent some time in silence before recovering. It remembered her, of course. She had done much for the students, and while it hadn't seen her personally any time lately... doubtless she had heard what had happened.

Pretty much everyone had.

It was ready for her that morning, and the door opened a few seconds after her knock, revealing the plague doctor standing as poised as it could manage, though there was a vague, awkward unease around it. "Elizabeth - Lizzy. It is good to see you," it said, nodding to her. "Come in?"

The room was clearly spartan, temporary, but with some strange details. For one thing, one wall was nearly covered with notes and sketches, largely dealing with the study of Insanity. For another, the cot Malodore was using as a bed was nearly drowned in a mass of bedding that seemed thoroughly unsuited to the bed itself. And there were two cwn annwns in the room, not one - Luce, the older one, wagged her tail at Lizzy more sedately, while the younger pup tumbled at one of Lizzy's feet.

"How can I assist you?" the plague doctor asked, sitting down on the edge of what looked like a stone sarcophagus, gesturing the demoness towards the simple folding chair set up against the wall of notes. "I am afraid this room is not terribly suited for visiting, but I am glad to have you nevertheless."

"Hello," She returned the greeting before walking into the room, taking a quick look around before shaking her head, "Ah, no! Uh, thank you for seeing me at such short notice..."

She smiled, albeit awkwardly as well; she had never been alone with him before. There was always someone else around, someone she was more familiar with to act as a buffer. This time, she had two puppies around and... Well, better than nothing. In fact, she made it a point to pet them both on the head, and somehow, she felt a little calmer after. As she made her way over to the seat offered, she glanced briefly at the notes on the wall before casting a worried look at Malodore; had he been here... Doing this since he returned?

"I'm... Sorry about what happened to Riley," Her voice was soft, and it trembled towards the end, "I heard about... The insanity that had infected her. Jericho told me about it... He showed me the signs on his body, about how it's spreading. I want to help. Whatever you're researching, whatever you need in your research, whatever I can help with... I will, so please don't hesitate to ask."

That was the first order of business done. Now for the second part, which was also the part she was not looking forward to bringing up...

"The other thing I wanted to talk to you about is regarding a funeral... A memorial of sorts, but because of the Bogeymen, we can't do anything too direct," She frowned, "We can't risk... Angering them. That's what Mister Arel said."

Malodore's stomach clenched unpleasantly at the mention of Riley; a faint shudder ran through the plague doctor's thin frame, but it kept its head up, gaze on Lizzy. "Si... it is my intention to find a treatment of some kind. A cure, if possible. I will not lose any other student to this affliction." Its hands balled into fists for a moment before relaxing.

And then it tensed again, its feathers chiming sharply against each other with the movement. Funeral. A memorial. Of course, it made sense. It gritted its beak. "The Bogeymen," it rasped, its composure just barely holding together. "Angering them. Why should they be angry? What business is it of theirs, our grief? Our mourning?" Had it already begun? Were they slandering her as they had Professor Red?

"I want to help. Please, if there's anything I can do..." She offered before tensing at his reaction; it was clear that Malodore did not like the Bogeymen, but she could understand why... After all, they took Riley away from them. Away from him. It would not be alright - she wanted so much to say it, but she knew that it would be irresponsible. Like making a promise she was not confident of making.

Thus she went on to talk about the things she knew.

"It's none of their business... But no doubt they'll be watching us. Waiting for us to say or do something wrong, using that as an opportunity to shut us down like they had tried to do so before," She sounded apologetic, and her voice was shaking; she felt so bad that she had to tell Malodore this. Riley was student council president, a good friend, and role model to many; she deserved more. Deserved better... But Arel's warning weighed heavily in her heart; she couldn't endanger anyone by "angering" them, "They're they official law-enforcers of Halloween. They have their own code. Even Town Hall does not control their operations. I was warned, Malodore. I want to hold a memorial but I want it to be low risk, even if... Even if I don't feel good about it..."

She sighed, her face crumpled up, "Do... Do you know what sort of a memorial she would like? You... You know her best, besides Jericho."

It shifted, resettling its wings; their new size was still unfamiliar to it, and one metal spar rasped against a wall. "I... grazie, I understand..." It shook its head. It wasn't happy, but it understood. If someone had given them a warning, it had to respect that. "You are correct, even if it angers me to think. They took her away, why should they care-" It bit off the end of the word, shoulders heaving for a moment before it stilled again.

"I would like help. I must remember that I cannot do everything alone." It opened its beak just a little in a wry smile. "Thank you. I... she liked... she liked so many things. But in the end, the last... the last memory. I know she remembered it in the end. I heard the chimes of the pavilions in Conquest's Isle. There was a walk there, sacred to lovers, and I took her there..." It paused again, closing its eyes for a moment before continuing. "There were chimes, and flowers, and beautiful things. We talked about... cake, of all things, I..."

A tear escaped, but it did not stop. "Cake. The most magnificent cake. And chimes. And flowers. And lights, a thousand tiny ones. Inextinguishable, if possible. I must keep her memory alive. I cannot carry it alone."

"The person who gave me the warning was mister Arel," She continued, her frown deepening as she wring her hands, "He seemed nervous about something, like he was afraid of being caught trying to tell me things... He said that we weren't ready. I'm not sure how deep the rabbit hole goes, but I think we've barely crawled in." However, this seemed like a one-way tunnel.

"Chimes and flowers and cake and lights... That sounds like a lovely last memory," For some reason, hearing those things come from Malodore made her tear up, and she quickly dabbed at her eyes, stopping the tears from falling. She closed her eyes, trying to recreate the scene in her mind, even though she had no idea how the Isle of Conquest looked like, "A candlelit picnic by a lake in the evening, when it is dark... And for everyone, a lotus flower lantern, to be lit up and released onto the lake. Every flame will be a memory of someone who had been touched by Riley, directly or indirectly... Wind chines will be given to everyone to take back. As a reminder." A brief pause followed as she opened her eyes, looking a little calmer now than before, "Should it be a private event?"

Tears were streaming freely down Malodore's mask now, and it made no attempt to hide them - instead, it just nodded, talking through the tears. "Si... that sounds lovely, I... thank you," it hiccuped. "I do not know where to get such items, and my skills are limited to the medical, but..."

It tilted its head slightly to one side as she mentioned making the event private. "I... I don't want to hide what happened. Riley w-was the student council president, after all - her absence will be noted by many. I will speak freely about the truth whenever I am asked. And I would... I would like to make it known to the rest of the student population that I am available to assist those who are suffering from Insanity as well... they should not feel that they are alone, and not understood. I would not want to exclude anyone who has a reason to be there, even though I may not know them."

"No... Don't worry about it," She stood up and hesitantly reached out for Malodore, giving him a pat on his shoulder in an effort to comfort, "I'll take care of all that... Seeds will help." It was a promise, one she intended to keep.

"No hiding," She nodded in agreement, although it was clear that she was worried as well, judging from the way she was frowning, "Besides, there were other... Eye-witnesses, so they know that you are speaking the truth. Speak freely, but don't speak against the Bogeymen in public..." That probably would not end well, "The students who came home from the island complained of hearing voices, and nightmares... I can't imagine living alone with something like that. It is always good to know that there are people you can trust. Reaching out is a good idea... But you need to convince them to take your hand too."

"Thank you," Malodore repeated, lifting one sleeve; it produced a handkerchief and dabbed gingerly at its mask. "I... I will be careful. From what I have observed, the Insanity causes an increase in paranoia, especially when one fears being taken away from home. It may be challenging to break through that paranoia. I must be gentle, and impeccable with my words and my deeds..."

It shook its head. "And I will watch my words against the Bogeymen. I cannot help others if I am myself compromised, but..." It shuddered again. "I want her back, Lizzy. Even if she is lifeless, I want her back. The thought of her in their foul hands disgusts me."

"I want her back too... When everyone returned, Jericho, Mot, and myself were waiting at the edge of the forest. We saw her being taken away from the group. Jericho tried to stop them, but..." She trailed off, lowering her head; they were stopped from going any closer, and then Jericho collapsed, "I was so afraid that they would see Jericho's infection and take him away too... I... I don't know... Would they do that? Take them away for 'observation' or 'quarantine'?"

Take them away from Amityville?

"I was told that even among Bogeymen, there are 'good' and 'bad' ones," She recalled Arel's words, "There... There was a Bogeyman at Professor Red's retirement-" She frowned, resisting the urge to make a face, "-who was apparently a friend of Red's. He seemed genuine about helping us... Or at least being honest with us. His name... S-Sa... Saebel? I'm still wary, but... He's our best shot."

"They might," Malodore said, voice low, edged with controlled anger. "I will not allow that to happen. I have spoken with Nurse Cricket - she will aid us in this matter, and not go to the Bogeymen. If you recall, she was wounded by their actions against Professor Red. I trust her. We must be circumspect and seek out those suffering from Insanity while not revealing their existence to outsiders..."

It hadn't paid much attention to Professor Red's 'retirement' at the time, having not gone to the Haunted House with the others. "Perhaps... perhaps I might speak to him, if he might be useful," it said, warily. "But, I am reminded. Professor Red was suffering from Insanity, yes? Or something like it? Could you... could you tell me what you remember? I was not there, but the data..."

"Yes... They were friends, after all," She nodded; even Arel had showed up for the students' gathering and memorial for Red, even though he didn't dare to say much in front of the Bogeymen. The staff knows something they can't reveal, she was sure of it, "Yes... She was... Professor Red had somehow bonded with a hunter weapon, and was working undercover."

She frowned, trying to recall the exact details of that fight, "However, something went wrong during her fight with Caelius. I'm not sure if it's because the weapon was damaged by his scythe, or if Professor Red's fate was sealed the moment she bonded with a hunter weapon, but... We are made of Fear... And hunter weapons drain our fear-" She was sure that Malodore would remember their experiences on the island, during the field trip from so long ago, "-It absorbed Professor Red and... She became part of the weapon. She was... Screaming as it took her. She thought it wouldn't happen - I think she had some sort of agreement with her weapon - but it did. When she was fully absorbed, Caelius kicked the weapon - which was damaged - down the ledge we were on."

Her frown deepened, "It... Took a while, I think, but something must had happened then... Because Professor Red climbed out of that ditch as a grey monster, many times larger than Jericho in his dragon form. She... She spoke of home at first, attacking both students and hunters. After a while, it was clear that there were two voices - one belonging to Professor Red, the other I assume belonging to the weapon. She must have remembered who she was later in the fight - she addressed us, told us that 'Halloween cannot die', but she also told us that it was too late for her. She was dying... And... She turned to stone... Caelius... He destroyed her body with his scythe. Only the head was left, but it was too big for us to move, so some of us took pieces... I buried mine in that box, or I would show you, but someone should have it on them still... A piece of Professor Red."

As Lizzy spoke, Malodore produced a notepad and pen from its sleeve and started taking notes, watching her avidly as its pen flew across the paper. "The weapons... yes. I am not sure how accurate to the genuine experience the Trial of Death was, but I remember... perhaps I can draw some conclusions..." It didn't seem to talking to her, not entirely.

When she was done, the plague doctor went on writing for a good minute before finally closing the notepad with a sigh. "Grazie - I should have investigated this sooner, but I think with this information... perhaps I can begin building more detailed hypotheses..." Its shoulders hunched then, as if its note-taking had permitted it to only think about Lizzy's story in the most clinical terms... and now the emotional implications were coming back to haunt it. "Stone. I should have realized, I... but without the weapon as a variable, there was no way to predict such an outcome..." It shook its head sharply. "After you returned, were there after-effects, mentally speaking? I know many who were in the Four Isles have suffered at least temporary psychological disruptions."

It was trying very hard not to think about the Bogeymen smashing Riley's body to pieces. Trying, and largely failing.

"Trial of Death... My group probably took a different path," She frowned, "We... Found Mister Arel and his hideout. He was convinced that we couldn't be real students - that we must be fakes - because all the students were... Dead. The hideout was later attacked, and some of us managed to escape... However, we felt so lost. So helpless. The fog... It enveloped us, and took us home."

She shook her head after a brief pause, "No... No after-effects that I remember..." The only mental effects were emotional ones, caused by witnessing the death of a professor... There wasn't anything else. She paused, looking thoughtful, brows knitted together in a frown, "We were surrounded by that... Fog that was made up of dead Halloween creatures on the island, and it made us hear and see things... But once we were out of the island, the effects of that 'fog' stopped - so why does it linger now? With Professor Red's incident, and the Insanity-infected Joy creatures, we weren't affected either... When did Riley and Jericho start showing signs of being affected...? Many Octobers ago, during the 'gender swap' incident, I met up with Jericho, and he was acting... Off. I thought nothing of it then, but..." Her frown deepened, and she mentally scolded herself for not showing more concern earlier; if she had, maybe he wouldn't be suffering as much now, feeling 'alone' without Riley there.
